STRAWBERRIES & CIGARETTES [CHAPTER 21]

21| "Staying alone is better than getting attached to someone and then leaving them or they leave you."

"Ayy, shadow what you're doing?" Jungkook questions jogging beside the mysterious girl. "Walking." She replies, pulling her hood on her head. Jungkook clicks his tongue, feeling done with her replies. "I can see that." She turns toward him. "So why ask if you can see?"

"I meant where you're going?"

"Nowhere." She replies, shoving her hands in her pockets. "Huh? I think you're going for a walk because you're in a tracksuit." She nods, keeping her head straight. "Can I come?" He questions, hoping she would say yes.

Shadow sighs as she fastens her pace, not replying to him.ย  Jungkook smiles catching up with her. "She didn't deny it! Yes!"

"What are you doing here?" She questions, kicking the pebbles with her feet. "I saw you so I thought to tag along." She stops, staring at him weirdly. "Don't you have anything to do instead of stalking me?" Jungkook raises his hand on his side in defense. "I'm not stalking you. I was sitting by my window and saw you lonely so I tagged along."

"I'm not lonely. I choose to stay alone."

"No one likes to stay alone."

"I do and I like to. Staying alone is better than getting attached to someone and then leaving them or they leave you."

Jungkook raised his shoulders in a half-shrug. "Well, that's how life works. People come and people go." She inhaled a deep breath, staring at the sky.

"It's easy to say. When you lose someone you loved dearly, you lose a part of yourself. Your life starts to feel weird and it feels like something is missingโ€”something important you need to live your life. Life becomes dry and meaningless when they aren't there anymore. Losing someone is really hard. I don't know how people cope with that."

Jungkook stares at her in silence. The more he stared, the more he got curious about her. It was like her existence was itself a mysteryโ€”from her clothes to her talks, everything screamed mysterious.

"You talk like you experienced it." She chuckled quietly, choosing to stay silentโ€”once more keeping him in dark. Jungkook looks straight, this time not pushing her. He has learned one thing. If she wants to tell, she will tell by herself and if she doesn't she will not even if he will push her to the edge.

She pursed her lips, taking the pink candy outside from her pocket. A fist comes into Jungkook's view, making the poor boy flinch. He looks at her with wide eyes and heavy breathing. She raised her brows, rolling her eyes. "I wasn't gonna beat you, stupid."

Jungkook licked his lips in embarrassment, ruffling his hair. "I thought I did something wrong." He speaks in a timid voice making the woman chuckle. "Cuteโ€”wtf?" She mentally slaps herself, shaking her head. "I was just giving you candy." She says, grabbing his hand and putting it on his palm.

Jungkook's eyes twinkled with excitement, just like a child's. He immediately unwrapped the candy and ate it. The humming sound coming from Jungkook was enough to tell the girl that he liked it. "I love it!" He beams, jumping on her side like a child.

She shakes her head, a small smile displaying on her lips that Jungkook was unaware of. "You want more?" Jungkook nods immediately, a grin stretching his mouth.

She gives him a handful of candies not caring about the amount. "Woah! You're generous." Her shoulders raise in a shrug as she looks at the happy boy. "You're such a kid." The happiness replaces with anger as her word sinks into his brain. "I'm not a kid!" He huffs, puffing his cheeks with air.

She scoffs, rolling her eyes. "Yeah yeah, whatever you say." She stares at the new cafe, pondering whether to go inside or not. She opens the door of the cafe and enters inside, leaving the whiny boy alone. He follows her inside while shouting "I'm not a kid."

Jungkook and Shadow sit on opposite sides. Jungkook stares outside of the window, his hands folded near his chest, his cheeks puffed. Shadow rolls her eyes looking at him sulking over such a small thing. "Weirdo." She mumbles, continuing to stare at the menu.

"What you wanna eat?" She asks, staring at him being a whiny kid. He doesn't reply making her annoyed with his behavior. She calls the waiter, not dealing with his silliness. "One Ice Americano with an avocado sandwich and one frappuccino with vanilla cake." She orders in a deep, low voice making the waiter gulp.

The waiter writes the order down quickly and goes to another customer. "Now sulk because I ordered nothing for you." She claims, sneering at him. Jungkook frowns deepens as his lips push in a pout. He was hungry and didn't have breakfast because of her but still, he didn't move from his place, staying still as if he was a statue.

She stares outside the window, waiting for her order. The jazz music playing in the background was calm and cozy for people but it was giving her anxiety. The rush at this time of the day was giving her a headache. She wished for a peaceful life with no drama in it but her life was itself a drama.

Her gaze fell upon a lovely daughter and father talking with each other. "Such a lovely sigh to see." She thought, a sad smile tugging on her lips. The daughter cup his father's cheek and kiss on his forehead. The man laughs wholeheartedly kissing his daughter back with so much love. They were radiating happy family vibes which she craved to have.

"Don't ever kiss me with your ugly mouth! Fuck off!" He raises his hand in the air, making the little girl flinch. She runs to the corner. Afraid of her dad she tries to hide but he grabs her leg and drags her towards him. She starts to cry while hiccuping, trying to dodge the attacks but he slaps her in the face.

"You will never kiss me with this dirty mouth of yours, YOU UNDERSTAND!" She flinches at the sudden loud voice, nodding continually. He smiles, patting her head. "Go to your room. I don't want to see your face." Crying she runs to her room and locks it.

"Your foodโ€”" Shadow's eyes widen when she saw Yoongi standing in front of her. "What are you doing here?" She questions him, her eyebrows drawn together in confusion. "....Iโ€“I." He gulps, his hand visually shaking in panic. "I am theโ€”the ownerโ€”" she stands up, slamming her hands on the table. Jungkook gets startled by the sudden noise, waking up from the nap, obliviously looking here and there.

She grits her teeth, glaring at him but doesn't say anything and picks their things up. She tugged at Jungkook's arm and drags him out of the place. Yoongi stares at his sister's disappearing figure with a sad smile, clutching the tray in his hands, his knuckles turning paler.

He gulps, trying to control the tears that were about to flow like rivers. His mind repeated her words again and again "you're pathetic" and "you're vulnerable" which made his tears come out unknowingly. He flinched when he felt his cheeks wet.

Yoongi licked his trembling lips and turned around to leave the place but stopped when he recalled that he was the owner. "I'm not like you.....I'm such a disappointment." With that said he goes back to the work, smiling at his workers. Showing his strong side while inside he was nothing but a fragile glass that could turn into millions of shards just by her sister's words.

The gap and italic mean it's a flashback if you're confused. I should have written a flashback there.

Okay, I posted this because I thought I should make up for the long hiatus. And I was also free so...

Well, I do agree with Shadow. Staying alone is better than people leaving you.
