Lily Evans and James Potter say I love you

"They're adorable" James said smiling tiredly as he watched the first years scramble onto the train home for Christmas, being herded by Hagrid and Professor McGonagall.

"I remember my first year, I never wanted to leave!" Lily chuckled, leaning on her boyfriend's arm. He wrapped a comforting arm around her. 

"I remember" he smiled.

"Liar." she accused.

James laughed. "No I actually do remember! You'd stayed for a whole week after Alice left before you got lonely and begged Dumbledore to let you go."

Lily scowled. "Stupid memory kid" she muttered under her breath.

James grinned, rubbing his eyes softly. "You look tired" Lily told him, softly examining his face.

"I am. Full moon last night."

Lily nodded slowly. "Let's head up yeah?"

As they walked up the stairs toward the Head's Dorm with James leaning on Lily so that he didn't fall over. Lily hadn't realised how tired he was until now, because she was practically dragging him around.

She pushed open the door to their dorm and helped him in, leading him to his bedroom. He stumbled onto his bed and smiled up at her. "I love you" he said.

"Yes sweetheart, I love you too, now go to sleep." Lily told him, bending down to kiss him. As she was on her way out, she froze looking back at his sleeping figure.

It wasn't the first time he'd told her he loved her. He'd said it countless times, insisting that he'd wait for her to feel the same way. She'd tried to tell him he didn't have to but he had made it clear she had to mean it.

As she got ready for bed, she though about the way he smiled his lopsided grin that made her go weak in the knees. She thought about the way he always made sure that she was okay no matter what was happening.

She thought about the way he knew how to be silly, and sweet, and charming and responsible and funny all at once. She thought about the way he never failed to coax a laugh out of her, even on her worst days.

She thought about how his eyes sparkled when he was happy, and how his eyelashes splayed across his cheeks when he slept. She thought about how he went out of his way to make sure first years weren't lost.

She thought about how he made sacrifices for those he loved with no second thoughts to the matter. She thought about how he risked Azkaban for his friend. She thought about how he was loyal to the core.

She thought about him being goofy, and him being silly. She thought about him dancing with her in the dorm and him transfiguring his hair to entertain her. She thought about his pranks and his jokes and his grins.

She thought about him being kind, and responsible. She thought about how he made sure the younger kids were safe and settled, and kept up to his head boy duties and how his grades were high no matter what.

She thought about him being bloody gorgeous, about how his hair fell on his face, or how when she hugged him she could hear his heart beating through his muscular body. She thought about his grins and how his face would light up when he smiled.

She thought about how he never forgot anything about her, whether it was her birthday or something she said four years ago. She thought about how he loved her unconditionally, no matter how she behaved.

She smiled as she realised, she did love him. A lot.

"I love James Potter" she whispered to herself, laughing deliriously at how her younger self would have reacted. But it didn't matter now what she or anyone else would have said. You want to know why?

Well, It was because Lily Evans loved James Potter, and he loved her back.

When James woke up, it took him a moment to place the reason of his delirious happiness. As he sat up, her words were branded into his mind.

"Yes sweetheart, I love you too,"

He fell back on his pillows, feeling ecstatic.
