โ TW: death, voldemort's face โ
James and harry were in the living room making the puffs of colored smoke Harry adored. Their laughter was a blissful waterfall cascading down into my ears.
The telltale pop! of someone apparating penetrated the air. James shot me an uneasy look from where I was preparing Harry's bottle in the kitchen. My eyes widened.
"It's probably some random wizard. This used to be an all wizard town before the Muggles moved in after all." James says, trying to comfort me. I had been on edge ever since Dumbledore told us we were in danger.
I walked over to them. "Bedtime Harry, lets go," I said. James scooped up Harry and handed him to me as he stretched out on the sofa, yawning.
I could have sworn I heard the gate. I don't miss the way fear scuttled into James's eyes. But he doesn't move.
"It's probably a Halloween surprise," He says, adjusting the antlers on his head. "Sirius, Remus, or Peter, you know?"ย
I nod, trying to put it out of my mind. Harry babbles, coaxing a smile out of the both of us. He's a beacon of light in an otherwise bleak world. As i try to feed him his milk, I manage a laugh. He distracts me, but not James.
James. James who could have been a seeker, James who always spotted Waldo instantly in the Where's Waldo books mum used to send over for Harry, James who usually spotted snitches before the seekers in matches, sees it before I do.
His face falls, fear, anger, determination all in one. "That fucking rat" he mutters.
"What's wrong?" I ask. He looks at me, his gaze reach out across the living room and into the kitchen.
"Lily, it's him." He says. I barely hear him.
He'd seen that nasty egg-like head in the window before I had. Instant hatred for Peter Pettigrew slides into my blood.
James stands up.ย "Lily, take Harry and go!" he shouts, snapping me out of the shock. "It's him! Go! Run! I'll hold him off!"
I try to protest, but he's hearing none of it. He's put on his brave face. He won't let us die today.
He's halfway across the room, when he turns around and I see a slip of vulnerability in his hazel eyes. "I love you."
"Love you more." I return, picking Harry up. I don't have the strength to leave, not yet.
The lock outside clicks. He looks at me one more time.
Then he's running toward the door, and I'm running toward the stairs, hoping there's a way out. hoping I can save Harry, because now he's going to go and kill that egg.
I only realize all to late that James's wand is still on the couch. Dread settles in my stomach, stronger than ever. He may have stood a chance with it, but without it.... he's going to die.
I choke back a sob, as Harry curiously stares at me. "What's wrong mummy? Where did dada go? why are we running?"
Somehow I manage a smile, plaster it on my face just for Harry. "We're going upstairs, love." is all I manage to say.
I'm in the nursery, placing Harry in his crib as i try to find a way to save him, a way to be safe.ย
And then green light reaches out from downstairs and I hear the thud of a body hitting the floor.
The vial of whatever i was clutching drops to the ground, shattering in an explosion of a thousand tiny shards. A heart wrenching scream escapes my lips.
And then there's footsteps, footsteps climbing the stairs and there's nothing I can do but wait.
I feel hopeless. I try to stack up boxes on the door, anything to save Harry. Its useless. Voldemort them aside like nothing.
I stand before the crib, my arms wide, trying to save Harry. Shielding him from the sight.
I see no way out of this. Lily Evans Potter does not beg. Lily Evans Potter isn't a mewling rat.
"Not Harry, not Harry, please not Harry!" I gasp out.
Voldemort regards me with a sick detachment. "Stand aside, you silly girl... stand aside, now." He says in his clod, high voice.
"Not Harry, please no, take me, kill me instead-"ย
I sound pathetic.
"This is my last warning-" Voldemort maintains. I'm not sure why he's even bothering.
"Not Harry! Please... have mercy... have mercy... Not Harry! Not Harry! Please! I'll do anything..."
"Stand aside. Stand aside, girl!"
I don't move, firmly planting myself between Harry and the egg faced monster.
Lily Evans Potter never begged in her life, just in her death.
I'm sorry Sirius I never did get to go to a muggle mall with you. I'm sorry Remus, I never took you and Harry to a library. I'm sorry Frank and Alice, I'm glad it wasn't you. I'm sorry Dorcas, Mary, Emmeline, we never had a girls night after Marlene died. I'm sorry mum, dad, i could have been a better daughter. I'm sorry Petunia, I could have been a better sister.
I'm sorry Harry, I will never be able to be there for you.
The last thing I saw before i fell was a flash green, beautiful, like Harry's eyes.
don't hate me. ana
