James Potter had a friend before The Marauders

Throughout the course of his lifetime, James Potter has had many friends. Whether they were the good kind, or the bad, was up to time and fate to decide. But, before he met Sirius, before he met Peter, before he met Remus, before he met Lily, Marlene, Dorcas, Alice, Frank. Emmeline, Mary, Carlos, Bella, Kingsley, Hestia and all the others, James met a single peculiar boy.

Our story starts when a nine year old boy told his mother that he wanted a friend. You must think, it is odd for a boy that age to not have any friends, but the case of the Potters was a special one.

"Mum, i want to make a friend." James said, leaning on the banister of the stairs that led to the library where sat his mother.

"You have friends, dear, you have me, your father, all the elves" said Euphemia Potter, not breaking the flow of her knitting.

Growing up in a rich family seems like the dream to most of us, but it comes with its problems. Despite doing nothing but invent a hair potion, Fleamont Potter had made a lot of purist enemies just because of his beliefs, just because he didn't believe in the casual slaughter of muggleborns.

"But, Mum!" James complained, stretching the word out. "I want a real friend!"

Euphemia looked up at her son, her own hazel eyes staring back at her pleading. "Alright, James, tell you what. We're going to convention today, and we'd be willing to leave you in the town we'll be in, only if you promise to never let Dinky out of sight."

James beamed. "I promise mum!"

And then it was decided. Because Fleamont and Euphemia Potter were attending a conference, James Potter would be allowed to talk to some of the muggles in Cokeworth. He couldn't stop smiling.

Once they reached, Dinky the House Elf had to physically restrain James from running away. Lucky for her, he was a rather scrawny boy, and she was good at heavy lifting. Quietly, making sure not to attract the eyes of muggles, they walked around the town.

James' eyes suddenly caught those of a pretty red head who looked about his age. She had the most beautiful green eyes he'd ever seen. She blushed under his gaze, and bounded up to him, Dinky chose to watch from behind a tree.

"Lily Evans" she smiled.

"James" he whispered shyly.

Lily smiled, and just as he was about to ask her something a slightly older looking blonde was dragging her by the arm. "Lily, we have to get home before mum and dad realize we're gone!"

Lily scowled. "But, Tuney," she began, her voice oddly calm for someone her age. "Mum and Dad said we could go to the park."

"Yes, well, Gregory Adams is around here, and he can't see me swinging like that" The blonde primly smoothed out her curls.

"Now that you're eleven years old, you're suddenly so obsessed with boys and what they think." Lily snarled at her older sister, letting herself be dragged away. "Bye James," she said. He waved, watching her go.

He entered a sweet shop using some of the money to but himself a strange chocolate, and came out to meet Dinky.

"That's a house elf" a quiet voice said, watching Dinky. James jumped and Dinky bared her teeth.

"You know what a house elf is?" James asked the buy, taking him in. He was shorter even than James, with a large nose, greasy hair and dressed in the most peculiar outfit he'd ever seen.

"Of course I do, I'm not stupid."ย

James raised an eyebrow, something he'd seen his mother do. "I meant, you're a wizard?"

The boy looked affronted. "You didn't think I was a" he dropped his voice "Muggle, did you?"

James couldn't fathom why this boy was so upset at being called a Muggle, but let it drop, not wanting to lost a potential friend.

"No, don't worry, I'm James P-" Dinky coughed really loudly. "I'm James" he said, holding his hand out.

"Severus Snape." the boy said.

James and the boy strolled down the street discussing things ranging from Quidditch ("I love Puddlemere but by dad's got and obsession with the Chudley Canons-" "What's a Chudley Canon? Wait I don't want to know" "Oh alright") to sweets ("have you ever tried a starburst?" "no i havent i grew up pretty alone" "how have you not had a starburst")

James wasn't very sure about this boy. He seemed nice enough, but they way he spoke about Muggles was rather disconcerting for James. Not wanting to lose a new friend, James brushed it off.

James asked him if he knew any other children in their area.

"There are a couple of muggles, but who wants to bother with them?" he asked. then his eyes gleamed in a way that slightly frightened James. "But there is a witch, Lily Evans, I've been watching her for a while, building up the courage to speak to her"

"Oh, Lily? The redhead? yeah she introduced herself to me before her sister dragged her away."

Snape's eyes lost all the care, and turned stone hard. "She talked to you?"

"Yeah, she seemed super nice and-"

"You don't want to associate with her she's a filthy little mudblood anyway." he said.

Dinky snarled, and James peeled himself away from Snape's presence.ย

"She's a what?"

"A mudblood, or do you not know what that is?"

It was an outright challenge, even James could see it.

"I do know what that is, and its not a very nice thing to say." he said, trying to maintain some civility because he was pretty sure Dinky might bite Snape.

"Oh, its not nice is it?" Snape mimicked.

"You know what?" said James as his cheeks heated. "Goodbye." He turned around and walked away.

"Really? you're going to walk away?" Snape asked.

"Yes!" James told him. "Yes, I am, because you are a slimy, greasy git!"

It was the rudest thing little James had said, but Dinky chose not to reprimand him, silently glaring at Severus Snape.

The boy in question made a gesture that no nine year old should have known and stormed away.

James Potter didn't hate people the first time he ever met them but he decided to make an exception for the boy who didn't have an ounce of respect for human beings.

what do you think??? lmk!
