Phones were ringing, papers were rustling, older men talking about their grandchildren, the smell of bread and coffee was always a highlight of my day. Homicide was and has been my specialty. Jocelyn worked her ass off to be here. Sometimes she doesn't believe that she actually made it here.

Jocelyn twirled her pen around her fingers, trying to think about this case. A couple of months ago, a couple were murdered in their home, their son was missing and the person who did this, left no trace of them behind, He was like a ghost and she hated it. She didn't let this one go, she tried so hard to solve it, but she kept getting into dead ends.

"Come on Jojo, take a break." Said her partner, Bruce. He's a great guy, treated Jocelyn like a daughter. He always had her back and she always had his. For a 50-year-old man, he still can beat her with catching bad guys and doesn't break a sweat. "I saved you a donut."

"Alright alright." She picked herself from her chair and followed Bruce into the breakroom. Everyone was in there chatting. "Everyone, lets give it to our new Sargent." Jocelyn took the test about a year ago and word was, Jocelyn Peña was becoming the new Sargent in homicide. Everyone pressed her into taking it, telling her that she deserved it and would be good at it. But someone wasn't very happy about it. Bruce handed her the donut and they started talking about her time in the squad. Today was an chill day, everyone sat back, relaxed. No new cases were reported, no calls, just a good time. These days barely happen, so they cherish it. Jocelyn saw Jensen, coming into the room with an envelope.

"Jenny!" Everyone cheered. He smirks, waving at them. "Come! Help yourself."

"Thanks guys maybe later." Jensen looks at Jocelyn. "Can we talk?" She excused herself and walked out with Jensen and into the integration room.

"What?" He gives her the envelope. All it had was her name on it. She don't know what he's planning.

"Vinny found this in the front, he wanted to give it to you." He grabs her arm. "Don't do anything stupid. Whatever that has, don't do it alone."

"Thanks."

"Can we talk? About us? We-"

"There's nothing to talk about. You made it clear, you wanted a divorce." Jensen shakes his head and plays it off as the room full of detectives were looking at the newly divorced couple. They sipped their coffee and whispered stuff about them. Jensen headed out of the room and Jocelyn went to her desk. She stared at the yellow paper with her name, tore it open. There were pictures of a little boy, alive, and a note.

Jocelyn scrambles her stuff and ran to her Lieutenant's office. Lieutenant Ethan Lang, he was like a brother to her. Lang was also on the younger side, just a couple of years older than her, but he had an attitude of an older man if you did him dirty. Ethan and Jocelyn, they knew every move they would make, every lie, everything. He knew that if she had a gut feeling about something, he takes her word for it, and backs her up.

"I got him." She slammed the proof on his desk. "He's keeping Nico there." He looks through the evidence. "Lang, it's the gut feeling, I know." He nods.

"I'm calling everyone, get Bruce." Her heart started to race. She called for Bruce, they made their way into the locker room, taking their vests, and dashed out of the precinct. Adrenaline kicked in as she got closer to the warehouse. Every cop was there, everyone you can imagine. Jocelyn stepped out of the cop car.

"He wants me Lang. I go with someone, he will shoot." Lang didn't like the idea. "He wants me, and I'm here, i will not fail this kid, not again." He takes a breath.

"Don't make me regret this." She assured him with a nod.

"Hey listen up!" She yelled out, grabbing everyone's attention, all eyes on her. "Nobody is coming in with me. Unless I say so, under my authority." Everyone hummed and nodded at her response. "Nobody in." She told Lang, warning him. She made her way to the entrance and headed in. The warehouse was dark. She did her search, gun out, slowly walking in. "LAPD." Jocelyn called out. Lights turned on, there was an older man with the same kid. Jocelyn had her gun focused on him. "Let the boy go!" The man holding the boy was his uncle, the one she interviewed, the one who found the bodies. Son of a bitch. "Jake, don't do this in front of him. Let him go."

"You came alone? Like I asked?"

"Just like you told me in the note. Nobody is here besides me." She lied. "Listen to me, let Nico go and you can leave here a free man."

"Toss the gun." He still had the gun pointed at Nico. He was scared, has been crying. He murmured some words but she couldn't hear them.

"Okay." Jocelyn unloaded the gun, kicking it to the side and putting her hands up.

"Now the vest." He started to wave the gun.

"I can't do that. I did something for you, now you do something for me, okay? How about you stop pointing the gun at Nico, hm?" It took a minute but he turns the gun to Jocelyn, making her flinch. "Alright, good. Jake, listen to me-"

"I'm done listening! The bitch deserved it! She was supposed to be with me! She said that she'll leave him so she can be with me. When I saw her, she was still with my brother! She lied!" Jake cried.

"She did. She did lie to you but come on, don't do this in front of Nico."

"Vest!" Then he pointed the gun again at Nico. "I will do it." Jocelyn coughed. She slowly started to take off her vest, now tossing it to the side.

"Okay, now let Nico go. You want me, I'm here. Just you and me." Just as he was about to, in the corner of her eye, black-armored men with guns came rushing in. Jocelyn's eyes widen. "No!" She yelled at them. Jake notices and starts shooting. First, he shot Jocelyn in the stomach, then Nico. Another shot was for Jake himself. Jocelyn fell back and hit the ground, gasping for air, reaching out for Nico. She saw Lang, Bruce, and Jensen running towards her. Lang started to put pressure on her wound. Bruce held her hand as Jocelyn started to choke on own blood.

"We need a medic!" Jensen yells out. Everything went fuzzy and went black. "Its gonna be okay, stay will me Jojo."

Jocelyn head was pounding as she started to wake up. She looked around saw that she was at the hospital. Tears started to come out. Jocelyn starts to push off the blanket and the IVs.

"Okay JP, lay back." Lang stood up, trying to put her back to bed. "Jocelyn."

"Wha-what happened?" Jocelyn said in a scratchy voice. She was still out of it. Everything was fuzzy.

"You were shot by Jake Vics. You need to lay down."

"What? I told you to stay back. It was under my authority. Why would-" Jocelyn was trying to get her words together, but she stuttered the whole time. Jocelyn shut her eyes tight. "Why would you do that?"

"They said that you were in there too long and had to get the move in." Bruce came in with Jensen.

"The boy? Nico? Where is he?" Nobody said a thing. They all looked at each other. Jocelyn got out of bed, pulling the IV out of her arm, and grabbed her clothes. Jensen holds her as she stumbled. "I'm fine!"

"Nico, he uh..." Lang cuts off. He didn't even look at her.

"He what Ethan?"

"Vics got him. I'm sorry Jocelyn, he didn't make it." Jocelyn didn't want to believe it. She shook her head.

"What?" She closed her eyes. The men tried to talk, voices overlapping and louder. "No. Stop talking to me, thats not true." She rubbed her eyes.

"It was too late. He was gone before he hit the floor. Vics survived, he missed and now-." Jocelyn held on to Jensen's arm. She kept repeating no over and over again. She let that boy die. She killed him. She wept, Jensen caught her. Jocelyn's screams were heard through the whole floor. They put her back to the bed and didn't say a word. Jocelyn's mom came, crying to see her daughter laying on the bed, a gunshot wound to the stomach. She brushed her hair back, whispering her prayers into Jocelyn's ear.

"I couldn't save him." She cried to her mom.

Jocelyn was on temporary leave, Lang wanted Jocelyn to get better before she came back. She had to do a lot of things to come back, speak to her therapist about what happened, her wound had to be healed completely. It was a pain and she hated it. She was home alone. All Jocelyn had was her dog. Her mom would stop by with Jocelyn's twin brother and sister, Issac and Yessina, cooking for her, take her to her appointments, making sure she was okay. Then, her older brother, Alex, all the way from New York, came by. Who else is coming? The pope?

They all acted like Jocelyn couldn't do anything herself. She couldn't get myself a glass of water or cut some damn strawberries. She was fragile, she hated it. A month passed and she got the okay from her doctors and that meant she got to go back to work. That morning she was so happy that made herself breakfast. she put on a button up, kissing Mulder goodbye.

Jocelyn got out of her car, heading into the station. It was just so nice to be back. The station was louder than usual, but that didn't matter to her. She hopped on the elevator and went to the homicide floor. The floor was quiet. Strange. The desks were empty, with no detectives anywhere.

"Welcome back!" All the men jumped out. She placed her hand over her chest, laughing. They threw her a welcoming party. They took Jocelyn to the breakroom and started to cut the cake. It was nice to be back.

"Peña, a moment?" Lang peeks his head through the door. She sense something was wrong. The room went quiet, so she dropped her plate and headed to his office. He had this look, a sad one.

"Lang, what's going on?" She closed the door behind her.

"You're being transferred." He hands her some papers. She skims through the papers. "Special Victims in New York." New York. Transfer. Wow. This caught her off guard.

"Is this because-" She tosses the papers onto the chair.

"No. I thought it would be a good change, they needed people, a friend of mine, said so. I didn't want to let you go but, I do believe that this will be a good thing." Lang takes off his glasses. "I can't have you blaming yourself." She sat down on the chair, running her fingers through her hair. "I'm giving you a month in advance, look for a place, get settled, tell your mom."

"It's like you been waiting for this moment to come." Jocelyn joked.

"You can spend the rest of day here, take it easy. Enjoy your party." She went back to the breakroom. They all didn't know, she watched them all be happy. By the end of the day, she was at her desk, putting her stuff into a small box.

"I'm going to miss you." Bruce leans back. He knew. He saw it earlier when she walked back into the gathering and well, the box. "Youll do good in New York."

"You think so?" She scrunches her nose.

"Of course I do, I believe in you." He pats her shoulder. "You are the greatest partner I ever had in my years of working in homicide. You'll do amazing." She gave him a hug. This one was tough. Going to say goodbye to Bruce. "Your new partner will be lucky to have you." Nobody can be better than Bruce.

"Don't be a stranger okay?"

"Good luck, detective." She looked at her box and tossed him a small stuff animal she had. Bruce laughed as he used to tease her about the rough looking stuffed dog.

"To remember me by. So long partner." Jocelyn gave him a small smile and went to Langs office. He was still here, doing paperwork. She set her box on the empty chair in front of him and stick out her hand. "Lieutenant." He stands up and takes it.

"Jensen left with Cruz on a case, he won't be-."

"I'm not here to talk about Jensen. I'm here to say goodbye."

"Right." He clicks tongue. "You made a big impact here. You're the only one that had the real balls to do anything. You are one of the best detectives that has ever step foot here." He takes a deep breath. "I have a gut feeling you'll like it there." She chuckled to herself. That gut feeling.

"Ill hold you to that Ethan." She picked up her box and opened the door, but she turned back around. "Hey Ethan?" He hums. "Don't blame yourself for what happened to me." She tapped the doorframe and walked out of the station. She did start to tear up as she left.

Jocelyn headed to her moms house to tell her the news. Jocelyn's mom still lived in Jocelyn's childhood home for many reasons, one, thats where she had good memories with her dad, who passed away a few years ago, two, thats where her and Alex grew up and wanted the twins to grow up here too.

Jocelyn opened the door to the home, the twins were in the living room, Issac was playing with his video games and Yessina on her phone. Such teenagers. She saw their moms head peeked from the kitchen.

"Oye! Issac! Yessina! Your sister is here." They just lifted their heads and waved hi.

"Hi to you too." She kissed their heads and went to help their mom with the groceries. "Wheres Alex?" He was staying here for a few days for god knows what.

"Upstairs." She looks at the clock and then at Jocelyn. "Aren't you supposed to be at work?"

"Yeah about that. They're transferring me up to New York." She put her hands on her hips. "I got a month." She heard Alex coming down the stairs.

"A month for what?" He grabs a piece of meat and tossed in the air to catch it with his mouth.

"Jo's job is kicking her off to New York." She heard Yessina call out. She doesn't say hi but she likes to butt into her personal life. She always is the one trying to get her to date, but it doesn't work. She walks into the trio they had, still on her phone.

"Thats great! Me and Evelyn were just looking at new places for us and the kids to live they got some nice apartments for you. You know what, don't worry about it, i got you." He claps. Oh boy.

"Plus there is a lot of hot guys in New York, see." She turns her phone to Jocelyn, she was on a dating app. "I made you one right now. I mean look at this fine lawyer, come on!" She shook her head. Always gotta do this.

"I'm not going to New York to date, Yessi. My career comes first. I dont need a man."

"She is right." My mom agreed.

"Thank you!" Jocelyn claps.

"No, Yessi is right. You need to start dating." Jocelyn rolled her eyes.

"Youre getting cranky." Yessina and their mom laughed. The boys curled their lips in disgust.

"You can't keep drowning yourself with work. You have to live a little. New York suits you."Their mom kissed Jocelyns cheek. "Dont worry about us, i got this. Its your turn to make the best of your life."
