iii. worried soulmates and open caskets

"It's been a day! Why isn't she answering?" Rebekah yelled as she and her brothers gathered in Mia's living room.

Eventually, they had all chosen to stay there, taking turns sleeping in the girl's bed which was the only thing that brought comfort to them during her absence.

"What did you say to her, Elijah? You talked to her last," Klaus asked.

The suited man held his head in his hands, "I told her I loved her."

"You did what?" They all yelled.

Kol breathed out, "Of course she isn't answering. You scared her off."

"I didn't scare her off! She told me she would call me back in a few hours. Something must have happened."

"Is there any way we can tell? It's not like the news is covering thi-"

"Would you like to know the status of Ms. Rutherford?" The robotic voice of Friday asked, cutting Rebekah off.

"Can we?"

"Of course. Ms. Rutherford gave me special permission to tell you anything necessary. Ms. Rutherford is currently unconscious. She has traces of chloroform in her system aswell as an untraceable amount of midazolam in her blood. Her location is unknown. But I can see that Ms. Romanoff is with her or at least near her."

They stayed silent.

"It appears you are all in shock. Would you like me to go through breathing techniques? Both Ms. Rutherford and Mr. Stark recommend the 5,4,3,2,1 method. It proves to be very effective during such times."

"Can you tell what country she is in?" Elijah asked softly after a few minutes.

"Unknown. Her tracker has been turned off."

"She's still..." Kol trailed off, "She's still alive?"

"Yes. She is only unconscious, Mr. Mikaelson. Her last known whereabouts were in Ms. Romanoff's mother's home, Melina Vostokoff. Red Guardian, Alexei Shostakov, was also spotted there. It is likely that Ms. Rutherford is with them."

"What about her dad? Where'd he go?"

"He disappeared when Ms. Rutherford and Ms. Romanoff were attacked by Red Room assassins in Budapest. Ms. Rutherford suspects they captured him or that he ran."

"What about the Avengers? Where the hell are they?"

"The available ones are searching but have found nothing. The rest, however, are on missions of their own or are off-world. The only ones available are Mr. Stark, Mr. Rogers and Ms. Maximoff."

"What about Peter? Where's the kid?"

"Mr. Parker has not been informed of his sister's disappearance. Mr. Stark does not want to worry the boy."

Kol stood up angrily, "Well,, then we are going to find her."

"Ms. Rutherford assumed you would say that if something happened so she recorded a voice message. Would you like me to play it?"

"Yes."

"Hey, asshats," She greeted earning small chuckles from the four, "If you're listening to this, that means I'm either dead or off the radar. Don't worry, I'm probably fine. If I'm going to die, it's going to be in a cool way, not by some old asshole named Dreykov. Don't come after me- I mean it. I know you're thinking about it- I know and I'm asking you not to."

"If Friday says I'm still breathing, that means I will come home to you so stop worrying and get your asses out of my apartment, it's weird," A door slammed in the background of the message before they heard Mia sigh, "Ugh, Alexei's back. God, he's annoying. Anyway, to summarize, do not come looking for me. I will probably be home in a day or so, so stop being dramatic."

The audio cut out then which caused them all to sigh. She was right, they were probably overreacting. But with Friday saying she was unconscious and full of drugs, they couldn't stop worrying.

"When should she wake up? Can you tell?" Elijah asked.

"It appears she is waking up right now. There has been a slight spike in her heartbeat."

Mia opened her eyes only to see a bright white light above her. The thought of her being dead crossed her mind until her vision cleared, revealing it was a light above her.

She moved to hold her hand above her eyes only to be held back by restraints.

"Calm down, child," A man spoke beside her as he walked towards her with a marker in his hand.

"Who are you?"

"That's not important."

The man was wearing average doctor scrubs but she didn't have much time to analyze him as he traced the marker along her hairline.

She breathed out as he pulled away, "This is a much less cool way to die."

The doctor pulled out a device before powering it on. It whirred as the blade spun.

"Guess I won't be having an open casket, huh?" She asked as she watched the man approach her with the mechanical saw.

Natasha and Alexei woke up in a pair of cells not even ten minutes before.

"I can't save us, Natasha," He spoke as he pressed his forehead against the glass. "I need you to know that I'm sorry. I pledged my life to a cause. You know, I thought I was being very brave. Possibly the bravest. But I wasn't being brave. I was a coward."

"In Cuba, when they came and took you away from me," He sighed, "No cause is worth that. You should only sacrifice yourself for something..." He paused as he fell through the door when the glass opened.

"How did you do that?" He asked as he stood up, facing Natasha.

"I designed these cells myself."

"What?" He asked as she pulled off a mask revealing the face of Melina, "What?"

"I bared my soul to you and it was just you the whole time?"

"Yes, I'm afraid so," She told him before walking over to the cell next to hers, "Get up, Luke. I believe your daughter needs you."

The man woke up immediately, his brown eyes widening at her words, "Mia? She's here?"

"Take this and tell her she has a two-inch blade in her belt," Melina told him as she handed him a comm.

Alexei went to speak but Luke shushed him, "Wait, shh, Mia, it's me. It's Daddy."

"What, Elijah?" Mia asked, causing the doctors to look at her oddly. She quickly spoke up once more, "What are you going to do to me?"

"You have a two-inch blade concealed in your beltline."

The doctors stayed silent as they filled up a needle.

"Outside right hip," Luke told her.

Mia's hand moved slowly towards her hip until she gripped the knife.

"Keep her awake for the cranial incisions," A doctor spoke in Russian as he approached her with a needle.

She acted quickly, cutting the restraints that held her to the table before slashing the blade across his chest.

She cut the rest of the restraints before kicking a different doctor in the face. Another approached her from behind, shoving a needle in her shoulder causing her to cry out before slamming his body against the ground.

She landed against the hard ground before kicking his face, knocking him out entirely.

The last doctor stood only for Mia to throw her knife into his heart.

She grunted as she stood, glancing at her shoulder before pulling out the needle. She placed it down on a table before grabbing her vest which had been conveniently placed there for her to take.

As she put her vest back on, she walked through an empty hallway, "I'm guessing this was Melina's doing. She couldn't have told me sooner?"

"Don't throw a fit. There wasn't time," Melina told her through a comm of her own.

— — —

"Where did he take the vials?" Mia asked as she wiped away the marker that was on her forehead.

"Probably down to cold storage. Dreykov still has the widows under his control so you have to expose them to the antidote."

"Yeah. Sure. Easy," She answered sarcastically. "Fri? Are you still there?"

"Affirmative, Ms. Rutherford. Mr. Stark and the Mikaelsons are very worried," The voice told her quietly, almost as if she knew it wasn't safe to talk loudly.

"Tell them I'm okay. Block any calls they try to make, I can't have them distracting me right now."

"Of course. They have been notified now."

"Thanks."

— — —

"Ms. Rutherford has told me to inform you that she is indeed okay," Friday spoke through a speaker in Mia's home.

"Oh, thank god," Klaus muttered under his breath. None of them had breathed since they heard the news.

"Can you tell where she is now?"

"She is in the custody of the Red Room. However, she is currently sneaking through a vent."

"A vent? Really?"

"Would you like me to hack into video footage of where she is right now?"

"Yes."

— — —

Mia's legs dropped through the vent before she dropped down, landing with one knee bent and the other leg straight. She shimmied slightly as she stood up, "Uh. That was disgusting."

She hid against a wall, glancing past it and seeing a singular guard. Mia ran towards him, holding his neck with her right arm as she flipped her body around him before kicking out his legs.

She stood up, panting slightly before dragging his body over to the wall and pressing his hand against the scanner.

She walked through yet another hallway, this one cooler than the others before grabbing the red vials out of a fridge.

"Melina, I found the location of the vials."

"I've had a slight set-back. You'll need to get to the widows."

Not even a minute later, the woman spoke once more, "Mia. Slight change of plan: I completely demolished one of the engines and we are going into a controlled crash."

"Fantastic. I'm heading to the widows now," She responded as she ran through yet another halfway, lights flashing red around her.

"No," She muttered when she ran inside the room only for it to be empty.

She glanced at the wall before pulling a bomb off of it and strapping the vials to it with a hair band. She began running once more, this time faster than ever as she tried to find Dreykov's office where Natasha was.

"Where am I going, Fri?"

"Two lefts and a right, Ms. Rutherford."

As she ran into the room she quickly threw the bomb. It detonated mid air, red mist covering the air and the widows who had been beating Natasha.

She watched as the widows came to their senses, confusion filling their eyes as she glanced around the room.

Mia sighed as he ran towards her sister, helping her up, "Hey... Are you okay?"

Natasha grunted.

"That looks like it hurts," Mia noted as she looked at the redhead's shoulder. "Okay, I take out on three. Ready?" She pulled out the knife, "I'm sorry."

"What do we do now?" One of the widows asked in Finnish.

"Get as far away from here as possible. You get to make your own choices now," Natasha told them before another explosion went off. "We gotta get out of here."

Mia shook her head, "We need to find Dreykov. Are you coming?"

"I'm right behind you," Natasha told her.

Mia led the widows out, running away from the room in synchronized form until they reached the airstrip.

She got them in a jet safely before she ran further, using a grappling hook before she landed on the jet which Dreykov was in.

She grunted as she landed before pulling her body up to one of the engines.

She grabbed her baton, twisting it so it became twice the size.

"Mia! Don't do it!" She heard Natasha yell.

"This was fun!"

"No!"

Mia grunted as she shoved the baton into the engine. It exploded instantly, the act causing her body to be sent flying.

Natasha ran towards the edge, grabbing a parachute before jumping off.

She dived downwards as she followed Mia's unconscious body until she grabbed her. She quickly strapped the parachute onto her frame before pulling the strap.

They flew upwards as the fabric blew out.

Natasha held her sister tightly, glancing behind her shoulder only to see the Taskmaster following behind them. She nodded at Mia before letting go.

Mia was hopeless as she watched the Taskmaster grab her sister's body, the pair fighting as they got closer and closer to the ground.

It wasn't until she noticed a parachute emit that she let out a relieved breath.

Natasha breathed heavily as she kneeled on the ground, watching as the Taskmaster stood up easily, walking towards her.

"Okay. Let's go," She spoke before standing up and grabbing the wrist of the woman before her, stopping her from stabbing her sword into her stomach.

Using her leverage, she kicked the woman's chest, taking the sword in her own hands.

As the Taskmaster approached her though, she put her arms up, "Enough."

The Taskmaster grabbed onto Natasha's neck before flipping her body over her shoulder. Natasha had the upper hand, resting on the Taskmaster's shoulders, holding up her arm before opening the woman's mask.

As soon as the mask was off, she smashed the last red vial in her face.

Her eyes went wide as the cure filled her senses.

"I'm sorry. I'm sorry," Natasha whispered as she held onto the woman.

"Is he gone?"

"He's gone."

She stood up, glancing around the rubble as she called out for her sister. "Mia!"

She glanced around quickly until she spotted a white parachute that was attached to the body of Mia. She ran before kneeling down, holding the younger girl's face, "Mia?"

The girl chuckled softly as she opened her eyes. She groaned as she sat up, Natasha's hands wrapping around her shoulders, "Forgive me, little sister. I shouldn't have lied to you."

"You don't have to say that. It's okay."

"Hey. You're my family. I will never lie to you again."

She smiled as she leaned her forehead against her sisters before pulling her into a hug, "I love you, Natasha."

"I love you too, Mia."

They glanced over as they watched Alexei, Melina and Luke walk towards them, both men helping Melina walk.

"Everybody good?"

"I am clearly injured," Melina answered.

Mia glanced at Luke before pulling him into a hug. "Hey, dad."

He smiled as he held onto his daughter for what felt like the first time in years, "Hey, sweetheart."

As she pulled away she looked back to her sister before undoing her vest. "You should have this. I know how much you like it."

"Shucks," Natasha teased as she grabbed the vest. "It does have a lot of pockets."

"Very handy pockets, yeah."

Natasha grabbed a vile from her pocket before handing it to Melina, "He had widows all around the world. You will have to copy the formula."

They glanced over when they heard a plane's engine whirr. As soon as it landed, the widows walked out.

"You came back for us," Mia spoke as she walked towards them.

"We wouldn't leave you behind."

"Thank you."

They all packed into the jet before taking off once more.

Mia sat beside the sleeping Taskmaster as she held her phone to her ear. "Hey..."

"Hey..." his voice trailed off, filled with relief as he heard her voice.

"I love you too, Elijah."
