i. car chases and phone calls

"Natasha..." Mia whispered, dragging out the syllables as she walked into an apartment in Budapest where the widow was supposedly hiding.

"Come out, come out wherever you are," She teased as she held up her gun as she stalked through the apartment.

"I know you're in here."

She walked further inside, checking each room before she reached the kitchen where Natasha stood, holding her gun up in a defensive position, "Mia?"

"Long time no see, sestra," The blonde spoke as she stared at the red-headed woman before her.

"So are we gonna talk like grown ups?" Natasha asked.

"Is that what we are? Put it down."

"You put yours down," The older Avenger told her as she walked closer causing Mia to take a few steps back only to trip slightly on a ledge. "Watch your step."

Mia chuckled softly. They stood not even a foot apart before they both put their guns down, "I have to admit, that was a little dramatic, even your you, sestra."

Natasha smiled, "You just had to come to Budapest, didn't you?"

"I heard you were attacked. I figured you would lay low here," The blonde told her as she glanced inside the fridge before pulling out a bottle of vodka and two shot glasses.

Natasha sighed before pulling out a package of red vials, "What are these?"

"You brought them back here?" Mia asked with wide eyes.

"You need to tell me what the hell these are."

Mia sighed, her father would be joining them any minute. She had sent him to secure the perimeter before she had entered, mainly because she couldn't stand another minute with him after their long flight.

"It's a synthetic gas. The counteragent to chemical subjugation. The gas immunizes the brain's neuropathways from external manipulation."

Natasha scoffed, "Maybe in English next time?"

"It's an antidote to mind control," Mia told her in Russian.

"Real mature," Natasha scoffed.

"Why don't you take it to Tony? He can explain it to you."

"I don't wanna be here. I'm on the run. You could've gotten me killed. I didn't even know I had these, Mia. You could have at least told me."

"Well, what was I supposed to do? You're the only superhero person that I know I can trust with my life. That was the whole reason I gave it to you. Did you know the Red Room is still active?"

"What? Taking down the Red Room? What are you talking about? It's been gone for years. Dreykov's dead. I killed him. You know that."

"If you're so sure, then tell me what happened. Tell me exactly."

"We rigged bombs. We imploded a five-story building and then shot it out with the Hungarian Special Forces. Took 10 days in hiding before we could even get out of Budapest."

"And you checked the body? Confirmed the kill?" Mia asked, already knowing the answer.

"There was no body left to check."

Mia sighed, "You're forgetting Dreykov's daughter."

Before Natasha could answer, a bomb exploded a hole in the ceiling. Natasha quickly grabbed the red vials before hiding behind a wall, Mia doing the same.

They listened as the door slammed open and multiple assailants walked in. Natasha quickly shoved the vials into her bag before strapping it to her back.

Mia glanced through the doorway and watched as two more assailants jumped through the hole in the ceiling, both armed with rifles.

As soon as they were looking away, Mia quickly ran into the next room. The sounds of her footsteps caught the attention of the assailants who quickly fired in her direction.

She kept running until she was held against a wall by Natasha who twisted a switch which set off multiple bombs in the small apartment.

With the assailants distracted, they easily fought their way out before running like hell.

They glanced down the balcony only to see two more who immediately began shooting at them. The other ones inside shot at them from below the staircase.

Mia quickly grabbed a bomb from her suit jacket, which was actually Elijah's, before throwing it down the staircase.

"Where are we trying to get?" Mia asked as she and Natasha ran up the stairs.

"Motorbike! East side of the building," Her sister answered as they moved.

They jumped out of a window and landed on a roof before sliding down the green metal. They continued running until they reached the harsh edge.

Mia glanced back and saw an assailant on their tail. "Fuck," She muttered before pulling the pin on a pipe.

They both grabbed onto it as it fell from the room, however, the assailant didn't give up. Instead, she continued running before grabbing Natasha's arm.

Natasha, being the good person she is, continued to hold onto the woman. "I got you," SHe yelled only for the woman to grab a knife and slash into the redhead's arm.

"No!" She screamed as the woman fell to the ground.

The pipe smashed into the building beside them, knocking Natasha through a window. Mia held onto the windows ledge tightly only for her hands to slip.

Her body slammed against multiple metal vents before she reached the hard concrete ground. Landing on her feet, she stared at the assailant who laid on the ground.

Mia slowly approached her, holding out her hand, "Hey. Don't move. You're hurt. Let me help you," She spoke as she walked closer.

The woman, however, grabbed onto her wrist, powering up her bracelet which glowed red as she aimed it at Mia.

Her arm however slowly moved to her own face, "I don't want to do this," She whispered as she cried.

Quiet beeps emitted from the red device on her wrist. "What are you doing?"

"He's making me," The woman told her before the red device went off, killing her instantly.

Mia ran towards her body, kneeling before her as Natasha ran down, holding one of the vials in her hand.

The red head sighed as she glanced at the now dead body of the assailant. She was no older than Mia.

"Do you believe me now?" The blonde asked as she stood up.

"How many others?"

"Enough. Come, we need to get out of here."

Her father had clearly left when he saw the assailants. So much for loyalty.

They ran through an empty street before approaching a line of motorbikes, "Which ones yours?" Mia asked.

"Black. Brown seat."

Natasha quickly got on first before Mia got on behind her.

On the road beside them, a car blew up, "Any day now!" Mia shouted as a tank approached them.

The engine roared as they sped down the small street, the tank quickly following behind them.

Now, on a busy street, another assailant began following them on a motorbike. They swerve past cars, speeding in front of a train before hitting a concrete railing, knocking them both off of the small vehicle.

They grunted as they landed on the street. A man exited his car, "Are you okay?" He asked in Hungarian only for Mia to hold him at gunpoint before stealing his car.

"You can't just steal a guy's car," Natasha scolded her as she got into the driver's seat.

"So you want me to chase him down and un-steal it?"

Natasha backed up, hitting the car behind them.

"Okay. Any time now, please."

"Shut up!" Natasha yelled back as bullets shot through the windows. She quickly pulled out of the spot they were stuck in before driving away.

The motorbike, however, continued to follow them.

The sounds of 'who let the dogs out' filled their ears as Mia's phone rang. She grunted as she pulled out the device, "Shit."

"Who is that?" Natasha yelled as more bullets shot through the already broken windows.

"Clingy soulmate! I'll explain it later," She yelled back before answering. She knew if she didn't, Klaus would continue to call her.

"What?" She yelled through the phone.

"Love? Are you alright?" He asked quickly as he heard the sounds of tires squeaking and gunshots going off.

"Absolutely fantastic," She told him before looking at Natasha, "Okay, you got a plan or shall I just stay duck and cover?"

"Yeah, my plan was to drive us away."

"That's a shit plan," Mia told her before grabbing the wheel and spinning the car to face the motorbike.

She quickly opened her door before kicking it off, knocking the woman off her bike.

Natasha spun the car back around.

"You're welcome," She told her before grabbing her phone once more, "I can't really talk right now, Nik."

She glanced back as the tank trampled over cars, following them quickly.

"Oh shit, she's back."

"Darling? It's Kol. Are you alright?" The vampire's voice practically yelled through the phone, worry evident in his tone.

She watched as the masked person stood up front on the roof of the tank before loading a mechanic bow.

"Put your seatbelt on," Natasha told her. Mia quickly did as told, knowing it would be stupid not to.

"You're such a mom," Mia grunted, "I'm fine, Kol."

The car continued to swerve until it was blown into the air by an arrow the woman behind them had shot.

The car went in a full 180 before slipping through an underground train station.

Natasha got out first, going to grab Mia only for the girl to grunt, "Natasha, no," She grunted once more as she slowly slipped through the broken window, noticing blood covering her hand. "I think I'm bleeding."

Natasha ignored her as she pulled her out all the way before dragging her out of the crowded room.

They quickly slid down an escalator. Mia glanced back as she watched the Taskmaster throw her shield.

Timing seemed to be on their side though when they quickly jumped off before the shield could slice their bodies in half.

They continued running before hiding in a vent.

They watched silently as the Taskmaster approached a grate in the floor where Mia had left most of her blood before jumping through it.

Mia groaned as she wrapped a piece of cloth around her arm, tightening it with her teeth.

"You okay?" Natasha asked.

"Yeah. Great plan. I love the part where I almost bled to death," Mia told her as she grabbed her phone. The screen was cracked but the call was still ongoing.

"Love?"

"Darling?"

"Are you okay, Elskan?"

"Deyja? Come on, answer us."

The blonde grunted as she leaned against the wall of the small vent, "I'm okay," She told them as she held the phone loosely against her ear.

"It didn't sound like that for the last five minutes!" Kol exclaimed.

Mia smiled slightly, glancing at Natasha who stared at her in confusion.

"I said I'm fine, Kol."

"Who the hell is that guy?" The redhead asked, not caring that she was interrupting.

"Dreykov's special project. She can mimic anyone she's ever seen. It's like fighting a mirror. Dreykov only deploys her on top-priority missions," She explained, reciting exactly what her father had told her on the way to Budapest.

"This doesn't make any sense."

"Well, the truth rarely makes sense when you omit key details."

"What is that supposed to mean?"

Mia sighed, "I'll call you back," She told them before hanging up and looking back at Natasha, "You didn't say one word about Dreykov's daughter. You killed her."

"I had to... I needed her to lead me to Dreykov. His daughter was collateral damage. I needed her to be sure."

"And here you are, not so sure."

"I needed out."

Mia breathed out, "Why didn't you tell me?"

"I didn't want to see that look on your face– the one you have right now. I can see your disappointment... How do you know about all of this?"

"My father paid me a visit."

"Luke?"

"That's the one. He told me about what the Red Room was doing. Told me about their new experiments, how you got into shield. Remember when I went out on my last mission for Dreykov?"

She nodded.

"Remember how odd I was acting when I came back? You thought it was because of the torture I endured for getting another agent killed but it was because I had been cured. They weren't able to chemically subjugate your brain because you were too old, but me? My brain had barely even started developing, I was such an easy target."

"That's how you have the vials. You took them on that mission."

"I did. Once I was in my right mind, I stashed them. I knew I couldn't leave you behind, so I went back."

Natasha stared at her in shock, "You could have been free but you came back for me?"

"Of course I did. You're my sister, Natasha. You would have done the same."

They stayed silent after that, both overcoming the shock they had just been through.

"Soulmates, huh?" Natasha asked after a few minutes with a small smile.

The blonde's lip twitched upwards as she thought about the four vampires, "Yeah."
