◇◇◇

We split up, but it was difficult because Toji didn't possess any cursed energy, so he couldn't be easily tracked. I focused my energy on the surroundings, more to the north, but found nothing. Instead, I sensed the presence of Megumi and Nobara! Damn, it was too late; he had already noticed me.

Megumi and Nobara came up the stairs. Megumi noticed me first.

"Ah, Miura-sensei."

Nobara, with a bubble tea in hand, practically shouted, "Oh, MIURA SENSEI!"

I smiled, "Hey, kids."

 Megumi looked puzzled.

"What are you doing around here? You're never usually here."

Nobara chimed in, "Yeah, Megumi's right. You're never around here!"

"Ah, I just wanted to take a walk."

Nobara, not the sharpest tool in the shed, didn't question things, but with Megumi, you had to be careful; he had a sharp mind.

Nobara happily exclaimed, "Oh, okay! Then enjoy the weather, Sensei. There's a great boutique back there!"

I chuckled, "Really? I'll check it out."

They continued on, but Megumi said nothing, just gave me one last skeptical look. I quickly turned and headed down the stairs. Once I was sure I was out of earshot, I took out my phone and tapped out a message to Gojo.

"How's it going on your end?"

He replied with a "👎"

 "Fuck," I typed back.

Toji Fushiguro could really suppress his presence well. I wandered through the park, lost in thought.

A little kid bumped into me, wide-eyed, saying to his mom, "Mom, look, someone with white hair!"

I looked at the child, surprised, and the mother pulled him away, giving me an apologetic look. I smiled at her. True, it's rare to find someone with white hair anywhere in the world.

"Miura, focus!"

The evening continued in a similar vein. I searched one side of the city while Gojo searched the other. I gave up hope. That old bastard took hide-and-seek too seriously. I slumped down on a bench, defeated, gazing up at the pitch-black sky, with a few stars visible. Gojo teleported in front of me, startling me. I looked in his direction. He sat down next to me, also looking defeated.

He wore a white shirt with black pants. He had his sunglasses on, but he took them off and buried his face in his hands, rubbing his eyes in despair. I felt bad because partly, it was my fault.

"I'm sorry," I said.

He shook his head and looked at the ants on the ground, following their queen. "No, it's not your fault. I was careless..."

He clenched his fists, whispering to himself, "And it repeats..."

I didn't quite catch the last part, but I could swear he meant, "And it all repeats again," right?

I looked at him, puzzled, feeling a bit uneasy. "What repeats?"

 He scoffed. "Forget it."

I was getting really fed up with his secrecy. "What's going on, Gojo?"

He looked surprised, tilting his head to the left. His six eyes, activated, seemed to brighten the surroundings like LED lights.

 "I don't know what you're talking about."

It didn't sound particularly convincing.

"If you're going to lie, do it better."

He stood up slowly, ignoring my comment.

"Forget it; he won't show up now, probably not for months or years." He said it with such certainty.

 I sighed, "Agreed."

We both stood up and teleported to my office. I gave him an annoyed look.

"What's this? You're not planning on coming in, are you?"

He put his index finger on my lips, signaling for silence. I glared at him, but at the same time, I felt a strange sensation as he touched me. I hastily opened the door and practically ran inside. I saw Megumi sitting on the couch, leaning forward, staring into his cup as steam rose. He was clearly lost in thought.

I looked at Gojo, surprised. So, he put his finger on my lips to signal me to be quiet because he knew Megumi was inside.

Surprised, I asked Megumi, "What are you doing here, Megumi?"

He looked up, and I could tell he already knew, but I wanted to delay the conversation.

Gojo stepped in, "You know, don't you, Megumi?"

I looked at him, shocked, signaling with my eyes, "What the hell are you doing?"

He shook his head slightly in response, "There's no point in delaying it."

He was right, but still... Megumi was only 15, and how do you explain to him that his father ran away?

Megumi glanced at Gojo and then at me, "I already guessed it in the park, because I sensed Gojo-sensei's presence on the other side of the city, and yours here. It couldn't be a coincidence that you're so perfectly divided, so I finally concluded that you're working together, but I didn't know for what until I got home..."

At the word "home," he tensed up slightly, becoming stiff.

His gaze was empty, and it broke my heart.

I leaned against the desk, crossing my arms over my chest, "As expected from Megumi, always drawing the best conclusions."

He looked at Gojo, "Where is he?"

Gojo sighed, "We didn't find him."

Megumi scoffed, "So he really did disappear into thin air."

I took a deep breath, "I promise you, we'll find him."

Megumi stood up and went to the door, pausing briefly, "I wouldn't want a father like that back, anyway."

I opened my mouth, looking at him with pain in my eyes.

Gojo said softly, desperate, "Megumi..."

Megumi's hands clenched into fists, his lips trembling as if he were trying to suppress his tears, and he walked out.

Gojo and I looked at each other, feeling desperate.
