Death Can Make a Crack
"Jasper, babes!" Lila exclaims, running up to hug Jasper. He grabs her by the waist and spins her around, making her giggle. Riley, watching the scene unfold, hold the urge to roll her eyes dramatically and just shakes her head.
"Hey, my little model. Oh, hey to you too, Riley," Jasper says with a grin, setting Lila down before turning to wave at Riley.
"Hey, Jake," Riley replies dryly, walking past them and heading straight for the car.
Jasper furrows his brow in confusion, glancing down at Lila, who just shrugs and mutters, "Ignore it."
"Okay," Jasper says with a laugh, shaking it off. "So, we're heading to the school, right?" he asks while making his way to the driver's seat.
"No," Riley interrupts as she opens the back door and slides in. "We've got to pick up Luna. I promised to get her."
"Luna?" Jasper asks, raising an eyebrow. "Like the girl from Harry Potter?" He glances at the two with a hopeful grin, clearly expecting a laugh.
But Lila and Riley just stare at him, their expressions unamused.
Jasper clears his throat awkwardly, turning back to the steering wheel. "Okay, Never-mind," he mumbles, starting the car.
After a 13 minute drive, they stop at Luna's house who runs out of her house. "Hey, machos!" Luna says opening the door to the back seat sliding into the seat with Riley.
"Hey, Ri-Ri!" Luna says, hugging Riley as soon as she slides it before shutting the door.
"Ri-Ri?" Riley asks with a soft laugh, making Luna shrugs.
"Just came up at the moment," Luna says with an innocent smile as she slides into the car.
"Hey, uh, is anyone else coming?" Jasper asks, turning to Riley while keeping one hand on the steering wheel.
Riley glances down at her phone. "No, she said she can't make it," she replies, slipping her phone into her pocket.
"Alright. Everyone good?" Jasper asks, looking back briefly before settling in his seat.
A chorus of quiet "yeahs" fills the car as everyone gets comfortable.
Jasper starts the engine and pulls away from the curb, driving toward the school. Luna leans her head on Riley's shoulder, closing her eyes. Riley shifts slightly but lets her rest, closing her eyes too as the car hums along.
A Few Hours Later
The school assembly is about to begin. Riley and Luna meet up with their friend group and find seats together. Sienna squeezes in beside them, while Ethan takes a seat on Riley's other side. Sophie sits directly in front of them, already scrolling through her phone.
A few rows back, Lila and Jasper sit together, chatting quietly. Jasper leans back casually, while Lila plays with her nails, her eyes darting around the crowded auditorium.
The chatter in the room gradually dies down as the principal steps onto the stage, signaling the assembly's start. Riley exchanges a glance with Luna
A soft ding from Riley's phone pulls her attention. She gets it out of her pocket once more, noticing a missed call and a voicemail.
She hesitates before pressing play, lifting the phone to her ear.
The deep, unfamiliar voice says, "Riley, you're smarter than this. Don't end up like your so called dad. There's a reason why none of your mom's so called survivor group or friends don't mention him anymore."
Riley jerks the phone away as if burned her hand. Ethan's notice from the corner of his eye. "You good?" He mouths.
Riley forces a nod, saying some weirdo tried to scare her more than she already was.
The auditorium quiets down as the principal steps up to the podium.
"Hello, everyone. Silence, please. Today is a tragic day for one of our fellow bears," she begins solemnly.
"Lily was a fellow bear who was brutally attacked and lost her life. The person responsible has not yet been found."
Sienna rolls her eyes and leans towards her friends, "Wow, police are really good at their job! I mean we're in school like nothing happened."
The principal continues, "The authorities and police are still working day and night to bring justice and find who killed Lily. In the meantime, I urge you and your families to lock your doors, avoid going out including partying and no other activities so we can find this sicko. School will be cancelled until further notice."
People who heard the last part, start to cheer as the group look unsure and confused on their reactions not having respect for their friend.
Sophie turns to the group, her face looks somewhat intrigued. "Do you think that means the whole week's off? I could totally use this time to have a self-reflection. And sell some stuff, and plus I just need a spa-day. R.I.P but thanks to that girl." She claps her hands together, with a smile before blowing a kiss to the air.
"You mean Lily, also disrespectful," Sienna says, her expression a little offended but just curious.
"Yeah, that's what I said," Sophie replies nonchalantly.
"No, you literally said that girl," Ethan corrects, his voice in a whisper almost.
"I didn't know, I was still in class." Sophie snaps back rolling her eyes dramatically.
Sienna shoots a glare and bewildered look at the others. "Why is she even here? She's not even really apart of the group. Who invited her?"
Luna shrugs, "No one knows, she just showed up one day and never left. I don't think she even knows our names."
Ethan than has an idea and taps Sophie's shoulder.
"Hey, Sophie, you know our names, right?"
"Of course I do!" Sophie says confidently. "You're Blake, Amber, Maya, and Sierra."
The group just stares in shock, not really shocked but still.
"At least she was close to mine, somehow." Sienna mutters.
Sophie shrugs, and as she turns around Sienna mikes choking her behind her back, earning a chuckle from everyone as Riley pulls her back as she sighs sarcastically.
A voice interrupts the moment, making all their heads snap. "Hey, guys, have you seen Lila?"
They turn to see Daniel, Lila's ex, standing awkwardly.
"She's at home, and she doesn't want to talk to you, dude," Ethan says, his tone sharp.
"I didn't ask that," Daniel snaps.
"I just want to know where she is."
"Well, she doesn't want to see you for a reason," Riley retorts.
"Nobody asked, Riley"
Luna then steps in, her tone calm but firm. "She's right. Lila doesn't want to see you anymore."
Daniel glares. "We know you're Riley's friend, not her girlfriend."
"Hey, a-hole!" Sienna says, standing up abruptly.
"Leave them alone, or l'll kick your balls left or right and you'll forget how to make kids."
"Oh, like I'm scared of-"
"SIT, BOTH OF YOU!" The principal yells at the two.
"Don't let him get to you guys. Boys are just insecure after they get dumped." Sophie comments.
"You'd know, right? Must've got some experience dumping guys with your good looks." Sienna says with a smile.
Sophie looks offended and turns back around.
Daniel, ignoring the convo, mutters, "I'll just text her later," and walks off as Riley glares at him.
"Glad she dumped him." Riley says.
"For real, I would have killed him by know if she was still dating him." Sienna says.
"Not the right timing, Sienna especially at a memorial assembly." Ethan whispers.
"Joking! Obv!" Sienna says raising her hands up.
The group than goes silent to show their respect and honor Lily, their heads bowed down.
