WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS (ANTHOLOGY 3 VERSION)

𝔤𝔢𝔬𝔯𝔤𝔢 𝔥𝔞𝔯𝔯𝔦𝔰𝔬𝔫

"Hyde?" I say softly, entering the basement.

"Hey, Princess." He looks up from his spot on the couch and furrows his eyebrows. "What's wrong?"

I tilt my chin higher, not wanting to show my uneasiness. "Nothing. I think we should talk."

He tosses his magazine onto the table and stands. "About what?"

"Us."

He swallows. "Us?"

"Yeah."

He obviously wants to remain cool, like me, so he nods and stuffs his hands into his front pockets. "Okay."

I know that this isn't going to be a pretty conversation, but it's definitely one that is necessary.

"What are we?"

He hesitates for a moment. A long moment. "I thought we agreed that this is a fling."

I bite my lip. "Just that?"

He stares at the wall behind me. "Princess, you know I'm not good with girlfriends and that kind of stuff."

"Yeah, but I..." The rest of the sentence comes out as a meek whisper, which I absolutely despise. "I thought that by now, you would genuinely care about me. At least a little more."

He looks back at me and I search for signs of emotion, but his eyes are covered by his shades.

"I do care about you."

My heart skips a beat. But only because that was not expected.

He sighs heavily. "Of course I care about you, you're my friend."

Normally, I would be happy that I'm not a stranger to him. Instead, a familiar pang of disappointment hits me.

I instinctively harden. "Friends don't know the way you taste, Steven."

His hand reaches for mine. "Princess-"

I sharply step back as the rest of the boys plus Donna enter the room with Jackie in tow.

"I totally won that!" Kelso exclaims. "And just because Donna 'distracts you' doesn't mean I can't make a shot."

"Whatever, man," Eric scoffs.

I wedge myself in between Kelso and Donna while Jackie bursts in. "You guys, I just got an advance copy of the yearbook, and you'll all be happy to know that 1977 is my cutest year ever!"

"Jackie, that is so weird because I was just telling the gang how there's no way you can be cuter than last year," Eric says sarcastically.

"You were?"

He blinks at her. "Yes."

"I for one," Kelso clears his throat, "totally believe that you are cuter this year."

She raises her eyebrows. "Yeah, since I dumped you."

"Nice burn," Donna chuckles.

"Donna, we've talked about that!" he hisses.

I avert my gaze as Jackie sits on the arm of the couch closest to Hyde. "Hey, Steven! Want to pop some popcorn and look at yearbook pictures of me?"

"No, I figure I'll do all of that when I die and go to hell," he says dryly.

"God, you're such a card!"

Don't kill her, don't kill her, don't kill her.

"This is so exciting," Fez beams. "My first American yearbook. Show us some pictures of Fez."

"Sorry, Fez, there aren't any."

"What the hell? So, they don't let foreigners in your yearbook?"

"Uh-huh. Here's me cheering at the pep rally last fall."

"Oh my god, two people in the crowd are mooning!" Hyde exclaims.

I peer over and my mood is almost instantly lifted.

"You're all cheerin' away, and the whole time, you're gettin' mooned! Yeah!"

"Oh my god, those are girl butts!" Eric giggles. "There's girl butt in the yearbook. Oh man, I can't tell who it is. I wish we had a magnifying glass."

Kelso immediately pulls one out of his pockets. "Here you go. I was- I was just... playing with some bugs."

"I can't believe it!" Jackie grumbles. "Someone's nasty butt is in my picture."

"Oh my god," Eric whispers. "That's not girl butt. That's Donna's butt!"

"Then whose is the other one?" Kelso asks urgently.

I purse my lips.

Hyde jumps. "Holy shit, that's Ana!"

Donna and I high-five each other and the guys glance at our asses, intrigued.

Eric sits down on the lawn chair in a daze.

"Eric, are you okay? You look weird," Donna grins.

"Yeah, could it be because of your girlfriend's naked butt?" Kelso guffaws. "Hyde, aren't you upset, too?"

"He isn't," I reply with a fake smile. "I'm just a fling."

Hyde's jaw clenches but he tries not to let his agitation be shown.

"Kelso, you're not helping," Donna warns, sensing the new tension.

"I'm not trying to help!"

She clicks her tongue and makes her way over to her boyfriend. "Eric, it's no big deal!"

"It is too, Donna!" Jackie scowls. "Your nasty butts ruined my picture!"

"Maybe your nasty face ruined our butt picture."

"I know why I'm not in the yearbook," Fez scorns.

"Hey, Fez," chortles Kelso. "Just look at Ana's naked butt some more."

"Yes, that's nice, thank you."

Eric snatches the book out of their hands. "Okay, take me through the chain of events. Now, you're at the pep rally- Oh, and, at this point, your pants are on."

"Right," Donna nods. "And then they weren't."

"Mooning isn't something you just... do."

"No," Hyde corrects. "It's not something you just do because it's impossible to moon when you have no ass."

Jackie rolls her eyes. "All of this talk about butts is annoying. Donna, Ana, let's go gossip."

We stand readily and follow her to the Formans' front steps. As usual, she begins speaking as soon as we sit.

"Michael is such a boy. He doesn't even know who he is. You know who knows who he is? Steven Hyde."

Donna casts a glance at me before grimacing. "Now you like Hyde?"

"No, I don't like him, I just think he's the sweetest, coolest guy I've ever met."

"I thought you hated him," I tell her honestly.

"Feelings change. Like, Donna, remember when we first met and I hated you?"

"What? What about Ana?" the redhead sneers.

"Well, she's rich."

"So you hated me because I'm not as wealthy as you two?"

"No! I hated you because I thought you were, like, this big goon. Didn't we have this talk?"

"No."

"I'm so sorry," she giggles.

"It's okay, I mean, I hated you, too."

"Yeah, that's because you're a big goon!"

"Bitch!"

"Goon!"

"Bitch!"

"Goon! See? We're closer than ever. I've got to go find Steven." She pats her knee and rushes off.

I laugh softly, playing with my ring.

"Spill," Donna says quietly.

"About Hyde and me?"

"Yeah. What happened between you two?"

"I talked to him. About what we were, like I said I would do."

"Oh." She shifts. "And what did he say?"

"He said that it was a fling."

"So he seriously hasn't developed any feelings for you since he met you? I find that hard to believe."

"I mean," I sigh. "He said he cared about me."

"See, that's good!"

"As a friend."

"Oh, crap. I should beat him up, that asshole. Leading you on? I mean, that's such a shitty thing to do!"

I smile softly. "Thanks, but I don't think that's what I need. I don't know what I was expecting, anyway."

Her forehead creases. "No, Ana, look at me. Don't put yourself down like that. You deserve more and he should be more careful about what he does. I don't really know the specifics of this whole situation, but I'm not going to sit here and watch you believe that you're some sort of slut."

I chuckle. "I'm glad I've got friends like you."

"I'm always here for you."

"Likewise. It's just that... Getting friendzoned hurts, man, and now Jackie likes him and it's..."

"I understand."

"Thank you so much, Donna. Really."

She hugs me tightly with a small grin. "Do you want me to buy you some flour?"

I sit on a table in The Hub while Leo hands Fez some cash.

"You lose again, cracker," Fez taunts, still upset over his lack of inclusion in the yearbook. "Why don't you go home and cry to your mama?"

"First of all, dude, I think I'm Chinese!" Leo counters. "And second of all, let me see you put your money where your mouth is!"

Kelso frowns at the bill he slaps on the foosball table. "I don't know, twenty bucks? I'm going to have to dip into my babysitting money. I mean- my... drag-racing money!" He tosses a twenty onto the table.

"Time to lose, little girls!" Fez jeers.

They start and Leo immediately gets a goal. "Score! Hey, I just remembered, man, I'm really good at this game!"

A boy from our school approaches me, one of the less popular juniors.

I smile warmly at him. "Hey, Jacob."

His jaw drops slightly. "You know my name?"

"Of course, we took Chem together." Although I'm not the same person I was when I first arrived in Point Place, I hold onto various tactics that my parents have taught me. I don't have any evil intentions, but they're still useful.

When a person thinks of themselves as inferior to me, I remember who they are and a few minor details about them. It sounds shallow, but recognition from a superior is very rewarding, and I want people to feel like they're worth something. Everyone is worth something.

"Well, I, uh," he stutters, "I heard about your, uh..."

"My ass in the yearbook?" I chuckle.

"Yeah," he says sheepishly. "Could you... sign it?"

I smirk. "Sure."

I take his pen and write in my elegant but simple signature.

"Thanks."

I kiss his cheek. "No problem."

He rushes back to his friends, but my expression drops when one of them stands up and yells, "Hey, everyone! Anastasia's signing her butt picture!"

I'm immediately bombarded with guys and girls alike, signing yearbooks left and right.

The crowd is finally broken up by none other than Steven Hyde. "Alright, alright, give her some space!" he yells, shooing everyone away before joining me on the table.

"Thanks," I say dryly.

"You're welcome. Fry?"

"Yeah." I take one from his basket.

We sit silently for a few moments until he cautiously speaks up. "You're not mad at me anymore?"

"How could I be?" I answer spitefully. "We're friends, after all."

He exhales heavily, frustration evident in his demeanor. "Ana, it was just sex."

Then, like a gust of harsh wind, it hits me. Why I feel so uncomfortable when Jackie hits on him. Why it hurts so much to hear those words.

I like him.

Genuinely.

I like Steven Hyde. And he doesn't like me back.

It's rejection, something that I'm not very familiar with. I'm used to getting what I want, and when I can't have him, I don't know how to deal with it. I put up my walls because I don't want people to see me in pain, and I ignore my emotions because I'm too weak to face the truth.

"Okay," I mutter. "Sorry for misinterpreting it."

He wraps an arm around me, but I don't lean into his touch as I normally would. "Princess, I'm sorry, I-"

"It's fine, Hyde. You don't have to throw me a pity party." He retracts his hand as I hop off of the table. "I'm going to go to Forman's. See you around."

"Hyde got arrested?" I hiss as the gang and I, minus Hyde, hang out in Eric's basement.

"For what?" Michael adds.

"For holding," Donna shrugs.

"Holding what?"

"For holding my heart," Jackie sighs, entranced. "Because I love him."

"What?" we chorus.

She holds her hands up as if she's surrendering. "It's true, okay? I love Steven Hyde, and someday, he'll love me. And he'll cut off those stupid sideburns and we'll live happily ever after."

Again, we stare at her incredulously. "What?"

"Jackie, you can't be serious," I scoff. "He hates you."

"Look, Anastasia, I know you like him, but you didn't make a move fast enough, and that means I'm allowed to step in."

"Wha- Where did you even- I-"

"I know. I've left you speechless."

I don't really know if I like how this ended but
