The next day, Bakugou had awoken to the sound of voices from the kitchen. His body mildly ached as he arose from the bed, shuffling sleepily towards the noise. As he neared, the voices grew louder, and Bakugou squinted to only see a blur of figures.
"Ah! Bakubro you're awake! Here, take this. We already packed your bag," He heard someone say then placed something heavy into his arms.
"I can't believe you actually agreed man!"
"THIS IS GONNA BE SO MUCH FUN!!"
Bakugou blinked just eyes open to see a large travel backpack with some clothes stacked neatly on top. He stared incredulously at the pack and wondered what to do with it.
"Bakugou! You should get a move on man. We've been waiting for you," Kirishima said, jerking his spiky hair towards the door. "Kami's getting pretty anxious and wants to get to the rainforest as soon as possible."
Bakugou gave him a hard look. "The rainforest? When the hell did I agree to that?"
"Last night," Kirishima stated matter-of-factly as he began to push Bakugou towards the bathroom. "While we were walking back home."
"EH!? I didn't hear that!"
"Oh, yes you did! You nodded and said, 'Whatever, do what you want...'."
"Like I would hear whatever you idiots were saying!"
Bakugou continued to complain as Kirishima pushed him down the hallway. But suddenly stopped when he noticed the daunting expression on the red head's face.
"Just..." Eijirou paused, "We'll be outside."
He looked tiredly at the blonde with brows was slightly scrunched up. Definitely annoyed, impatient almost, and Bakugou couldn't figure out why. Sure, he expected that Kirishima would be a little awkward after that incident a few days ago, but why was he being so fucking resentful?
The grip on his shoulder loosened, as he watched the red head walk away muttering something under his breath.
-
Making their way down the steps, the "Bakusquad" hastily stumbled towards their destination. Mina, Sero, Kirishima, and Bakugou followed Denki, who was directing them to...
"The Kowakat jungle?" Kiri asked, looking at the map that was hand drawn by Kaminari. The members stood side by side in front of the rainforest entrance, which was on the backside of the island. "Didn't we go here back in middle school?"
Denki nodded excitedly, a gleam in his eye. "Sure did!"
"Denks, hate to break it to ya but..." Mina began as she pointed at the eerie black void behind the vines that arched around the entrance. "It's been years since we've gone in here. Who knows what kind of stuff has changed? Plus, GAH-! BUGS!" She shrieked and swatted the air, spinning like a tornado.
"Yeah, and also how are you so sure the money you guys earned is enough?" Kirishima held up a pouch filled of the minuscule amount of money they earned from their minimum-wage job.
As the Bakusquad bickered about what to do, Bakugou, who was still half-asleep and gave zero fucks, pushed through and started walking.
"JEEZ... It's just a stupid forest. If you're gonna find that 'treasure' of yours, you might as well get a move on," He spat, now moving the vines draping over entrance. The rest of them exchanged quick but unsure glances.
"Well, what our leader says is what goes am I right!" Denki exclaimed.
Mina rolled her eyes. "I guess... but Sero's protecting me from the nasty bugs!" She grasped onto the tall boy's arm.
"You got it!" Sero flashed his iconic grin.
Kirishima watched Bakugou and the rest of his friends disappear through the vines. He gulped anxiously. What if something bad would happen to them today? Who knows what kind of animals could've sprouted in the years they were gone? If anything happened to his friends or Bakugou, he wouldn't ever forgive himself. With a final deep breath, he followed behind.
Upon entering, they were hit with the pungent smell of vegetation and damp moss. With each breath, one's own body relaxed deeper into the floral aroma. The air was humid and somewhat sticky. Up above little amounts of sunlight peeked through the canopy of leaves, only a few hitting the forest's floor. As far as the eye could see were large tree trunks, which dominated the whole entire ground. They could hear the buzz of insects, which made Ashido jump onto Sero's head.
The Bakusquad were almost blinded by the overwhelming amount of green surrounding them. Bakugou reached out to feel the rough bark of a trunk as he passed by. This jungle felt different from the rest of the island. To the blonde, it felt exotic and colorful, vibrant and eye-catching. He took his camera out to take silent photos, not daring to stir any animals nor other beings.
"Woah..."
"This is..."
"Amazing..." Kirishima and Bakugou whispered in unison.
After walking for a while, they stopped for a break. Sitting side by side on a fallen log, Denki started dishing out snacks for everyone to eat.
"Here everyone!" He said as he passed out sloppily made tuna sandwiches.
"What the hell are you feeding us?" Bakugou held up his in disgust.
"A masterpiece made from this smart ass!"
"So shit?"
"OH THAT'S JUST MEAN!"
Just as Bakugou was about to shove the sandwich down Pikachu's throat, the bush in front of them rustled. The group froze (Ashido already backing away). They stayed hushed, Denki, Sero, Kirishima, even grabbing sticks to protect themselves. Bakugou however sat there eating his sandwich unfazed.
"Don't worry everyone," Denki puffed out his chest and pushed out his chin. "I-I'll protect you!"
The bush only rustled more and more when all of a sudden, it stopped. The bush was still. Their palms were sweaty as the silence in the air hung, ringing louder and louder.
"Meow..."
A tiny, grey paw stuck out from the green.
"It's a..."
"Cute ass cat," Bakugou finished with a smug expression. "Man, I didn't you guys could get any more dumber." He knelt down to pet the cat, even feeding it a small piece of bread. He smiled at the feline, whispering some sweet coos whilst letting it nibble on his sandwich. The Bakusquad was mortified at the sight.
"Flow! Flowers! Daddy has banana bread!" A voice called out in the distance.
The cat's ears perked foward, now alarmed. It moved away from Bakugou's hand and started scampering off towards a nearing silhouette. Katsuki squinted his eyes and saw a familiar tuff of purple hair approaching.
"Shinsou!" Denki exclaimed, bolting out of his frozen state to run up to him.
"Daddy?" Mina smirked.
"Denki," Shinsou acknowledged him with wide eyes. " Ashido, Sero, Kirishima, and..."
"Lord Explosion Murder," the blonde answered.
"Ahaha.. it's actually Bakugou," Kirishima chuckled.
Shinsou's brow quirked at the name. "Oh right. You were the one in that fight yesterday correct?"
"So what if I was?" Bakugou gritted his teeth.
"Whoa there bud, don't go all feral on me."
"You asking for a fight, Eyebags?"
"Bring it on Barbie."
"Whoa, whoa, whoa, calm your tits ladies," Mina stepped in between them as Denki as Kirishima held each boy back. "Especially you, Bakuboob."
"AGHAAHHAHA!" Kami let out a strangled laugh in an attept to break the unnerving tension. "Shinsou, we are heading toward the temple of the monkeys to get some treasure! Please come with us! Pretty please!"
Eyebags looked from the little blonde in front of him, to the bitchy blonde, and back to the little blonde. He out an exhausted groan, though obliged.
"Well! We should get a move on, right guys?" Denki said.
"Alrighty Denks!" Mina agreed, the chill from her bones slowly melting away. "Let's go snatch these monkey's weaves."
After leaving Flower on the log to rest, they made their way up a dirt path; Weedy Long Legs, Pinky, and Pikachu fighting over who'll hold the map. Meanwhile, Kirishima was surprisingly talking to Shinsou, out of all people.
"So, how's the ice cream cart? You selling a lot?" the red head asked the tired boy.
Shinsou looked at him quizzically, unsure of why he was talking to him so much. "Ah, why don't you talk to blondie over there? Aren't you living together?"
Kirishima blushed and chuckled nervously. His lips made a thin line as he sneaked a glance back at the blonde, who was tagging behind lazily. He said in a hushed voice, "I'm just sort of... been awkward around him recently. It's just that yesterday in that fight, I got envious of him. I'm glad he's not injured badly but... It's complicated and I don't want to go to in-depth but I just feel weak and unworthy when I'm with him. It's just ahhh!"
Kiri buried his face in his hands and groaned. Shinsou sighed and awkwardly scratched his neck, looking back at the blonde. "I think you should go talk to him about it..."
"What, are you crazy!? He'll beat my ass, you know what happened yesterday."
"You still want to be his friend right?"
Kirishima lingered his gaze on the blonde, but when their eyes met, he turned away than Iida the hedgehog. He nodded sheepishly.
"Communication is key to any relationship, whether platonic or romantic. I would know," Shinsou said as he met eyes with Denki, the blonde giving him a happy grin in which he returned with his own smug smile.
"I see," Kirishima thought for a moment, "Thanks for your help Shinsou! You're a pretty great guy!"
He proceeded to wrap his arm around the boy in a hug with a laugh. Meanwhile, Bakugou had been staring at the two. He was too far away and was overwhelmed by the annoying blabber in the front to hear what they were saying. Katsuki was taught to never butt into anyone's business that wasn't his own. He knew Kirishima could talk to anyone he wanted to since he didn't control him. However, what bothered the blonde was that bright smile Shitty Hair gave Eyebags, not to mention the close skin ship. For the past few hours, all the redhead would give him were cold stares and short greetings. Why does this purple haired skunk have the privilege and not him?
To get his mind of Kiri, Bakugou tuned into the group who was now cheering and jumping around. He had been so occupied with his thoughts that he didn't even realize they had arrived at the temple. Standing high, pillars lined the entrance with monkeys statues stationed on each side. It looked to be made of an unual faded yellow color of cracked stone and marble. Bakugou's traces over the banana shapes engraved into the bricks of the monkey palace.
"Do you think..." Sero gulped. "Do you think there might be warrior monkeys?"
"No Sero."
"What if they have little banana spears and yellow face paint and go OOH OOH AHH AH-"
"Let's go inside."
Just as the group finished entering, there was a rumble shaking the floor. There emerged a stone rising up at the entrance, sealing it, and preventing no way of turning back.
"What the?" Bakugou jumped back in the darkness. "What the hell is going on?"
Suddenly, there was a voice.
"HEYYYYYYYYYYY PARTTTY PEEEOOPPLEE!"
The booming sound echoed through the seemingly hollow hallway, it's voice ringing in their ears.
"SOOOO! HAVE YOU BRAVE TRAVELERS BEEN LOOKING FOR... OUR TREASURE?"
"Y-Yes! We have!" Denki shouted back. "A-And we've got some money this time!"
"WELL THEN, WE'LL HAVE TO SEE IT FOR OURSELVES! FOLLOW THE CARPET!"
After he spoke, torches were flickered open which lit up the dark atmosphere. Bakugou could now see the utter dread coursing through his friend's veins. Did this temple traumatize them that bad? He wondered and also noticed Shinsou thinking the same thing as him. With hesitant footsteps, the friends walked down the carpet, following the fiery orange flames as their guide.
"Shitty Hair," Bakugou whispered, nudging the red head's arm, who tensed up at the touch. "What is at the end of the carpet?"
Kirishima's eyes were locked on the ground as he shook his head. "A fucking monster."
"Eh?"
"He's right," Mina agreed. "A monster who tortures people for bananas and treasure."
"Not to mention that monster mugged us!"
Kaminari clutched the small pouch in his hands and shuddered. He looked Bakugou directly in his eye. "Look bro, if we're gonna make it out of here, we've got to stay strong. That monkey and his parrot sidekick of his is something else."
"You couldn't even beat a monkey and a parrot? Psh, no wonder you had to have me fight those assholes earlier," Bakugou scoffed. "This is bullshit."
"Sorry Denki, but I have to agree with Princess Boom Boom over here," Shinsou scratched his neck. "I mean, what could a bunch of animals make you d-"
"Shh. Shut up you guys. We're here," Sero hissed, signaling everyone to settle down. They had reached the end of the carpet where they faced a red velvet curtain.
They heard a squeak and in humane muttering. Then there was the freakishly loud voice again.
"SO HAVE YOU HAVE ARRIVED HEYYY!"
"Yes we have..." Denki said in barely a whisper.
"GREAT!! PLEASE PULL BACK THE CURTAIN SO WE CAN SEE YOUR LOVELY FACESSS!"
"Right! Um... Mina you do it."
"What!? No way! Sero here!"
"HELL NO GET OFF OF ME!"
SWOOSH
Tired of their antics, Bakugou pulled back the curtain to find out in fact. His friends were right. In front of his was a monkey wearing an elegant crown decorated with crystals. To his side was a unique looking yellow parrot whose feathers styled up in the shape of a banana. How weirder could this day get?
"HELLO THERE!" The parrot greeted them with a loud squawk. "THE NAME'S PRESENT MIC JR. AND THIS IS OUR CHEIF MOMEKY, NEZU!"
"OOH AHH AHH!" The monkey chirped.
"I'M CHIEF NEZU'S RIGHT HAND MAN! WHATEVER I SAY IS HIS WORD!" Present Mic Jr. said, tilting his head towards the cheif. "NOW YOU SAID YOU HAVE TREAUSRE? GIVE IT HERE!"
The yellow head hurried to place it in front of the tiny monkey chief. It's small hands fumbled with the pouch and emptied out it's coins. He examined it for a while, before whispering something to Present Mic Jr.
The monkey chippered to the parrot who bopped his head (nodding). He turned back to the Bakusquad, who was now slowly backing away, sure they were about to get their asses whooped.
"WOOOOOWWWEEEE HERE WE HAVE LADIES AND GENTLEMEN THE FIRST EVER HUMANS TO RECIEVE OUR PRIZE!! GRANTED TO US BY OUR GOD PRESENT MIC!"
Nani.
Shockingly they all looked back at the parrot and chief monkey, who was now rummaging in the back to grab something.
"We had enough money?" Kirishima's mouth gaped open.
Mina nodded with a weak shrug. "I... guess we did..."
"It wasn't even that much..." Sero stared at the floor bug eyed.
Unlike the others, Denki was rejoicing and even jumping on Shinsou. Bakugou had noticed them holding hands earlier when they were walking down the carpet but decided not to mention it. He barely cared about them, but questioned if the others knew about what they had going on. Sometimes a basic blonde bitch needs to get the tea.
Chief Nezu emerged from behind his throne, pushing a large, wooden chest with the latge seal of a banana on the front. He chattered something then ended it with a cheeky smile before sitting back onto his throne. All eyes turned to the parrot who was randomly humming 'happy birthday'.
"CONGRATULATIONS FOR OBTAINING THE ULTIMATE TREASURE!! YOU WILL GROW HELATHY AND RUCH AND LIVE ON FOR ENTERNITY!" Present Mic Jr. squawked.
-
"That was..." Shinsou began, "unexpectedly easy."
"Yeah, that wasn't as bad as you idiots said it be," Bakugou said as they started walking back from the temple.
"Oh, I we were only reminiscing on the time we got stuffed with bananas until we threw up, mugged, almost went deaf by Present Mic Jr, and strangled," Mina sighed as she merrily twirled the treasure chest in the air with Denki. "Fun times."
They came to a stop at the log they had seen not long ago and Flower was perched on the bark nibbling some banana bread. Her ears perked up as she scampered towards the group. Flower jumped into Shinsou's open arms and snuggled in (making Bakugou slightly, no, FUMING with jealousy).
Denki clapped his hands together and grinned. "Well everyone, this is it. The time we've all been waiting for. Lady and Mans, we will now open the box!"
Kaminari pulled out the key from his pocket and held it up, letting the group observe it for one final time. Once they all looked at each other with affirming nods, with shaky hands Denki slipped the the key into the hole and turned it.
