XVIII. No More Lies
The small airport was deserted once they had finally arrived, with most of the people likely at the festival taking place just a few miles up the road. Due to Alice's excellent persuasion skills, they were able to procure first class tickets back to Seattle later that night; unfortunately, that meant that they had a few hours to kill before it was time to go home. And that meant that Evelyn had more time to be alone with her thoughts.
The group had settled into a quiet corner of the terminal, just next to their gate. Bella, Edward, Alice, and Jasper sat in the cramped airport seats, while Evelyn sat a small distance away in the corner where the wall and massive floor-to-ceiling windows connected. The salad and sandwich that Alice had found for her sat untouched by her side as her she stared glassy-eyed out into the twilight.
More than anything, Jasper wanted to be with her; to hold her tightly until the pain from today went away for good. But he also knew that she was still angry with him. He could feel the storm of emotions inside of her as she sat uncharacteristically still in the dark corner of the terminal. It pained him more than anything, but for now, he knew that she needed time to be alone and process the day before they could talk about anything else.
Evelyn was replaying Aro's words in her mind over and over; all she could see was the guilt on Will's face as Aro revealed his true role in the deaths of her parents. She had been silently crying since they had arrived back at the airport, but it seemed that her body had finally run out of the energy to even do that. She felt as if she was empty and like she could burst from the overhwhelming sadness inside of her at the same time.
Her body ached from the pain that Jane had all too willingly inflicted upon her earlier that day, her muscles screaming in silent protest everytime she shifted her body. She had needed Jasper's help to walk through the airport and was embarrassed to admit that he had been the one to lower her down to the ground where she now sat. Unfortunately, she would probably need the help of one of the vampires she was with to make it onto the plane and back to Forks without collapsing.
A sudden movement caught her eye, and she looked over to see Edward gently shifting a sleeping Bella onto Alice's shoulder so that he could stand. Once he had made sure that Bella would not wake, he made his way over to her slowly, and she knew he was giving her the chance to tell him to leave. She offered him a soft smile through her silent tears.
It's okay, she thought, not having the energy or words to speak after the events of the day, and he nodded as he sat down beside her. Though he was ice cold, it was nice to have someone familiar to be close to when she felt so unbelievably alone.
They sat in silence for a few moments, Edward reliving the day through her sad eyes and the storm of thoughts replaying inside her head. His heart broke for the girl beside him; she had been through so much pain and suffering in her short life, and to have so much brought up today must be too much for her to bear.
He grimaced when he saw the Volutri through her mind's eye. "The way that Aro told you what happened to your parents was unbelievably cruel. I'm sorry that you had to hear it like that."
At least it was the truth, Evelyn thought bitterly, and Edward could sense her hatred of Will bubbling up to the surface as she angrily pictured his face. She looked at him with tired eyes. I wouldn't have known otherwise.
Edward sighed, considering his next words carefully. "He wanted me to tell you a couple of things," he said finally, studying her face. He knew that she wouldn't like hearing this; truthfully, he didn't want to do any favors for the vampire who had betrayed her trust, either, but he had been able to see into his mind. He knew that much of what Will had done was against his moral compass and that he hadn't wanted to do it. But still, he had done it.
Evelyn narrowed her eyes, shifting and wincing at the pain that followed from her aching muscles. I don't care about anything he has to say.
"I understand that," Edward reassured. "But he wanted you to know that he had to do everything the Volturi told him to protect someone that he loved. He didn't want to kill them. And he didn't," Edward added, answering the silent question in her eyes. "He tried to go back and save them, but the others got to them first.
"He did it because the Volutri have someone he loves, I think her name is Rebecca." Edward continued. "They told him that if he served them, they would release her. But I saw into Aro's mind... they've already killed her. He doesn't know."
That doesn't excuse the fact that he lied to me for months, Edward. He got close to me knowing that he was the one who led the Volturi to my parents. Evelyn could feel her eyes stinging with tears once more as she pictured his face in her mind. She had thought him to be someone she could trust completely, and all of that was shattered in a matter of seconds in Volterra.
"He wanted me to tell you that he loves you," Edward said quietly, knowing Jasper was listening to every word of their conversation from across the gate. He could hear the incoherency of his thoughts, but mostly he saw that the blonde vampire was more concerned with what Evelyn could possibly be thinking at this moment. He made a mental note to ease Jasper's fears once they got home.
You don't lie to someone like this and call it love. Evelyn looked at him, green eyes deep and clear as a few stray tears fell onto her cheeks. I never want to see him again. Or any of the Volturi... but we will, won't we?
Edward sighed, defeated. "The Volturi don't forget things easily, especially Aro. They will expect us to keep our word about you two." His eyes flickered to Bella, who was still sound asleep. "After what you saw in his head... Aro won't let that go so easily."
Was it really that dangerous? Evelyn's stomach felt sick thinking about having to face the ancient vampire again. She didn't want to be a vampire... she had never wanted to be a vampire. But now it was looking like she wouldn't have much choice in the matter if she wanted to protect herself and her family.
"Only Caius and Aro know besides us. Marcus has no idea, and Aro uses Chelsea and Corin, two other vampires with gifts over the mind and relationships, to keep Marcus complacent. If he were to find out, it would ruin the empire he's built."
So we have no choice. They'll come for us.
Edward nodded solemnly. "One day, yes. But Alice will be watching their decisions. It's very likely that they won't even bother checking in for another couple of decades, if we stay under their radar. You can both stay human."
Bella won't be too happy to hear that. Evelyn smiled softly when she saw Edward's lips twitch up just slightly at the corner. So... does this mean that you're planning on coming back? Her eyes flickered to Jasper for a brief moment, who had his back to them but she knew him well enough to know that he was listening.
Edward sighed, raking a frustrated hand through his hair. "Bella is nothing if not determined, I suppose. But yes, I couldn't leave her again." He paused, his dark golden eyes pouring into hers. "He couldn't leave you again, either, just so you know."
Evelyn closed her eyes, shaking her head. But he still left me. I didn't forget that. Her eyes were beginning to feel heavy; she could feel the exhaustion creeping up on her again as she tried to open her eyes again but failed.
Edward noticed this as well, and he took her hand and squeezed it gently before getting up. "Rest, you need it. We can all talk when we get back to Forks."
All Evelyn could do was nod before she felt the gentle fingers of sleep tugging at her mind, and within minutes she had drifted off into the peaceful darkness of unconsciousness.
***
When they arrived at the Port Angeles airport, Carlisle was already waiting there to drive them home. The flight home had gone by so much quicker than the flight to Italy, considering there was no rush to save anyone and Evelyn was the most exhausted she had ever been in her entire life.
Embarrassingly, she had still been too weak to walk on her own after Jane's attack on her body so she had begrudgingly let Jasper practically carry her through the gate and onto the plane. She had ended up between him and Alice while Edward and Bella spoke quietly in the row behind them, but she had been too tired to care too much about the fact that Jasper was so close to her. She had immediately fallen asleep and felt significantly better when they landed in Washington. Jasper, ever concerned, still lingered at her side while they deplaned and walked slowly out to where Carlisle was waiting with his and Edward's car.
They had agreed to meet at the Cullen house before going back to their respective homes, and Evelyn was grateful that she wouldn't have to face Marie just yet. She dreaded plugging in her phone to see all of the missed calls and messages that she knew would be waiting for her. Guilt settled like a stone in her stomach, but she knew that she would do it all again if it meant that Edward would still be alive now.
Jasper and Alice went with Carlisle to go and take care of some logistical things before they could all come back to the house. The last thing that Jasper had wanted to do was leave Evelyn, but Edward had told him that she needed some time to process everything that had happened to her in Italy. He didn't want to admit it, but Jasper knew Edward was right. He felt so odd around her now; it was a constant battle of wanting to be close to her but also feeling like he should stay as far away as possible because of what he'd done. The worst part was that he could feel the emotional damage that he had caused within her; she had tried hard to bury it deep inside her, but he knew it was there. It took his breath away when he saw her that night at her house for the first time in months.
Evelyn winced as she slid into the backseat of Edward's Volvo while he and Bella took the front seats. Before long, they were speeding down the highway towards Forks where she would once again be face to face with all of the Cullens. She wasn't sure if she was ready to see all of them together. She had finally gotten used to the idea that she would never see any of them again, and now they were all back and here to stay like nothing had happened.
Edward, like usual, drove significantly faster than the posted speed limit down the dim highways and they made it to the large Cullen house within an hour. The sight of the warm lights on inside the glass home and the various cars in the driveway sent on odd feeling through Evelyn as Edward pulled up to the front steps. She barely had time to blink before her door was open, with Edward gently pulling her out of the car as she fought the aching protest of her muscles.
Bella was on her other side as Edward helped Evelyn up the stairs and into the house. Carlisle was there waiting for them.
"I think you should take a look at her," Edward said, his marble arm wrapped tightly around her waist. "Jane didn't show any mercy."
Understanding dawned in Carlisle's gold eyes as they flitted over the exhausted girl in front of him. "Aro doesn't keep her there to show mercy. Take her to my office." His eyes shifted to Bella, offering her a kind smile. "Esme and Alice are in the living room. I'm sure my wife would love to see that you're well, Bella."
The brunette frowned, looking between Carlisle and Evelyn, who was sagging tiredly against Edward's side. "Is she going to be okay? I don't want to leave her if she needs me."
Evelyn mustered up the strength to smile and straighten up as much as she could, ignoring the pain in her muscles as she did so. "I'll be fine, Bells. Carlisle will patch me up. Don't even worry about it."
Bella looked unconvinced, but nonetheless she nodded. Her gaze met Edward's. "You're not going to leave again, are you?"
Edward smiled, his eyes softening as he drank in the sight of her. "I'll just be right upstairs. I'll be back down to take you home as soon as I can."
"Okay," Bella nodded, not quite looking convinced, but she turned and padded down the snow white carpet towards the living room. Evelyn watched her walk away, knowing that worry was likely eating away at her because she was afraid Edward would leave again. She shook her head slightly, turning to Carlisle, who was waiting halfway up the stairs.
He smiled at her. "This shouldn't take long, Evelyn. I'll make sure everything is alright and then I'll give you some medication to help with the pain."
She nodded, instantly at ease from the sound of his voice. Edward's grip on her waist tightened as he turned them towards the steps. "Can you walk?" He asked softly, looking between her uncertain face and her legs, which he could tell were wobbly and unstable beneath her.
"Um--" But before she could even respond, Edward had swept her up into his arms and within seconds she found herself in Carlisle's office, breathless from the speed of the vampire who held her. Carlisle strolled in casually behind them, shutting the door softly before walking over to his desk. She looked at Edward with grateful eyes. Thank you.
Edward grinned, setting her down gently on one of the leather arm chairs near Carlisle's desk. "I could see the fear of walking up the stairs all over your face, Ev. It's no problem." He turned to Carlisle, his face darkening as his eyes turned to stone. "Carlisle, there's something we need to discuss with you about what happened in Italy. About Evelyn," he added, his eyes flickering to hers briefly.
The blond vampire sighed as he withdrew a stethoscope and penlight from his desk, making his way over to the tired girl sitting in the chair. "I assumed that there would be something. There always is with Aro. May I?" He asked, gesturing to her wrist. Evelyn nodded, watching him as he used his cold fingers to find her radial pulse. His kind eyes met hers. "I'm sorry that you had to meet Jane. I'm sure you can see why the Volturi hold her in such high regard."
"I can't say it was my favorite part of the trip," Evelyn joked, her voice hoarse and weak. "Do they all have gifts like that?"
"Aro is somewhat of a collector of talents," Edward explained, perching on the armchair beside her. "He seeks out what he considers to be prizes to be pieces in his collection. He wants people with abilities like no one that he has seen. Alec and Jane for example, have offensive gifts that he can use for whatever he wishes."
Evelyn frowned, shifting slightly as Carlisle checked her blood pressure. "But why do they stay? They serve him without question. It just doesn't seem in a vampire's nature to do that. He gives them nothing in return."
"Aro has people for that, too," Carlisle said from beside her. "Chelsea and Corin. Chelsea has the power to break and build emotional ties between people, excluding mates. Corin has the ability to make people feel content with their situation. Together, Aro uses them to keep the coven under his control. They don't even realize that they're being influenced."
Evelyn's eyes had found the painting of the Volturi and Carlisle hanging on the wall. The mere sight of it gave her goosebumps. She thought of the vision that she had had of Aro and his sister. "I saw something when I was there... when Aro touched my hand." She looked at Edward then, halfway checking to make sure that she had not imagined it. At the grim look in his eyes, she knew that it had been real. "It was like I was pulled into his mind... well, into his memories, when he touched me."
Carlisle's golden eyes met hers, his concern evident. "What did you see?"
She swallowed hard as the memories flashed through her head. She could still hear the sound of Didyme's head being ripped from her body echoing through her mind. "I saw him and Caius kill his sister, Didyme. It looked like it happened long ago. I don't think Marcus knows."
"Aro knew what she saw, and he knew that in turn I saw what went through her head. He's wary because the secret is now outside of just him and Caius," Edward interjected. "He never thought anyone would ever find out."
The blond vampire's eyes were clouded as he looked between them. "Honestly, I'm surprised that he let you leave. He was never one to take chances, especially when it came to protecting his standing in the coven. He's afraid to lose his power."
Edward nodded. "I was surprised, too. But he wants her. And Bella, and me and Alice. Bella was immune to his and Jane's powers, and now he knows about me and Alice." His eyes were pained as he looked at Evelyn. "He made us promise that we would change them. He's determined, Carlisle. I've never seen somebody so sure of something before."
"Will they come for us?" Evelyn asked, voice high with worry. "I don't want to be changed, Carlisle. There has to be a way that we can avoid it, right?"
Carlisle shook his head. "The Volturi are not known to go back on their word. But we don't know exactly when they will come. Most likely, it will be in a decade or two, so there is time to find another way." He moved to a cabinet behind his desk, pulling out two vials of clear medication. "I know it's difficult, but try to put it out of your mind for now."
Evelyn nodded, biting her lip as she debated on what to say next. "Carlisle, I wanted to ask you about something." She fought back tears as she pictured his face. "Do you know someone named Will Cameron?"
The Cullen patriarch froze for a moment, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion. "William? Was he there in Volterra? How do you know him?"
Evelyn swallowed hard. "I met him here, in Forks. He said that he was a friend of yours. I thought he was my friend... but--"
Her voice broke, and she closed her lips tightly to choke back the sob that was crawling its way up her throat.
"He betrayed her," Edward finished, staring at the girl before him with somber eyes. "He had been with the Volturi the whole time. Her parents were killed because they knew something about our kind. He led the Volturi to them and had them murdered."
Carlisle's eyes widened in shock. "I thought that William had left them long ago?"
Edward's eyes were hard as he stared at his adoptive father. "He lied."
"I see," Carlisle said, silently asking Edward to explain the situation to him in full once Evelyn and Bella were asleep. He knelt down in front of the human girl, gently wiping the few stray tears that had fallen onto her cheeks.
"I'm sorry for what you've been through, Evelyn. It is more than one person should ever have to face by themselves." She let out a humorless laugh then, making Carlisle smile. "But now it's time for you to rest. It's what your mind and body need to start healing."
"But what about Marie? I should call her, she doesn't know I'm here--"
"There will be time for that in the morning," Carlisle assured, turning back to his desk and drawing up two syringes, one from each vial. "One of these is for the pain and one is a mild sedative to help you rest. You're not afraid of needles, are you?" Carlisle asked, a teasing smile on his face as he rolled her sleeve up.
Evelyn smiled softly, shaking her head. "No, I'm not." She met his eyes as he injected the medication into her arm, wincing slightly at the pain. "Thank you, Carlisle. For taking care of me."
He smiled, a light chuckle falling from his lips. "No need to thank me, Evelyn. You're practically family." He turned to Edward. "You can take her to Esme and I's bedroom. She'll be able to rest there without anyone coming in."
Evelyn saw Edward nod, but she could already feel the effects of the medicine taking over her body. Her eyelids felt heavy, and she felt her head droop to the side as she struggled to stay awake.
"Don't fight it Ev," Edward chided, his voice soft as he gently lifted her from the chair. "You need to rest."
"Don't tell me what to to," Evelyn mumbled softly, and she smiled when she felt the deep rumble of his laugh against her cheek, which rested on his chest.
She strained to hear his response, but the medication had already pulled her into the peaceful blackness of sleep before she could make sense of what he had said.
***
The sky was gray and cloudy the next morning. Evelyn sat at the Cullens' kitchen island, lost in thought as she quietly ate the scrambled eggs and toast on her plate. Esme was humming softly to herself as she washed the dishes, and Evelyn could hear the tv on in the next room. She doubted anyone was actually watching it; the Cullens had never really found it interesting.
Edward had gone to take Bella home, while Alice and Emmett had left to go hunting before she woke up from her drug-induced sleep. Rosalie had briefly walked into the kitchen this morning, and Evelyn had immediately sensed a deep tension between her and Edward. She didn't bother asking about it, instead watching Rose as she disappeared into the large garage to be alone, likely working on one of her many cars. Jasper was nowhere to be found. Evelyn couldn't decide if she was worried or relieved at that news.
She was pulled from her thoughts when she noticed Edward stride into the kitchen. His golden eyes met hers knowingly. It was time to go home and finally face the wrath of Marie Masen.
"Are you ready?" Edward asked, the side of his mouth twitchig up into a smirk.
Evelyn sighed, pushing herself up out of her chair as Esme took her plate. "Let's get this over-with, shall we?" She turned to Esme, offering her a grateful smile. "Thank you for breakfast, Esme. It was delicious."
Esme winked at her. "Good luck, Ev. I'll say a prayer for you."
"I'll need it," Evelyn laughed, grabbing her bag from the chair beside her and walking towards Edward. Her body still ached, but after the medicine Carlisle had given her and the long night of sleep she felt much better than she had the day prior.
Edward took her bag from her when she reached him, and she followed the vampire through the house as they made their way to the front door. She was mentally going through each and every possible scenario of what Marie would say as they walked out into the brisk March air when Edward suddenly stopped walking. Not paying attention, Evelyn bumped into his back and stumbled back a step. She frowned, but then her gaze travelled to where Edward's was and she saw Jasper standing at the foot of the front steps. Her eyes flickered down to his hands, where he was clutching a worn leather journal in his icy fingers.
Her heart dropped to her stomach. It was her journal.
Jasper's golden eyes never left hers as he spoke. "Do you mind if I have a word with Evelyn before you go?" Her heart ached at the pain in his voice. She knew that he had read everything.
Edward looked uncertainly between his brother and the human girl he considered his sister. With a deep breath, Evelyn offered him a reassuring smile. "It's okay. I'll meet you when we're done."
He nodded once, searching her eyes. "I'll go and get the car."
Jasper and Evelyn both watched him disappear back into the house. Evelyn had her arms crossed tightly against her chest, her nails digging deep into her palms to keep her hands from shaking. She chewed her lip as she turned to finally face the man who had been her first love after all of these months apart.
Neither of them knew where to begin. Evelyn looked at the journal in his hands, the memories of the past months flooding back as she thought of everything she had written within its pages.
"I never actually thought you would ever read that," she said quietly, searching his face. "I had forgotten that I'd left it here."
Jasper laughed, a humorless bark that echoed the pain he felt inside of him. "In a way I wish that you hadn't. But I did read it. Every word."
He sighed, pained eyes meeting hers. "Evelyn, there are many things that I regret in my life... and I know that you know that more than anyone. But none of them even compare to the regret I feel for making you think that I never loved you."
Evelyn frowned, shaking her head vigorously. "But— but you told me you never loved me. That I wasn't good enough for you. You looked into my eyes and tore my heart to pieces like it was nothing."
Jasper stepped forward, clutching the journal tightly in his hands. "I lied, Evelyn. I had to break your heart that way because I knew it was the only way you would let me go. But I never thought that you would believe me so easily." He held up her journal. "I made you think you were nothing, when all you've ever been is my everything from the moment that I laid my eyes on you."
Evelyn felt tears stinging her eyes now. He was saying everything that agar had wanted to hear for so long. But it seemed to only break her heart even more. "But why, Jasper? I loved you! I still love you, and I would have stood by you through anything because that's what you do when you love someone!"
"Because I was afraid of hurting you! I thought that leaving was the best way to keep you safe." Jasper's piercing eyes poured into hers as he spoke. "Edward thought that if we all stayed, the both of you would end up dead because of us. He thought that leaving would be the best thing for everyone, and I went along with it because I was terrified of myself after that night."
Evelyn froze, shaking her head in disbelief. "Wait, so you're telling me that you ended everything we had because Edward told you to instead of just talking to me? You're joking." Her voice was bitter, filled with venom.
"Evelyn, please try to understand. I wasn't myself, I couldn't even think straight because I was so afraid--"
"No, Jasper, there's something that you need to understand," Evelyn said, cutting him off and taking a step towards him. "I would have been there for you without any judgement if you would have just talked to me. You don't get to just make decisions for me, for us, like that. It's just like I told you before... relationships take two people. You can't control everything that happens."
"I know, Evelyn, I know. Trust me, I've spent the past six months reliving the day that I left over and over and over. I made a mistake, the biggest mistake of my life, and I broke every promise I ever made you." He took her hand in his, and she fought the urge to shake it away. "I'll spend the rest of my existence trying to make it up to you. Please, tell me what I need to do." He was practically begging at this point, his voice painfully broken as he stared into her sharp green eyes.
Evelyn shook her head, removing her hand from his. "I just don't know, okay? I think I just need some time to think about everything." She offered him a thin smile. "Like I said, I still truly love you, and I think part of me always will, but things just aren't what they used to be. And I don't know that I can get back there."
Jasper's face was the picture of a broken man standing before her. "So you're decided, then? It's over completely? There's nothing I can do?"
"I don't know," Evelyn said honestly, her green eyes clouded. "You read what happened after you left. You broke me, and I had to find a way to fix myself. I... I don't think that I would say never, but I just don't trust you anymore, Jasper."
Her words hung poignantly between them, the silence around them deafening. Jasper finally nodded, his eyes never leaving hers. "I understand," he said, though inside he felt like he was gasping for air. He knew that he deserved evrything he got, but it did not make it easier to bear the pain of losing her all over again.
Just then, Edward came driving up beside them in his Volvo. Evelyn sighed, gently pausing to clasp his shoulder as she passed him. "I'm sorry," she breathed, and she truly meant it. Jasper said nothing, only watching her climb into the passenger seat beside his brother as his heart seemed to be breaking all over again.
He stood in front of the house as they drove away, and he stayed there long after they had disappeared into the trees.
***
Edward and Evelyn drove to Marie's house in silence. Evelyn was seething; she had not known that leaving had been his idea all along, and she was so angry. Why hadn't he had the decency to just talk to her? Why did he feel like leaving would solve all of their problems?
Of course, Edward was listening to the storm of thoughts inside her head the whole drive. Even he could admit that her anger was justified; he had not realized how far this whole situation would go just because of one decision. It seemed that things were much worse now than when he had left in the first place.
Edward pulled over off of the road about a block from Marie's house and turned the car off. The pair sat in silence, Edward readying himself to listen and Evelyn searching for the right words to convey how hurt she truly was.
Finally, she looked at him. "I have something to say to you. And you don't get to talk until I'm done."
The vampire nodded. "I understand."
She sighed loudly, digging her nails into her palms. "You had no right to take Jasper away from me like that. You knew he was not in a good headspace and yet you still convinced him and your whole family to go along with your idiotic idea. You destroyed Bella emotionally and made us fly across the world to save your life, and now we're in an even bigger mess than we started with." She stared at him, eyes hard. "You can't control everything, Edward. No matter how hard you try. You just can't."
She groaned in frustration. "And the worst part is that you destroyed me with your decision too, Edward. All of you left without so much as a goodbye. Not even a note, or a phone call. I thought of you like a brother, and you didn't even have the decency to talk to me or tell me what was going on. I hated you, all of you, for so long because it wasn't just Jasper who betrayed me. It wasn't just him who left me."
"I thought that it would be better for everyone in the longrun," Edward replied, his voice soft. "I should have talked to you, talked to Bella. I didn't even think about how you would feel, and for that I am truly sorry, Evelyn."
Evelyn stared straight ahead. She could just barely see Marie's house around the next street corner. "I'm so afraid, Edward," she breathed, shaking her head. "I wish we had never gone to Volterra."
"I'm sorry," Edward said again, knowing fullwell that it was his fault that the Volturi were after them, after her, in the first place. "But we truly are safe for now. Alice is watching their decisions very closely. If anything changes, I'll let you know as soon as possible."
Evelyn searched his face, her eyes wide. "You better. I'm tired of the secrets, Edward. No more lies."
He nodded solemnly, gently taking her hand. "You're right. No more lies."
