FORTY-SIX| the heyward secret
EDEN sympathetically bandaged Heyward up.
The Twinkie sped through the island towards Heyward's shop, where they were quick to find the man. Eden's heart immediately sank when she saw his appearanceโthe corner of his forehead was bloodied, and he looked exhaustedโbecause of all people, Heyward was the last person who deserved this.
Being the care taker, and the sympathetic she was, the Bexley had been quick to instruct the Pogues to find her some medical supplies to clean the man up.
Despite the banter he had with the teenagers, or the smart ass and sarcastic comments he was always throwing at the Pogues, Heyward did care about themโa lot. He could pretend to find them annoying, or a burden to his son, but each teen had grown on him in one way or another. It was shown in the way he watched over JJ like his own because he knew Luke was a deadbeat; let Eden stay over if she wanted too because he knew Isla's cold heart well; sometimes payed John B. for helping out or let him have free food because he knew his financial situation; always kept his couch open for one of them to crash on. Let them all see him as a father figure.
And, personally, Eden thought he deserved the same treatment back.
So, she stood slightly leaning forward in front of Heyward, bandage in her hands. Nimbly, she tried to place it upon the woundโshe'd cleaned it up quicklyโbut noticed the cringe of his features every time she neared the vicinity of the wound. Under her breath, Eden muttered an apology. "Sorry. Tell me if I'm hurting you."
Heyward denies, "You're doing just fine."
He lets out a soft groan as Eden sets the bandage down on the wound, slowly backing up with a thin lipped smile once she does. "Okay, I'm done. Everything feel okay?"
"Thank you, darlin'." Heyward nods, "Thank you."
The moment that Eden stepped away from his dad, Pope came forward. His eyes were serious and his voice was firm as he asked, "Pop, what happened?"
"Oh, I should've known better." Heyward scoffed, beginning to explain what had gone down. Eden's eyes get caught on Sarah for a split second as the blonde moves beside Kiara, John B.'s gaze lingers firmly on her-of course something had happened between them. "He came in just as I was about to lock up. Caught me by surprise. Once he had me down, he put his knee in my chest, and he asked me about that....that-that key from that...that drawing you showed me."
Pope's eyes slightly widened and he looked back at Eden, who nodded her head; she too came to the same realization. The man who jumped Heyward had been Limbrey's lackeyโshe'd beckoned him to go and find information on the key, and he'd done so. Clearly, Carla Limbrey was still hot on their tracks.
"And, in case you're wonderin'." Heyward finished, looking between each teen. "I ain't tell him nothin'." Each teen gave a small face of appreciationโanother show that Heyward did care. If he didn't want Pope or the Pogues to succeed, he could have told what he knew. "Now, did you track it down?"
Pope pulls the key he'd shown off to the Bexley and Carrera from his pocket and meekly hands it over to his father. The man takes it, slightly surprised as his son explains, "I found it in Mee-maw's old apartment right above the pharmacy, just like you said it was."
"Shit, boy." Heyward glances from the key to his son, "You should've gave this to me, I wouldn't have had to take a beating." His comment causes Pope to slightly frown and he proceeds, "What's the big deal? It ain't worth anything. Why they want it so bad?"
"I don't know. First, I get this letter telling me that I need to go to Charleston. And then I meet this rich lady who wants me to give her a key that I didn't even know was in my family."
Kiara shakes her head, "None of it makes any sense."
Heyward's booming voice echoed, "Well, don't ya'll just sit here whining about it! Figure it out!"
"No." Pope quickly shakes his head, shutting the idea down. "I'm just gonna give the key to that lady. It's not worth itโ"
"No, no, noโdid I raise you to back down from a fight, boy?"
Pope shakes his head, holding his father's gaze, "No, sir."
"Well, alright. Now I...I didn't think about it before. I admit that. But now..." Heyward points to the bandage atop his forehead, "Now? I'm interested. Well, did they say why they wanted it?"
"She said something about an old cross?" Eden recalls. She isn't sure how any treasure could make Mrs. Limbrey happierโshe was rich. "We think it might be some kind of lost treasure, which I'm sure Limbrey will only use to her own benefit because she's already filthy rich."
"You know who you should talk too?" Heyward asks, handing the key back to his son. "Your great-grandma, Mee-Maw."
Pope's eyes slightly widen. They had another lead.
The car ride to go visit Pope's Mee-Maw's was tension filled.
Everyone was silent at first, the soft melody coming from the radio being the only sound. Sarah and John B. were making eyes at one another while Pope and Kie hadn't bothered to make eye contact at allโcouple quarrels had certainly occurred once Topper dispersed, placing another layer of tension and snappiness upon the shoulders of the Pogues, who'd already been angry at one another enough the past week.
"Guys, the thing that Limbrey said, I don't think she meant to let it slip." Pope piped up, leaning against the back of John B.'s. Eden sat beside him against the back of JJ's seatโthe blonde had whined about wanting shot-gun. "She said the key leads to the cross of Santo Domingo."
JJ throws a hand backโalmost whacking Eden in the faceโto take the key from the Heyward's grasp, "Wait. Can I see that?"
As Pope hands over the key, Sarah blankly states, "Are we supposed to know what that is?"
Eden sighs, "It's probably a historical artifact of some kind. Something that was meaningful and important in it's time that Limbrey thinks will help her now."
"Well, according to the interwebs." Kiara scrolls on her phone through Wikepedia pages and linksโshe'd been their searcher the past few days, googling and webbing for questions they didn't hold the answers to. "It was a gift from New Spain to the Spanish King."
"New Spain?" JJ bluntly asks, looking at the Routledge beside him, "Is there an Old Spain?"
Eden throws a hand over the seat to rub his shoulder reassuringly, "And this is why we go to Mr. Sunn's class."
"Shit, talk about over-gifting. Look at that thing." Kiara scoffed, flipping her phone to show an image she was looking at. The picture showed an outlined cross with decorative ornaments and a shorter, medieval dressed man standing beside itโa height comparison of sorts. "Looks like there's a person standing next to it."
JJ turned his head to see the image and deadpanned, "So it's a giant-ass cross."
"It was widely considered at the time to be the most extravagant tribute ever from the provinces." the Carrera girl reads aloud, "It was lost off the coast of Bermuda in 1829."
The finishing sentence piqued JJ's interest, the boy quickly whipping around to ask, "Did you just say Bermuda?"
"Oh, no, not the triangle." John B. softly groansโhe didn't want to hear the Maybank fall down his hole of conspiracy theories again, as he had thousands of other times in the past.
"It always leads back to the triangle, dude." the Maybank lightly hits John B.'s arm, to which the Routledge boy closes his eyes and starts nodding along like he agreed. "Like every single time it's something weird, it's Bermuda."
Eden looks up at the blonde boy, "If you're about to go on your ten hour conspiracy rant, let's save it for later tonight so John B. and I can mentally prepare ourselves."
"Okay, well, what does a key found above your Mee-Maw's pharmacy have to do with any of this." Kiara asks, looking at the Heyward boy. "And where do we come in?"
"I don't know." Pope admits, "That's a good question."
The Twinkie slows in front of the nursing home and everyone begins to exit. JJ is first, sliding the side door open so Pope could climb out, Eden filing out as well. However, once Kiara appears beside him, the Heyward boy speaks up. "Hey, um, actually, I think I'm gonna do this one by myself."
Kie gave him an odd look-she felt like they been working as a pair on this whole key mission. "Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I can handle it." Pope assured, a small hit of attitude in his tone as he spoke to the Carrera girl. "I don't really need you, so....."
An almost surprised expression came across Kiara's face and she seemed to be wracking up an insult when JJ stepped in, stopping the small scene before it got any further, "Oh, we're just all one big happy family today, aren't we?"
"Stop with the arguing." Eden sent a pointed stare to the two teens. She was growing tired of John B. and Sarah's painful stares, she didn't need to listen to Kiara and Pope throw backhanded comments at each other, too. "Pope, go and figure out what's going on with the key. Text us when you need us back."
Pope's gaze lingered firmly on Kiara before he turned away and began walking towards the elderly home.
Eden and JJ returned into the car with Kie, John B. and Sarah, the group beginning to aimlessly drive around Kildare County to waste time away. However, it didn't take Eden long before she grew sick of the tension filled silenceโthe staring between John B. and Sarah which was still going on, the pursed lips on Kiara's face from what Pope had saidโand their inability to communicate, so she ordered the Routledge boy to stop at a local convenience store to get them some snacks and drinks; maybe that could loosen their solemn moods up.
Once at the convenience store, Kiara was quick to whisper something in Sarah's ear before the two girls dispersed to the store with the request of getting Eden a Spriteโthe Bexley loved Sarah and Kie, but she didn't really want to hear them bitch about John B. or Pope when both boys probably had a valid reason to be upset.
So, she stayed with the Maybank and Routledge boys in the Twinkieโthe original trio, back again. Moving her position so she was sitting on the small console between the two, she leaned against John B.'s arm, listening to the conversation.
"Remember when life was simple?" JJ mindlessly hums.
"Yeah, like seven days ago." John B. retorts, staring out the crackedโEden isn't sure how he can clearly drive with the two giant puncture cracks within the glassโwindshield aimlessly.
Eden alters his answer, "You mean a month ago. Nothing's really been simple since you and Sarah decided to die." He was right to say that things were simpler a week ago, but nothing had been easier, but it hadn't been simple or normal.
"Speaking of a Cameron." John B. changes the conversation to a more serious topicโto Ward Cameron, as he always did. "I mean, dude, think about it. Ward's still out there, and he's got the goldโ"
"I know." JJ seems tired of hearing the same words, "I knowโ"
"โand he killed my dad."
"John B., I know." the Maybank states, "And we won't let that go. But, I'm worried about you, man. It feels like it's either you or him. And you know who else I'm worried about?" He nods to the two girls walking out of the convenience store, drinks in hand. "Sarah."
"I think we should be watching over Sarahโworrying about her." Eden nods in agreement. Sarah Cameron had grown to hate both her brother and her father, but the fact still stood that Ward was her dad. "Ward is still her father."
"She knows what he did." John B. stares at Sarah for a split second, peeling his eyes off her figure soon after and changing the topic. "So, what's the deal with this Limbrey chick?" He glances at the girl beside him, "You and Pope say she has evidence on tape that could put Ward away, right? And could get your mom in some serious trouble, too?"
Eden hums, "Mhm."
"On the other hand, though, she did just try to kidnap Eden and Pope, andโ" JJ begins to disagree.
"But think about it, alright?" John B. thinks that whether or not Limbrey was a bad character, or tried to kidnap his friends, she could be the key to ending everything. They could use her to their advantage. "If we can get that evidence, it's done. We could put Ward away for good and finally get justice for my dad."
"Not that I ever want to see this Limbrey bitch again, but she could help." Eden too thinks that Carla Limbrey could be their best shot at getting Ward, Isla, and Rafe in jail. "And I really want to see Ward and Rafe get the karma they deserve. I want to see your dad get justice. IโI want to see my mom go down for this."
"This can all be over in one shot, J." the Routledge nods, "I get it. It's dangerousโ"
JJ smirks, "Good thing your best friend's JJ Maybank."
"Uh-uh. His best friend is Eden Bexley." Eden corrects with a smirk, watching as JJ rolls his eyes from the passenger side. "You're just there."
"That wasn't necessary."
"Just wanted to make sure you didn't get the wrong idea." the Bexley's smirk is still eminent as she teases the Maybank.
ย "As I was saying." JJ drags with a pointed expression at Eden before continuing, "Good thing your best friend is JJ Maybank. 'Cause I already got a plan."
John B. lets out a sharp exhale, "Hopefully, it's better than springing me out of jail."
"Nah, this is my best yet. Listen." JJ playfully shoves the Bexley back, "Move. Boys only conversation."
Eden rolls her eyes and moves out of the center console to let JJ whisper in his friend's ears, middle finger raised. "Fuck you, number one. Number two; I don't regret what I said about me being his best friend."
JJ holds up his middle finger and he continues whispering to John B., and the Bexley exits the van with an unimpressed expression.
She spots Kiara and Sarah chatting around the convenience store and decides to join the girls, despite not wanting to hear the relationship drama they were facing. Eden paces over, taking her Sprite from the Cameron's hand with a smile, "The boys booted me. What are you two discussing?"
"Them, actually." Sarah states, a slight hint of annoyance in her tone as she began to speak, "John B. is totally overreacting right now. Of course I thanked Topper. He saved my life, and I'd put him through so much alreadyโand you'd think that is the crime of the century."
"Tell me about it." Kiara shakes her head, thinking about where she currently stood with Pope. "All this crazy shit's happening, and Pope's giving me the silent treatment for not being in love with him."
Ah. So that's where the Pope and Kiara tension came from. Pope had been trying his best to make the relationship work while Kie had been losing feelings day by day. Eden wants to feel bad for both of them, but somehow, she can't feel as much remorse for the Carrera girl and how the Heyward has been treating her.
Of course it isn't entirely Kiara's fault that she lost feelings for Pope, Eden just thinks she didn't handle it the right way. She continued to 'date' Pope, she let him think he was her boyfriend instead of communicating that she didn't know if she really loved himโthey even had sex, which the Bexley assumes made Pope feel like they could work. When in reality, they couldn't.
"And we're the dramatic ones." Sarah muses with a smile. She then turns to the Bexley and sighs, "Maybe we should just stay single like Eden. She doesn't have to worry about boys all the time."
"Have you seen who I'm friends with?" the Bexley jabs a finger at JJ and John B. as they approached the Twinkie. Sure, she wasn't in a relationship, but she still dealt with the childishness of boys; the Routledge and the Maybank were prime examples.
"True." Kiara nods.
"I could always just date you instead, Eden." Sarah slightly chuckles, circling her drink around in her hand as they stop in front of the Twinkie door.
Eden smiles, "We'd be a hotter couple, anyway."
The girls begin to re-enter the vehicle with their drinks, causing JJ to send them an odd look. "What are you ladies talking about?"
"Girls only conversation." the Bexley retorts, bringing her cup up to her lips.
Hearing that your close friend is related to an ancient and well known figure isn't exactly a regular event.
However, here Eden wasโcelebrating the fact that Pope Heyward was related to none other then Denmark Tanny himself.
After picking the boy up from the nursing home, he had tear stained cheeks yet a wide smile on his face. They hadn't even been driving for seconds before he dropped the bomb that Denmark Tannyโthe man related to the cross and the key, the reason behind the gold huntโwas Pope's great grandfather generations back.
Holy. Fucking. Shit.
The Twinkie had been filled with excitement and questions, asking what his Mee-Maw had exactly told himโthe key was indeed Denmark's and Limbrey had questioned him because he was a direct descendant of Denmark and Ceceliaโand if they should be celebrating right nowโwhich was yes.
As to why the group was now standing at the dock behind Heyward's, cans of beer in their hands as they chatted and discussed the situation.
"I still can't believe that you're related to Denmark Tanny." John B. voices what everyone's mind was stuck on since Pope exclaimed the news.
JJ nods quickly, flask in hand. "Uh-huh."
"Are we in the presence of a royal?"
"A king?" JJ gasped, pacing up to Pope with his hands raised, as if he was setting a crown on the boys head. He puts on a poor British accent as he does the movement. "We shall crown him. All hail the lord of Tannyhill! We're not worthy!"
All the other Pogues begin to bow teasingly, laughing.
"You're stealing my title, Bubs." Eden states with a smile from where she stood beside JJ. She used to be the Queen of Pogues, but now it seems the Heyward deserved the title more. "Pope Heyward; King of Pogues. I can see it."
"Alright, everybody, relax." Pope tried to dismiss his friends' childish behavior with an unimpressed smile, "Can we relax, please?"
"Anything you say, your majesty." Eden playfully says, causing Pope to send an even more unimpressed glance her way.
Sarah has a mischievous expression on her face, "Relocate the Cat's Ass, question mark?"
JJ points at the blonde, "I'm with that."
"How soon can we move in?" Kiara joins with raised brows.
"'Cause I don't have a place to stay, so..."
"Me either." Kie states, "Bunk beds?"
"Bunk beds." JJ hums, "Cheers to that."
Pope pipes back up, a more serious topic being voiced rather than a discussion on bunk beds, "I just keep thinking about the letter, the one that Limbrey sent. It had the wheat symbol on it. Like, that must mean it has something to do with the Royal Merchant."
"Yeah." the Maybank agrees, "Something seems fishy."
"I mean, he had something to do with the gold." Eden shrugs. Tannyhill was where everything had started, she wouldn't be too surprised if this key did have something to do with the Royal Merchant. "I wouldn't surprised if....maybe everything's connected. In some weird way."
"Maybe." Pope shrugs, continuing, "But, if we find that cross, we can split it like we were gonna split the gold."
Eden allows a small smile on her face again, "Plan Kook; part two?"
JJ nods firmly, "Yeah. I'm with that."
"And live happily ever after?"
The Pogues all look forward to see Carla Limbrey standing on the dock, prim and proper as ever. Beside her was her lackey, leather jacket around his figure and a black and white patterned umbrella in his grasp, covering the woman in front of him.
The air grew tense and all excitement left the Pogues, backs straightening and gazes narrowing at the sight of the woman. JJ crosses over to stand beside the Heyward boy defensively, but that doesn't stop Pope from coming forward towards the two.
"You assaulted my father." Pope spat, stepping forward towards Limbrey with an accusing stare. He'd despised her since he escaped her mansion but after she'd sent out her lackey to beat up his father, his despise turned to hatred.
Limbrey's lackey steps forward and pushes Pope away from Limbrey.
Limbrey purses her lips, "Oh, I didn't assault anybody."
Kiara rolls her eyes, "He can identify the psycho from a mile away."
"Why would my employee assault your father?" Limbrey looked between her lackey and Pope, as if she was offended by the statement-as if she wasn't the one playing dirty. "That's absurd."
Hearing the woman try to lie made Eden even more pissed off than before-she'd already dealt with Isla trying to gaslight her, she wasn't really in the mood to hear yet another Kook try it, too.
"I have dealt with enough lying women this week to know exactly why you beat Heyward up. I know how you people play." Eden snaps, crossing her arms over her chest. She wasn't scared of this lady, and certainly wasn't going to let the woman try to play them. "We have something you want."
The woman's features slightly fell and she herself turned more serious.
"Miss Bexley is correct." Limbrey glances at the Bexley before staring firmly at Pope, "We can keep on negotiating, but the fact is that I want the key."
The man beside her came forward and pushed the Heyward against the docks supporting beam. Kiara eyes widened and she called out, "Hey!"
"Easy." JJ grits.
"And I won't stop until I have it." Carla Limbrey's voice grows louder and more threatening as she goes, " I don't have a choice, which means you don't either."
There's a small beat of silence before John B. speaks up.
"It's Limbrey, right?" John B. is holding a key up in the air, rather casually.
Eden sends him a confused expressionโwas he really giving it up so easily?โbefore she noticed that the key he was holding was missing the red ribbon Denmark's key had wrapped around it. She has to stop the smile growing on her face when she realizes that they were all about to trick Carla Limbrey with a fake key.
The elder blonde whips her head around, growing tense when she see's the key dangling in the boy's grasp. "Yes."
"Is this what you're looking for?"
Limbrey breathes, "Yes, it is."
"Looking at the tide right now, I'd say it's about twenty feet deep out there." the Routledge boy stares out into the water, "So, if I just threw it in the channel, the probability of you finding it again is slim to none. You wanna give it a shot? Let's see what happens?" John B. stands up and paces towards the edge of the dock, "Ready?"
Limbrey's eyes grow wider and she desperately chases the boy, "No! Hey!"
John B. opened his closed fist to reveal that it had been empty and fiddled around with the key in his opposite hand.
"Please don't do that again." Limbrey weakly sighs.
With a firm gaze, John B. points towards the lackey, who was still standing near Pope. Voice firm and protective, he states, "Get him to back the hell up."
"Of course." Limbrey forces a smile on her face, lips tightening as she faces her lackey, "Back up."
The man does so, stepping behind the blonde woman.
Limbrey approaches the Heyward boy, "As I have told you from the beginning, I am willing to be reasonable."
"And so are we." Eden's eyes dart between John B., who nods his headโthey'd mastered the whole conversations via eye contact thing years agoโand Pope, who seems to be piecing together what was happening, given the key was in his pocket, not John B.'s hand. She takes the fake key from the Routledge boy's grasp and outstretches it. "We'll give you the key in exchange for the tapes."
"Of course." A genuine smile crosses Carla Limbrey's face, "Of course."
"Eden, hey." John B. crosses over to the girl, and Eden has to try her best not to laugh at the acting skills he was putting on. "This isn't your decision to make, it's Pope's key."
"No, it's okay." Pope whispers, joining into the trick they were about to pullโit was risky to give her a fake key, but it was also smart. "I agree with Eden."
The Routledge boy puts on a display of fake surprise, "No, dude, this is your family'sโ"
"Hey, it's fine. It's okay." Pope nods again, looking at the Routledge, "It's about your dad. That's way more important." He nods at the Bexley, who curled her hand back into a fist with the key inside, "Hand it over, Eden."
"Oh, you're a good friend." Limbrey smiles, almost surprised that they'd given in so easily.
"I want the tapes first." Eden states, unwavering gaze locked on Limbrey's blue eyes.
"Yes, give her the tapes." Limbrey looks back at the man, who pulls out two tapes and sets them down into Eden's outstretched hand, the exact same second Limbrey takes the key from the Bexley's hand. A done deal.
Once the key is in her grasp, Limbrey looks at Pope and sighs, "You know, I wish that you'd come to this decision earlier." Her face drops, "We could have avoided all this unpleasantness."
The woman turns around and begins to walk out of the dock, crutches nicking the wood with every movement.
"Nice to meet you." John B. blandly comments, earning a groan from Limbrey.
The lackey opens his umbrella again and sends a smug smile towards Pope, "See you later, Pope."
Kiara sighs, "Just go."
Everyone is eerily silent for a few moments as Limbrey and her lackey walk away, but once their too far away to hear any conversation, JJ breaks it.
A smile is fighting it's way upon the Maybank's face as he quietly asks, "How long do you think we have until she realize's she has your father's old key?"
Bluntly, John B. replies, "Ten minutes."
Once Limbrey is out of sight, Pope whips back around with wide eyesโout of anything that his friends could have done, he certainly hadn't expected a fake key switcharoo. "Whose idea was the fake key?"
Kiara states, "Surprisingly not mine."
"Hm." John B. wraps an arm around the Maybank boy beside him, who is slyly smiling, and pats the boys chest. "I don't know. Should we tell them?"
Eden scoffs, "So that's what you were discussing when you booted me out of the Twinkie?"
"Wow." Kiara chuckles, "I'm impressed. Maybe you are good for something."
Pope approaches the two boys with a growing smile, "Did hell freeze over?"
"I think the fact that Plan; Appendicitis and Plan; Fake key took place in the span of a day needs to be discussed." the Bexley walks over towards the three boys sitting and warmly smiles over at JJ, "Nice job, J."
"Thank you, your majesty." JJ genuinely smiles, laughing as Pope begins to play punch him in ribs, John B. shaking his shoulders. "Even a blind pig can find an acorn at times." At the confused expression he earned from the Bexley, he admitted, "I actually don't even know what that means, but I saw it on Reddit."
"Of course you did." Eden replies.
John B. gets up and points at the tapes in Eden's hands, "We gotta take this tapes to Shoupe."
"Yes, sir." JJ exclaims, following after his friend, "Ward Cameron and Isla Bexley, we're coming for you!" He turns around and continues to walk backwards, jabbing a finger at Eden, "Shotgun!"
Eden huffs with an eye roll, "Next time it's mine!"
"It's Ward turn now!" Pope hollers, chasing after his friends towards the Twinkie.
Eden followed after her friends, hoping that her mother and Ward would finally get what they deserved.
