❝ If that's what my champion wants, that's what she'll get. ❞
Lifespan of an earthling is fucking short, it was what Britt Baker had always imagined it would be. Human beings are going to get old someday and everyone would die at some point.
Not that it's her problem since she's a wizard capable of doing a lot things, a quite successful one at that. Britt doesn't like how humans wasted their time in illogical things. Time is precious and it continues to exist.
Tick.
Tock.
The sound echoes in her head, the second hand moving tortuously slow. It's deep, resonating loud, shattering reality like the slamming of the car against his body.
She can fix this. She can. She's Britt Baker, a fucking time wizard. She can save one, small human.
One reset. Just one left.
Tick.
Tock.
"Britt!"
She has to fucking fix it.
She knows what it'll cost not to.
~~
"Have fun with the humans!" Rebel (Not Reba) teases, waggling her finger at Britt.
"Shut it! It's not like you're going anywhere exciting."
"No, but at least it won't be as boring as Earth!" Rebel snorts.
Britt doesn't want to waste any of her practically infinite time on Rebel. She presses her hands together, flame-like particles flickering across her palms as she cuts through the space, creating a void to bring her to the human realm.
Humans have one of the most archaic ways of measuring time; linear. There's no bounce or creativity, no finesse. They move continuously in one direction, unable to change anything about how their lives go. It's not as if timelines don't diverge, but to humans, they only experience one, the other small branches ignored by their tiny consciousness's.
It's her unfortunate job however, to determine how humans deal with time, how they view it, how they feel it. For something like linear time, Britt couldn't imagine it would be anything difficult.
She has three resets. Three chances to change timelines if things go wrong. But she's never had to use those before. She doesn't want to. There are consequences to these things. Her powers will be gone if she has no more resets. She'll be trapped on whatever timeline she ends on.
Britt clicks her tongue when she steps onto the Earth, ready to start her study. It's one of her least favourite realms. Its smells and people are fucking disgusting creatures. They build their cities, destroy the planet with fumes and toxins. Eventually they start over again, when they realize they've hit the point of no return. They return to the land to try and cultivate it, save what they've already ruined.
Idiots. All of them.
She's seen their full timeline, but for some reason she chooses this modern era to visit. Something about the blissful ignorance draws Britt in. She loves knowing she's better than all of them.
~~
She meets him in a planetarium of all places.
Usually she spends her days in the time exhibits, studying how humans think they should measure time by the way their planet rotates around the sun and spins on its own axis. It's not incorrect, but it's very selfish.
But, this time, she ends up in the planetarium by accident (or is it on purpose, sometimes she can't tell when she's in this human form), and she meets him. He's lying down on the ground when she walks into the room. The dome stretches up over their heads and his cheeks are flushed as he stares up at the blank ceiling.
She's always known she would meet him. But something in the branches of his timeline gets befuddled after him. Lines cross and diverge and spread out in multiple directions. So maybe finding him here in this room is what humans call 'fate'.
"Oi," she calls out.
He gasps, immediately sitting up. His long dark brown hair flips out in multiple directions, flattened from him lying on it. "Oh my gosh!" he mutters and tries to shake the dirt off from his pants. "I-I didn't realize anyone else was here!"
"The fuck are you doing?" she grunts, shoving her hands in her pockets as she lazily walks down the steps.
"I was uhm... I was looking at the ceiling of the dome." His cheeks flush as he speaks, realizing how utterly ridiculous he sounds.
"When there's nothing on it?"
The way some humans choose to pass their minimal time is beyond Britt's comprehension.
"Well... I, uhm, actually know the show by heart?" he says while his face lights up with a smile, "There are no more shows for today, but I can recount it for you, if you're sad you missed it."
"Hah?!" she says, about to protest but he takes a pose in the middle of the floor, holding his stance.
His hand shoots up and sweeps across his head as though he's trying to paint some kind of picture. "'Ages and ages ago, the universe was made of nothing, just energy'!" He turns to her, nodding up and down excitedly. "See okay, right now, the screen looks like a swirling black cloud."
"Mister," she grunts, trying to get him to stop.
"'Until there was a big BANG!'" He yells and shoots his hands up, stretching out his palms.
"Mister!" she yells and he stops in place.
"Oh... uh... sorry," he mutters. "I bet you didn't come here for the show."
"Fuck no," she growls.
"R-Right... Sorry, I just get really excited about space. I'm Adam Cole, so now you can always remember this amazing show I just put on for you."
"Whatever," she scoffs. "I was looking for a different room."
"What's your name?" he asks and she pauses. She doesn't normally tell people her name. What's the point? They're going to forgot anyways.
"It doesn't matter," she coldly mutters.
"I promise I won't do anything weird with your name!" Britt knows he won't let this go.
"Britt," she replied. "Britt Baker. Why the hell do you like space so much?" she asks.
He blinks, as if she's asked him the strangest question. "Because," he says, a large smile pulling across his lips, "it's so big and amazing and it feels like anything can happen when I look up at the sky." He turns his blue gaze toward the ceiling, as though he expects the show to magically appear.
Britt's heart throbs. A pulsation in her chest she can't define, no matter how many times she's watched the various paths of her life, nothing feels like this.
She becomes a part of Adam Cole's timeline then.
~~
She expects him to be stupid, the way he seems to float through his existence. He's pure, innocent and happy go-lucky and he doesn't seem to have a care in the world. How very human of him.
And she loves it.
She loves him.
He links their pinkies together, swinging them as they walk down the street. A scarf is wrapped around his neck, wearing a ridiculous shade and they're going to the park.
The mundane is something Britt never expected to love. There are so many realms and places and of all the creatures in the whole goddamn universe, she's attached to this tiny spec. A blip on the timeline of existence, but Adam Cole is her everything and she wishes she could slow down time to be with him. Maybe she'll figure it out somehow, she's the best damn time wizard she knows; if anyone can figure it out, she can.
"What do you think? I'm going to guess it's going to snow in... a week!" he says, leaning over the edge of the bridge. "We could go ice skating," he smirks. He knows she hates it.
"Fuck no," she grumbles, poking at his cheek.
"Please," he begs. "You got it by the end of last winter!" He turns to her and drapes his arms around her neck, tugging on her scarf. "If you do this, we can do whatever you want later."
She rolls her eyes, pouting at how cute he is. "We could do that now."
Adam slowly smiles as he leans down to press their lips together, kissing her, cupping her rosy cheeks between his warm palms.
~~
She knows it's coming when it happens. She's replayed it in her mind over and over again. But standing there on the bridge, their eyes locking before it happens is a completely different experience.
The way he holds his hands out, the car slamming into his body before he even has time to scream.
She's known about the incident but she can't place why she would care about it. And there's something about this day that's blurry in all timelines.
In her timeline, she can wake up to him that morning anytime she wants. His dark long brown hair, caressing his warm face. She loves him. She loves him. She loves him. The words never get old no matter how many times she says them.
She hates this timeline now, hates that she needs him, hates that on this day his time just stops. She's a being of time, something far above humans and yet this man has her weak and he'll never understand how much.
Today, she'll use her first reset. She shouldn't do it for one boy, one small insignificant boy who has become her universe.
She pulls the watch out and yanks out the small button on the side. She slams it back in and the hands on the face begin to turn, slow at first, but they gradually pick up speed.
Around her, the timeline shifts. She rushes through space surrounding the Earth as the universe shifts and bends, purples, blues, yellows all rush past him, realigning themselves to this new world.
And suddenly, she's back in their bedroom.
She sees this timeline now and she sighs. She has more time to try and delay what seems to be the inevitable but goddamn it if she won't try.
~~
"Do you believe in 'forever'?" Adam asks her, their hands swinging together as they walk through the park.
Today, she'll use his second reset.
Nope. Britt Baker doesn't believe in forever. At least, she didn't used to. Time isn't infinite, at some point all things must end, but not before she wants them to.
"No," she growls.
"Britt," he snorts.
"What? You asked me a question and I'm answering honestly." Especially since she knows what today brings.
"I mean, I guess I'm asking if you believe in the universe going on forever. Not us..."
She wants to believe they can go on forever. It's why she's willing to use these precious resets.
"Probably not. It's gotta end at some point."
Today.
"I don't know why you're being so cryptic!" he laughs, shaking his head back and forth. He leans against the bridge, his thin and long hair gently flapping in the breeze against his skin. She reaches out to touch him, pull him in for a kiss before she knows it's too late.
Later, while they're at dinner, his hand clutches his chest. His heart gives out on him, like it's too full, has too much love to hold and he can't possibly live with the burden of such a heavy heart.
"Someone call a fucking ambulance!" Britt screams, even though she knows it's too late.
She pulls out the watch and slams down on the button; not caring it's already her second reset.
~~
Reset three is when she almost dies with him. A fatal car accident. Her fault.
She's careless and they're arguing about something mundane, and she drives straight through a stop sign. She can't stop the event from happening, despite knowing exactly what she causes.
The loud noise of the truck horn resonates in her mind. She hears it constantly, over and over, a reminder of how horrible this timeline is.
His body is crushed in the impact, and his neck snaps with the motion of it, killing him instantly. No pain.
Britt keeps her head pressed against the window, blood smearing the surface. She pulls out the watch from her pocket and sees the small 'one'.
This will be her last chance. It means she will be a human. A creature that she used to despise. She don't want to be a human. She will die in this timeline, and only see time in this horrible, shitty, linear way.
Coughing, she hovers her hand over the button. "Third time's the charm," she says, before passing out.
~~
When she comes to, Rebel is right in her face. "What the hell are you doing?" she asks, and Britt pants, glancing down at her spotless body. No injuries, no wounds, no car.
No Adam Cole.
"What do you mean what the hell am I doing?! Why the hell did you pull me off of Earth!?" she screams. He's dying down there, bleeding out all alone.
"You were about to use your final reset."
"Fuck off, that's not your business!"
"You went there to study their time, but what did you learn?"
There's plenty she learned, about the mundane, about experiencing time in a special way... about him.
Rebel sighs. "You love that human."
"Of course, I fucking do!" she yells. "I'm going to use my fucking last reset!"
"Then you'll be human."
"So be it," she snaps. It no longer feels like the worst thing. "I can be with him and we can die when we're supposed to and I don't have to deal with this shitty universe anymore. I don't have to watch it rip him from me every goddamn day. It is what it is."
She wants to see his smile everyday; live his life as he should. This is exhausting. Infinity is exhausting.
Rebel swallows. "If this is what you really want."
Britt stares in silence, and pushes the button.
~~
"And NEW AEW Women's World Champion...Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D."
Her senses came back as she heard various noises in the area, there are people cheering nonstop as she raised her belt proudly.
She can't see this timeline. Time moves slowly, linearly. She pulls out her watch and the reset count reads zero. This is her final timeline which isn't bad because she's a champion.
The backstage were filled of people congratulating her and giving her a warm hugs. It's welcoming. She turns her attention looking for someone but he isn't here.
"Looking for your boyfriend?" A man wearing a suit asked as she simply nodded her head.
"He's outside...waiting for you. Congrats Britt Baker! You made us all proud!" Tony Khan hugged her, wearing a very proud smile. She thanked everyone, waving her hand as she said her farewell.
He's lying down on the ground when she walks outside. His cheeks are flushed as he stares up. It's a familiar scene, one Britt has witnessed on multiple occasions. But instead of seeing him staring at the blank ceiling, he's staring at the sky filled with stars.
She watches the way his chest rises and falls, his lips move as he silently sings a Taylor Swift song he loves so much.
Some things do change from timeline to timeline. She should feel uncertain, but with him in front of her, she feels home.
"Hey..." she calls out.
"Ah!" he gasps and sits up so fast. "I'm sorry, I didn't see you!"
"You didn't finish my match?"
"I did. I just went outside to breathe some fresh air. It was suffocating on the backstage. Besides even if I don't, I know you'll do well. Congrats New Champ! I'm so happy for you!"
He slowly walks towards her as he flashes her with his beautiful warm smile. "Nice to meet you, I'm Adam Cole! I'm Britt Baker's number one fan!"
She giggles of how silly he is. "Not that I'm complaining," she says, "but you forgot the three most important letters..."
Adam shrugs, slinging his arm around her shoulder and smirks. His blue eyes shine with excitement and her heart pounds in her chest. This. Him.
"D.M.D era has now began...So doctor, where do you want to celebrate?" He asks.
He's worth the unknown.
"Anywhere...as long as I'm with you."
"If that's what my champion wants, that's what she'll get."
