❝ Real men don't take advantage of their hot female friends.❞
Kenny Omega blinked countless of times. Tessa Blanchard was drunk and there's no way that he will take advantage of her. It wasn't manly to do so and they were friends. That meant their relationship was platonic. There was no romance between them, no chemistry, and no feelings. Kenny respected Tessa and loved her. But only as a friend. He had to ignore his wants and needs because he was a man. Real men don't take advantage of their hot female friends.
Tessa didn't make it easy though, she kept brushing her fingers against his arm. Her smile. Her glittering eyes. Infectious laughter. Ugh! He shook his head and stared at the message Kay Lee Ray had sent him. She texted Tessa's hotel address because of all people, Kay Lee Ray chose to hang out with Damian Priest and ditch her friend. But it could be mean that she trusted him to take care of Tessa. The hotel wasn't too far, they would make it there in twenty minutes if they didn't get distracted. Just as he went to put his phone back into his pocket it buzzed. He tapped on the messaging icon and realized it was from Kay Lee Ray again.
Kay Lee Ray: Use protection, kids.
Kenny's eyes widened and he almost dropped his phone. He knows she's just joking around but seriously? Maybe it was because he had one too many sake bombs, but he felt the need to reply back.
Kenny: You ran off with Damian. You planning on fucking him too?
Kay Lee Ray: Fuck you. He ain't even my type.
Kenny smirked and slipped his phone into his back pocket. His eyes drifted over to Tessa, who had finally switched to water instead of liquor. The girl could hold her own, he wouldn't deny that, but no one should drink four sake bombs and two beers in less than two hours. He would behave himself and take the drunk girl home. Maybe he'd flirt a little. No! He couldn't do that cause flirting led to touching and touching led to kissing and then boom!
Tessa turned in her seat, sipping on her water. She put the glass down and slid off the stool. The restaurant had cleared out, for the most part, only a handful of people remained. Tessa walked over to Kenny, she stumbled a little over the rug. He held his hands out to catch her, but she managed to keep her balance and laughed. Man, her laugh was infectious. He found himself laughing too in a matter of seconds.
"Let's get out of here," Tessa said, looping her arm through Kenny's. "Take me dancing."
He chuckled. "You sure you can dance in your state?"
"I can always dance," she told him as she pulled him toward the door.
They came down the steps, Tessa laughing as she stumbled forward. Kenny kept his hold on her arm. When they made it to the safety of the sidewalk, they faced one another. "Are you okay?"
"Yes. Are you?" She placed a hand on his chest, letting it linger for a moment before pulling it away.
Kenny nodded. "Yeah, I'm great."
"Good," Tessa replied and looked around. "So where are we going?"
"I think I should walk you to your hotel."
Tessa stared then grabbed hold of his arm. "You're so good."
"Come on," Kenny said, guiding her in the direction of the hotel. She kept hold of his arm, pressed closely against him as they walked. Her warmth permeated through his shirt. The more he thought about it, the more he wondered what it would have been like if they ever dated. At this point, Kenny was certain he was in the friend zone. And he had placed her in the friend zone as well. That being said, there were moments...brief seconds in time at various points throughout their friendship where something tugged at him.
He figured it was hormones in high school. The Young Bucks' bad habits rubbed off on the guys from time to time. Ever since he had known Tessa, she had been the same person: friend to all, queen of the dance floor, undeniably enthusiastic and sometimes, problematic. yes, sometimes.
"I had a good time," Tessa said.
Kenny smiled. "Me too."
"Maybe it's the alcohol." Tessa stopped walking and let out a deep breath. "But, do you think we could have ever...you know?"
Kenny tilted his head. "What?"
If she were blushing, Kenny couldn't tell, but she seemed to be avoiding eye contact at all costs. Tessa cleared her throat. "Nevermind. It's the alcohol."
She was asking if there could have ever been something between them. He wasn't an idiot, but the fact they were both inebriated made him doubt that they should even have such a conversation. Should they ever have such a conversation, Kenny wanted them to both be sober. The problem with alcohol was it clouded your judgment and if they started talking about them, they'd both end up in a bed together. And his greatest fear was that in the morning she would regret it and their friendship would be forever ruined.
"How do you not have a girlfriend?" Tessa asked.
Kenny's mouth fell open, then he laughed. "I guess I haven't really put much thought into having one."
Tessa continued walking, but this time she kept her hands to herself. "You should get one."
"Why?"
"Cause you deserve it and whoever she deserves it."
"Man, you are drunk."
Tessa giggled. "No."
"What about you, Tessa?"
She blinked. "Me?"
Kenny nodded. "Why don't you have a boyfriend?"
Tessa pursed her lips, tapping her chin deep in thought. At least as deep as someone could get when they were buzzing. She ran over to the streetlight at the intersection. Grabbing hold, Tessa spun in a circle, wide grin on her face, head thrown back, eyes closed. Kenny stopped just out of her reach. She went around three times before stopping with her back to him.
When she didn't say or do anything, he stepped forward. "You okay?"
Tessa's shoulders sank. "I don't want a boyfriend."
Kenny raised an eyebrow. "You don't?"
"I want my other half. I want a man who is ready to be there consistently without me needing to ask him to show up. I want a man who is able to understand everything about me without me even having to speak. And will accept me for who I am despite this personality of mine."
Despite Tessa being drunk, at that moment Kenny knew those were her truest feelings. He'd seen her with other guys, but he wasn't sure if she ever saw her in love. She had loved people in the past, but there was a difference. At least he believed there was a difference between loving someone and being in love with someone.
Tessa turned on the balls of her feet, twirling like a ballerina. "I don't know when I'll find that particular man, but when I do I'll know it."
Kenny smiled. "He's out there."
They fell quiet again. These were not the plans he imagined when they ran into each other that afternoon. He only wanted to get dinner and head back home, yet somehow they were talking in the night below a buzzing street lamp.
Tessa crossed the street and Kenny followed a few steps behind her. She yawned, stretching her arms above her head. "I'm so sleepy."
"We're almost back to your hotel," Kenny said, placing a hand on the small of her back. "Think you can make it?"
"If you help."
"I got you," Kenny assured, guiding her to the hotel with no intention of getting into bed with her.
