❝ Blind dates don't work. Well, except it does.❞
"Are you kidding me? No way, Sasha! I don't wanna!"
"Awww! Please, Bayley! It'll be fun. You'll thank me later, I swear!"
Bayley glared at her best friend and also one of her roommates who pestering her at eight o'clock in the morning. Sasha is a morning person and she's not. Not to mention, the blue-haired sexy woman has this ridiculous idea.
"None of this is fun."
Sasha giggles at her, "That's because you've never really tried it."
"Duh, maybe because it's weird and NOT fun."
Sasha sighed dramatically and leaned back on the sofa.
"And why is that?"
Bayley frowned at her and hug her pillow.
"Just because."
"Ugh! Tell me an actual argument against blind dates, PLEASE!"
Before Bayley could respond, someone knocked on the door two times before opening it.
"Breakfast's almost ready, lads. Why are you screaming early in the morning?" Becky curiously asked.
Sasha immediately hugs Becky and whispered in her ear. The Irish woman slowly nodded her head and smiles.
"I see," Becky replied.
The three women walk towards the dining area and sat on the chairs.
"Why are you so noisy?" Charlotte asked as she flipped pancakes.
"Ugh," Bayley grunted.
"Sasha is forcing Bayley to attend a blind date later." Becky summarized earning a glare from the blue-head beauty.
"I'm not forcing her!"
"Oh really? / yes, you were." Becky and Bayley said respectively.
"C'mon, why are you so against blind dates?" Sasha asked her best friend which makes all eyes on Bayley.
"Well, it's just weird, you know? going out with a random stranger found on the net for a date and being all awkward." She nodded to herself because it was a perfectly reasonable argument.
The three of her roommates laughed at her reason which makes her pout.
"That was so funny!" Becky exclaimed between her laughs.
"Hahahaha, I'm sorry miss romantic, I didn't know you wanted to meet a soulmate!" Sasha teased, poking her best friend arm.
"Shut up." Bayley sighed and glanced at Charlotte who put plates of pancakes in front of them.
"You don't have to marry them you know." Charlotte simply replied.
Bayley rolled her eyes.
Becky grabbed a fork and pointed it at Bayley, "When was your last date?"
"I dunno...I dun remember." She mumbled around a mouthful of pancake and poured some more maple syrup. "Why does it matter?"
"You know what, Bay? I'm just worried about your health." Sasha retorted and smiled smugly when Bayley's face flushed.
"Ha ha. Leave my sex life alone."
"What sex life- ow Jesus, Bayley! That hurt." Sasha yelped and rubbed her bruised arm. "You're becoming violent, you shouldn't hang out with Alexa that much."
Bayley snorted and continued with her breakfast. Sasha also seemed to drop the subject.
"Why are you so hard pressed on this?" Bayley asked after they were done. Becky picked up the dirty dishes and put them in the sink. Charlotte went to the bathroom to take a shower.
Sasha shrugged.
"Just trying to be a good best friend and sister, ya know?"
Bayley narrowed his eyes suspiciously at Sasha who's comfortably sitting on the sofa and pick her phone.
"Are you....trying to use me as a test the waters kind of thing?"
Sasha laughed heartily at the question.
"Oh yes, of course. I want you to check if they are worth my time. Yeah, you've got me there."
Bayley felt like a fool because Sasha was right, that was a dumb suggestion.
"Just give it a try, nothing will change anyway. One time. No more. I promise you'll like him. He's just your type."
My type huh?
"How do you know what my type even is?" When I don't know that myself.
Sasha just smiled brightly and Bayley for a brief moment suspected witchcraft. Or her being on a candid camera.
She sighed once again.
"If I agree will you stop pestering me like a nagging mom?"
Sasha laughed and nodded her head.
"Come on Bayley, let's dress you up." Charlotte suddenly said, just finish her shower.
"I'll check her wardrobe. Becky, you fix Bay's hair and Charlotte's on makeup." Sasha suggested like a mission.
Becky and Charlotte nodded their head in agreement.
Bayley blinked confused, the brain cells of her roommates / best friends are on par today. It's going to be a long day.
--
She entered the café and immediately felt relief that it was normal looking. She was afraid that Sasha would pick some fancy place (her taste is incredibly amazing, it if it Charlotte, she's going to book a very fancy place). Instead, it was more toned down. The only problem was that it was on the other side of the city and Bayley had to take an hour long bus ride here.
And thus she was too early.
She entered anyway and spotted an empty table which she immediately sat at. She ordered black coffee and fiddled with her phone checking Twitter and Instagram.
Sasha was very much against giving Bayley the number of her blind date which was odd, but even odder was that she also kept their name and appearance a secret.
How do you expect me to know that they are the person?
Oh, you'll know. Trust me.
"Like hell." She muttered to herself as she took a sip of the rest of her coffee. She wasn't a mind reader and now she was beginning to really fear the person Sasha picked. She hoped she'd be done with this nonsense soon.
Bayley was playing with her cup and phone, and mentally preparing herself for the impossibly awkward situation she was about to be thrown into.
She sighed and looked up to check the people coming into the café, hoping that maybe she'd recognize someone or maybe they'd recognized her. It was starting to near five so they should be here at any moment.
She blinked and almost fell out of her chair when she saw a familiar face which she would recognize anywhere.
Specifically from across the hall of their dorm.
Finn Balor lived at the same building and floor as Bayley, just across the hall, and shared the apartment with AJ Styles with good brothers, Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows who coincidentally were buddies with Becky Lynch and Sasha Banks.
He was in a different department studying to become a lawyer. In his spare time, he liked to watch wrestling and he used to be a prodigy in terms of playing basketball but stopped playing in high school.
Bayley only knew these things because Sasha and Becky supplied her with them a few days after she solidified her friendship with AJ Styles and his buddies after a night out partying.
Bayley only talked to Finn like...four times maybe. Most of those times were either in the hallway or in the laundry room, and it was about mundane stuff like food or school. He's surprisingly a talkative person if he gets comfortable with you.
Except for that one time where Becky dragged her to a party thrown by AJ and she had the opportunity to talk to Finn for a whole hour until she was pounced on by her classmate aka Miss Little Bliss and red-haired petite beauty who she actually recognized as Carmella from 3rd floor and dragged away from her friends.
After that, Bayley wanted to talk to Finn about wrestling (hey! there's only a few of them who loves it in this building) and also curious why he stopped playing basketball, she never had the courage to, nor a good opportunity.
And...yeah she had a sort of a crush on him. Not that Sasha or Becky knows her little secret.
Now, if Sasha could arrange a date with Finn? That would have been awesome...maybe. Or maybe not. It would be probably even more awkward because she'd be actually spending time with a person she somewhat liked and making a fool out of herself.
She looked at her phone, hoping that her date would be avoidable after this whole ordeal. She wondered how close they were in Sasha's social circle.
"Excuse me."
She almost dropped the phone and cracked it on the table, when the familiar husky voice with an Irish accent spoke and cut through the background noise of the café.
"What?!" Bayley almost shouted and then her eyes bulged when she saw Finn standing in front of her table.
Oh crap.
"I uh I mean hi. Sorry you startled me."
Finn blinked unfazed by Bayley's reaction.
"Hi there, Bayley. I didn't expect to see you here."
"Y-yeah. Frankly speaking, I didn't expect to see myself here as well."
Finn's pale lips curled upwards.
"Why is that?"
"I uh, not my type of place."
"Hm." Finn hummed and looked around.
"I see. I actually wanted to check it out. It opened just last month."
"Ah, huh? Really."
Finn nodded.
"I'm sorry, you're probably waiting for someone and I am interrupting," Finn said politely, but when he was about to leave Bayley blurted out the first thing which came to her mind.
"I-yeah, no!"
Finn raised an eyebrow.
"I mean, yeah I am and no you're not."
Finn's amused smile grew.
"That's a strange answer. I am not what?"
"Interrupting me," Bayley said and slapped a hand over her forehead and Finn laughed quietly.
Somehow, Finn understood what Bayley wanted to convey and sat down at the table.
A waitress immediately appeared and Finn ordered a black coffee while Bayley ordered a chocolate latte.
"I'm-" Bayley started after a moment of silence when they were getting their drink. Finn waited for her to finish.
"Promise you won't laugh?"
He nodded.
Bayley looked around as if he was letting Finn in on top-secret information.
"I was set up on a blind date."
To Bayley's surprise, Finn didn't laugh, but she saw how his eyes subtly widened.
"What?"
"That's...very interesting."
"How so?"
"Because I was set up as well."
Bayley stared at Finn.
"What? Seriously?"
Finn nodded and took a sip of his coffee.
"AJ was pestering me about this for a week." He frowned.
Bayley snorted.
"Yeah, Sasha did so too."
"Sasha Banks?" Finn raised an eyebrow. "She didn't seem like this kind of person."
"Oh, believe me. You don't know her as well as I do."
"Hm." Finn took another sip.
Bayley was suddenly hit with a realization.
"Wait...so if Styles set you and Sasha set me up...and it the same café....does it mean...?"
Finn looked at her expectantly.
Nah it was impossible.
"....that they got the idea from each other?"
Finn blinked slowly. His face was completely blank.
"It could be. They are good friends."
Bayley grimaced.
"That they are."
Finn chucked a bit.
"Don't be jealous Bayley. AJ Styles has this way with people."
Bayley huffed amused under her breath.
"Hm."
"Something wrong?"
"Huh? Oh no, just." Bayley pointed at her phone. "I think they are late."
"Oh." Finn checked his own watch. "You are right."
At the same hour too?
"I haven't even noticed. It's been so nice talking to you Bayley"
Bayley felt her ears prickle with heat.
"Ah, yeah. Me too, I mean you too."
"Let's wait a bit more? I am waiting for a call or a text from them, but so far nothing."
"Yeah."
Another half an hour later, after discussing wrestling matches they watched and when Bayley tried not to laugh too hard when Finn was talking about AJ Styles's hair secret, she finally had to admit that she was stood out.
"That's reprehensible," Finn said.
Bayley waved it off.
"I am actually relieved. Blind dates are awkward." She said finishing her coffee.
"Maybe," Finn admitted reluctantly. "But is still rude."
Bayley shrugged.
"You were stood up too. I mean, who would dare?"
"Yes."
Bayley looked at her phone again. It was almost seven now.
"Hey....did you have any plans after...uh this date?"
"Hmm, not really. Why?"
Bayley sighed and opened her purse and took out two movie tickets.
"So I...me and my date, we were supposed to go to the movies after coffee, but..." She slid the tickets across the table. "Since that's not happening, do you wanna help me use these?"
Finn looked over the tickets.
"Oh!"
"What?"
"I really wanted to see this movie."
"Huh? Really?"
"Yes, but...should I? It's not for me."
Bayley snorted.
"It is now." She said and packed the tickets back in her purse
"Come on. The theater is close." She stood up and waited for Finn to follow her out of the café.
Finn really liked the movie.
He went out of the theatre with a certain spark in his eyes which Bayley found incredibly amusing, considering Finn was a very reserved and distanced person and all his displays of emotions were very subtle, subdued even.
"Thanks, Bayley, I had a great time."
"No problem." She answered sheepishly and for a moment felt as subtle awkwardness settled between them. She could sense that Finn was ready to say his goodbyes and head to whatever other activities he planned.
"Do you-" She started when Finn opened his mouth to speak. "-want to grab something to eat?"
Finn was silent for a moment before he nodded with a slight smile.
"Sure."
They took a bus back to their campus and headed to the nearest cafe since it was the closest and relatively empty even at this hour.
They continued their conversion casually and Bayley finally got the courage to ask her pressing question.
"Say..." She paused munching on a fry. "Styles said, I mean I've heard Styles say that you guys used to play basketball in high school right?"
"Mhm." Finn hummed around his milkshake straw. "Correct."
"But you don't play anymore? Why?"
Finn was silent for a long while and only spoke when Bayley was about to tell him to forget the question.
"I do play...in my spare time. I just don't feel...I want to put myself on the court like that. And I don't want to repeat certain...events."
"What events?" Bayley blurted out before she could stop. Finn smiled, maybe a bit sadly.
"I'll tell you one day."
"I uh, okay. Sorry. Didn't mean to be nosy."
Finn shook his head.
"It's fine. I will tell you. I want to."
Something about the way he said it made Bayley blush, and to hide it she took a bite of her burger. The more she spent time with Finn the more she got aggravated at the person who stood up to this man. They must have been a real ass. Who would dare to stand up to the one and only Finn Balor? Every girl's fantasy. Bayley wished she could meet them and punch them for it.
Well, okay maybe not punch, but at least give them a piece of her mind.
"So...I guess you wouldn't want to go and shoot some hoops with me?"
Finn looked at her intently, his green eyes clear and his gaze open.
"The gym is still open you know... and oh, I play basketball in my spare time. The privilege of having friends that loves basketball." She said with a shrug.
Finn opened his mouth and Bayley was fairly certain she was going to be rejected.
"Alright. Why not."
"Great!"
Finn smiled when he slipped out of his seat.
They went back to their apartments and Bayley packed a change of clothes as quickly as she could and bolted out of the door.
She was glad that her roommates were out, and she didn't have to explain to them why she wasn't on her 'date'.
Finn was closing his own door already.
"Styles said anything?"
Finn shook his head and hid his keys.
"He's staying at a friend tonight."
"Huh, okay."
The gym, as she predicted was almost empty, except for a few lone souls working out. The basketball court was completely clear.
They changed quickly and picked up a ball.
"Okay, show me what you've got."
Bayley dribbled the ball a few times and glanced at Finn. He seems lost and yet getting familiar at the court. Bayley wants to punch herself. What if he started remembering sad memories that he wants to forget? She's so insensitive.
Finn suddenly raised his hands asking for the ball. Bayley dribbled it two more times and passed it to Finn.
He glanced at the ball and smiled at it.
They spend almost two hours at the court and after getting shocked at how amazing Finn was. She seems disappointed that he's no longer playing basketball because he seems a pro in this field. She'll pay money just to see him playing basketball with a smile again.
He was so damn cool.
"Thank you," Finn said, his words muffled by the towel he used to wipe his face. If Bayley didn't know better he'd think he was blushing.
He wanted to say something more but then the guard barged in the changing room and told them to get lost.
They walked leisurely to their apartment building, chatting and laughing at dumb things.
"Your dunk was amazing, Bayley," Finn said suddenly when they arrived at the entrance of the building and Bayley fumbled with her keys.
Finn caught them easily.
"I, uh thanks," Bayley mumbled and opened the front door.
They took the stairs, for some reason, instead of the elevator.
"Thank you," Finn said and turned to Bayley all formal as if it was an actual date.
"Yeah, don't mention it. Me too."
They stood in silence for a moment, not really keen on separating just yet.
Finn made a slight move suddenly, but Bayley didn't know if it was forward or backward. She also moved and wrapped Finn in a quick hug. It was long enough for her to be able to feel Finn's barely there surprised gasp, as it puffed over his neck and she could smell his shampoo.
"Sorry." She said when she pulled away, quicker than necessary and not giving Finn any chance to react properly. "Force of habit." She said, putting the blame on her hugging habits.
Finn clutched the strap of his bag and now Bayley could clearly see that he was blushing. Uh-oh.
But Finn barely nodded and smiled at Bayley again, his pale lips curling up more than before.
"Goodnight."
He said and opened his door as quietly as he could.
Bayley stood there for a moment, throwing her keys up and catching them for a moment before she decided it was time to also head to bed.
She was glad her roommates were asleep though, and couldn't see her dumb grin.
xoxoxoxox
"So." Sasha started when she sat down to eat her breakfast. She had a very sly and self-satisfied smile on her face, which annoyed Bayley. "How was the date?"
Bayley munched on her cereal and leveled her best friend with a bored/annoyed stare for a couple of moments.
"There was no date." She finally said and put another spoon full of lucky charms in her mouth.
Sasha blinked a few times, utterly confused.
"What? What do you mean?"
"What I said." She swallowed and licked her lips and reached for her coffee cup. "They didn't show up."
She shrugged while she took a sip.
"B-but...I saw you!"
Bayley put the cup away and frowned.
"You saw me?"
"With Finn 'Every girl's dream, wish and fantasy' Balor. You were saying goodbye."
"Oh. Yeah." Bayley said and stirred her cereal with a spoon. "I met him at the cafe by accident." She said and put another portion of cereal in her mouth. "Apparently Styles set him up too, but he was also stood up."
Sasha was staring at Bayley in silence.
"So we decided to go to the movies and then to eat and finally we went to play basketball." She ate the last of the lucky charms. "He's really amazing! You should've seen how amazing and yet nerve-wracking to see him playing basketball while smiling! I think it's something that he enjoys. So much. Wish he was still playing so he could join the Uni team."
Bayley paused. Imagining Finn Balor in their University's basketball jersey.
"So yeah. No date, but I still had a good time I guess. By the way? Not cool standing up your 'blind date'."
Sasha only blinked but didn't say anything.
"Okay say something." She finally got fed up with Sasha's strange behavior.
Her best friend blinked again and then Bayley saw how her mouth twitched.
Before she knew she burst out laughing.
Bayley stared as Sasha laughed herself silly and finally abandoned all pretenses and just put her head on the table.
"Ooooo-kaaay." Bayley muttered.
Sasha was still giggling. She was laughing so much she had tears in her eyes.
"Okay, will you tell me what's so funny?"
"You...." Sasha tried to catch her breath between bouts of laughter. "I never would expect...but I should have...oh man." She couldn't finish her sentences and it was annoying Bayley to no end.
"Make some sense, Sasha."
It was five minutes later when Sasha stopped laughing, except for an occasional giggle escaping him. She was pink from laughing and her eyes were red-rimmed because she actually cried herself stupid.
"Bay." She started while playing with a napkin. "I thought you'd know."
"You thought I'd know what? Stop talking in a damn code."
"Finn was your date."
Bayley almost choked on her coffee.
"What?!"
Sasha sighed like a disappointed parent.
"Well, AJ Styles saw it first. Then casually told Becky about it. You know how close Becky and I right? And then there was a time we saw how you two make doe eyes at each other, but you two are too shy...well you're shy, Finn is way too polite, to just ask each other out so we did it for you."
Bayley was struck silent. She had a suspicion about this for the briefest of moments, but she didn't dare acknowledge. But now it made sense actually. How Finn appeared just before her date was supposed to, how they were both set up at the same time, at the same place (which was far away from the campus so they wouldn't meet anyone they knew, and how Bayley wouldn't have any suspicions).
Even the damn movie tickets!
"I guess in a way we did succeed." Sasha mused. "You didn't know you were both on a date, but it worked out. The only thing which was missing was a kiss." Sasha mused and then looked at Bayley.
"Or did you? Kiss I mean."
"No!" Bayley yelled scandalized, finally out of her daze. Her face felt like it was on fire.
"Well, then you need to make up for it."
"Why would I!" Bayley wanted to throw her mug at Sasha. She was so embarrassed.
"Because you like each other." Her best friend said matter-of-factly.
Bayley wanted to protest, but then Sasha's phone rang.
"Oh, it's AJ!"
Bayley looked horrified at Sasha and wanted to fling herself across the table to grab her phone but she was too late. She didn't even know what she'd succeed with it, since AJ Styles, and Finn by extension, lived just across the hall.
Oh fuck, they were neighbors.
She would never live down the humiliation.
When Sasha answered the phone, Bayley could hear AJ's laughter mixed with complaints as clear as if he was in their kitchen.
"I know." Sasha laughed into the receiver and shot Bayley an amused glance.
She never hated her best friend, as a matter of fact, Sasha is the human she loves the most in this world, but now she was kind of fed up with her at this moment.
She was about to rip the stupid phone from her hand and throw it into a wall when she heard her own ringing.
She found it, despite Sasha's loud screeching, and saw Finn's name on the display.
Shit, shit, shit.
"Um, he- ow!" He yelped when he was assaulted again by AJ's loud voice.
"I'm sorry Bayley." Finn's voice cut through the noise and Bayley felt her face flame up anew and her heart beating frantically.
There was shuffling for a moment and AJ's voice was suddenly muffled.
"I'm sorry for AJ. He gets very excited." Finn's voice echoed slightly. He was probably in the bathroom.
"Uh, yeah it's fine. Wait." She said and stole a glance at Sasha. She was too busy laughing, sitting at Charlotte's expensive couch.
Bayley went into her room and closed the doors softly.
"Yeah, I'm back." She said awkwardly.
Finn hummed and for a moment there was an awkward silence.
"I guess you've heard already," Finn said, tone polite and stiff. Bayley wondered if he was also blushing. He sounded a bit uncomfortable.
"Y-yeah. Sorry about Sasha. She has strange ideas."
"AJ does too," Finn added with a bite and Bayley laughed, feeling less tense.
It returned when Finn didn't say anything more.
"You know, this wasn't my...suggestion. She's such a prankster...sometimes...scratch that, most of the time...she just..." She was babbling.
"I uh."
"I know, Bayley." He said softly. Bayley blushed.
"It's not like that, you know. We barely know each other and I would never..." She would never what?
"Asked me out?" Finn asked. Bayley bit her lip.
Yes and no. Yes because she wanted to and no because she wasn't the type to just do it.
"Because I would." Finn suddenly said. Bayley had to take a second to process it.
"If I knew you'd want that is," Finn explained and cleared his throat softly as if he was about to say something, but he didn't.
"Finn," Bayley said after a moment of long silence.
"Yes?"
"Do you...I mean...if you want...we can...I have." God, why was this so hard? They both wanted to and they were already on a date, for crying out loud? Well, technically. This would be probably considered a proper first date. If it happened that is.
"Do you want-"
"Yes."
"You didn't even let me finish!" Bayley bristled.
"You were taking too long." She could hear a pout in Finn's voice.
"Well, you don't even know what I was going to suggest!" She scoffed. His face was probably glowing right now.
"I don't care," Finn said and sighed. "I agree to whatever you propose Bayley. I just want it with you."
Bayley almost dropped her phone.
"Don't say shit like that!"
"Why?"
"Because it's embarrassing!"
"Ah. I see." He mused and Bayley could sense that he was smirking.
She glared at her phone as if Finn could see it.
"You're a little shit you know that."
Finn laughed, clear and too sweet.
"When then?"
"Uh...tomorrow?"
"Why not today?"
Bayley was startled. So soon?
"Are you busy Bayley?" Finn asked a tone of apology in his voice.
She looked at the pile of homework she had to do over the weekend.
"Nah. Free as a bird."
"Good," Finn said and his voice made Bayley feel warm.
"Can...we go for breakfast?" Finn asked suddenly. "I don't feel like eating with AJ today."
"Sure." She agreed easily and was surprised how easily it flew out of her now.
"I'll be at your door to pick you up." He said.
"Alright. See you then." Bayley listened to Finn hanging up.
For a while, she sat in silence thinking and listening to Sasha's laughter in the living room. Apparently, she and AJ still weren't finished.
She hung her head with a sigh.
She really was going to have to thank her, didn't she?
