The sudden death of Jimin's father in a car crash had a significant impact on him and his mother, who hadn't been herself for a long time, and neither was Jimin. There were nights when both of them had slept poorly and cried. There wasn't a day when Jimin wondered why he had been taken away from him when he had loved him so much. It was simply cruel and unjust. He felt like being left alone and trapped in a bubble.
Jimin missed him dearly, but he knew the time would come when he eventually had to move on, knowing and accepting that his father didn't come back.
A few years after the car accident, his mum began to get better. The mourning and loss of her husband became less overtime, keeping the memories still in her heart. It made Jimin happy to see her getting better. It helped him to get better as well—he tried. Things weren't always working out as they should. Instead of finding friends, he made bullies. Life took an unexpected turn as he switched to high school. He was the outsider and quiet boy who didn't defend himself when he got picked on, simply trying to ignore the comments and stares.
One time, he came a bit earlier to class in his last year, going to his locker. Jimin hadn't even opened it before he was pushed against the cold metal. His head and muscles throbbed due to the caused pain. It wasn't helpful that the three boys that were looming over him were glaring at him. They pushed him harder against the metal as students gathered. No one interfered.
The boys just couldn't accept how timid and soft he was. They didn't shy away from showing it and calling him names or making fun of him. Knowing Jimin won't go against them, they continued to be mean to him. They called him names Jimin didn't want to acknowledge. He tried to let the words bounce off him, but everyone knew they could stick to one like blowflies.
Jimin had no friends to make matters worse, and he hadn't dared to tell his mum about what was happening at school. She was happy and stable in her life and didn't want to worry her. He had always wanted the best for her, even if it meant he'd have to let another person into his life to make her happy.
His mother told him a few months prior that she had been talking with this one man, and one conversation turned into a date. One date turned into a second date and a third date. Jimin pretended to be happy for her, feeling how it was tormenting him and evoking his worst fears. He held his tears back and smiled when he got to know the other person.
To be fair, he couldn't even be angry when he met the man. Jaehyung was anything but rude and arrogant. He was courteous and had taken the time to get to know Jimin and assure him that he really liked his mother. Jimin could only smile at him and accept that his mother had really found someone she liked, knowing that Jimin's father would always have a place in her heart forever.
At one point, it came up that he had a son, also the same age as Jimin. But he didn't think much about it, not expecting that Jaehyung and his son would move in with them. He tried to shake off the nagging feeling that came with it. Jimin had a split opinion about it. It could go both ways, considering he had never met him since he had lived with his mother in another city and would only come to visit his father on the weekends.
This semester, however, things were about to change. His son would move here and would even begin visiting his school. Jimin had mixed feelings about this day. He dreaded it, but there was also some hope that filled him. Maybe not everything had to become worse when Jaehyung was the definition of kindness?
A few weeks later, the time has finally come. Just in time for the start of school at the end of the holidays. His mother has asked him to tidy up his room and also to tidy up other rooms with him. The spare guest room they have in their house is rearranged and furnished for Jaehyun's son.
He bites his lip as he watches his mother, with a slight smile on her lips, move the new desk in the guest room, and then arrange the pillows and blanket properly on the bed. Is his mother that happy about it? Has she even met the son, or does she just assume that he would fit into the family?
"Mum... Is this," Jimin points to various decorations in the guest room and watches as she ties her shoulder-length hair into a ponytail, "Is this what you want? Are you sure?"
Jimin doesn't want to stand in her way to happiness, but making sure that she is sure what's about to change is only fair, no?
"I really am," she says honestly, eyes sparkling with determination. "Is it wrong? I know you might need more time to adapt and accept what's going on, but you and I know what we went through, and I finally feel ready to embrace new things and be open to changes again, and I hope you'll feel the same too. I think we deserve it."
"It's not wrong. I just want to make sure that you're truly happy, but you're right. I might need more time." Jimin's lips stretch into a soft smile. She's right. They do deserve happiness, but Jimin isn't sure if he's really ready for it. "I hope everything works out for us."
"It will." She smiles confidently and runs her fingers through his hair, placing a kiss on his head. "I love you. You'll always be my number one, alright? Nothing will change. I understand that it must be difficult to come to terms with the changes, but I'm glad that you try to embrace them, and that's all I want. You know I'll always be here for you."
Jimin buries his head in her neck and sighs. He closes his eyes and inhales her calming scent, having missed the feeling of comfort. "Thank you."
Together, they set up the rest of the room and prepare dinner when the doorbell rings. His mother hurriedly ran to the door and opened it. Jimin stands rooted to the spot in the kitchen with the cooking spoon, listening to Jaehyun's voice through the hallway.
Slowly, he switches the cooker flame to low and puts the cooking spoon aside. With hesitant steps, he strides into the hallway and glances at the door where Jaehyun is standing with a box, many more beside him at the doorway. His mother says something about 'welcome' and 'come in'. She helps him place the boxes in the hallway. As he approaches the door to help, Jimin doesn't really pay attention to their conversation until his mother asks where Jungkook is. Jimin's eyebrows furrow, and he raises his head now that he's reached the door, only for his gaze to fall on thin rosy lips, dark brown eyes and dark brown hair in a boba haircut. He sure is handsome.
The radiating confidence from the taller makes Jimin swallow with nervousness. He notices that Jungkook doesn't appreciate that he studies him, furrowing his eyebrows and eventually rolling his eyes at him, clearly annoyed.
"Ah, Jungkook! Good to see you again."
One can say his mother is more than happy to see him again, as she hugs him as far as the box in his arms allows. It also answers his question about whether she knows him already or not. It makes his mood turn sour that he seems to be the last one to meet him, but maybe it's better this way, seeing the immediate smile that replaces Jungkook's annoyed expression.
"Sweetie, can you help us with the boxes?"
"Sure, mum." Jimin bites out-in what sounds hopefully not a rude way-and suppresses the urge to walk back into his room and lock the door.
Jungkook's gaze then shifts from the mother to Jimin, and he doesn't miss the chance to bump into his shoulders as he follows his mum to his new room.
"Hey!" Jimin exclaims, frustrated that Jungkook's acting this way when he has done nothing. Jungkook doesn't turn around as he walks up the stairs, leaving Jimin standing at the door entrance with a mad expression.
Dinner is relatively quiet, with only their parents chatting. Jimin barely looks up during dinner, not willing to meet Jungkook's eyes. After dinner, Jimin doesn't see Jungkook come out of his room all evening, and Jimin is unsure how to interpret it. Returning from the bathroom, Jimin sits down on his bed when he hears Jungkook's door opening, followed by the sound of footsteps that vanish in the bathroom.

A/N: I'm sorry if I offend some, but many don't know about this, and I think here is a good place to say it.
It came to my attention that my stories are getting more and more silent readers recently, stepbrothers even before. I see a lot of people commenting but not voting (if they are even commenting, there are comments where I don't even know if they are badly meant or not). I just want to know the reason more people intend to become silent readers, because for an author, it's not about a fic being superior to others but receiving feedback that you liked a story. 🙈
A few years back, I used to think that it was because authors want fame or attention because I often read it from readers, but the more I got into writing I realised it was different and not like a lot of readers said.
Some people are afraid of commenting which I get, I used to be like this as well, or often didn't know what to comment, but for voting, you simply have to make one click on the star. I just want to encourage you a little. Because this has honestly let me feel like 'stepbrothers' has become a playground where people leave their horny and immature comments, but that's it (If you'd see all the comments you might think so too). And let me tell you one thing, reading lists, don't tell you anything. A person may add a book to their reading list, and it doesn't let an author know if they liked the story.
