ACT IIIย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย ย CHAPTER 20
( life is emotionally abusive )
EVELYN'S HEAD WAS POUNDING. Pounding so much she swore she could hear drums playing. That was until a screeching, ringing noise overtook anything else. She could barely make out sentences since they were muffled.
The blonde's vision went fuzzy, as if something was shielding over her eyesight. She tried moving her wrist, but they were shackled to what she assumed was a hospital bed. So were her ankles.
Mumbles escaped her mouth, yet she didn't realise she was trying to speak. Her throat badly hurt. Whenever she coughed, a sore sensation flooded down her oesophagus. Evelyn could make out a female wearing all white. She turned around and stood in front of the non-movable patient.
"Miss Mane, I'm Dr. Mist. I've been treating you for two days now." The Doctor began. Eve's hearing was slowly coming back to her, "You've experienced a concussion, head injury, damaged vocal chords, and a stab wound to the lower leg which we've treated."
"Where's-," Evelyn croaked out, "Where's Finnick?" She blinked a few times, causing the blurriness to disappear.
As the woman standing gave her a clearly fake, sad expression, Evelyn searched her surroundings. There were no windows or mirrors where she was, only white painted walls. She also noticed there were locks on the double doors.
"I'm sorry to say but Mr Odair is a rebel. You have been rescued by the Capitol while he is off somewhere with your friend Katniss Everdeen and other fugitives."
All she could do was let out a sigh of relief. Thank goodness he isn't trapped in the Capitol. Thank goodness he managed to escape.
But she didn't.
Evelyn looked beside her, only seeing an iv drip connected into her arm and the floor which is also white. There was nothing she could snatch with her teeth and attempt to stab the doctor with.
The leather restraints were firm around her skin, quite firm that they began digging into her. She struggled at moving, feeling weak whenever she tried. They must've dosed her with a batch of morphine.
Dr Mist cleared her throat, making Evelyn meet her eyes, "You'll be pleased to know we've also rescued Peeta, Johanna, and Enobaria. You can see them once I've done a check up on you."
Squeezing her eyes shut, Eve hoped this was a dream. That when she woke up, she'd be in Finnick's arms and away from this nightmare. But once her lids slowly opened, she was still there. A single tear drop fell down the side of her face.
The taste of metal coated her tongue. She swallowed thickly, fear rushing inside of her, "You- you say you've rescued me..." Evelyn began, the woman nodded, "but why am I tied up?"
"For your own safety." Her voice was patronising and demeaning. Evelyn wanted to punch her right then and there. She tried her best to remain calm, knowing the horrors of what the Capitol can do to her if she causes trouble.
Dr. Mist grabbed a small flashlight and widened Evelyn's eyes with her fingers. The light went diagonal then up and down. Soon, another doctor โ this one male โ entered.
Dr. Mist rambled about countless things for him to jot down on a clipboard. He held a needle in between his fingers, flicking the side as some liquid dropped out. His long, off-white coat treaded against the floor when he approached.
"I don't want that." Evelyn rushingly spoke, desperately attempting to move. The blonde woman struggled with her restraints and leaned herself further and further away.
"It's just a sedative while we transfer you too a different room." The man, who's named Dr. Lee, told. His tone was the same as Dr. Mists': uncaring.
Evelyn frantically shook her head, her whole body shaking, "No, no. Please. I don't want that!"
Dr. Lee nodded towards Dr. Mist, silently asking for help. The female doctor held down Eve while he injected the serum inside of her.
Her screams faded as the liquid shot through her veins and rushed to her brain.
Fogginess. That's all Evelyn could see. She shook her head sideways, hoping it'd somehow brush away the effects. Her eyelids closed and everything turned dark.
Finnick. I need Finnick. Those same thoughts jumbled inside her mind before she could no longer think.

Evelyn couldn't find any light through the skin of her eyelids. Her now free hands reached for her head and her knees went to her chest.
Once she brought herself to look, everything was distorted. As if someone with super speed was running. The room spun until she remembered where she was.
When she was laying on the cot, Eve wore a hospital gown. But now she's dressed in the exact clothes she wore in her games.
The black, baggy, waterproof trousers still had the rip in it from an arrow being plunged through the fabric. Her long sleeved top was smeared with old blood, nearly the colour of brown mud.
She had no socks or shoes on, feeling the icy, cold floor scrape against her feet. It sent shivers down her spine.
Another item missing was her jacket. But obviously that got binned straight away after using it to stop herself from bleeding out.
What a pathetic way to mess with someone. Although, Evelyn was about to panic, the ptsd kicking in. Luckily, someone began taking which distracted her.
"Evelyn?"
Eyes still full of wariness instead of the night stars, she slowly turned her head to the side. She couldn't recognise the voice but when she matched it too a face, Eve did.
"Peeta?" Oh my god, Peeta!" Evelyn spoke in relief. Her trembling hands went between the metal bars.
Peeta instantly grabbed her hand and held it, savouring every little bit of warmth she gave.
"Hey... Eve." His voice was drowsy. Worn out, "I'm glad you're-... you're awake."
A small light was placed in the centre outside the cells, as well as yellowness seeping through a window that's been built into the entrance and exiting doors.
Evelyn shifted herself so she could face the male from District Twelve, ignoring winces ready to escape her mouth by moving her leg.
The Capitol didn't bother using fancy cream on her. They just poorly stitched it up.
While Peeta seemed like he's falling asleep, Evelyn studied him. Bruises were swelling on the right side of his face, and dark bags sat under his eyes. His muscles turned smaller, and his nails were filled with skin and crimson red.
They've only been here for two days... or that's what the doctor told Evelyn.
"I can feel you staring." Peeta said, opening his eyes to find Evelyn weakly smiling at him, "I reckon I'm still better looking than Finnick."
The blonde woman stifled a chuckle, "Don't make me laugh, my ribs hurt enough."
Peeta's grasp on Eve's hand went firmer for a second, giving her an assuring squeeze.
"Peeta..." Evelyn dreadfully began, "What are they doing to you?"
He went to open his mouth, but no words poured out. Only short breaths. Swallowing thickly, he answered, "They're, um, they're using this sort of venom on me. Trackerjacker venom, I think. It's not been as bad, but I'm worried they're gonna change me."
"I won't let them." Evelyn shook her head. Guilt was slowly consuming her. Peeta shouldn't be here โ the plan was to get him and Katniss out.
"That's nice of you to say but I don't think you can do anything, not without being hurt anyway."
Realisation hit the blonde woman when she couldn't hear anyone else in the room. Only her and Peeta. She looked around and saw an empty cell that was next to her's, "Where's Johanna? And Enobaria?"
Before he could answer, the door swung wide open and two Peacekeepers entered, having ahold of a weakened Johanna. Evelyn and Peeta stayed silent โ although insanely worried โ and watched as the guards roughly shoved her into the free cell.
A clanging noise echoed around them as the cell locked. The Peacekeepers didn't even acknowledge the other Victor's and exited.
Evelyn let go of Peeta's hand, crawling her way towards Johanna. Water was dripping off the black-haired woman once she leaned against the wall.
"Jo?" Eve began, being wary of her mad expression.
All she did was hold her hand up before speaking, "Not now, Eve." She sighed and closed her eyes. Her whole body was rattling, as if she's been electrocuted...
The blonde woman understood. She knew Johanna needed silence for her thoughts, otherwise she'd explode. Evelyn sat herself against the cold, smooth wall, her leg's stretched out.
She went to fiddle with her bracelet that Finnick gifted her, but it wasn't there. Eve reached for her neck, only to find it bare. The necklace Ace gave her was gone.
Letting out a silent breath, Evelyn rested her head and looked up. Tears brimmed in her eyes but wouldn't allow any to fall down her cheeks. She had to be strong. She couldn't show the Capitol that deep down she's too soft for it all.
Most of all, Evelyn couldn't break in front of Peeta. Haymitch informed her a while back that through his Games, he admired her as a role model. He still does. If Peeta saw Eve cry, then he'd know there's no hope left.
