── their trope is almost forbidden, enemies to lovers, where matthias can only be with a fjerdan woman. though no matter their differences, they find their way back to each other whether they like it or not. at first, he strongly denies going against his beliefs and potentially falling for karina, then the other half of him wants to be with her because despite his situations, he often dreams of her, which surprisingly keeps him sane (depending on what he dreams about). 
── despite the tension between them, when they do get stuck together and have to travel through enemy territories, he gestures for karina to have the bed. and without a couch in the room, he offers to sleep on the floor as long as he can try to stay far away from her. the fact that in some neutral territories, playing pretend wife/husband, created endless tension and possible flutters. the feelings of that being very foreign for the both of them. 
── with karina's necklace, matthias is in disbelief that she has such a necklace that only his kind represents and has.  he might have thought at one point, she stole it as her own trophy for hunting druskelles.  he even denies believing that she's half fjerdan because she is associated with the enemy (grisha) and even has the face of one. 
── as much as he denies it, matthias often dreams about her.  whether it was imagining about her silky dark hair, her smooth skin, her scent, and the curve of her nose all the way to her lips.  he denies it so much that at some point it will be his breaking point when she eventually has to return back to ravkan territory, or whenever she is getting closer to her home.  he will most likely be the first to break the silence and admits that he starts a liking towards her. 
── as much as he dislikes her, he protects her from other fjerdan soldiers.  he knows his druskelle instinct should never trust nor protect a drusje, but his actions speaks louder than his words.  at some moments, karina catches him on a lie because of his heartbeat, though she never really speaks about it out loud.  there will be times where she does help matthias when he's hurt or wounded from either helping her or protecting her. 
── whenever they do slowly get along, they provide the littlest things for each other.  whether it may be fjerdan custom to gift the lady or give her some flowers or maybe offering a blanket to keep her warm.  karina appreciates his tiny gestures as hers were to provide care and comfort.
