โWE'RE FLUSHING THEM down the toilet."
"that we are."
"...press the flush, dom."
slowly, dominic hunches his body forward to press the flush, letting the two little bags be cast away from his life. as they stare in the ceramic bowl, suminar could feel a hand reach for hers and she grips it as tight as she can.
"you wanna go out today? we can go get food or something like that."
unfortunately, dominic couldn't perform at the festival that booked him at all. suminar didn't know this until max told her but when going through xanax withdrawal one typically gets a fever. meaning he only stayed inside all day trying to break it. and then what came with cocaine withdrawal was he was down. so down. she'd never seen him so upset โ the fact she couldn't do much either made her feel horrible aswell.
he was saying shit like her being there was enough but no it wasn't. it really wasn't. especially when she thought everything was fine and he didn't need checking up on and she noticed he looked not like his usual self at coachella but brushed it off. she felt like a terrible girlfriend.
he scratches his head awkwardly. "can it not be like aโ"
"we'll drive around, look for a- a really deserted diner that serves some bomb-ass milkshakes but food that could definitely give us a heart attack," she explains with a little hint of humour in her tone.
"i do love a greasy burger," he contends and she laughs breathlessly.
"uh huh. c'mon," she pecks his shoulder, "change outta these clothes."
she didn't wanna leave the bed untidy so she made it for him as he got ready. she didn't have a change of clothes but she told him she'd make a stop at a goodwill or something and pick up something else.
they'd been in that hotel room for around three days. long enough so dominic wouldn't feel sick anymore. she could feel everyone's frustration as well as their worry โ his assistant, jane, had been making call after call and so had his manager, reed.
all her meetings were luckily done on a zoom call with her laptop on the hotel balcony. granted, her mind was still fixed on catering to dominic's needs so she wasn't really too focused.
it's not like she felt he was a burden. 'cause she didn't. she did it all 'cause she loved him. and she didn't wanna see him curl up into a ball and kill himself. if being with him felt good to him, she'd be with him.
she just didn't like when he was upset. he made him... dickish. just like he told her. the car ride was in icy silence and she didn't enjoy that he wasn't enjoying himself.
she just wanted him to be okay. but he wasn't giving her any signs that he was. just... blankness.
they stopped infront of a goodwill, that was on the outskirts of town to get away from everyone like she promised. getting out of the car, she watches as he sluggishly does the same and they walk in together.
she looks around, spotting something she knew he'd be atleast somewhat interested in. using her heel to turn to her right, she looks at him before asking, "pick out a cd for me?"
he stares at the entertainment section she was just staring at before meeting her gaze again to nod his head a little. smiling sheepishly, she steps out of his way to look for something to wear.
she didn't take too long, spotting a really cute cropped tee and some flared jeans. he insisted on paying, but she didn't want to hear it. he gave her a little look up and down after seeing her in the outfit with a small tilt of his head which she was unfazed by as they walked out the store.
"what'd you choose?" she asks, regarding the cd.
he shows her the cover. off the wall by michael jackson. she shakes her head playfully as they get into the car.
"and not thriller?" she questions in almost disbelief since that was in fact the best album ever made.
"rock with you has that perfect blend of fusion funk and pop. like the ultimate hybrid," he starts, "also i think that's the first song i knew how to play."
she'd got him to talk more about the cd, music, things of that nature all the way to the restaurant. they sat at a booth in the back, where they felt they could be a little more shut off from the rest of the world.
she watches him look at the menu, eyes scanning the laminated paper intently. the little furrow of his eyebrows and the way his eyes moved across the sheet made her smile a little bit, eyes quickly darting down to read from her own menu. a waiter came over to take their orders, one so tall suminar had to crane her neck up to look at him, he jotted them down quickly before leaving to tell the chef, flashing a quick smile at her as he did.
"i hope you saw that."
dominic's voice, slightly judgmental, makes her look up at him from her phone and tilt her head. he loved being vague as shit with what he had to say; you always had to wait five seconds before he explained something. she grew to love it, honestly, made him all wondrous and stuff.
"bro was eye-fucking you," he tells her and she instantly gives him a blank, disapproving stare. he doesn't hesitate to return it either, and she kisses her teeth.
"i'm not even makin' a joke, though. he was staring at you like i'm not right here."
suminar's face turns a little sour, as she shyly stares down at her shirt. "he probably just liked my shirt."
"the shirt from goodwill you got for two dollars? mhm, very believable story, angel," he murmurs and he rests a hand in her palm, a bored expression on his face.
she squints, "you liked it."
"my point exactly. i like the way you wear it. the same way mr busboy over there did."
she decides it'd be better not to respond. since he'd probably want to make another petty argument about it. and she knew better than to fight him right now, so she just slumped back in her seat and looked around the almost-empty restaurant.
it was when the same waiter brought them their food, that he stared at her again. a little differently, intently almost. until he finally figured out where he'd seen her face.
"oh my God, you're band tee girl," he drawls out as he remembers. suminar flashes him a little sheepish smile, shrugging her shoulders as he continues, "you do that podcast right? the one with the- the t-shirts? yo, that shit is so. funny."
"thankyou so much," she smiles kindly at him, "i mean- i- i try, y'know."
"yes you do," he contends, "you're mad creative with 'em. makes sense you're nominated for that streamy award right?"
"oh, fucking blow me..." dominic mumbles under his breath and shoves a fry in his mouth and a tiny tiny part of suminar hoped that fry would block his voice box so he would not talk for the next couple minutes.
"aren't you like- modelling too?" he says with enthusiasm and she can't help but get a little flustered. not in a flirtatious way, in a bashful way. and nervous way โ modelling talk always made her nervous now.
"hopefully i will. i have my first show next week."
"exciting. i mean, it makes sense you're modelling. look at you, y'know."
oooooh, you shouldn't have said that, brodie. she thinks to herself. the first thing she does is dart her eyes over to her boyfriend, who was visibly tense. all he was doing was looking at the waiter, and if looks could kill... well fuck, dominic would be fully comfortable doing it with his own hands.
"i'm sorry, and thank you, but- i hope i didn't give you the wrong idea or anything, i'm here with my man right now soโ"
"so, move the fuck on. don't you got more people to serve?"
she was wishing the ground could become quicksand again. but again, people don't die from quicksand she'd still have to face this situation. oh Lord, why did it have to be her in this situation?
"excuse me?"
"excuse me," dominic mocks before quickly standing up. it's funny because he wasn't even that tall, especially compared to the waiter's height, but he still takes a step back, "you could clearly see that she was with somebody. she was holding my hand when we walked in. excuse me, you were excused the moment you saw us both."
"okay," suminar gets up also, walking up to her boyfriend and placing a hand on his chest, "why don't we just bag our food up and take it to the car? we can just eat in the car!"
dominic quickly starts shaking his head, trying to move past her body. "nah, baby, i wanna hear what he had to say. c'mon, bro, tell her what the fuck else you had to say, i fuckin' dare you!"
"dominic, dom. seriously? seriously." she calls his name a couple times and after giving the waiter a stare strong enough for him to back up even more, he finally meets her eyes.
her very angry and disappointed eyes.
"thankyou so much for letting us eat here," she turns back to the waiter and gives him an apologetic smile, then turns to everyone back of house who was watching everything go down, "i am so sorry."
she grabs dominic's arm as well as the food and quickly hurls both their bodies out the restaurant. her hands fiddle with her car keys so much they come to the ground and she curses under her breath before finding them and opening the car door.
they drove in silence. back to square one. and it's not like she wanted to feel fucking pissed off about what just happened but she was. she was. she just wanted him to feel okay, but it didn't feel like she was doing anything right. and he wasn't giving her anything to go on. she felt stuck, and all that does is bring about frustration.
"i just- i dunno why you did that." she finally speaks up. maybe if she talks, she'll get something back.
"did what? stopped myself from potentially getting cucked 'cause i'd say i saved myself some embarrassment."
"c'mon, i mean... that," she emphasises, "i just wanted to take you out since we haven't been out since i drove down here! why couldn't you just- cooperate with me?"
"you didn't have to come here. you didn't have to do anything."
okay, she could crash this car in a minute. ofcourse, the last thing she wanted was to start a fight. but he was acting way too vain considering the situation they both were just in. call her wrong for it, but she wasn't taking disrespect.
"but i'm here! i'm here now. so what do you want? 'cause you've said it. it's come from your own mouth that you need me so stop swinging your dick around and put it back in your pants. you're causing a draft."
"i just don't wanna be coddled."
"and who says i'm coddling you?"
"you've been so fuckin' cautious around me since you got here. like i'm fragile or something," dominic runs a hand over his face in agitation. so he's already over the situation he caused? funny.
"well... obviously. i've never had a situation where i've had- i've had to be with..."
"someone like me? cool." he purses his lips as he looks out the window.
"someone with an addiction, dom," she glances at him from keeping her eyes straight on the road, "you know i don't think you're a fucking martian."
"you don't have to say shit when it's so easy to fucking feel." he spits, making her completely halt the car.
they were quite literally in the middle of nowhere at this point, where human life (and also possibly clean water) were not for miles ahead. regardless, she had some sort of point to prove. what it was, she couldn't even tell you. there was just a point, alright.
ignoring his protests, she unbuckles her seatbelt and gets out of the car, ferociously stomping so the car would eventually be in bleak distance.
"where are you going? ain't shit to do in manchester!" he shouts after opening his side of the car and lifting his body out.
"right now i'm away from you so it's already some shit!" she screams back.
in the middle of walking away, she stops suddenly. she realised that she couldn't just leave; it was stupid. she couldn't leave him nor could she leave the car she was to drive home in that same night on a random street in the middle of nowhere, tennessee.
she breathes deeply and harshly, the fresh air aiding the fucking headache she was given. granted, he was not the headache; he was never the headache. the way he was treating her was.
the scowl feels permanently etched into her skin as she trudges back to the car, the sun once again irritably hot. she opens her car door and sits in the driver's seat, only seeing him through her peripheral vision. from the single (scarce) glance she gives him, she saw his hand was covering his face.
if she leaned any harder against her side of the door, she'd probably break through it and fall out. but she thought she was allowed to be petty. a tiny bit.
"i'm not doing it anymore, dom, i'm not doing this." she states very clearly.
"not doing 'this'? what- you... you wanna break up?"
"don't be an idiot, i'm fucking inlove with you. that tiny distance i just walked away from youi felt like i was fucking suffocating," she spits before groaning in agitation, running her hands over her face.
"you're not gonna be an asshole to me. 'cause i was never a bitch to you. i don't give a fuck about- anything other than how we treat eachother," she states, making sure her tone was as compelling as she could make it.
dominic quickly shakes his head, leaning over the console so he was a bit closer to her, mumbling slowly now, "and all i care about is you. i'm- i'm sorry for how i was today, i just- y'know what i'm not gonna make any excuses... but i'll be better. i'll try. 'cause i know what i have in you and i can't lose that."
she looks at him through her peripheral, still staring straight forward. "i can't be around you if you do drugs. i can't watch you hurt yourself, i'm inlove with you," she says, her voice coming out in a small mumble.
"angel, can you look at me? can you look at me, please?" cautiously, dominic's hand, the hand covered in the ink she touches her lips with before he goes to bed, goes to cup her cheek very slowly and with a couple blinks, she obliges.
"i'm not touching anything. anything ever again. i'll find other ways to cope andโ"
"we will," she sheepishly interrupts him and he sighs, with a smile.
"we will. that whole- thing with the waiter, i'll- i don't even do shit like that anymore, it's out of character for me. i'm sorry i acted that way," he apologises.
after a moment, her head turns to the side so she can press a kiss into his palm, a small smile revealing itself afterwards. it was then he reaches over to plant a small kiss on her lips too. one that made her hug him a little bit harder, just so she could feel him, get all she could in her nerves and even turn it wouldn't be enough.
she knew all this would take work, she never expected this relationship to be all the way easy, but she believed she had the best team partner for miles. it didn't have to be so hard either.
