1. The Missing Boy โ˜†

TW - MENTIONS OF SH AND SUICIDE - If anyone wants to talk, I'm always here. I promise. Please don't keep it to yourself. Some of these things are things that I deal with as well, don't be afraid to talk to me. Please note that I don't enjoy writing things like this, it's just for Harpers Character development.

November 7 1983

There was nothing that Harper Melborne hated more than school. Sure - most people hated school, but Harper hated it. According to her it was the most useless thing on the planet. The teachers were assholes who 'hated kids'. There were only some that actually liked their job. Another thing Harper hated was the alarm clock that her dad had gifted her before her parents divorced. She loved her dad, until he left in the summer of '76. It's been 7 years since he left and almost a year since she saw him. Anyway, every time that stupid alarm rang, she questioned every single life decision she ever made. She was still asleep as the alarm rang, too far into the deep sleep for the sound to bring her out of it, until her stupid brother came barging in, making the blonde jump up.

"HARPER! GET YOUR ASS UP! You're gonna be late!" Her brother, Chase Melborne yelled out in annoyance, slamming her door behind him. It was very well known that Harper didn't care if she was late, after her dad went to go live with another woman and her kids, her attendance went down. Fast. She often blamed herself for her parents divorce, she would hear them shouting at each other when she was supposed to be asleep, and they were talking about her. She didn't have the best relationship with her mother, Katherine Melborne but Harper still loved her.ย  She wasn't like this before coming to Hawkins believe it or not Harper was the sweetest girl but after the accident in California, she changed, and it wasn't good.ย

Her tutor, Mrs Greene was a nice old lady, she was probably the only one that saw potential in Harper, all the other teachers gave up on her. Most people did. Harper liked Mrs Greene, she loved her actually. Harper appreciated her constant presence. When the others left, Harper almost gave up too..but Mrs Greene kept her around.

The blonde girl eventually dragged herself out her bed, immediately feeling the tiredness wave over her. she had dark bags under her eyes, her eyelids could literally close and she'd be asleep. She didn't get much sleep last night as usual, her overthinking had kept her awake until eventually she fell asleep for an hour or two. (TW) Her left arm hurt like hell as her wrist was covered in previous white strips she had created and regretted immediately.

No one knew about her self harm, not even Mrs Greene and Harper told her everything. She wasn't gonna tell anyone, like ever. She hated that feeling of people worrying about her and every time Harper thought about her life she would always tell herself to shut up and say "other people have it worse."

She didn't have the 'perfect' life and she "hated" people who did. She always felt some kind of jealousy towards them but she kept her feelings hidden, knowing that her life would end up more of a mess. One of her best friends, Nancy had the perfect life, straight A's, Nice family and she's got a boyfriend who happens to be the most popular boy in school and Harper's brothers best friend.

Steve "the hair" Harrington.

Harper has had boyfriends in the past most of them didn't work, the last one was when she lived in California and she was dating the bad boy. Billy Hargrove. They broke up when Harper and her family moved to Hawkins, Indiana. It was good for her to get away from him. Sometimes she missed him. Until she remembered what happened and she didn't miss him anymore.

The only people that kept her here was her friends, Nancy Wheeler, Barb Holland or "Barbara" and her best friend, Evie Jones or "Ev" as Harper liked to call her. Her friend group had very different personalities, but they liked having a group with different types of people. Like Nancy and Barb were the smart ones and the sensible ones and Evie and Harper were the 'trouble makers." The two had met in kindergarten when Harper was getting laughed at by some kids until Evie noticed and came over and punched one of them straight in the nose. They were best friends from then on.

Harper's younger sister, Ashley Melborne or 'ash' as she liked to go by was another person who kept Harper around. Ash was definitely Harpers number 1 fan, She loved her brother... When he wasn't being a complete asshole, the three of them had fun as siblings. She could remember the three laughing with each other in Chase's room, jumping around on his bed while blasting music through the radio. But behind his door was their parents fighting. Again. Chase heard, looking to his two sisters who were laughing still. From then on he made the decision to protect them even if it takes his own life. He took a step to the radio which sat on top of his wooden desk, twisting the knob turning up the music. Making it inaudible to hear the two adults in the kitchen.

You could definitely tell that the three, Harper, Chase and Ashley were siblings from their similar personalities, All three had a least punched someone in the face. Harper got in the most fights though, her brother only threw a punch when necessary and her sister only threw one when she was annoyed. Harper on the other hand, 'felt like punching someone' sometimes she had a reason but most times just because she wanted to. This was her way of 'getting her feelings out.'

The time was 7:45 and school started at 8:00. Harper was no where near ready but she obviously didn't care. She threw on her black jeans with red stars on the back, her curves fitting perfectly. A red lace v-top that tied around the back of her neck. For a jacket her favourite black leather jacket she got for her 16th birthday. She wore the jacket everywhere, with every outfit. For shoes her black and white laced converse. She wore silver hoop earrings and a few necklaces and a ring she got from her mother. She usually didn't wear makeup apart from concealer, mascara and eyeliner, she would put the eyeliner just below her waterline, making her blue eyes pop.

Her brother shouted for her to be ready, making her groan, grabbing her bag. Before walking out her room, shutting the door behind, remembering to quickly grab one waffle her sister was having, who rolled her eyes with a grin, muttering a quick bye. Chase was waiting in the car for her, it was almost 8, he placed his hand on the horn, making the sound blast through to the house.

"I'M COMING, jeez hold your horses." Harder shouted, walking to the car before getting in the passenger seat. Chase starts to drive with music playing on the radio, Harper pulled down the mirror, brushing her blonde curls. Popping in a quick mint, while her brother tapped his finger to the music on the wheel. It was only a 15 minute drive to school, when they arrived it was 8:20.

Chase went to class, which was English lit while Harper wandered the halls before going into the bathroom, she had Maths and she was definitely not going, Mr Davies was shit, and "fucking annoying" according to her, as Harper pulled out her pack of cigarettes. She only smoked to take her mind of things, which was quite often. She usually shared her cigarettes with her best friend, Evie. She had started smoking around the start of 15, a few years after the divorce. Fortunately for her, the window near the sinks was open, letting out the smoke from her lit cigarette. She sat down on the toilet, letting her thoughts flood her mind as she thought back to her father. Grabbing her Walkman out of her bag, putting the headphones around her head and immediately playing "Hazy Shade Of Winter" by The Bangles.

To Harper music was her escape, her only chance to find freedom, it was like her therapy. When shit went down, play music. Her room was filled with vinyls and she even got her very own red record player for her 15th birthday. She loved her room, it was her comfort space.

Her dad practically raised Harper on music, and that's why she loved it so much. She remembers listening to music with her dad in the kitchen, both of them singing and laughing. She missed her childhood, unfortunately for her she had to grow up quickly, when Ashley was born it was only a few years later that her dad would leave so she and her brother had to take care of her while her mom worked her ass off, she was a waiter at a diner in town, it was shit pay, but atleast it gave them something. Her brother had a job too, at one garage shop in the center of Hawkins. He didn't work often as it had hardly any customers.

The cigarette eventually ran out as Harper put her Walkman away in her bag, unlocking the stall door, remembering to throw the cigarette out the window, before turning to the mirror. Her long blonde hair was knotty, her concealer was not fully blended and her eyelashes weren't good.

The door for the bathroom opened, slightly banging against the wall making a bang sound. A black haired girl walked up to the blonde, near the sinks. It was Evie.

"Harper! I've been looking for you. Where were you in maths?" The girl exclaimed, turning to face the blonde girl who was brushing her hair, before turning back to the mirror.

"I was here." The girl shrugged. "I'm too tired to deal with Mr "shithead" Davies, at 9am on a Monday." The black haired girl nodded in return, agreeing with the blonde.

"Did you see the news? About that boy?" The girl exclaimed, turning back to the girl, raising her eyebrows slightly.

"No, what happened? What boy?" The blonde replied obviously confused.

"A boy went missing last night, a boy called....I think...bill? No, wait...Will?...what was his last name? something that begins with b." The raven haired girl, Evie tried to remember the news from last night, she didn't know the boy, she didn't know Harper knew him.

Harper turned to the girl who stood next to her, her mouth dropping slightly as a name popped into her head....a name she was familiar with. A name she had grown to know. Will Byers. She desperately hoped it wasn't him, but a feeling swam up her body. And it wasn't a good feeling.

"Will Byers?..." She uttered, hesitantly.

"Yes that's it! Will Byers...It's Jonathan Byers brother..." The girl's voice faded out as the blonde turned to the mirror, staring deep in her eyes, her eyebrows narrowed, her eyes sunken.

The Byers were a family friend, they were the first ones they knew when coming to Hawkins. She loved them, she loved Will. He was like a younger brother, She couldn't imagine losing her sister who was the same age as Will. She couldn't imagine how Jonathan was feeling, he was her friend. He is her friend. He may be 'weird' or a 'creep' but to her he wasn't like that. He was different.
