19| TELL ME YOU'RE LYING
"You know, if someone would have told me i'd be sitting in a jail cell with Josephine Findlay, i'd probably had laughed in their face." Topper spoke, leaning on the right side of the jail cell. Across the way, Joey was in another one on the left side. She was trying to hide her smile. "I'd have definitely laughed in their face, actually."
"Well, it wasn't necessary ideal for me either." she said honestly, looking his way for the first time. "My summer plans didn't consist of even knowing you."
"Just yelling at me while picking up trash together?" he asked, getting a nod of her head. "Sounds about right."
Rain poured outside, Joey could hear it. The rest of the cells were empty, the two they had been in the only ones occupied this evening. Most of the police were out looking for John B and Sarah, making the station oddly quiet. Joey leaned on her knees. "Topper?"
He leaned on the bars. "Yeah?"
"Thanks for getting arrested for me." she said, staring over at him. "Or, for Sarah, whichever one, you really helped me out."
"Well, I wasn't gonna just let you go to jail on your own." the blonde said back with a minor shrug, his eyes shiny and bright. He was such a basic looking guy, Joey had seen so many people like Topper before. Yet, he still was really beautiful to look at. "If you get arrested for your ex, I get arrested for mine."
Joey gave a low laugh. "New catch phrase."
"Put it on a billboard." he cracked a grin. "Maybe even make a commercial."
"Next thing you know Harry Styles is gonna go to jail for Taylor Swift." she said in return, earning a laugh. "That would make you Cara Delevingne going to jail for Ashley Benson."
"So, just to make it clear, Taylor Swift and Ashley Benson are running from the police right now?" Topper asked with a questionable look.
"She didn't write Are We Out Of The Woods for no reason." Joey shrugged, making Topper laugh again.
"I can get behind that." he confirmed, nodding his head. His touched at the bars on the cell. "Hey, you remember that night?"
Joey met his eye as he went on. "When Kelce and his boyfriend came over?"
Joey swallowed. "Yeah, I remember."
"Did you mean what you said?" Topper looked at her curiously, one of his legs outreached infront of him.
"When I said you just wanted to use me for a joke?" Joey asked, her hands swinging over her knees. Topper nodded. "Maybe. At the time, yeah. But, I don't know, I kinda get the vibe you like having me around."
Topper gave a knowing look. "Yeah, I do."
"Where you at Kelces house when John B was there?" the Findlay girl narrowed her eyes in questioning.
Topper hesitated. "Yeah."
Joey tilted her head. "Do you think he honest killed the sherif?"
"What? You don't?" he asked her with questionable eyes.
"No." Joey spoke up immediately. "I know for a fact he didn't."
"You really think it was Rafe?" Topper rose his eyebrows in disbelief.
Joey laughed in disbelief. "And you don't? Seriously? You don't think Rafe is capable of murder?"
"He's my friend." Topper shook his head at her.
"And John B is mine." she said back nearly immediately. It was silent a second, the pair breaking eye contact. "This is exact why we wouldn't work as friends."
"I know." Topper agreed with an exhale.
"I'm glad you know." she sassed his way immediately with a look of disbelief. "I also know how privileged you are for getting to walk around being friends with your rich bitch, Rafe Cameron. Of course you don't think he'd do something like that. No, because it's never the asshole Kooks that do anything because they fit society's standards."
"Why is it you always blame the Kooks? You don't think it's ever the Pogues, do you?" Topper argued, they got to their feet on sync. "You're just as bad. Always ready to blame the other side of the island."
"No, that's were you're wrong, Top." Joey tilted her head when she spoke in anger. "I can admit when my people make a mistake. Only issues is we always get the blame and the finger pointed at us because we don't live on Six Figures and ride around in a 24MXZ."
"Oh, oh okay, you mean the same boat your friend and brother sunk?" Topper shot her way in disbelief.
"Yeah, that o-" Joey started, stopping as she saw his face redden. "What did you just say?"
Topper rubbed his hands on his shorts. "I said the ones your friends sunk."
"No, you said my brother." Joey rolled her eyes. "Do you think Pope and I are related because we're both black? Are you kidding me?"
"What? No!" Topper shot back quickly. "I wasn't even-"
"Joey!" it was Kie, yelling from the front.
"Kie?" Joey whispered, leaning on the bars. "Kiara!"
"Let her go. Let her know what you caused!" Kie was yelling at someone, someone Joey wasn't complete sure of. She saw Shoupe as he walked toward her, keys in hand.
"What's she talking about, Shoupe? You shoot him?" Joey looked in a panic as he unlocked the cell. "Huh? Answer me."
"Joey, be with your friends." his voice broke, and his eyes were sad.
Joey looked in disbelief, turning and hurrying toward the front to find Kie. "Kie. What's wrong? Where are the boys?"
She had been crying, that much was clear. Joey had the worst feeling, the absolutely gut stabbing feeling. A chill ran over her entire body, shaking her head. "Where's John B?"
"He didn't make it." she was crying again, trying to keep it together. "Him and Sarah road out into the storm. He didn't make it, Jo."
"What?" Joeys voice came out weak, shaking her head. "No. No. No he didn't. He's fine."
"He's not." Kie shook her head, crying. "He's gone. Both of them."
Joey squeezed her fist by her side, shaking her head fast. "No. No. No! No, there's no way! Not John B! Not John B! No!"
Kie tried to grab her, Joey was fighting against her. "No! No, he's not dead! John B isn't dead. There's not- no, he can't be. Kie. Kie. Tell me- tell me you're lying. Tell me he's n-"
Joey couldn't breath, Kie holding her tightly as her legs got weak, nearly hit the ground. "No. No! John B can't be dead! He can't be dead! No!"
Kie cried into Joeys neck as she held her tightly, Joey on the floor as her curls stuck to her teary face. "No. John B."
Topper grabbed ahold of the bars when he heard the sobbing coming from the front, Shoupe hadn't moved, his eyes shut. Joey cried as Kie held her. "No. No. No. No. John B."
