Chapter thirty-eight - Tired
Newt, Minho, and Thomas walked into the med-hut to take a look at that girl, while I sat down next to Logan. He was sitting against a tree on his own.
'You okay?' Logan looked at me.
'Yeah,' I replied. I was okay. I didn't get hurt in the maze and I was just a little tired because I hadn't slept in twenty-four hours. 'Are you?'
'Yes.' Logan laughed. Both of us were silent for a while.
'So, do you think I can be a Runner now?' I asked.
'You still want to be one?'
I nodded in response.
'You don't think the maze is scary after you've been in there for a while shuckin' night?'
'No, not really,' I answered.
'Surprising.' Logan responded. He actually seemed shocked by it.
'Do you think it's scary?'
'Sometimes.' Logan shrugged. 'I'd rather not get trapped in there. And I'd rather not have you trapped in there again. Newt wasn't the only one who was worried.'
I was flattered by his worry about me. 'I won't get stuck again, but I still want to be a Runner.' I let out a chuckle.
'I'll see what I can do for you.'
'Thanks.' I smiled lightly.
'Are you hungry?' Logan asked. The worry was noticeable in his voice.
'A little,' I responded.
'Well, let's get you some food then.' Logan got up and motioned for me to walk with him. 'Hey, Fry. Can you get Nora some food, please?'
I noticed that Logan talked more and had more friends than before.
'Of course.' Frypan grabbed a plate and put some food on it. 'Here ya go.'
'Thanks.' I grabbed the plate out of his hands and together me and Logan walked to an empty table. We sat down across from each other and I started eating, slowly.
'Did you already eat?' I asked.
'Yes,' Logan replied.
I kept eating and after a while, I was done. Logan still sat across from me and noticed I finished eating.
'I think I'm going back to the Med-jacks.' I said. I had nothing else to do, so doing my job seemed like the best option.
'You sure?' Logan asked.
'Yes.' I got up from my seat and Logan did too. 'I guess I'll see you at dinner then.'
'Bye.' I and Logan walked in different directions. I saw Thomas and Minho just walking out of the med-hut before I walked in. Newt was standing in front of the med-beds, the one where the girl was lying in.
'Hey.' I walked over to him.
Newt looked up and his frown disappeared when he saw me. 'Hey, love.'
The butterflies in my stomach grew when he called me love.
'Anything yet?' I looked at the girl.
'No. She didn't wake up. Jeff said she'll do soon.' I saw how stressed Newt was.
'And the note?' I wondered.
'We'll worry about it later.' Newt responded.
'I think you should worry about it now. If the Box isn't coming back up, how long are we gonna last?' Jeff asked.
'No one said that.' Now the stress was very visible on Newt's face. Like he was convincing himself more than us. 'No one said the Box wasn't coming back up.'
'But the note-.'
'Let's just wait until she wakes up,' Newt interrupted Jeff. 'I'll see you at dinner,' Newt mumbled and walked away.
A little unsure about Newt's mood I sat down on a chair and looked at the girl. Her dark hair was about the same length as mine. Though she was asleep and looked a little pale, she was pretty. Very pretty.
'How are you?' Jeff suddenly asked. 'Did you get hurt in the maze?'
'I'm fine. Didn't get hurt.' I looked up.
'Okay, great.' Jeff replied. 'We have to give Alby food. Wanna help?'
I nodded and followed Jeff to another side of the med-hut. Clint was standing next to a bed, with Alby on it. His chest moved heavily and black liquid came out of his mouth. The veins on his body were also black and purple. He didn't look good. Alby was tied to the bed.
'What are we going to do with him?' My voice cracked. 'The same as Ben?'
'Eventually, we'll have to.' Clint answered.
I realized how bad things were. Were we going to banish the leader? What would Newt think about it?
'Here.' Clint handed me a warm cup of soup and a spoon. 'Feed him.'
Unsure I walked over to Alby. His mouth was already slightly open and I sat down on the chair next to his head. Slowly I got some soup on the spoon and moved it to his mouth. After I put some in his mouth, I repeated it a few times.
'Alright,' Jeff said. 'Good job.'

At dinner, I noticed how tired I actually was. Constantly I yawned and rubbed my eyes. I probably looked bad too.
'Hey, Chuck,' I greeted and sat down next to the kid.
'Nor!' Chuck smiled. 'What was in the maze? What were the Grievers like? Was it scary?'
'Woah, woah, Chuck. Calm down there.' I recognized the familiar British voice. Newt sat down across from us and laughed at Chuck. At least he didn't seem so stressed anymore.
'You okay?' Newt looked at me. I was right, I probably looked like klunk.
'Yes.'
'You look like shit,' Chuck blurted out.
'Chuck!' Newt called.
'What? It's true!' Chuck defended. 'Sorry, Nor,' He added.
'It's fine. I know.' I laughed. 'Just a little tired.'
'You haven't slept in two days and a night!' Newt's expression turned worried.
'I'll be fine. After dinner, I'll just go to sleep.'
'Okay.' Newt seemed more satisfied.
'Yo.' Minho and Thomas sat down next to Minho.
'And where have you two been?' Newt asked.
'The maze.' They replied in unison.
'And you didn't bring me?' I asked, offended.
'Were we supposed to?' Minho asked.
'Yes!'
'No!' Newt said at the same time as me.
I let out a sigh but was too tired to start another fight.
'Is the girl awake yet?' Thomas asked.
'No.' I answered. 'Probably tomorrow.'
After a while, I finished eating. 'I'm gonna go to sleep. Bye.' I got up.
'I'll go with you.' Newt got up too and I could hear Minho laughing. Newt followed me to my hut and opened the door for me.
'Are you okay?' I asked as I put on my pajamas, Newt did too.
'Yes.' Newt seemed less stressed. 'Are you?'
'Yes.' I laughed a little. After getting dressed I crawled into bed. Newt lay down next to me and moved the hair out of my face.
'Do you still want to go into the maze?' He asked quietly.
'Yes,' I answered.
Newt said something, but I didn't hear it. Slowly my eyes closed and I drifted off to sleep.
