Chapter thirteen - Splinters
I opened my eyes when someone pressed their hand down on my mouth. My cry was muffled by the hand and I blinked a few times to get used to the dark.
I recognized Adam's face immediately and wanted to scream, but he covered my mouth tightly.
'Did you really think I was dead? Did you think I wasn't gonna come back?' He whispered with a threatening tone.
I couldn't do anything. I couldn't scream or move. He sat on top of me, so I couldn't move my legs, one of his hands had pinned my arms above me.
When I made another muffled noise Adam pressed his hand down on my mouth and nose even tighter. He blocked the air from my lungs and I couldn't breath. I tried to kick or move, but I was stuck.
Adam let go of my mouth for a split second and put a cloth in it, so I couldn't talk or scream. I felt tears form in my eyes as he moved the hair out of my face.
'You really shouldn't have told them, sweetheart.' His tone was annoying. He got off me and bend down to my pants. My legs were free, but my arms were still being held by him.
Before Adam could do anything else I started kicking with my legs and tried to get the cloth out of my mouth.
'Fine.' Adam moved closer to me.
He grabbed a big knife from his pocket and the moonlight made it shine. 'I'll remove the cloth.' And so he did. 'Cause I want to hear you scream.' He moved the knife closer to me.
~
I started screaming, yelling, and crying. I kicked with my legs and arms, trying to resist. Tears streamed down my face as I felt two strong arms grab me. I resisted, trying to escape from the arms and I started kicking again.
'Hey!' I heard the person holding me yell. 'Hey, it's okay.'
I panicked even more and still tried to resist.
'Nora.' The person held me tight. 'It's okay.' The voice was calming and recognizable. 'It was just a dream.' The person slowly rocked me back and forth, while their arms held me tightly. After a while my breathing got steadier and realized I was okay.
'It was just a dream.' The person kept comforting me until I completely calmed down. I recognized the British voice and looked at the person. I was right, it was Newt.
His grip loosened and I sat down on the bed with my back against the wall, so did Newt.
'What happened?' I asked, still a little unsure about everything.
'You had a nightmare.' Newt grabbed my hand. 'Do you want to tell me what happened?'
'Adam.' Was the only thing I said.
'Do you wanna go to sleep?' Newt squeezed my hand.
'Yes.' I nodded and laid down. Newt put the blanket on top off me.
A little unsure Newt looked at the empty spot next to me. 'Good night.' He looked at me again and smiled as he got up.
When he was about to walk out of my hut I interrupted him. 'Newt?'
'Yeah?' He immediately turned around.
'Could you- never mind.' I wanted him to lay next to me, but he definitely wouldn't want that.
'No. What were you saying?' Newt moved closer to me.
'Could you stay with me?' I finally asked.
In my surprise Newt agreed and he laid down next to me. 'You okay?' He slowly moved my hair out of my face.
I could only nod and stare into his eyes. Whenever he got closer to me I felt the warmth in my body spreading. He is so kind and caring.. Slowly my eyes closed.
~
'Love?' I woke up by Newt's morning voice. I opened my eyes and looked at him. His hair was messy and his eyes looked tired, but somehow he still managed to looked very handsome. Handsome? I can't think like this!
'Morning.' I replied. After a few seconds I stretched my arms and Newt got out of the bed.
'I'll see you at breakfast, okay?' He ran a hand trough his messy hair.
'Okay.' I nodded and Newt walked out.
~
I had already joined Minho for breakfast, when Newt walked over to our table. He looked less sleepy and his hair wasn't messy anymore.
'You okay?' Newt sat down next Minho and looked at me, he probably asked because of the nightmare.
'Yeah.' I gave him a small smile and started eating breakfast.
After a while I noticed Minho smirking at me.
'What?' I looked up.
'What were you guys doing yesterday?' He looked at Newt and back at me again.
'What do you mean?' I asked.
'Newt was lying on top of you.' Minho smirked.
'We fell.' I simply replied.
'It looked like you were kissing.' Minho said. Newt chocked on his food and I felt my cheeks heat up. 'Were you two kissing?'
'What? No!' I felt myself get even redder.
'You're blushing.' Minho smirked.
'No, I'm not.'
I didn't want Minho or Newt to know I didn't mind Newt touching me. I was embarrassed by the fact that I enjoyed being with Newt, and that I liked being around him.
'You are.' Minho kept looking at me.
'Whatever helps you sleep at night.' I sighed and finished my breakfast. 'I'll see you guys later.' I got up and started walking to the med-hut.
Before going in the hut I turned around one last time and saw Minho and Newt talking to each other. Their faces were close together and it looked like they were whispering. Newt had a kind of mad look on his face as he argued with Minho, who could only smirk. I could tell the two of them were really good friends.
I turned around again and walked into the med-hut.
'Hey, Greenie.' Clint greeted me as he treated a Builder.
'Morning.' I sat down on a chair and handed Clint the stuff he needed.
After a while someone stumbled into the hut. 'Clint, Jeff.' The person walked over to us. 'Got some splinters.' He motioned at his hand.
'Sit down.' Jeff motioned at the chair in front of me. 'The Greenie can treat you.'
The boy nodded and looked at me. 'Nora, right?' He asked.
'Yeah.' I nodded and grabbed some stuff off the table.
'I'm Logan.' The boy introduced himself.
'Nice to meet you.' I looked at the boy. His hair was charcoal black and almost covered bright blue eyes. He ran a hand trough his hair so it wouldn't get in his eyes and I noticed his skin was clear as crystal. Logan was probably around sixteen years old. And I have to say, he was good looking.
'What happened?' I looked at the splinters in his hand.
'Got a day off today and wanted to help Gally around, but I'm not that good with my hands.' He chuckled lightly. 'Gally immediately started shoutin' and send me away.'
'That's a whole lot different than Nora's story.' Jeff said. 'When she hurt herself Gally brought her to the med-hut himself. He stayed the whole shuckin' treatment.'
'Maybe he likes you.' Logan laughed and revealed his white teeth.
'Nah.' I sighed and grabbed the tweezers. 'I see him as a good friend.' I said as I started plucking the splinters out of Logan's hand.
'I don't think Gally's the only one.' Logan added.
'Guys, Gally doesn't like me in that way.' I sighed again. 'But what do you mean with not the only one?' I looked at Logan.
'Oh, I don't know. Some guys just have an eye on you.'
'Who?' I was curious.
'That's for you to find out.' Logan replied. 'If you pay attention you'll see.' He smirked.
'What?' I only got more confused. I couldn't think of anyone who really seemed to like me in that way. 'All done.' I said after a while, after all the splinters were out.
'Thanks.' Logan smiled.
'What's your job?' I asked out of curiosity.
'Runner.' Logan got up and walked away.
