Chapter sixty-five - Panic
Newt's POV
I woke up to a small cry coming from my side. Immediately my eyes shot open and I looked next to me. Nora lay in her place like usual and it seemed like nothing was wrong, until she let out another cry.
'Nora?' I bend over to see her face. Her eyes were still closed and I assumed she was asleep and was probably just sleeping talking again. I lay down again.
Nora muttered something so quietly I couldn't even hear it, so I just ignored it and tried to fall asleep again.
'No.' Nora mumbled. Immediately all my attention was drawn to her again. No?
'No, no, no.' Nora continued mumbling the words over and over again.
'Nora?' I shook her shoulders lightly but she didn't open her eyes.
'Help.' Nora whispered. 'No. You can't do this.' Her voice was shaking and I was getting worried. She let out another cry and continued murmuring stuff that didn't really make sense.
'No, no!' Nora raised her voice.
'Love, wake up, please.' I said worriedly.
Her words started to turn into cries and every time they got louder.
'Nora.' I shook her again, but there was no response. Suddenly she screamed so loud, it made me flinch. 'Come on, Nora.' I gently said.
Another heartbreaking scream echoed through the Glade, followed by some sobs. Can a person cry in their sleep? Is she having a nightmare?
'No!' Nora cried out as her screams started to get louder. Again, I shook her, but not hard enough to wake her up.
Nora started twisting and turning on her spot. 'N-no!' She cried through the sobs.
When Nora started crying into the pillow, I shook her whole body, rougher than before.
Finally, she seemed to open her eyes, but the cries never stopped. Instead, they only got louder.
'Nora, love. Calm down.' I wrapped my arms around her, but she didn't hug back. Tears streamed down her face as she sat straight up in the bed. I noticed that one of her hands was on her chest, which moved up and down in fast motions.
'Nora, tell me what's going on.' I cupped her face but she didn't look at me. She stayed silent and the only thing I heard was Nora's cries and sobs.
'Nora? What's happening?'
'I-.' Nora got up from her bed and I noticed how shaky her hands were. She put one of them on her forehead as she took a few steps through the hut. 'I-.' She stuttered again, never finishing her sentence.
Suddenly someone rushed into Nora's hut. 'What's happening?' Minho ran in. He wore shorts and a grey shirt. His hair was messy and he looked sleepy.
'I heard screams. And not happy screams.'
'I don't know what the hell is happening! She just- I don't know... she bloody scares me.'
Minho moved closer to Nora, who sat down on the ground with her back leaning against the wall. Her shaking hands were still on her chest, which moved up and down way too fast. Tears streamed down her face. After inspecting Nora for a few seconds, Minho looked at me.
'Go get the Med-jacks.' He said.
'What? Why? What's happening?'
'For god's sake, Newt! Just do it! This is serious!'
It convinced me enough to go to the Homestead and wake up Clint and Jeff.

Nora's POV
Someone roughly shook my body and I finally escaped from the horrible nightmare. At least I thought I did. Something made me think it was all still a dream. A bad one. My cries got louder and my vision blurred because of the tears.
Someone wrapped their arms around me, which didn't help in the slightest. Things only got worse. It felt like the air was squeezed out of my lungs. Someone said something, but I couldn't even hear it. I was too busy in my mind, trying to figure out if it was a dream or not.
I sat up straight in my bed and put my hand on my chest. It was burning. A stinging pain in my chest made my breathing hitch.
A person cupped my face and I started to hyperventilate. Was it all a dream? The stinging got worse and I was panicking about what was happening to me.
'Nora? What's happening?' Someone asked. I couldn't see them and didn't know if it was because my vision was blurred with tears, or because I was dizzy and black dots appeared in my sight.
'I-.' I tried to talk as I got up from her bed. I put one of my shaking hands on my forehead, trying to stop the dizziness. 'I-.' I tried to speak again, but all the air I had was gone.
I broke down onto the ground and pressed my hands down on my burning chest. They shook like crazy and my chest did too. As I wondered what the hell was happening again, more tears streamed down my face. It felt like if I didn't get air in any second, I would faint.
There was some movement in front of me and I noticed a short-haired person, but couldn't even tell who it was.
Some people yelled and I started to hear blurred voices. 'Nora? Can you hear me?' The words echoed in my head and I had to think for a few seconds before I responded.
'Y-.' Instead of wasting air I nodded.
'Look at me, Nora.' The echo was back again. My hyperventilating got worse and worse. 'Look at me.' Finally, I lifted my head and looked into someone's eyes. Either it was too dark or my vision was too blurred for me to see who it was.
'You need to-..' I couldn't hear the whole sentence. It was blurred. 'Try it. Through your nose.'
I let out multiple sobs when my chest was stinging like hell and the world around me spun. I needed air.
'You can do it, Nora. Think about... Chuck. Yes, Chuck. Your cousin.' The person said. A picture of Chuck flashed across my mind. He was smiling from ear to ear and his chubby cheeks were clearly visible. Something about seeing my cousin made me feel a little less... panicked.
'Good. Now think- uhm.. think about Newt. Something you like about him. About Newt. Tell me what you like about Newt.' The person didn't really seem to know what he was doing, but it did work.
'His- his a-accent.' I said through my gasps.
'Okay. What else? What color is his hair?'
'Bl-blonde.'
'Great job. Now, can you name an Asian boy who's a Runner?'
I thought for a second. 'Min-Minho.' I gasped for air, but I still didn't manage to get much in my lungs.
'Yes.'
Then something in my mind snapped. It was Minho in front of me. He was the one asking questions.
'Now name someone other than Minho, Newt, or Chuck. Who else do you think of? Name two boys.'
'Log-.' I gasped for air again.
'Nora, concentrate.'
'Logan an-and Thomas.'
My chest started moving up and down slower than before. 'You're doing great, Nora. What's your job? What do you do in the Glade?'
'I-I run.'
'Yes. What're you called when you a run?'
'A Runner.' Again, I gasped for air and finally, I manage to breathe for a second. Just two, fast and small ones. But they were breaths.
'Almost there, Nora. How did you get in the Glade?'
'The Box.' I could reply in full sentences now.
'Exactly. How long have you been here?'
'Almost three months.'
And finally, after what felt like hours, I could breathe again. I took a few deep ones, filling my lungs with oxygen again. My vision got less blurry but I was still a little dizzy. Minho appeared in front of me.
'Thank you.' I quietly said, not noticing the number of tears falling down my cheeks.
'Get here.' Minho firmly wrapped his arms around me and I hugged back. I cried into his shoulder, making his shirt wet. The sobs slowly got quieter and I realized how comfortable I was in Minho's arms. I felt like he saved me. And maybe he actually did.
~
I let go of Minho again and he inspected my face. 'Are you okay now?'
'Yes.' I nodded.
Minho pulled me off the floor and lay me down on the bed. 'Just try to sleep, okay? Newt will be here any minute and I'll wait on the chair the whole time. I'm not leaving.' Minho sat down on my desk chair. 'You're okay now.'
