Chapter seventeen - Questions

Jeff and Clint had left the med-hut messy, again. I was cleaning everything up before going to dinner. I don't get why they won't clean it up a little, maybe because they're boys? Do all boys do that? I wonder if Newt's room is messy, I've never been there before. In fact, I've never been in any boys hut. But I don't want to.. I guess.

After a while I finished cleaning and got some dinner. With a full plate in my hands I looked around. I noticed Logan sitting alone again, so decided to join him.

'Hey, Logan.' I sat down.

'Oh, hey.' He smiled when he saw me joining him. 'How are you?'

'Great.' I lied again. I wasn't great. I though about my memories a lot and I felt guilty about cutting myself the previous night. 'What about you?'

'I'm good.' He replied and we both started eating.

Slowly my eyes trailed off to Newt. He was limping over to Minho and sat down. 'Logan?' I looked at the boy.

'Yeah?' He looked up.

'Do you know what happened to Newt's leg? Why does he have a limp?' I finally asked the question that had been burning on my lips for days.

'Uhm. I don't know.' Logan seemed to tell the truth. 'He never talks about it and he had it before I got here.'

'Okay. I was just wondering.' I replied.

Logan nodded and we both finished our dinner.

'I'm gonna go to the Homestead.' Logan got up.

'What're you gonna do in there?' I asked.

'Nothing. Just sit there until I get tired.' Logan shrugged.

I felt bad for him. He didn't have any other friends besides me and he had to spend the whole day alone.

'I can go with you?' I suggested.

Logan seemed to be surprised. 'If you want to.' He rubbed the back of his neck. 'I know a nice place, it's better than the Homestead.'

'Okay. Show me.' I smiled and Logan grabbed my arm, leading me to the place.

After a while Logan let go off my arm. We stood in front of a wooden tower. 'I hope you're not of heights.' Logan looked at the tall tower and started climbing up, I followed.

After a few minutes we sat on top of the tower. The sight was beautiful. I could see some boys walking around the Glade as the sky was mixed with beautiful different colors.

'Wow.' I sighed.

'I know. It's amazing.' Logan replied.

'Are all boys messy?' I asked out of sudden. The question just flashed into my head.

'What?' Logan frowned for a second. 'No. I don't think so. But I sleep in the Homestead with the others so we don't really have our own place.'

'Must suck.' I sighed. 'I feel bad for all the boys who sleep in the Homestead.'

Logan shrugged. 'I don't really mind it.'

'Okay.' I laughed a little.

Me and Logan talk for another good hour and then took our separate ways. On my way to my hut I thought about Logan. He was a nice guy and I didn't get why he had no friends. I felt bad for him. Without realizing it I walked to the med-hut and grabbed the same small knife.

Before I knew it I had sliced my wrist. Just as the previous night I felt relieved. It was like my worries were gone for a while. I didn't get why, but I liked it. I liked the feeling of it. I had promised myself not to do it again, but it was like an old habit coming back.

After a few more cuts I cleaned everything up, and got in my bed.

The next days the kids visited Thomas and Teresa very night. But this night it was different, they brought Chuck too. They didn't know if it would be a good idea, but it turned out to be. Chuck and Thomas immediately liked each other and they started talking like crazy.

'Nora?' Newt asked quietly. He was sitting on the ground next to Nora.

'Yeah?' She looked at him.

'Can we go see Lizzy?' He asked. Nora saw the sadness and grief on his face and she immediately agreed on going to Lizzy.

'We're gonna head out.' Nora looked at the other kids before opening the door.

'Have fun.' Minho smirked, but neither Nora or Newt seemed to like his joke.

The two kids walked trough the dark, empty hallway and suddenly Newt grabbed Nora's hand. A little hesitated she grabbed his too, and they didn't let go until they arrived at Lizzy.

Newt smiled, but you could see the sadness in his eyes. The two kids watched the little girl sleep in silence for a while, until Newt wanted to leave again.

I woke up by light shining in my hut. After rubbing my eyes I got out of my bed. Quickly I put on Newt's long sleeved sweater and some pants. I brushed trough my hair and put it in a low ponytail. After getting ready I walked out of my hut, towards the kitchen.

'Looks good, Frypan. Thanks.' I smiled when he gave me the food. I saw Minho sitting all alone and walked over to him.

'Mind if I join?' I asked.

'Yes.' Minho didn't even bother to look up. 'Just kidding. Sit down.' Minho motioned at the empty bench across from him.

I sat down and started eating. After a while I saw Newt limping over to Alby and they started having a conversation.

'Minho?'

'Yeah?' He looked up.

'How did Newt get his limp?' Without even thinking for a second the question just flew out of my mouth.

Minho's smile disappeared immediately and I saw the horror in his eyes.

'Never mind.' I quickly said when I noticed that it was a sensitive subject.

Minho didn't say anything else the whole meal until he finished eating.

Great. Now he's upset because of my stupid question.

'Bye.' Minho got up and walked to the Doors.

I was left a little guilty. Newt's limp was obviously something they didn't talk about and it seemed like only Minho knew about it. I felt bad for asking people about it, but I was so curious.

I got up too and walked to the med-hut.

'Morning.' I sat down on a chair and leaned my head on my hand.

'Hey.' The two Med-jacks greeted me.

'What ya thinkin' about?' Jeff looked at me.

'Nothing.' I shrugged. 'Just something stupid I did this morning.'

'What did you do?' Jeff sat down.

'Asked a stupid question.' I sighed.

'Like what?'

'How Newt got his limp.' I hesitantly replied.

Jeff's smile disappeared and Clint stopped in right in his tracks.

'See! You're doing it too.' I sighed. 'I was just wondering.' I mumbled. 'You two obviously know what happened and so does Minho. Why can't anyone tell me what happened?'

'It's none of our business. You should ask Newt, not us.' Jeff replied just before Clint hit the back of his head.

'Alright then.' I got up from my chair but Clint stopped me immediately.

'Don't ask Newt about it!' Clint quickly said. 'Just stop asking about the limp and especially to him.'

I frowned. 'Okay, I guess.' I sat down again.

A little unsure about everything I continued working until it was time for lunch.

The day went by quickly and it was time for dinner.

With a full plate in my hand I followed Clint and Jeff, who joined Minho.

I noticed the tension between the four of us.

I should never have asked about the limp.

No one said a word as we all looked down. In the corner of my eyes I saw someone join us. It was Newt.

'Hey.' Newt greeted us just like he always did, but he soon noticed the strange tension. 'What's happening?' He asked confused.

The three boys all looked at me for a second and I felt myself get red.

'Nora?' I felt Newt's eyes on me as I looked down.

'Yes?' I continued staring at the ground.

'What's happening?' He asked again.

'Nothing.' I mumbled. I heard Newt sigh and I immediately felt guilty again. I had changed the whole mood and no one talked to me now, except for Newt, who has nog clue what was happening.

'I'm full.' I shoved my not empty plate to the side and quickly ran over to the med-hut. I grabbed the knife and started cutting again. My whole wrist was covered in cuts. Some of them older and others still bleeding.

I quickly cleaned everything up and covered my wrist. When I got back in my own hut, Newt was sitting on my bed.
