Chapter fourteen - Memory
After treating Logan I got some dinner. I thanked Frypan and looked at all the tables. Newt and Minho were nowhere to be seen, and I didn't see Gally either. My eye caught Logan sitting at a table on his own, so I walked over to him.
'Can I join you?' I asked as he looked up.
'Sure.' He smiled and I sat across from him.
'How's your hand doing?' I asked before taking a bite of my food.
'It's alright. Little painful, but I can live with it.' Logan looked at his hand and started eating too.
'How long have you been here?' I started asking Logan a few questions, so I got to know him better.
'Not the longest. I think for about a year or so.' He replied. 'And you? Excited for the new Greenie? It'll be Greenie day in a week.'
'Yeah. I hope people will finally stop calling me Greenie.' I laughed. 'I hope it's another girl though.'
Logan let out a chuckle and we both ate our dinner.
'How did you become a Runner?' I asked Logan after a few seconds of silence.
'I wasn't good at the other jobs and I almost turned out to be a Slopper, until I asked Minho to give me a training. Eventually he said yes and I was good enough to be a Runner. That's basically it.' Logan shrugged.
'And did you ever see a Griever?'
'Nope. Minho did tell me what they look like though.' Logan replied.
'You're nice to talk to, Logan.' I smiled a little and looked at the empty seats next to us. 'Who do you usually hang out with?'
Logan hesitated for a while and then answered. 'No one.' He sighed.
'Why not?' I asked, surprised.
'Guess they don't like me that much.' Logan shrugged and didn't seem to like the subject.
'I can confirm you're very likeable.' I said. 'I should tell 'em that.'
'Whatever you say.' Logan sighed. 'But I don't think that's gonna change their mind. He's making it very obvious he doesn't like me.' Logan looked at someone behind me and I turned around.
Newt was staring at Logan with his jaw clenched, but when he saw me looking he quickly looked at Minho.
'He shouldn't judge you like that. He probably doesn't even know you.' I looked and Logan again.
'He definitely knows me. And I know why he doesn't like me.' Logan confirmed. 'But I don't think that's the reason why he's looking at me like that right now.'
'What do you mean?' I frowned.
'I think he doesn't like the fact that I hang out with you, or you hang out with me.' Logan replied.
'He shouldn't be bothered. I can decide who I hang out with for myself.' I mocked.
'Whatever you say.' Logan sighed and got up. 'I'm gonna head off to the Homestead. I'll see you later.' Logan smiled and walked away.
It was nice to talk to Logan. Somehow he seemed different than the others, but I didn't know why I thought that. After a while I got up and walked over to Minho and Newt, who were still sitting at their table.
'Hey.' Both of them looked up when I greeted them. 'Can I join?' I asked, to make sure they agreed to me sitting down.
'Yeah, of course.' Minho moved to the side a little so I could sit down.
The three of us stayed in silence. Minho just ate his food and Newt stared at the table.
'What's going on?' I asked after a few more seconds of silence.
'Nothing.' Newt mumbled.
'Convincing.' I leaned my head on my hand.
It looked like Minho didn't want to join the conversation. 'If you guys aren't gonna say anything, them I'll leave.' I got up.
'Wait.' Newt quickly said.
I sat down again and looked at him. 'Yes?'
'Why are you hanging out with Logan?' Newt frowned and he almost seemed disgusted.
'Why not? He's nice.' I sternly replied.
'I don't like him.' Newt murmured.
Minho let out a laugh and I wondered why he would do that.
'Good for you.' I said, a little annoyed by Newt. I liked him and being close to him, but he really had to stop acting like I couldn't have any other friends. 'Night.' I got up and walked away.
~
'Can't we go talk to those kids?' Minho asked a few days later. 'I want to meet 'em.'
'How do you even wanna get there?' Newt asked.
'Sneak in.' Minho simply replied.
'I'm curious too.' Alby confirmed.
'We won't be able to get in. They're watching us.' The girl motioned at the uniformed guards.
Minho sighed. 'We'll find a way.'

The next morning I woke up by Newt shaking me. 'What?' I groaned as I opened my eyes.
'You gotta wake up.' He said.
'Alright.' I sighed and removed the blanket. 'I'll see you at breakfast.' I said, sternly. I was still a little annoyed by Newt, because of what he had said the previous night.
Newt took the sign and walked towards the door. 'Nora?' He asked before walking out.
'Yes?' I looked at him.
'Sorry about yesterday.' And then he walked out of the hut, leaving me a little shocked by the sudden apology.
I quickly put on my own pants and one of Newt's shirts. The Box didn't come up yet, so I didn't have any other clothes then the ones I was wearing when I arrived in the Glade. Newt had offered me his clothes and I slept in them, and sometimes wore them trough the day.
I walked out of the hut and got myself some food.
'Thanks, Fry.' I smiled when he handed me a plate filled with bread and an egg.
I noticed Logan sitting alone again, so I joined him.
'Hey.' I sat down.
'Morning.' He looked up and smiled lightly. 'You're early. Normally only the Runners wake up this early.'
'Oh. I always wake up at this time, or Newt wakes me up.' I shrugged. 'I don't really mind it.'
'Alright.' Logan lets out a laugh, but it quickly disappeared again. 'Do you remember things from your past?' He suddenly asked.
I hesitated for a moment. I did remember things, but I didn't tell anyone about them before. It wasn't like I didn't trust Logan, but I didn't want to tell him. 'No, not really. Do you?' I felt guilty for not telling him.
'Not much, but a few things. Like guards coming in my house and taking me away from my parents.'
Logan's story was different than mine. Guards didn't take me away from my parents, my parents brought me to the strange building theirselves. They also took my cousin.
~
Two years later the kids finally managed to get to the two other kids. They were supposed to be sleeping and it was almost completely dark in the hallway. Alby, Minho, Newt and Nora were on their way to the kids. They had left Chuck in his room.
'Ow!' The girl whisper-screamed. 'Minho! Stop standing on my toes!'
'Just get out the way!' He whisper-screamed back.
'Shut it!' Alby said as they kept walking.
After a while they stood in front of a door.
'Subject A2?' Newt read the letters that were written on the door out loud.
Minho slowly knocked on the door and after hearing a few groans the door opened. There was a boy standing there. He looked around their age and he was the same height. He had brown hair and a few moles on his face.
'Who are you?' He asked, shakily.
'Who are you?' Minho repeated, focusing on the word 'you'.
'I-I'm Thomas.' He replied. 'Uhm- come in I guess.' A little unsure he motioned for them to get in his room.
'We're from the other side of the building.' Nora explained. 'We were curious about you and the other girl.'
'Where is she?' Minho asked.
'She's in her own room.' Thomas replied. 'Wait, let me get her real quick.' Thomas closed his eyes.
Newt frowned and the the four kids gave each other a glance.
'She'll be here in a minute.' Thomas opened his eyes again and looked at the kids.
Just like Thomas had said, not even a minute later, someone knocked on the door. Thomas got up and opened it, revealing a girl. Her dark hair was in a low ponytail and she had green eyes. The girl walked into the room as if she did it everyday and sat down next to Thomas.
In unbelief the four others kids looked at them.
'How did you-?' Minho murmured.
'This is Teresa. Her room is next door.' Thomas motioned at the girl.
'How did you tell her to come?' Newt frowned.
'Trough or minds.' Thomas simply answered.
