Chapter forty-five - Fine

'Newt!' My eyes shot open and I looked right into Jeff's eyes. I remembered what happened. Nora was dead. I looked behind Jeff and saw Nora still lying on the bed.

'You have some... tears on your face.' Jeff motioned at my face. Quickly I wiped away the tears and looked at Nora. Jeff gave me a confused look.

'I can't believe it..' I mumbled.

'Jezus Christ, Newt.' Clint walked into the med-hut. 'You have some crazy dreams.'

'What?' I frowned.

'You were screaming and crying.' Jeff explained.

'What?' I repeated and looked at Nora. Her chest slowly moved up and down. 'Is she alive?' I asked.

Jeff frowned. 'Yes. Why would you think she wasn't?'

'Oh, god.' I rubbed my eyes. It was a dream. All of it. Nora wasn't dead. 'I thought she-' My breath hitched.

'Your dream,' Jeff started.

'Yes.' I mumbled.

(A/N: Hehe I got you :)

'We're gonna try to give her food again.' Clint announced. I gave him a nod and he grabbed the warm soup and spoon again. Slowly he poured it into Nora's mouth, but again, she didn't swallow.

'Shit.' I mumbled. 'How long has she been without food, Clint?'

'Three days.' He replied.

'That's not good. How long will she last?'

'A human can go without food for two months, so it's not the biggest problem.' Clint explained. 'But she's dehydrated.'

With a sigh, I looked at Nora. 'I just don't get why she won't wake up.'

The Med-jacks didn't respond.

The next day everything was the same. Nora was still asleep, or whatever was happening to her. I didn't leave the med-hut and sometimes Logan or Minho visited.

'It's taking too long.' I complained.

'We just have to wait.' Clint said. 'It's lunchtime.'

'I'm not leaving.'

'We've noticed.' Jeff tried to joke. 'We'll bring you some after.' The two boys left me and Nora alone.

I grabbed her cold hand and looked at her face. She didn't look well, but Clint said she was doing okay, except for not eating.

'You have to wake up, Nora.' I sighed. 'Chuck is wondering where you are and we're all worried about you.'

No response, of course.

I rubbed my chin and averted my eyes from Nora until I felt a very small, but noticeable, squeeze in my hand. Immediately I had all the attention for Nora and straightened my back.

'Nora?' I asked, just like I had done before. I felt her fingers move in my hand. Was she waking up? Full of hope, I watched her face. Her breaths got a little faster. She grabbed my hand back.

'Nora?' My heart started beating faster. Slowly, very slowly, Nora opened her eyes. She blinked a few times and looked at the ceiling. As calm as possible, though on the inside I was screaming of happiness, I bend closer to her. 'Love?' Slowly she turned her head and her eyes met mine.

Eventually, I gently wrapped my arms around her. 'I'm glad you're awake.' I smiled and let go of her again.

Nora's eyebrows furrowed and she sat up straight.

'Woah, woah.' I pushed her back down onto the bed.

'Wha-what?' Nora looked around in the med-hut. 'What's happen-'

'Calm down for a second, love.' I interrupted her. 'You have to take it easy.'

'What happened?' Her voice was hoarse.

'Your wrist.' I motioned at it. Nora moved her hand up and inspected the bandages on her wrist. I could hear her breathing hitch when she put her arm back down.

For a few seconds, Nora was silent. 'Sorry.' She said quietly, voice cracking.

'It's fine.' I lied. Of course, it wasn't fine.

'It's not fine.' She corrected. 'I shouldn't have done it. I never meant to- I didn't want this to happen.' Tears formed in her eyes.

'It's gonna be okay, Nora.' I tried to comfort her. 'We'll talk about it later.'

We were both silent for a few seconds until Nora spoke again.

'How long was I out for?' She asked.

'Four days.'

'Four?!' She got up again, and I pushed her back down, again.

'Hey! You're awake.' Clint and Jeff walked into the med-hut.

'Yeah.' She replied.

'How are you feeling?' Clint asked.

'Fine.' Nora answered. 'Can I get up now?'

'I don't know if that's-'

Nora removed the blanket from her body and stepped out of bed.

'Woah.' I caught her body when she almost fell.

'I'm dizzy.' Nora rubbed her forehead.

'You need food.' Clint decided.

'I'll go get you some.' Jeff said.

'No. I'll go myself. I want to see the others.' Nora looked at me.

'Are you sure?' I asked.

'Yes.'

'Okay, I'll help you walk.' I wrapped my arm around her and we started walking to the kitchen. We moved very slowly but eventually, we got there.

'Hey, Fry. Have you got some food left?' I asked.

'Hey, Nora! Long no see.' He smiled and filled a plate with some food.

'Thank you, Frypan.' Nora smiled at the Cook and we walked to a table.

'Nora?' We turned around and looked at Logan. When he saw Nora's face he ran over to her and hugged her. Jealousy rose in my chest.

Come on, Newt. Logan is just a friend.

'I'm glad your back.' Logan said once let go of Nora. 'How are you doing?'

'Great.' Nora smiled and sat down at the table. Logan sat across from her and I sat next to her.

Then logan's face expression turned serious. 'Why, Nora?' He asked.

Nora's smile disappeared and I noticed how unready she was to talk about it.

'Guys, should we talk about this tomorrow?' I suggested.

Nora gave me a nod and Logan agreed. 'Where's Chuck?' Nora asked.

'Right here!' The kid appeared behind Nora. 'Where were you, Nor?' He sat down next to her.

'Uhm-' She looked helpless.

'She was on her period, Chuck.' I said. Nora looked at me surprised.

'Her what-' Chuck started. 'Nevermind. At least you're back now!'

'Yes.' Nora let out a small laugh.

'I better go already! Gotta do the dishes.' Chuck got up and walked away.

'So, what's been happening when I was gone?' Nora asked before taking a bite of food.

'Minho and Thomas went into the maze a few times. They found something in the dead Grievers, they're gonna run in two days to look for more.' I explained.

Nora's face fell.

'What's wrong?' Logan saw it too.

'If I didn't do this to myself, I could've gone with them and helped. I'd been lying in that stupid bed for days and I was useless! Everyone is trying so hard and it looks like I only care about myself. I made everyone so worried, though that wasn't even necessary! And what would Chuck think if he knew what happened? I'm his older cousin. I'm supposed to give a good example! But the only thing I can do to let my feelings go away is hurt myself. That's so helpless. I told you so many times I would stop, and I really tried to, but it just got too much. And then it got out of hand. Newt didn't leave the med-hut for a single minute just because I was there, meaning he couldn't help anyone else!'

I and Logan were shocked by the things Nora said. Is this what she thinks?

'Nora. None of that is true.' Logan said. 'You're not useless.'

'It feels like that.' She mumbled. 'I want to help but now I can't because of this stupid wrist.'

'Nora, we're gonna help you, okay? It's all gonna be alright and we're gonna escape this place.' I said.

Nora bit her lip and nodded slowly.
