Chapter 39

DOCTORS and nurses rushed into the room after hearing Hyunjin's desperate screams. The doctors ran towards Mal's bed with told in their hands, while nurses tried to push the younger boy out of the room to give space for the professionals to do their jobs. Hyunjin took weak steps out of the room, feeling the nurse's hand on his back to push him out.

Despite the violent, heartbroken sobs escaping his mouth, he could feel multiple pairs of arms wrapping themselves around his torso. He let out a scream as he covered his face, shaking his head rapidly at the sound of the monitor beeping.

"No! No..."

Along with the annoying, heartbreaking beeping, the desperate tug at his broken heart made it worse. He covered his mouth and closed his eyes, a hand of his reaching up to lightly pinch the soft skin on his forearm. He wanted to feel something—anything.

Please, god, anything.

He desperately hoped it was all a dream.

"Wake up," he slowly spoke, "wake up."

And for a moment, he didn't know if he was talking to his wife or to himself.

Sobs and silent weeps echoed from all around him. His heart pounded loudly in his ears. Soft gasps and sobs of pain escaped his mouth and his vision blurred.

"Jagiya..."

His knees buckled beneath him and turned into jelly. His body ached for a break. He opened his eyes once again to find himself sliding onto the floor, making his knees hit the porcelain floor with a harsh thud.

"Please, jagiya..."

He covered his face with his palms once again, still crying and sobbing in distress.

He wasn't ready to lose her.

He wasn't ready to not see her everyday.

And he was certainly not ready to give up her holding him between her arms after a long, exhausting day.

"Jagiya, why..."

"Don't leave me, please."

Large tears streamed down his handsome face. He closed his eyes once again and tried his best to ignore all the traumatizing sensations around him, and focus on the arms hugging him in an attempt to calm him down.

And yet, the only thing he could hear was the damn beeping coming from inside his wife's room.

"Jagiya, I love you."

Despite the others' signs of distress as well, they still held onto his hand and hugged his frail body tightly. In a moment other than that, he would've appreciated it and thanked them from the bottom of his heart.

But how could he appreciate it when his wife, his soulmate and lover, was dead?

After all, she was the only one who believed him and fought for him.

He let out a gasp of air, realizing that his breath was coming in short, hitching gasps of distress ever since he came out of the room.

He closed his eyes and tried to focus on his breathing, waiting for a miracle of some sort to happen.

And after waiting for a few moments, it finally did.

The doctors pressed on the girl's chest with the defibrillator in their hands, shocking her in attempt to bring her heart back to life.

One shock.

Two shocks.

Three shocks.

Four shocks.

And before anyone could say anything further or even breathe, the heartbeat monitor came back to life. Short, steady beeps. The straight. Red lines turned into curves that moved up and down.

The doctors stood still for a moment of silence, then upon hearing that the beeps continued, they sighed in relief. The other members could see one of the head doctors tell the nurse to supervise the girl's cardiac health.

Then, they exited the room.

Walking up to the boys that were sitting on the floor next to Hyunjin, he sent them a sympathetic, relieved smile.

"She's going to be okay," she spoke, much to the others' delight, "she just needs some rest. Her heart is slow now, but it will get better once we give her the medications she needs."

Hyunjin looked up at the doctor, his violent sobs stopping to a halt.

"W-What?"

"Hyunjin, she's okay," Chan began cheerfully, soft sniffles and a small smile creeping over his face, "everything is going to be fine. You won't lose her!"

The words felt as though they were music to his ears. He let out a muffled gasp of happiness as his friends took their turns to hug him, cheering and telling him words of reassurance.

He covered his mouth once again, soft sobs of happiness and surprise escaping his mouth. He stretched his both arms out and wrapped his friends that were beside him in tight, grateful hugs.

"O-Oh, god, I was so worried-"

Because of his soft weeps and gasps of air, he couldn't say the full sentence without stuttering.

And despite him still being in a terrible shock, he knew he couldn't have been happier. Closing his eyes to savour the precious moments, he threw his head back and sighed, squeezing his friends tighter in the hug.

"I-I was so worried..."

"It's okay," Changbin whispered, "we all were. It's okay."

He opened his eyes once again and took a long glance at his wife's room, at her limp body, then at the heartbeat monitor that stood beside her.

The steady, red lines moving up and down. Exactly like they were a few moment earlier.

Everything was going to be okay.

And it looked like the red lines didn't let him down after all.
