EVERYONE AT Camp Wolfhead was outside, enjoying the pleasant summer evening outside. Everyone except one girl.
Etta Darryl was inside the laboratory, looking at some pictures. She was staring at them for a few seconds and then took down her notes.
"Miss Darryl? What are you doing inside? It's a pleasant evening outside, isn't it?" A soft voice called out as the lab door slid open.
Etta turned to look at the person. "Professor Longthorn! I was actually about to call you, I think I have made a discovery-"
"Miss Darryl, we shouldn't talk about this here," Professor Longthorn said, sharply. Her soft voice was no more, and Etta couldn't help but feel that she was on the wrong side of her professor.
"Yes, Professor Longthorn," she said. "Should we talk about it tomorrow? I mean, there's no urgency -"
Professor Longthorn looked at Etta for a minute, seeing the eager face of her student. "No, I'm afraid not. We can't wait until tomorrow, Miss Darryl. Come on outside, and we can talk there," Professor Longthorn said as she sighed. "Come on."
Etta and Professor Longthorn made their way through the crowd of campers whispering and giggling around the fire.
"What is it, Miss Darryl?" Professor Longthorn said as she saw the face of Etta a minute later as they reached the edge of the camp. "What did you want to tell me?"
"Professor, I was in the laboratory and I was looking at the pictures that Professor Morris told me to do my homework for, and I realized something. Professor, they're coming."
Professor Longthorn's face clouded. Her heart thumped and she felt like she was going to faint. "When? When will they be here, Miss Darryl?"
Etta gulped. "Um . . . in a couple of years, but they're going to come as quickly as a couple of weeks too, it's impossible to know-how. Er, but I suspect there will be -"
That second, the earth shook. Etta almost fell. "Side effects," she finished. Professor Longthorn was gasping as she stared up at the sky.
"GET EVERYONE INSIDE!" She yelled. "GO! Etta, that means you too!" Professor Longthorn was staring at Etta as every Professor hurried to get everyone inside. "Thank you, though, Miss Darryl."
Etta nodded and she smiled a little and she hurried away. Her face was hot and she was sweating as she tried to dodge something coming from the sky.
"Etta, look out!" a voice yelled as the person's hand pushed her down. "Etta, what were you doing? Can't you lookout?" The voice was hoarse as Etta hurried up and dusted herself.
"Z, you didn't have to save me," she said to her brother.
Zac Darryl looked behind his shoulder. "Go. Just go. We don't have time to bicker again. What is that?" Zac was pointing to a huge rock figure that was just a few feet away from the entrance of the camp.
"GET INSIDE!" Professor Longthorn's voice yelled. "ETTA! ZAC! INSIDE, BOTH OF YOU, GO! GO!!"
Etta and Zac looked at each other before they both hurried off in different directions to their bunks.
Etta was hurrying to the bunk as fast as her legs could take her. Just a few feet away. Just a few feet. She let out a huge burst of speed and reached the door. She twisted the doorknob and flung inside and closed the door.
"Etta!" said the voice of a girl. "Etta! What are you doing outside? What's happening? Is Zac okay?"
"Julie," Etta said as she looked up to see her best friend. "Julie. Jule, where are the others?" She looked around. "Jule, where are the other roommates?"
"Don't panic, they're here. Just scattered." Julie grabbed her best friend's hand. "Are you okay? What's happening to Camp Wolfhead? I thought it was the most secured camp in the world." Julie helped Etta get into a chair. "Etta? Etta, are you okay?"
"I'm good, Jules," Etta said as she sighed. "I'm fine."
"Tea?" Julie asked. "I was making it anyway." Julie made her way to a small table outside Etta's eyesight, where a carafe of tea was placed. Etta heard the sound of many glasses clinking together.
"I was - in a couple of years, or weeks, I don't know how yet, they are going to come," Etta said. She was a little out of breath.
Julie dropped something she was holding. "THEY?" she yelled. "WHEN? Et, we can't have them, it's not safe anymore!"
Suddenly, the voice of Professor Longthorn drifted into the room. "We need to get as many soldiers as we can. Morris, go through the files, I need them as fast as possible." Julie and Etta shot each other looks. "I need to speak to Miss Darryl."
The door slid open and Professor Longthorn stood in the doorway. "Miss Darryl, Miss Trent." She smiled at Julie. "Miss Trent, would you help clean the camp?"
"Yes, Professor Longthorn," Julie said as she nodded and hurried out of the bunk.
"Miss Darryl -" Professor Longthorn said.
"Professor Longbthorn, is it over?" Etta cut in. "Is it over? Are they gone? Should we do something about it?"
"Miss Darryl, it's okay. They're gone, but they will be back, right?" Professor Longthorn asked Etta. "Right, Miss Darryl?"
"Yes," Etta said. "They'll be back."
