IN A WORLD FULL OF IDIOTIC TENDENCIES with women who only cared about how their hair looked, men who stuck with the outdated principles of life. A world where no one could be whomever they wanted, where judgement and treachery lied. People were killed daily, their lives taken— simply because of the old testimonies of life. But that world only existed here, in real life. In the world of fiction, anything could happen.

A boy could befriend an alien, a young girl from Kansas could team up with the oddest of creatures on a trip down a yellow brick road, wizards could fight heroic battles, a jedi could fight for the better — anything is possible. That's why Betty Jones sat atop the pink quilted fabric on her bed with a book held between her hands. All that mattered in the world in this moment was the words written on the pages.

The blue covered book held between her finger tips as she bit her lip in suspense. Her legs crossed underneath the book in her jeans, her brown loafers folded as she sat in anticipation. Two pages left until the ending. She would finally find out if the girl got the guy. Which of course they would, because it was fiction.

"It's ten past seven," The sound of a familiar voice from down the hallway was left unheard as her focus was intended to finish the book. The brown haired boy sighed as he made his way into the bedroom, the light blue painted walls. "Betty!"

The eyes brighter than the sun glanced up for the first time in thirty seven minutes exactly, landing on the sight of her best— and only, friend. Jonathan Byers was stood at the foot of her bed with that same look he gave her every time she made him late. "Two more-"

"Let's go," He chuckled as he grabbed her school bag from the edge of her bedding. She sighed as she creased the corner of her book and shut it, placing it in her pocket. She threw a pink and white patterned cardigan over her long sleeved shirt. Standing up she exited her room as Jonathan followed behind.

The pair remained quiet as they made their way out of the house, Betty locking the door on the way. As they approached the car she noticed the young boy in the backseat. He waved at her immediately and she shot him a soft smile. "Hey Will," She greeted as she entered the vehicle. "Hey Betty."

There was something about Will Byers that always called to Betty. Maybe because just like her and Jonathan, he was a "freak", a "loser". He was different from everyone else, just like them. Just like her. Or maybe the fact that he was his older brother's twin. Even though he was a middle schooler so he obviously cared about not fitting in, he felt like he could fit in everytime he was with his brother and his best friend. Betty Jones was a comfort for Will Byers, the best fake sister he could ever had.

She was the only person who treated him normal after "the incident" last year. Everyone else, they treated him like he would break any moment now. But Betty always treated him the same. Because she knew he wanted to be treated normally, like a normal twelve year old. Whatever the hell normal meant. "We had a campaign yesterday, it was awesome."

"Did you win, Will the Wise?" She asked him gently as Jonathan started the car and they were off down the countryside. Will ecstatically told the two about the fantasy game for a majority of the car ride. The two teenagers listened intently, even though Jonathan had heard the whole thing the night before over dinner. He would never crush his brother's spirits and tell him to talk about something different. Like other siblings would do. Maybe that's why Will felt Jonathan treated him differently.

"Hey are you doing anything tonight?" Jonathan asked his brother through the mirror as his eyes glanced up. Betty bit her tongue to fight off a laugh looking at his evil glance. Jonathan bit his lip as he hummed, "I was gonna offer you go with Betty and I to see Silent Madness. But if you're too scared..." Jonathan evilly spoke the title making the car quickly seem eerily.

"I'm not too scared! Mike's making me come over!" Will argued as Betty pressed her lips together. "Excuses," She smiled forward as her and Jonathan shared a smile, pulling into the school parking lot. The three unbuckled their seatbelts and grabbed their bags as they exited the car. Jonathan mumbled something about how Will needed to stay on the school grounds until his Mom would come pick him up. Will obviously obliged as he gave Betty a hug and waved off Jonathan, his friends waiting for him by the bike rack.

Jonathan threw his messenger bag over his shoulder as he turned towards Betty. "Ready?" Her eyes were peeled from the girls pushed against the car whispering nonsense about guys and their stupid lips. Sometimes she wished she was like them, with friends, I mean. Don't get me wrong, she wouldn't trade anything in the world to give up Jonathan. But sometimes... she wished she were normal.

"Yeah," She smiled softly as the two made their way down the small hill and towards the road keeping the high school and middle school apart. An accelerated Camaro is what made Betty's eyes widen as she stepped back into the grass, the crazy driver already annoying her. She glanced over at Jonathan who was still stood in the road, his eyes fixated on a car in the parking lot. Betty internally groaned without even glancing who was in the car, she had a feeling. "Jonathan!"

He snapped out of it as he stepped back into the grass, barely missing the driver who was blasting the Scorpions out of his car. "I was-" Jonathan stumbled as he cleared his throat and Betty glanced over to see Nancy Wheeler and Steve Harrington stepping out of the car. Nancy came around the car and placed her hand on his arm as she spoke intimately to him. It was like Betty could hear her best friend's heart break.

The thoughts going through Betty's head were like an open book for Jonathan. He knew she hated Nancy, just like she hated everyone else. He ran up to catch her as he let out a sigh. "You don't know her. She's, she's so much more than a girl dating a douche. Okay? And I don't like her. She's a friend. Just a friend... and Steve, well he's not as- I mean. He's okay."

"Are you really trying to defend King Steve? The same guy who broke your camera last year? Same guy who you got in a fight with in an alley? Called you names? Called us names? Jon, seriously. I love you but..." Betty stopped walking as they approached the school doors. Her hands pressed his chest lightly as he stopped and glanced down at her. "Please don't fall for her. Your hearts just gonna break, okay? You don't deserve that."

The two stared at one another for another moment. His eyes glanced over at the girl walking towards them and the arm around her. With a sigh, he nodded. The long haired girl smiled with empathy as they walked through the doors and the bells rang.

BETTY JONES LOVED SCHOOL don't get her wrong. There was something about learning and the ability to expand her mind that made her intrigued. It was the same way she was with reading. She just couldn't get enough. So to say she was not enjoying Mr. Bukowski's science class was a... false positive.

"Distinguished between longitude - transverse waves their means are transferring energy. Hopefully you can remember the law conseveration of energy... Miss. Buckley." The man's voice sterned the last words making Betty glance up from her notes. The teacher's eyes lay directly on the girl just the next row to Betty. All eyes laid on her.

Her brunette hair was wavy, just reaching her shoulders. There was something about the Bob Dylan shirt that cling to her chest and her purple trousers which didn't even remotely match. Betty didn't let herself loose focus in the girl who seemed far too impressed with the clock, rather their interesting professor.

Class was over too soon for Betty's liking. It was the one time during the day where she wasn't expected to converse with other students. Or she didn't have to dodge basketballs or mashed fucking potatoes. She just listened and learned. It was a pretty good schedule.

With one hand on her leather backpack on her back and the other by her side. She made her way down the hallway towards her locker. Jonathan was stood there as always, his legs crossed as his back was pressed to the locker beside hers. Which so conveniently happened to be Nancy Wheeler's.  "Time of your life?"

"It was actually really interesting, you nerd." The girl laughed as she placed her backpack in her locker. She turned towards the boy who was rolling his eyes at her. "It'll be interesting whenever he pulls out one of the Beatles"

"Yeah-" Betty's words were interrupted by a perky short haired girl. A smile present on her lips as she handed a flyer to Betty's best friend. "You're coming to this."

Betty didn't even begin to try redeeming their conversation as Jonathan got lost in the face of the pretty girl. He glanced down at the flyer, chuckling up at her as he read aloud. "Come and get sheet faced? Yeah, no."

"I can't let you sit alone on Halloween, that's just not acceptable." Nancy smiled as she glanced over at Betty, who was watching the two. "And you come too, Betty. It'll be fun you guys."

"Relax, Nancy. We're not gonna be alone. Two people - Betty and I, that is not being alone. We're gonna take Will trick-or-treating." Jonathan pressed his lips together as Betty reached for her walkman in her locker. "All night?"

"Yeah," Jonathan nodded as he watched his best friend unravel up her headphones. A sigh escaping his lips as he turned back towards Nancy who watched him look at her. "Well, that's not true. You're gonna be home by 8:00 listening to the Talking Heads and reading Vonnegut or something."

"Sounds like a nice night," Jonathan commented knowing Betty would never be up for a party. Especially with Nancy Wheeler and her friends. He would never do something without Betty nonetheless go to a party. "Oh come on, it'll be fun you guys. Betty, I'd love to get to know you more."

The long haired girl looked up from her walkman as she gave Nancy one of her small smiles. Betty shut her locker and turned towards Jonathan. "Jonathan? Maybe you'll meet someone-" The attempt of changing the duo's mind was suddenly taken as a long haired boy in sunglasses came up around Betty and grabbed Nancy Wheeler from behind. Her giggles made Betty sigh as she turned towards Jonathan who was giving her a
sad look. The blue eyed girl knew Nancy's words pained him. The girl he had a crush on, who he was friends with, was in love with "The King of Hawkins High". It hurt.

"Oh my God, take those stupid things off." Nancy laughed as she pointed at his sunglasses on his face. Despite being in the middle of a high school. "I missed you," Steve pouted. Betty batted her eyelashes as she watched the two. Her eyes glanced back up at Jonathan, her thoughts still remaining on him as she spoke up."No thanks to the party Nancy, but thanks for the invite." Betty responded politely as she grabbed Jonathan's hand and dragged them both down the hallway and out of the school. Leaving Nancy Wheeler and Steve Harrington to themselves, just like it should be.
