chapter 1

aonung softly hit the side of your head as you roll your eyes at him, "c'mon, it's not that hard to make me another knife!"

'why do you need another knife?' you sign to your brother, annoyance being displayed on your face. aonung had been following you all day for two reasons. one, your dad had made it his turn to look after you today as he had many of the hunters and warriors of the clan currently out since there was a sighting of a certain tulkun around the reef. and two, he wanted you to make him another knife even though you had made him one the week before.

"aonung, just leave her alone," rotxo said from beside aonung. rotxo had joined the both of you when he had passed by, wanting to hang out with his friends. you nodded your head in agreement at rotxo's words.

"why though? i want another one and i like the one she makes over our mom's," aonung said. he displayed the akula tooth he had in his hand, "i need a way to display this kill i got!"

'i can make you something else,' you sign to your brother, smacking his head as pay back for earlier and snatching the tooth from his hand. you give yourself a moment to admire the tooth, letting your thumb run over the smooth surface as you got up from your seated position. you walked toward the dried plants that you had laid out by your family marui pod, and used your hand to scan through the various stems there. aonung and rotxo were not too far behind you, with their arms crossed as you finally decided on a stem of a plant that was strong enough to be made into twine. you grab a leather bag and place the twine and the akula tooth into the bag, turning and signing to the two boys 'let's go to the seawall!'

"the seawall? that's so far!" aonung complained, rotxo shaking his head.

"it's not that far, you just don't want to swim over," rotxo says. you nod your head again at his words.

"let's just go to the sandbars, they're out today," aonung pointed out, motioning to the patches of sand that popped out from underneath the ocean, laying out to dry and in the sun.

you stare at the area for a second, admiring the colours of the scenery and the bright sun, before you walk over to the sandbars. slightly skipping along the rubbery bridges of the pathways of awa'atlu to reach your destination. you feel the warm sand in between your toes, the sun wraps itself around your skin that now wrapped around you. looking behind you to make sure aonung and rotxo were following you, you send them a smile as you settle into the sand. you take out the items that you had placed in your bag earlier, laying them out on to a small cloth that you keep in your bag. a needle that you had also kept in your bag was taken out as you get the akula tooth and start to slowly carve a hole at the top of the tooth, to make it easier for you to thread the twine through it later.

as you start your work, aonung and rotxo find their way next to you, each one sitting on either side of you. both of them were carefully watching you work, as you spent time making the hole into the tooth. when you had finally got the hold to get through two different sides of the tooth, you held it up and displayed it to aonung and rotxo, looking at either side of you to send both of them smiles.

"ok, so you drilled a hole into my tooth? what do i do with that?" aonung asked, looking at you with a confused look. you replied with rolled eyes, laying the tooth on the cloth before grabbing the twine and holding it up to aonung.

'hold still and let me measure this around your neck,' you sign with the twine tightly in your hands.

"you're not gonna choke me, right?"

"this is (y/n) we're talking about, she's not going to choke you," rotxo said for you. you sent him back a thankful look as you shuffle on your knees behind aonung. laying the twine loosely on his chest, you constantly looked back and forth between the front and back of your brother, seeing if you liked the length the twine was at. finally being satisfied with how the twine would look around aonung, you shuffled back to the spot you were before. you sawed a bit at twice the length you wanted with aonung's knife that you had grabbed without his permission. then grabbing the akula tooth, you thread the twine through the hole and present your work once again.

"you made me a necklace?" aonung asked, seemingly full of questions today. you nod your head and motion for him to come closer for you to put it on him. luckily, he does what you ask and allows you to place the necklace on to him. he turns to you and you feel yourself brighten up at the sight of the necklace you made for your brother looking decent on him.

'do you like it?' you ask, waiting with excitement for his answer.

"yeah, looks as good as the other things you've made me," he says with a smile while looking down at his chest.

"(y/n)! you should make me something too. i should get teeth from my hunts for you to use," rotxo said with a smile. though he already had a necklace made from the shells that come from the beach, it was obvious to you that he wanted something similar to what aonung had. though you weren't sure if he wanted to match your brother or not.

you excitedly nodded your head at him while reached down to wrap up the cloth, and placing it into your bag. getting up, your ears twitch a bit at the sound of a conch blowing through the air, meaning someone was calling for an emergency clan meeting. that's when in the corner of your eye you spot a bunch of flying creatures heading toward your beaches. you look to aonung with a furrowed eyebrows, not knowing what to do. but he wasn't looking at you and was looking to see where the flying creatures would land. aonung had abruptly got up without a word, and started to head to the beach where the creatures landed. you shared a look with rotxo, him looking a bit confused as well before he got up and started following aonung, softly grabbing your wrist.

"c'mon, you know you can't be left alone. plus, it looks urgent," rotxo says while pulling you along. you nod your head, letting him lead you toward the large group of na'vi that was slowly forming.

when you got there, the others in the metkayina clan separated in order to let you, aonung and rotxo directly to the group of na'vi with aonung leading you three. aonung had an intense look on his face, you knew since your father and mother weren't here yet aonung would have to be the one to face the commotion as he was next in line to be olo'eyktan. he made a beeline toward two boys that looked different from the metkayina people.

the two had darker skin, their arms, legs, and tails look to be much thinner than yours. although you had followed aonung and rotxo to be right behind the other boys, you had spent most of your time looking at the two, studying how they looked. when you looked up toward their faces, you spotted the short one of the two looking at you. that's when you realized there was another obvious difference between the two of you.

his eyes were yellow, bright like the sun and darker than the sand that you saw everyday. compare to your eyes that mirrored the ocean, his eyes mirrored the stars in the sky. he somehow entranced you, but you shook your head to snap back into the real world, only to be sucked back in with one word.

"hey," he said with a smile and an awkward wave, looking into your own wide eyes. you waved back, with words themselves being something you lacked in. the little interaction was interrupted by rotxo's voice.

"it's so small, how are they supposed to swim?" he said. you looked over to him to see that he was motioning the other boy's tail. you couldn't tell if he words were coming from concern of if he was teasing the boy, but you walked over and tapped his shoulder. when he looked over to you, you signed stop, your face expressing the need for him not to say anything else. aonung, who had also looked over, shook his head and used his arm to gather you and rotxo up and walk toward the front of the group of metkayina.

"dad is here, let him deal with this," aonung said, looking back at the full group of dark blue na'vi that were there. you looked back as well, finally noticing the rest of the group that equaled to six. when you turned you head back foward, tsireya had joined your group, her hair noticeably wet as she had come from the water. she had taken you from aonung's arm and linked your arm with hers, patiently waiting for your father to take care of the situation at hand.

speaking of your father, he had quickly flown in on his skimwing, seamlessly crashing into the water in order to walk on to the beach. he had his spear held on tight, as he walked toward the six and greeted the group. many greetings were exchanged, you notice the boy that you had shared eye contact with was even participating but after the taller one bumped into his shoulder. you turn to aonung, tapping on his shoulder so his attention would be on you.

'should we be greeting them?' you sign. tsireya, noticing what you signed to your brother, spoke up.

"i think we should," she says while smiling. aonung, who was about to open his mouth, was interrupted.

"no. do not go up to them," your mother's voice infiltrates your conversation. the four of you look at her as she has her head up high, as if she was looking down on your four. "especially you (y/n), you do not know the dangers they can bring."

you look at your mother with a confused look with a bit of guilt behind it, knowing you had already technically gone against her words. tsireya places a hand on your shoulder as a sign of comfort, knowing that your mother was restricting you from yet another thing. your mother soon walked away from your group, the metkayina people making way for her as she walked up to the dark blue na'vi. the four of you walked forward a bit, finding your place behind tonowari, on the side ronal was not on.

your parents and who you learnt to be jake sully, or how you knew him as toruk makto, and his family engaged in a long conversation. jake sully talked about how his family was seeking shelter and some time was spent on your mother berating jake sully and some of his kids. calling them demons, one of them being the boy from earlier. seeing how your mother handled him and his sister made your heart hurt, wondering why he wasn't taking his hand out of your mother's grip. the realization hitting you later when the youngest crawled into jake sully's arms as he begged for your father to let them stay. your parents had a silent conversation with their eyes, something that they tend to do a lot when they didn't want any of you to hear what they were talking about.

then your father suddenly speaks, turning around to face the rest of the metkayina people to let them hear your mother's decision, "toruk makto and his family will stay with us. treat them as our brothers and sisters, they do not know the sea. so they will be like babies, taking their first breath. teach them our ways so they do not suffer the shame of being useless." that statement had the sully family burst out, saying thank you to your parents.

"my son aonung and our daughter tsireya, will show your children what to do," your father says, motioning to the two. tsireya stepped up in excitement while you looked between the sully family and your father in confusion. you step up as well, waving your hand to grab his attention but aonung got to him first.

"father, why do I-" aonung starts before he is interrupted.

"it has been decided," your father says, not letting aonung go on. before he is able to look away, you jump into his point of view, your hand still shaking.

'what about me?' you sign, looking between your father and your mother, knowing that she had some influence in what you couldn't do.

"tsireya, take them to their marui pod. aonung, you too. (y/n), we will talk after they leave," your mother says sternly, looking toward your siblings. tsireya nods and drags aonung beside her, rotxo not too far behind the two.

"come! i will show you our village," tsireya said with a smile, hoping to direct the sully family's attention away from you and your parents. you look at the group as you make eye contact with the same yellow eyes from earlier. you sent him a smile and he sent your another awkward wave as he walked toward tsireya with all of his belongings.
