ย ย ย ย ย ย ย TWIGS WHIPPED HARDLY INTO HER FACE, while the brunette dashed through the large forest.
Her breath was rapid and tears whelmed up in her blue eyes, because off the pain that came from the twigs, whipping against her cheeks.
But this pain was nothing compared to what she had gone through already.
The girl could feel the bow and arrow pressed tightly against her back, while she tightened her grip on the knives she held in each of her hands.
The brunette could feel the cold metal handles warming as she jumped over a couple of big trees, that laid in her way.
Million of thoughts rushed through her head, when suddenly a scream pierced through the air, making them all disappear at once.
Kathryn immediately stopped running and her whole body tensed up. Her eyes were wide opened while her head snapped back and forth between the many trees.
At some point her feet moved forward again. Even though her mind was totally paralyzed, she followed the screams to a large river.
The flat earthy ground changed into a gigantic stone area and the brunette could hear the water rushing through them.
"Moore, I know you're here!", Taylor, the blonde girl from two shouted over the stones. Kathryn tiptoed carefully around them, making sure to be quiet.
She peeked over one of the stones and saw that Taylor, the girl from two, who stood with her back towards her, had her Ally from twelve as captive.
The blonde girl pressed one of her star shaped knives against the young girls throat.
"Come out, come out, wherever you are!", her high, girlish voice reached Kathryn's ear as she still watched her carefully.
The brunette decided to try and get closer and as she had reached them far enough the girl shouted, "I'm here, Taylor!"
Taylor immediately spun around and in that moment Tess, the girl from twelve, freed herself from the blonde's grip and ran towards Kathryn.
Kathryn didn't wasted another second and immediatley threw her knife at Taylor, who fell to the ground as the knife hit her into the forhead.
In that moment Kathryn's eyes shot opened and the brunette sat up in her bed while she screamed out of the top of her lungs.ย
The sweat ran down her face as she in and exhaled loudly, continuing to scream while she kicked her duvet away.
Suddenly a knock on the door interrupted her screaming and she immediately stopped, clearing her throat awkwardly.
The wooden door opened and a small beam of light fell inside, followed by her little sister, who stuck her head into the room.
"Kathryn, are you all right?", her sister questioned her worried, when she arrived by her side.
The brunette looked at her younger sister, pressed her lips to a thin line and slowly nodded her head. She stretched her arm out and signaled her sister to come and sit down besides her.
Her sister carefully sat down beside her and Kathryn placed her blanket over both of them, before they cuddled up to each other.
"It was just a bad dream", she assured Natalie with a soft voice.
"Just a bad dream", she quietly repeated her words as she patted her sisters shoulder and stared off into the darkness of her room.
"You have a lot of bad dreams", her sister stated quietly as she also stared into the darkness.
Kathryn remained silent and after a while her sister spoke up again, her voice sleepy, "Is it because of the games?"
The brunette sighed quietly, still staring into the darkness, "Always."
The two remained cuddling in silence and her sister soonly fell into a deep sleep. Kathryn on the other side remained wide awake the rest of the night.ย
The very next morning, the sun finally came out in District four. Kathryn's family was already on their feet, preparing themselves for the speech President Snow was to held later in TV.
Kathryn made her way down the stone stairs, already dressed for the day. She had just reached the end of the stairs she could already hear Finnicks soft voice.
It sounded like he spoke with her mother in the large kitchen, so Kathryn entered the room hesitantly.
As soon as the young woman had joined the two, they both fell silent and looked at her.
A large smile immediately made it's way onto Finnicks face and the young man made his way around the kitchen counter, "Morning Kathy."
He stretched out his arms and Kathryn smiled warmly at him before the two hugged. "Hello, Finnick."
The man leaned back, his arm still slung around her neck, before he took a large step back, "I was just talking with your mother about President Snows upcoming speech."
Kathryn's mother nodded her head in agreement as she continued to prepare breakfast.
Finnick nodded his head as well before he placed his hands behind his back, his eyes darting back to Kathryn, "May the Odds be in the favor of the new tributs this year."
Kathryn scoffed before she sat down besides the table, looking at him seriously, "Truth is, the Odds are never in anyone's favor."
Finnick eyed her with a sad look in his eyes, "Indeed." He turned to her mother again, a small smile on his lips, "I better be going Mrs. Moore. Mags needs my help, we're watching the speech together."
The woman smiled at him warmly, "Thank you for coming by and bringing me the bread Finnick. It was good seeing you."
"It was good seeing you too, Mrs. Moore", the young man answered her. His gaze lingered one last time on Kathryn before he gave her wink, "Kathy."
The young woman smiled at him, a blush on her face, "Finnick." He stepped out of the house and the door closed behind him.
Kathryn's gaze moved towards the table and she stared at it, while playing with one of the knives her mother had just used.
Her mother watched her from the kitchen counter, "He's a very nice young man." Kathryn rolled with her eyes as she smiled a bit to herself, "I know."
Her mother continued cutting the bread, "And he clearly has feelings for you, dear."
Kathryn's breath hitched in her throat before she turned towards her mother starstruck. But then she shook her head and chuckled, "You're insane. Finnick would never see me that way."
IN THE AFTERNOON the whole Moore family had gathered in the living room. Kathryn fell onto the couch besides her brother Grayson and her sister Natalie.
The screen went on and Presidents Snow appeared, a serious expression on his how Kathryn would say stupid face.
A feeling of rage immediately rushed through Kathryn's body. God, she hated that man with every part of her soul and body.
The white haired man stepped forward and looked directly into the camera, before he started his speech.
"Ladies ans Gentlemen, this is the 75th year of the Hunger Games and it was written in the charter of the Games that every 25 years, there would be a Quarter Quell."
He made a pause before he continued. "To keep fresh for each new generation the memory of those who died in the uprising against The Capitol. Each Quarter Quell is distinguished by Games of a special significance", Kathryn listen to the man as she slowly leaned forward in her seat.
"And now on this the 75th anniversary of our defeat of the rebellion, we celebrate the 3rd Quarter Quell as a reminder that even the strongest cannot overcome the power of the Capitol", Snow made another short pause before he continued.
"On this, the 3rd Ouarter Quell Games, the male and female tributes are to be reaped from the existing pool of Victors in each district."
Kathryn's breath immediately hitched in her throat, it felt like she would choke. In the background, she could hear the disbelieving shouts from her siblings and the sorrowful cries from her mother.
Like a machine, Kathryn slowly got onto her feet. "Victors shall present themselves on Reaping Day regardless of age, stage of healtโ"
Kathryn's gaze fell onto her two younger siblings, who stared at her like they were paralyzed.
Her heart hammered hardly in her chest and the feeling of sickness overcame the young woman immediately.
She slowly approached the door and threw it open before she stummbled out of the large Victor house.
The snow crumpled beneath her feet and her breath rose into the air as white fog.
The woman run down the small path that lead through the Victors village, down to the docks were the many fishing ships were anchord.
Tears run down her cheek and she felt like she was gonna choak as she finally sunk to her knees and let out loud whimpers.
Her chest trembled and Kathryn let out a heartbreaking scream after the other, which echoed over the half frozen water.
The brunette remained sitting there, crying loudly before suddenly two strong and warm arms wrapped around her trembling body.
Kathryn already wanted to start fighting the person off but then she heard Finnicks familiar voice in her ear, "It's okay. It's going to be okay."
The brunette's body went limp and she leaned into him as they both sat down completely.
Kathryn still breathed heavily as she leaned her head into the crook of Finnicks neck, her forehead touching his chin.ย
The two remained sitting there for a while and at some point Kathryn had finally stopped crying, the tears had dried on her cheeks.
"Nothing will be fine โI'm going back", she stated hopelessly as she looked up into his face.
Finick frowned at her immediately , "But you're not the only femal Tribute from our disโ"
Kathryn shook her head as she interrupted him, her eyes still staring into his, "Don't be stupid Finnick. Mags can't and Annieโ she wouldn't survive a single day."
The blonde man remained silent as they watched how the sun shone down onto the sea and made the ice glimmer.
This was the moment, Finnick decided that what ever it would take, he would make sure that Kathryn got out alive.
It didn't took long before Finnick brought Kathy back to her house.
The two strolled through the snowy Victors village and as they arrived, Finnick spoke up again.
"Kathy, everything will be fine", he repeated his words from earlier and the brunette sighed hopelessly. "I have a hard time believing that."
Their eyes met and for a moment a warm feeling spread through Kathryn's stomach.
"I'll see you tomorrow", the woman stated as she stepped into the house.
"See you tomorrow", Finnick answered her before Kathryn carefully closed the door.
That night Kathryn remained sleepless again, her siblings and mother all staying with her.
In the morning the brunette got into a couple of her finest close, brushed her hair and put it up into a ponytail before she met her mother and her siblings downstairs.
The brunette took Grayson and Natalie by their hands before they all walked through the village, towards the Reaping.
The whole village was there and the Moore family took their place in the crowd, while Kathryn was accompanied to her's by the Peacekeepers.
The brunette slowly took her place next to Annie Crester and Mags, while she stared at the large crowd infront of her.ย
"Welcome, welcome. As we celebrate the 75th anniversary and 3rd Quarter Quell of the Hunger Games. As always, ladies first", Axena's voice suddenly spoke through the microphone and pulled Kathryn out of her daze.ย
Axena hadn't even finished her scentence before a look of sorrow flashed over her face. The woman slowly moved over to the bowl from the female Tributes, where three papers laid in.
Axena shot Kathryn one last worried look before she finally reached into the bowl and fished out one of the three papers.
She slowly walked back to the microphone before she spoke up again, "The femal Tribute from District 4โ"
She carefully opened the paper before she looked up again, "Annie Crester."
The redhead started crying as she slowly forced herself to walk into the middle of the stage.
Kathryn's eyes flashed over the crowd and landed on her family, who all looked up at her, already sensing what would happen now.
"Wonderful, and now the men", Axena said, but suddenly Kathryn turned towards Axena, her mouth moving faster than she could think.
"I volunteer as a tribute."
The crowd immediately started to mumur, but Kathryn only straightened up before she slowly walked over to Axena and Annie.
The young redhead gave her a sorrow look before she sniffed loudly, "Thโthank you."
"It's gonna be okay", the brunette assured Annie with tears in her eyes before she led her back to her place. Max gave Kathryn a sympathetic look.
Axena nodded her head as she stood next to her again, "Good then, the femal Tribute from District 4, Kathryn Moore!"
The people all stared at her with wide eyes, even though Axena was already continuing with the male tributes.
The woman positioned herself infront of the microphone after she had drawn the paper for the men and put on a forced smile, "The male tribute from District 4.โย Finnick Odair!"
The blonde man immediately broke out of the line form the male victors of District four and joined Axena and Kathryn in the middle of the stage, smiling.
Kathryn still stared into the cowd, a hopeless expression plastered on her face as Axena continued her act. "Very well, the Tributes from District 4. Kathryn Moore and Finnick Odair!"
There was complete silence and Axena sighed, "Well, what remains isโ"
Suddenly a couple of people and Kathryn's family started to raise their hands into the air and formed the sign of rebellion with their hands, as did all the other people from District four.
Kathryn's heart felt heavy as her gaze remained on her family. The brunette then kissed and raised her hand into the air as well.
Suddenly she was grabbed harshly by her arm and dragged towards the large door behind them.
"Wait! No, no, no, wait! I get to say goodbye!", Kathryn started arguing with the Peacekeeper that dragged her away.
"Kathryn!", the desperate screams of her sister and brother reached her ear.
"New plan. Straight to the train", the man under the uniform informed her coldly.ย "No, I have to say goodbye!", Kathryn shouted as she tried to wiggle out of his grip and looked back at her family.
"No!"
"Kathryn!"
"Noo!"
And with that the large door closed right behind her.
