Trials
THREE WEEKS HAVE PASSED BY. Genevieve hasn't told Jasper what the cause of her immortality was, not that Jasper was pressuring her to say to him about it because he, too, was yet to tell her about his horrid past. She wanted to be honest, and she tried to tell him everything. To move on from her past, she needs to open up.
They were currently on the balcony in Jasper's bedroom. Enjoying the fresh breeze from the forest, Jasper could tell that something was bothering her.
"What are you thinking about, darlin'?" He asks while turning her around to face him, his hand cupping her face while his other hand was tucking in a loose strand of hair behind her ear.
"I want to tell you everything," she mutters under her breath while looking at him while fiddling with her fingers.
"You don't have to if you don't want to," he says, his face full of worry and concern.
"We've been together for more than a month now, and you won't fully get to know me if I haven't told you what happened," She says with a soft smile.
"We have eternity, darlin'," he tells her with a soft smile.
"I know, but I'm ready. It will be like a weight that was lifted off my shoulders, and I need to get it out. Nobody really knows our story, not even the other vampires that we dated back then," she says.
He gently grabbed her hand and led her to the new bed that he bought if they ever just wanted to feel human and close their eyes.
"You can tell me if you're ready. Take your time," he gently tells her. She takes a deep breath and starts. She held his hand tightly while Jasper gave him an encouraging smile.
"It all started in the year 1688. We were 15 at the time. The witch hunt was already happening. We were at our house eating dinner. When the townspeople went to our doorstep, they accused my mother of witchcraft because she healed a man with an incurable illness. They said it was the devil's work that not even the town's doctor knows how she did it, but she did," She faces Jasper and continues.
"So they took her to the courthouse, many people took a vote against her, they chained her and blindfolded her, they led us to the forest, where a stake was waiting for our mother and the other accused men and women."
"We didn't know what to do. We were only kids. We were terrified. We knew what would happen to her, but we couldn't do anything."
"So we watched her get dragged and get tied up at stake, she was crying and begging them to give her mercy, but they had already decided, so they lit up the stake. She screamed our names and told us that she loved us dearly and that no matter what, we should always stick together. We watched her burn slowly. Their screams of pain echoed around the forest until what was only left of her was her body's ashes. One by one, the people left. The Governor gave us a look that meant that the same thing would happen to us if we followed our mother's footsteps, but really there isn't a thing to follow," she stopped and closed her eyes shut. Jasper pulls her closer to him and hugs her tightly, and pecks the side of her head.
"So we were orphans. Our father died when we were ten because of tuberculosis. There was no proper treatment at that time. So Greyson and I were living in the town, some sort of evacuation house. We reached the age of 17 we were kicked out of the house. They said we were old enough to fend for ourselves, so we were homeless. So we tried everything just to earn money or just have enough money to buy a loaf of bread that we could eat that lasted for an entire week. Greyson worked at the graveyard while I became a maid for the Governor's wife. We lived in fear because we knew that the council was watching our every move waiting for us to do the "devil's work." When I reached the age of 19, I heard voices. The shadows were telling me that I should watch my back. I thought that I was seeing or hearing things, but they said that I was special and I should be thankful," She told him while her hand made a black ball, and she quickly crushed it.
"I told Greyson everything, and he believed me. He said I wasn't crazy that we would go through this together. He feared for my safety all the time. He didn't want to watch me get captured and executed, he wanted me to stay at our little wooden cottage and stay hidden from the townspeople, but that will only cause suspicion of my sudden disappearance."
"I was cleaning when I overheard the Governor's wife talking about my mother. She said she was glad that my mother was burned, and I learned that she was jealous of my mother because his husband had an infatuation with our mother. That she was also the one who told the council about her. I told Greyson everything. He said not to do anything about it that it had already happened, and we'll have our revenge someday."
"I was walking in the village when a boy liked me. He said I was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen and that he was eyeing me from afar. He started courting me. Of course, I was naive at the time, and I thought it was love. He invited us to their house then his older sister took a liking to Greyson, we lived with them, but the shadow warning only worsened at the time, but I didn't listen; I was," her fingers made a quoting sign, "-in love," she laughs lightly while shaking her head then she intertwines her hands with Jasper's.
"Greyson and I argued if I should tell Henry about the shadows. He told me that what if Henry went to the council and told them about my ability or power and got accused of witchcraft like our mother the council was watching us since the beginning since our mother was accused of witchcraft, they only needed more evidence on top of our insanely good looks" she says then stopped and asked him, "You always like my hair and my other features right?" He only nods in response.
"Our looks were too..."
"-what do you say, um...too inhumanly beautiful? With our jet black hair, our deep blue eyes that are mesmerizing, and our pale white skin, it only added more to their suspicions."
"I didn't listen to Greyson, I was too blinded by Henry, and it's a one-sided relationship, so I told Henry about the shadows. He let me believe he won't tell the council, and I trusted him. We didn't know that from the start, he and his sister were spying on us and reporting everything we did to the council," her voice was harshly laced with hatred. Jasper could only hug her tightly, showing her that he was listening and that he was there for her.
"The four of us were at the house, doing our daily chores, the shadows whispered to me to get away and hide, but I was too late when we heard a mob coming straight to the house. Greyson and I were clueless about what was happening until they yelled at us that I was a witch and I was a spawn of the witch that was burned four years ago. I looked at Henry, and he was smiling. I saw him get paid by the Governor because he caught a witch. I was heartbroken and betrayed, so they took me against my will," Her voice cracked, and her eyes were glossed with tears that will never fall.
"I was in the same situation as my mother back then. We were in the courthouse. They said that I admitted that I was doing the dark magic, so they blindfolded me and chained me. They voted whether I was to be burned at the stake or be hanged. They chose hanging. I was with the other 18 accused people who are also to be hanged. We were walking towards the forest. Greyson broke off from their hold. He tried to free me, but a pitchfork stabbed him. I was badly beaten up. We were weak. Closer to death's door," she said while moving closer to Jasper burying her head at his chest while Jasper's hand gently stroked her hair, trying his best to calm her down.
"Then somebody saved us she carried us to safety, but we were already weak so she turned us into the vampires, we were thankful to her she explained everything to us about what we are, what we eat and what we should know about our kind, she said that she saw potential power on us and that she will help us with our revenge.
We took our revenge. The night we woke up from our transition, I surrendered myself to the council while Greyson watched on the sidelines, I was the one they wanted in the first place, so I was the only one who went to the council. We were so eager to get our revenge and to make the plan work that we ignored our bloodlust. They led me to the forest, where I saw the 18 accused men and women that were still hanged, so I was hanged, and I pretended that I was choking from the hold of the rope on my neck. I waited until sunrise. The bodies were brought down, including mine, and we started our revenge. We killed everyone at sight, and then I went to the Governor's wife. I choked her to death; I didn't want her filthy blood in my system. We saved the traitor siblings for last, and we tortured them to death. Their blood wasn't tempting to us, it was disgusting, and it smelled rotten. The people that we killed were recorded as one of the outcomes of the executions of the Witch Hunt, not that they were killed by vampire twins who were hungry for revenge," She ends her story and untangling herself from Jasper's hold and standing up, not meeting Jasper's eyes, she felt disgusted with herself that she killed so many people, but she didn't regret it one bit.
"Darling, you do know that your past didn't affect anything that we have now. You felt betrayed, angry, and heartbroken. I can't blame you for taking revenge on the people who did you and your brother wrong," He says while walking towards her and hugging her from behind while he pecks the back of her head. She leans to his chest and sighs.
"I did many things in the past that I regret deeply, but the revenge that I did when I was a newborn. I didn't regret it one bit," she says while looking up at him.
"I know that, darlin', and I won't hold that against you," he says while turning her around to face him. He cups her face, leans down, and places a kiss on her lips.
"Where were you all this time when I needed you?" She whispers to him.
"I was waiting for you and letting fate decide whether or not it was the right time for us to be together finally, but I'm here now, and I'm never letting you go," he says to her with a soft smile.
The Cullens arrived at the house just in time when Genevieve started her and her brother's story. Greyson had already told Alice what happened a week ago, but the others didn't know. They couldn't help but feel sad about what was the cause of the twin's immortality.
"Thank you," she says to him.
"For what?" He asks her, confused about why she was thanking him.
"For listening to me and accepting my past," she says. "Darlin', it's my job as your mate to help and support you through everything," he tells her while pulling her closer to his body, leaving no space in between.
"I'm so lucky to have you," she whispers.
"I think it's the other way around, darlin'," he says and asks, "What happened to your creator?"
She sighed and looked up at him, and gave him a sad smile.
"A story for another time,"
"Alright, darlin', whenever you're ready," he says while hugging her tighter and sending calming waves to her.
