MAX HAD GOTTEN BACK to the hotel room late last night when isabel was asleep. now it was morning and he had somewhat of a hangover, so he watched over her shoulder as she scrolled through twitter.
"stop torturing yourself," he mumbled, arm loosely over her waist.
"it is funny," she said, scrolling through a few more tweets. "people keep bringing up our exes like that means something."
max rolled his eyes, "of course they are, jesus christ."
isabel remembered max's ex a little too well. her name was kailey and she was an english model that he had met at a red bull party in milton keynes. she was incredibly obnoxious, but isabel's tipping point in being near her in the paddock had been after a rough race between her and max. kailey had approached her, in front of everyone, and starting dishing out insults for 'being mean' to her boyfriend. isabel had been fined for pushing her harshly into a pole and bruising her back but she was happy to pay every bit of it because kailey deserved it.
it turns out that kailey had only been using max for access to the paddock anyway, so they broke up after barely a year.
isabel giggled, "i think i'm a huge upgrade from kailey."
"ugh," max groaned, "don't remind me of her."
"it was funny when i pushed her, though," isabel sighed wistfully. "man, those were the times."
"i think it is funny now," max agreed with her. he'd had a few more exes but they weren't as memorable as the mess that kailey was. "hey, are you leaving today?"
isabel nodded, "yeah," she set her phone down and tried to roll over so that she was facing him. it took her a few seconds, but she managed. "i'm going to singapore still."
"i'm leaving tomorrow," max mentioned, "but if you're going alone, i can change it, if you want."
"luca's picking me up, but thanks," isabel finally made eye contact with him. "i have to do a bunch of tests and checks if i want to race."
"and you do want to race," max pointed out.
"i do," isabel said immediately. "it's the one race i've been looking forward to all year."
max couldn't stop her, he knew that, but that doesn't mean he thought it was a good idea. marina bay was a physically demanding circuit, and if you weren't in the best possible condition, it was near impossible to drive. he also knew that isabel was aware of that, and that she was stubborn enough to push through it.
"hm, okay," max tilted his head forward to kiss her forehead. "just— just listen to luca and try not to die."
"uh huh, sure," isabel waved off. she cringed and bit down on the inside of her cheek as she forced herself to sit upright without his help.
max's eyes had fluttered shut but he didn't need to see to know she was in pain. "you're stupid," he pulled the blankets up to his chin to get comfortable once again. "like, incredibly stupid."
"grazie," isabel stood up from the bed, rolling her eyes. "the crash left me with no brain cells."
"you had none to start with."
"you're a dick," nonetheless, she laughed, but that laugh quickly melted into a pained expression as she wrapped her arms around myself. "ugh, kill me."

THE FLIGHT WITH LUCA was hell. as much as she deserved the scolding, it had started to get annoying.
twelve hours later when she arrived in singapore, the first thing isabel did was have to sit through a variety of x-rays and more tests.
ISABEL looked up when she noticed luca enter her hotel room. "and?" she asked expectantly.
"i shouldn't let you race," luca said as he crossed the room and sat down on the edge of her bed. "scans came back. everything is slowly starting to heal the right way, so no issues there. but with marina bay, the chances of it getting worse are high. you know what this track's like."
"hm," isabel hummed, thinking over her possible options. either way, she knew driving was gonna hurt, it was just a gamble of whether or not she should go out there and do it. "can i drive fp1 and see what happens? if it is really bad, we can call emilia in." which was not something isabel wanted to do.
"you get half the session," luca decided, "maybe not even that."
isabel nodded, "that's all i need. thank you, luca."
"but," he added, "if it gets worse, you're not racing the next few. i'm serious, belle."
isabel answered him with a nod that she didn't really mean. she knew that once she got into the car and was out on the track, the adrenaline would kick in and she wouldn't feel it at all. that was what she was counting on.
"got it, got it," isabel picked up her phone again. "thanks."

IT HAD BEEN A longer meeting than isabel expected. long enough that when it had started, it was tuesday afternoon, and now it was dark outside.
the meeting she had with stefano domenicali and a few others was about george russell. no one else seemed to be saying anything about him, so isabel took it into her own hands. even though she didn't blame george for her injuries, she still blamed him for the crash. and this was the second bad crash he had been apart of in a few races.
it turns out, the most the fia can do is fine him and give him race bans, which she expected, but zhou guanyu had been lucky to walk away from his crash alive and unhurt. she had been lucky that lando's front wing hadn't killed her instantly on impact.
and even though the meeting felt useless, she had a feeling that they were going to pay better attention now to george, specifically his starts. they were unsafe. if romain grosjean faced consequences for his dangerous driving, then why didn't george?
"HOW DID IT GO?" emilia asked when isabel arrived at her hotel room.
"it was probably a few hours wasted on nothing," isabel shrugged and walked inside. emilia shut the door behind her. "the fia is useless i don't know why i bother to try."
but she did know why. jules had died and it felt like the fia tried to cover it up. she'd lost a close friend in 2019, too, on an unsafe part of the track. she was sick of losing people to this sport, even though she knew the risks of how dangerous it was. there is absolutely no reason for george to be that aggressive on the start and take out everyone with him.
"at least you've said something," emilia walked into the dining area, where two plates were sat in front of a couple of meal options that she had stolen from hospitality. "but you do know that that's not the reason you're here, right?"
isabel groaned. "you're worse than sebastian."
"thanks," emilia flashed her a smile. "so . . . max, huh? it's finally official."
"you know," isabel tried to stop herself from smiling but couldn't. "i thought when you asked me here it was because you were interested in how the meeting went."
emilia giggled, "i was, and you told me. 'the fia suck'," emilia put on a heavy french accent to mock isabel. "now that's over with, tell me about it!"
isabel rolled her eyes, "you're the worst."
"appreciate it!" emilia smiled back.
"I WAS INTERROGATED BY emilia," isabel announced as soon as she walked inside her hotel room. "help— oh, hey," she waved at daniel, who was sitting on the couch.
"evening," daniel greeted.
"hey, belle," max said as he walked out of the kitchen, two red bulls in hand. he handed one to daniel, "yeah, daniel was doing the same."
"all of you live for gossip," isabel sat down beside daniel. "so, what's going on with you, daniel?"
the news had shifted from the mclaren-alpine drama and had instead turned to pierre gasly and alphatauri. they wanted to replace him with colton herta, an indycar racer, but the fia refused to budge on granting him a super licence due to his lack of points. ever since the grand prix in italy where nyck de vries filled in for alex, talks have circulated about nyck filling pierre's seat instead.
daniel shrugged, "not a clue. i haven't been in contact with anyone yet. i think i might take the year off or something and see what happens."
"we should go on a vacation then," isabel suggested. "maybe a road trip. maybe we get the rest of the unemployed together."
laughing, daniel cracked open the red bull can. "we should make a list," he agreed, "but that sounds fun."
max went to sit down when suddenly his phone started ringing. his sister's name flashed across the screen. "one sec," he excused himself and picked up his phone, leaving the room.
"okay," daniel said, turning to face isabel a little more. "you know that joke about owning a team? we could actually do it."
isabel shook her head, "it takes years, daniel. can we even race if—"
"that's the thing," daniel cut her off, "i've looked into it, and there's nothing that says we can't. as long as we've got the licence, we can drive. that's it. and we can drive for any team if we own one, we just have to sign shit that says we don't pass on any other team information or anything."
isabel's face morphed into disbelief as she leaned back. "and you would do it?"
daniel grinned, "absolutely. we have experience with the car stuff, and we can easily find people who are good with the business side. it's just a thought but . . . i reckon it could go somewhere."
"this is insane," isabel mused, "leccardo could actually be real."
this made daniel laugh louder than before. "that name was a joke."
"it's not like we can call a team 'fuck mclaren and lamborghini'," isabel said. "but this is so surreal."
"so what do you say?" daniel held his hand out to her. "possible business partners?"
isabel laughed, shaking her head in disbelief. "i can't believe i'm thinking about this," she shook his hand, "possible business partners," she agreed.
max walked out a minute later, noticing that his girlfriend and best friend were in an exceptionally good mood. "what did i miss?"
isabel and daniel looked at each other, trying to hide their laughter. "nothing, max," she smiled brightly at him. he immediately knew that was bullshit. "come sit, we are watching a movie."

MAX WAS BEGINNING TO notice things.
the scars hadn't reopened to bleed that dark crimson misery in a long time. he felt like they were going to revert back to open wounds at the party in belgium, but the tingling feeling had disappeared and that was it. otherwise, the feeling had pretty much disappeared since monaco.
all that was left were thin white lines now, a reminder of what he had spent his whole life suffering. they were invisible and unseen, but he could always feel them there. however, this time when he felt them, it wasn't a feeling of dread. no, it was the opposite.
maybe it was hope? a hope that things had finally changed for the better?
ever since summer break, he had almost forgotten about the threat of his fsther's calls, but now it had completely disappeared since the afterparty where isabel answered jos' call.
it seemed that isabel had gone from being the problem to being the solution.
everything jos said to him was because of her. isabel had been a threat that needed to be dealt with, and that had manipulated max into manifesting the pure hatred. but that fog had lifted now. now he could see that the dynamic between them should have just been a regular rivalry, not one as toxic as it had gotten. not one as dangerous, as violent, as it was. it was unhealthy, it was problematic, and he now hated every second of it.
so really, jos had been the real problem the whole time and max felt stupid because he let it take over his life and his career.
because sat in between him and a sleeping daniel was isabel, asleep and as peaceful as he had really ever seen her. it was hard to still believe that this is where he ended up with her.
and as much as she still made him want to slam his head into a wall, isabel leclerc wasn't just the irritable sister of his friend anymore, no, a few too many months being forced into the same room as her had made him notice too much. and maybe that was what had changed his mind.
isabel was the only person he knew that fell asleep in an ice bath. she was addicted to subway surfers and was way too good at it. she trained to the black eyed peas, listened to lana del rey pre-race, and fell asleep to the covasettes. she hated wearing high heels. she always wore the four-leaf clover necklace and hid it under her fireproofs during race weekends. her favourite track was marina bay street circuit and she hated suzuka. she had been more into gymnastics than motorsport but fell in love with fast cars and made the switch.
he had noticed all of that in a few months. tori and will's plan had been bullshit but he had ended up learning all that from it.
carefully, max collected isabel up into his arms before standing, lifting her up in the process. he carried her over into a seperate area where the bed was and balanced her in one arm for a moment so that he could pull back the blanket. once he set her down and pulled the blanket back up over her, he went back to where daniel was asked and picked up a spare blanket, covering daniel with it before turning off the tv.
"max?" he heard isabel mumble tiredly when he was near her, her eyes flickering open just enough to see him.
"go back to sleep," he whispered, climbing into bed beside her and settling under the blankets.
"don't i get a goodnight kiss?" even in her tried state, he knew that she was mocking him from the other day in italy.
"will you shut up and sleep if i give you one?"
"mhm."
he chuckled and kissed the corner of her lips. "goodnight, isabel."
"goodnight, max."
