Chapter 16

Rebron found herself in a space between worlds, somewhere between life and death, where everything was both ethereal and timeless. The world around her shimmered with a soft, surreal beauty—lush greens stretched for miles, and the sky above was vast, endless, and untouched by sorrow. She rubbed her head, where the marks of Icicle's claws had slashed through, the sting still fresh but distant here in this peaceful place.

For a moment, she just stood there, taking in the serene landscape. It felt right, as if this was where she was meant to be all along. This was no place of pain or regret—only an infinite calm, a sense of belonging that she hadn't felt before. She smiled, feeling at peace for the first time in what felt like ages. Here, there were no enemies, no battles, no broken hearts—just this endless expanse of tranquility.

But her moment of calm was interrupted by a sudden, sharp movement in the air. She looked up, startled, as a white dragon spiraled down toward her. It was an IceWing, with patches of blue shimmering along its scales. Its wings flared out gracefully as it landed softly in front of her. Rebron tilted her head, watching with curiosity as the dragon's cold, crystalline eyes met hers.

"Who are you?" Rebron called out, her voice a little uncertain but curious.

The IceWing smiled, a serene and knowing smile. "I am Life," it said, its voice soft yet filled with an undeniable power, as though it embodied everything that was natural and eternal.

Before Rebron could respond, another dragon appeared, gliding down through the sky with an eerie presence. This one was dark as the night, its scales a deep shadow with splashes of red staining its wings. Its eyes glowed a haunting, blood-red hue as it landed beside Life, its movements slow and deliberate.

"And I am Death," the dark dragon crooned, its voice rich with an unsettling calm. There was a quiet finality in its tone, as if it had seen countless lives fade and knew exactly what awaited those who crossed its path.

Rebron stepped back slightly, her wings instinctively unfurling as she regarded them both with growing unease. Life and Death, standing together as opposites, yet both so undeniably present in the world. Her eyes flicked between them, searching for some sign of what this meant.

"What... what do you want with me?" she asked, her voice trembling with uncertainty.

Life's expression remained gentle. "You are in the space between," it said, its voice warm and inviting. "Here, you must choose. Life and death are part of the same cycle. Your journey is not yet over, Rebron. You have not yet reached your end."

Death's eyes glinted with a cold light as it spoke next, its voice smooth and filled with weight. "But you have seen the end," it whispered. "You've already tasted it, haven't you? You came so close to crossing over, and yet... you are still here."

Rebron's heart skipped a beat. The idea of choosing between life and death, between staying or letting go, weighed heavily on her. She wasn't sure if she was ready to face either choice. "I... I don't know what to choose," she admitted, her voice small, uncertain.

Life reached out a claw, a gesture of comfort. "You don't have to choose now," it said kindly. "You can still go back. You can still fight. Your path isn't finished, Rebron. You have purpose yet."

Death lingered in the background, a dark and heavy presence, but it didn't push. "But should you choose to leave, your soul will find peace. There is no shame in resting, Rebron. It is the way of all things."

Rebron looked between them, feeling the weight of their words pressing against her chest. She thought of Winter, of her friends, of everything she had left behind. Her mind was clouded, her heart torn. Was she ready to leave it all behind, or did she still have something more to fight for?

The silence stretched, but before she could respond, the world around her seemed to shimmer, as though time itself was waiting for her decision.

Rebron took a deep breath, her heart steadying as she lifted her head with resolve. "I won't let Darkstalker corrupt my world," she declared, her voice firm, a strength that had always been inside her now surfacing in full force. She would not allow her life, her choices, or her world to be defined by his darkness. She refused to be part of a cycle that bound her to him.

Death laughed softly, a low, chilling sound that seemed to resonate from the very air around them. "Oh, darling," the dark dragon crooned, his voice as smooth as velvet and as cold as ice. "He won't corrupt it if you tell him not to. But you see, he loves you too much. That's his downfall."

Rebron flinched at the words, but she stood her ground. She had known this truth for a long time, that Darkstalker's love for her was as dangerous as it was deep. He had always been a dragon of immense power, a dragon who could manipulate anything in his path, but love—his love—was something different. She had felt it, the weight of it, and it had always made her wary.

The black dragon's tail flicked idly, sending a ripple through the air. "So," he purred, "you want to go back to the world of the living, then? To return to them, rather than join me as the queen of all?" His gaze was sharp, almost predatory, as if testing her resolve.

Rebron didn't hesitate. "Yes," she said, her wings twitching as if they were already stretching to fly once more. "My place is with my winglet at Jade Mountain Academy. That's where I belong."

Death's red eyes gleamed with something like amusement, but there was a flicker of respect in them, too. "Ah, Jade Mountain, then," he mused, his voice thick with both disdain and curiosity. "A place of hope, of light, where dragons still fight for the future. But don't think it's going to be simple." He leaned in closer, his breath cold against her scales. "You have no idea what lies ahead."

Rebron smiled, a soft but determined curve of her lips. "I know enough," she said, her voice steady. "I've made my choice. I will face what comes. And I won't let the shadows win."

Life, who had been silent until now, stepped forward, its expression warm and understanding. "You are strong, Rebron," it said, its tone gentle. "The choice you've made is your own. Now go, and let your journey continue. The world of the living still needs you."

Rebron nodded once, a final gesture of resolve. With a deep breath, she spread her wings wide, feeling the air rush around her as she prepared to leave the world between worlds. She glanced back at Death and Life, her gaze steady.

"Thank you," she said quietly, before turning toward the horizon of light. "But my story isn't finished yet."

With that, she leapt into the air, her wings beating against the wind, leaving the space between life and death behind as she flew back toward the world she had fought so hard for, determined to face whatever lay ahead.
