Chapter 1
Reborn hung lazily in the cool stream near Jade Mountain Academy, letting the morning currents wash away her drowsiness. The first day of school at the Dragonets of Destiny's prestigious institution loomed ahead, and despite her usual composure, excitement fluttered in her chest like a thousand tiny dragonflies.
A sudden splash and rush of displaced air upstream made her jump. Looking up, she spotted the unmistakable form of Kinkajou, her scales shifting through cheerful patterns of yellow and pink - a typical morning display for the boisterous RainWing who had become one of her closest friends.
The RainWing's scales rippled with sunshine colors as she spotted Reborn. "First day! First day! Can you believe it?" Kinkajou's enthusiasm practically radiated from her ever-changing scales, which now sparkled with flecks of gold and orange excitement. "I barely slept a WINK! Glory says I was changing colors all night - even in my sleep!"
Reborn laughed warmly, her iridescent scales catching the morning light as she touched wings with her effervescent friend. Unlike Kinkajou's ever-shifting colors, the gesture created a subtle ripple of light across her AllWing scales, like starlight dancing on water.
"I couldn't sleep either," she admitted, pulling herself onto a sun-warmed rock beside the stream. "But I'm so glad we're going together. Did you hear about the NightWing dragonet who's joining us? Moonwatcher, I think they said her name was. Apparently, she's one of the first NightWings raised outside the old kingdom to attend."
Water droplets scattered from her wings like tiny diamonds as she shook them out, her eyes bright with curiosity about their future classmate. Kinkajou's scales shifted to an interested swirl of blue and gold at the mention of the new student, her natural RainWing enthusiasm impossible to contain even when discussing a NightWing.
Kinkajou's scales flashed bright yellow with excitement as she grabbed Reborn's talons. "Come on! They're heading to the academy now!" Her enthusiasm bubbled over like a spring, her tail curling with delight as she practically bounced into the air.
Reborn followed her energetic friend skyward, their wings catching the morning light as they soared toward the edge of the rainforest. There, at the entrance to the winding mountain path, stood Queen Glory herself, her scales a composed swirl of royal purples and greens. Beside her, Deathbringer lounged with his characteristic casual grace, his dark scales gleaming like polished obsidian.
Glory's eyes softened at the sight of Kinkajou's approach, while Deathbringer's gaze fixed on Reborn with that familiar playful glint. He touched his snout to hers in greeting, his movements carrying that same smooth confidence that always set her scales on edge. "You're early, darling," he purred, voice dripping with his usual charm.
Reborn rolled her eyes at his flirtatious manner, an uncomfortable shiver running down her spine. There was something in his demeanor that reminded her too much of Darkstalker - that same magnetic charisma masking something deeper beneath. Even as a valued ally, his similarity to the ancient dragon made her scales itch with unease.
Queen Glory's scales rippled with a hint of amusement at their interaction, though she maintained her regal bearing. The morning sun caught her crown of flowers, casting rainbow shadows across the gathering of young dragons preparing for their journey to Jade Mountain Academy.
Glory turned to Reborn, her scales shifting to soft shades of blue and gold that reflected her genuine care. "I'm happy you're allowing yourself to leave our beloved forest," she said, her voice carrying the gentle authority that had made her such an effective queen. Her ruff flared slightly with maternal pride as she regarded the young AllWing.
The morning light filtered through the canopy above them, creating dappled patterns across Glory's scales that seemed to emphasize the significance of the moment. Here was an AllWing, one of the rarest and most mysterious of all dragon tribes, preparing to step beyond the protective embrace of the rainforest that had sheltered her.
"The forest will always be here," Glory continued, a tendril of dawn-pink rippling through her scales - her subtle way of showing affection. "But you need to spread your wings and find your own path. Just like I did, all those years ago when I left with Clay and the others."
The weight of tradition, change, and possibility hung in the air between them, as tangible as the morning mist that still clung to the forest floor. Around them, the rainforest itself seemed to hold its breath, its usual chorus of birds and small creatures momentarily hushed as if witnessing this pivotal moment in the young dragon's life.
Reborn bowed deeply, her iridescent scales catching the dawn light in a cascade of colors. "I'm grateful you took me in, Queen Glory. It has been an honor living here," she said, her voice warm with genuine appreciation. Then, with a hint of her usual playful spirit returning, she added, "And don't worry - when the semester ends, I'll be back."
She punctuated her promise with a playful nudge to Deathbringer's side, catching the normally composed NightWing off guard. He yelped in a most undignified manner, his usual smooth demeanor cracking for just a moment. Reborn's eyes sparkled with mischief as she teased, "After all, I can't let this little ray of sunshine wear you out too much."
The contrast between Deathbringer's dark scales and his startled expression drew muffled snickers from the gathered dragonets. Even Glory's scales rippled with barely-contained amusement, flashing hints of rose-gold mirth despite her attempt to maintain her queenly composure.
Deathbringer quickly recovered, smoothing his ruffled dignity with a dramatic wing flutter. "Me? Worn out? My dear, I believe you have that backwards," he retorted, though there was genuine fondness beneath his theatrical offense.
Glory flared her wings with mock indignation, her scales flickering through amused shades of pink and gold. "Alright, enough, you two," she laughed, nudging Kinkajou with her wing. "You're making us feel left out of all this witty banter." Her scales settled into a warm pattern that reflected the growing sunlight, like dawn breaking through clouds.
"Now off you go," she urged warmly, every inch the proud queen sending her subjects toward their futures. "Have fun, and try not to cause too much trouble." The last part was delivered with a knowing glance at Kinkajou, whose scales swirled with innocent pink and white patterns that fooled absolutely no one.
Reborn nodded and joined the stream of dragonets flowing toward their future. They poured out of the tunnel like a living rainbow - RainWings, NightWings, and now an AllWing among them - their wings catching the morning light as they emerged into the vast open sky. The air currents lifted them higher, carrying them toward Jade Mountain Academy and all its promises of adventure.
Kinkajou executed a perfect loop in the air, her scales exploding into a brilliant display of yellows and oranges. "YAY! We're going to school!" she trilled, her joy as infectious as ever.
Reborn smiled at her friend's enthusiasm, but her heart held something deeper than mere happiness. It was a profound sense of rightness, of stepping into a destiny that felt as natural as flying. She might have been the only AllWing among them, but surrounded by her friends, soaring toward new horizons, she felt like she belonged exactly where she was meant to be.
Behind them, the rainforest slowly receded, its emerald canopy glittering with morning dew like a thousand tiny stars bidding them farewell until next semester.
