ㅤ"𝐓𝐎 𝐁𝐄 𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐏𝐋𝐄𝐓𝐄𝐋𝐘 𝐇𝐎𝐍𝐄𝐒𝐓, I thought you would storm in the house after Derek and just pummel Billy Flynn," Penelope told Gwen as she sat on the brunette's couch. It was early morning, the day after the team got back from Los Angeles. The two decided on meeting up at Gwen's apartment before heading off to bug the others' homes, including Penelope's which they saved for last.
Gwen chuckled under her breath as she gently stroked the top of Ladon's head, her thirty-six-inch-long tiger rattlesnake that was curled up in her lap. Severus was of course hanging off her neck with his head resting on her collarbones; Bakunawa was sat on the chair nearest to window where a streak of light was shining through; and Medusa's...somewhere. She's flighty, so Gwen's not that concerned.
"Trust me, I would've pummeled him, as you so intelligently put," she said, a teasing tone to her voice. "But Spencer literally held me back, had to holster his gun just so he can grab me. I was ready, and I mean ready to run after Derek. But then I realized your Chocolate Thunder," she winked, "deserved to be the one to apprehend the unsub so I calmed down a bit."
"Well, Derek got his revenge somehow," Penelope shrugged. "I'm just sad you didn't actually do some damage to the unsub though."
"You wanted me to?" Gwen snorted.
"Yeah, duh, who didn't?"
Gwen shook her head at her while smiling. "God, I really wanted to kick him in the nuts. But then again, I probably wouldn't have been able to be close enough to him to reach said nuts, apparently he reeked." Penelope burst into giggles, which she laughed at. "Alright, well, are you ready to bug everyone's houses?"
"Sure," Penelope sobered up, a look of seriousness on her face, but Gwen could tell she was trying not to laugh. "Game plan?"
Once they got their 'plan' written down, the two set off. They used Gwen's BMW to drive towards the team's houses, starting with Rossi's mansion. Penelope had to be taught how to control the bugs with the joystick, but she got the hang of it really quick, and Rossi ended up just standing on his foyer while face palming at her antics.
"Are you gonna place it on the bannister or not?" Rossi had to ask.
"I know, I know, just let me have fun for a bit," Penelope pleaded. "This little guy is state of the art, I'm telling you. It was designed by some of the greatest minds in the world; it's not everyday I get to play."
"You have six more houses to bug, Penelope," Rossi reasoned.
The redhead pouted before leading the bug to where it could have the best vantage point possible. "Fine."
After Rossi, the two went to Hotch's place. Jack immediately welcomed the two with hugs and kisses, and a new request for Gwen.
"Can I also meet Spider-man?" Jack asked, his eyes wide in wonder.
Gwen giggled and kneeled so that she and Jack were eye-level, ignoring how Penelope and Hotch were bickering over where to position the bug. "Of course. You're lucky, you know, Spidey owes me. That and he's kinda scared of me. He'll meet you, don't worry."
Even though he didn't understand half of what she said, Jack nodded enthusiastically. "Okay! But can Henry meet him too? Henry likes Spider-man."
"Only for my favorite boys."
After that was JJ, and then Derek, Emily, and Spencer. They ended up staying at the doctor's place longer than the others, especially when Penelope figured out that the two had plans to go out.
"Oh! I know this great restaurant that the two of you would just adore," Penelope excitedly rambled while playing with the bug. "Kevin and I go to that place all the time and," she gasped, "what if we do a double date? Ooh, that's a great idea--"
"Garcia," Spencer hesitantly cut her off, exchanging a look with Gwen. The two were sharing the single armchair that was positioned right next to his bookshelf, with her sitting on the armrest while his arm was wrapped around her waist. They were practically cuddling. "We, uh, we decided on just staying in and ordering takeout," he admitted sheepishly.
Penelope's jaw dropped as she gave them an offended look. "Your first date and you two decided on staying in? Why?!"
"I offered to watch Miss Congeniality with him. He needs to be cultured, Penny, you know this," Gwen shrugged, laughing as she nearly slid down to Spencer's lap after he pinched her side as revenge for making fun of him. "I mean, he doesn't even know what a perfect date is!"
After a second of contemplation, Penelope nodded and looked directly at Spencer. "April twenty-fifth. Because it's not too hot, and not too cold. All you need is a light jacket."
"How does that make any sense?!" Spencer complained, pouting at the two women.
"Alright, alright," Penelope conceded with a smile on her face before finally placing the bug into its rightfully assigned place. "When is this movie date taking place?"
Gwen shrugged, looking down at Spencer. "Tonight?"
"Yeah, sure," Spencer shrugged back.
"That was quick," Penelope raised her eyebrows before looking at Gwen, "Come on, my place next."
Finally, they finished bugging everyone's places. Gwen, of course, taught Penelope how to access all the footage by teaching her how to access Stark's satellite, giving the redhead her own personal access code.
"God, this is...this is beautiful, I've never seen anything like it," Penelope gushed as she read through the codes that Tony Stark set up for her. "What about FRIDAY?"
"FRIDAY's already in it, just call out for her and you're good to go," Gwen smiled. "Also, emergency code's contact lens, so don't go saying that randomly. I've already told the others."
"Great," Penelope grinned before closing up her laptop. "Now, you go ahead and go straight home. Take a long shower, shave the bits, wear lingerie--"
"Uh, Penelope, I'm not planning on having sex with Spencer," Gwen gave her an affronted yet amused look. "We're just gonna watch a movie."
"Yeah, that's what they all say."
Gwen was just waiting for the popcorn to finish when Spencer walked through the hallway and leaned against the entrance leading into the kitchen.
Because the elevator went straight into the penthouse—she technically had no door—she had to tell both Viktor and FRIDAY of her and Spencer's plans just so he can get inside. The entire ordeal was embarrassing. She shook away her thoughts as she greeted Spencer with a wave and a bright smile.
"Hi," she greeted rather softly. She and Spencer were alone for the first time. And though, yes, they've shared a room before so technically they were alone, but the team were still in the vicinity; this is the first time they were completely just each other's company. If you don't count her guard snakes of course, who were all staring up at Spencer who stopped in his tracks at the sight.
"Hey, uh, should I be worried?" Spencer pointed at the four serpents, especially Medusa who was climbing up Gwen's dragon tree that was positioned right next to where he stood.
Gwen laughed. "You know they like you, doc."
"Yeah but the way they're looking at me says otherwise."
She laughed again, turning to face the microwave as it pinged. "Well, let's not worry too much. They're just a little protective, that's all."
Spencer warily eyed the snakes before following Gwen as she headed up the stairs to the living room while carrying the popcorn. She was wearing a white, loose button-up with two buttons unbuttoned, paired with a casual pair of denim shorts. Spencer had to tear his eyes away as he followed her up the stairs as her legs looked even longer than usual, and her--
He cleared his throat and pursed his lips while trying to find something else to look at.
He nearly sighed in relief when they reached the top, and Gwen led him to sit on the couch with her. She smiled at him and he returned it, eyes scanning her bare face. Her hair was tied up in a loose bun that sat on top of her head and it allowed him to admire her face unfiltered.
"Y-You look beautiful."
Gwen turned a little pink. "Thank you." She then giggled. "You too."
"Really?" Spencer doubted as he looked down at himself. He was wearing a red knitted cardigan on top of a white collared shirt and a pair of black slacks. He wasn't nearly as casually dressed as her. "I look like I do everyday."
"Yeah, that's 'cause you're beautiful everyday."
"Stop," he whined adorably, hiding his face in his hands as he blushed a tomato red. "I hate how easily you can make me blush."
"Why?" Gwen laughed, placing the bowl of popcorn onto the coffee table. "You're absolutely adorable, Dr Spencer Reid. Actually, you're pretty hot. If I remember correctly, Chelsea—remember her? From when I did the whole pageant thing? She called you hot and said she'd like to taint you."
"Stoooooopppp." He pouted at her as she leaned forward to try and remove his hands from his face. Once she was able to remove them, she leaned forward and planted a kiss to his nose. "Oh my God."
Gwen giggled at his predicament and tried to calm him down. "Alright, alright. Now I feel kinda bad. You look like you're gonna pass out."
He whined again. "You're too much."
"How is that too much?!"
"You're making my heart palpitate," he huffed as she grinned. She was about to open her mouth again, probably to tease him more, so to shut her up, he went ahead and reached out to cuddle her into his chest. The action immediately shut her up. "Ah, silence. I've missed you."
Gwen could only stare at his cardigan in shock as her cheek pressed against his chest. She slowly looked up at him and turned red when she realized he was already looking down at her. She grumbled.
"It's not fun when it's you, huh?"
She pouted and slapped his chest before adjusting their position. She didn't want to pull away from embrace, so she pushed him a little so he can lean back, and twisted her body to face the TV. She pulled her feet up, looked up at him again and smiled.
"Right, well, FRIDAY please play Miss Congeniality."
"Of course," the AI responded, and soon enough, the opening began to play.
The next morning, Spencer woke up with his arms wrapped around Gwen. They had fallen asleep after watching the movie, and were still dressed in the clothes they were wearing the night before. They were also still on the couch, and surprisingly, it was comfortable.
Spencer looked up at the wall mounted clock and saw that it was just a few minutes after seven. He yawned a little and tried not to move too much as Gwen was still fast asleep, her head tucked into the crook of his neck and arm draped over his waist. Her legs were hugging his, and were even trying to pull him closer even in her sleep.
He smiled a little as a feeling of joy bubbled from deep within him.
Never had he felt this happy, this comfortable, with another person before. The way Gwen effortlessly wormed her way into his heart was a little concerning, but he didn't mind, not when the thought of having more moments like these with her filled his mind. His heart started pounding in his chest as he pulled her closer, looking up at the ceiling as he imagined them doing this again. It was beautiful.
He looked down at her sleeping face and chuckled a little, his chest vibrating, as her mouth fell slightly open and soft snores came out. But the little movement was enough to wake the girl up.
Gwen slowly opened her eyes, and the first thing she did was smile. The way Spencer gazed at her made her feel all flustered, but it also made her feel elated. It's been a long time since anyone has looked at her so innocently before, the way he stared into her eyes...
"Good morning," Spence whispered to her, lifting a hand up to stroke her hair. She realized her hair tie was missing, and she could only assume it had flown off when she was sleeping.
"Good morning," she whispered back. She lifted her hand up and slowly traced his features with her finger; from his forehead, down to his eyes that fluttered slightly at her touch, down the bridge of his nose, down to the tip, and eventually to his plump lips. She traced its shape, and he couldn't help himself from biting his lip at her ministrations. She smiled a little and used her thumb to pull his bottom lip from between his teeth. She continued on tracing his lips before she began to lean up, eyes flickering from his eyes and back to his lips. He was also slowly leaning down, when suddenly her phone started ringing.
They both jumped away from each other, blushes on their cheeks, as they both scrambled up from the couch. Gwen cleared her throat as she looked for her phone.
"Here," Spencer called out to her, plucking her phone from between the cushions and throwing it at her outstretched hand.
"Thanks." She looked down and saw Hotch's name across the screen. She frowned before answering. "Hotch?"
"Gwen, the team and I are outside, you need to let us in, something's happened."
"Oh God," she let out a breath before calling out, "FRIDAY, where's Viktor?"
"He's out doing his morning jog," the AI informed her.
"Right, okay, can you check out if the team's outside? If possible, please scan them and make sure they aren't being coerced or anything like that?" Spencer frowned at her words.
"We aren't," Hotch told her.
"You can never be too sure these days."
FRIDAY spoke up again. "They're clean. I'm letting them in."
"Thanks FRIDAY."
Soon, the team were all climbing up to the second floor of the penthouse. They were all surprised that Spencer was already there, but instead of teasing him and Gwen like they usually do, they all just got down to business immediately. That's when Gwen knew that something was wrong.
"What's going on?"
Hotch sighed and handed her a manila folder, the signature frown on his face contorted into one of concern. She scanned his expression before taking the folder from him and sitting back down onto the couch while placing the folder onto the coffee table. She slowly opened it up.
She shuddered. "He's been watching you." In the folder were six pictures, one for each of the members of the team, and when she flipped it over, the lyrics of Tili Tili Bom were once again written in Russian. "Where did you get all these?"
"In our mail this morning," JJ answered, arms folded. "We can only assume Spencer has one too, but since he spent a night here, he didn't realize."
Spencer pursed his lips and frowned down at the lyrics. "Why does he mean by these words?"
"It's a lullaby," Gwen sighed, running a hand through her hair. "Long story short, it's a story about a man who's...stalking you, basically. He moves from being outside your window, to being right inside your room, in the corner, staring at you."
"That's a lullaby?" Penelope asked incredulously. "Who in their right mind--"
"It's, uh, it's a warning," Gwen cut her off. "Not just to you guys, but for me too."
"To you?" Spencer stressed. "Why you? Does he know you?"
"He probably does," she scoffed. "I remember this lullaby, he used to sing it to me."
"Kuznetsov?"
"No, it's uh..." Gwen clenched her jaw. "What I'm about to tell you is classified information. So classified that it was never written down or anything. There's no record of this anywhere in the SHIELD database. I can't...tell you...everything, but..." Her hands began to shake as she closed her eyes, the team startling as her snakes began to slither over to her for reassurance. Severus immediately climbed up her leg and settled on her lap. "There's a reason why I have my powers, okay? But I wasn't born with it. It was, um..." She took a deep breath.
"You don't have to..." Emily trailed off, sharing a look with the others as she moved forward to sit next to Gwen.
"No, no, I-uh, I have to," she licked her lips. "I was experimented on. By several scientists. They wanted to add another player onto their roster, but they wanted to make sure the player was enhanced. So as a way to bring out a mutation, they...they turned me into a lab rat. God, I...I died. So many times. And they just kept on bringing me back." Her hands shook even more as her lower lip began to tremble. "But the scientists...they passed me around, you know? From one scientist to another, each with their own specialty. Eventually I reached him. He was a herpetologist...with a knack for snake venom. He, uh, while he did his...he would always sing that."
Derek clenched his jaw at her revelation, brows pulled into a frown. He also sat next to her, on her other side. She continue to look down at the floor, but allowed him to grab her shaking hand to try and calm her down. The entire room was silent as they mulled over her words. But it wasn't that hard to see all the looks of horror on their faces.
Rossi hesitantly opened his mouth. "How would Kuznetsov know that?"
"Because...because I was experimented on by HYDRA."
Spencer sharply inhaled as he stared down at Gwen. He then decided on pushing away the folder so he can sit on the coffee table, right across from her. "Gwen, stay with me here, okay?" He said as she slowly began to panic. "Hey, hey, I'm here. Deep breaths."
Gwen nodded at his words, following his instructions. She inhaled and exhaled at the pace he set and soon she calmed. She wanted to continue staring down at the floor, but the severity of the situation made her look up and school her expression. Despite her panic attack, her voice was strong.
"I need to talk to Strauss and the director."
"Gwen, he's targeting you now too," Spencer told her, concerned for her well-being.
"He's not," she shook her head, tearing her hand away from Derek as she stood up, Severus immediately climbing up her arm and transforming into a tattoo. "He's just letting me know what he knows. He's letting me know that he knows that I'm involved. This isn't the first time."
"What?" Emily asked. "What do you mean?"
"The victims that looked like you guys, each of them had the lyrics shoved down their throats."
"Why wasn't it on the reports?" Hotch frowned deeper at her. His arms were crossed now, and frustration was clear on his face.
"Because I didn't think it would be important."
"Not important? How is that not important, Gwen?!" Derek argued. "He was talking to you directly, taunting you!"
"You don't think I know that?" She calmly talked back. The team was taken aback at how she just suddenly became cold and calculated, especially after she just had a panic attack. It was unsettling. "That's why I have to talk to Strauss and the director. I'll meet you guys at the roundtable. We need to call in reinforcements."
Penelope frowned. "Who?"
"The Avengers."
