Fenella's POV

All of their intricacies in tone and volume impresses me. Most of the city's birds aren't intelligent in the slightest.

This little town had its own way of being. Quiet, tiny, and compact. I think I liked this place. Hopefully the people would be just as nice. The Cullens did me a solid, letting me come over to stay with them. Most families wouldn't care about some random girl with SCID and definitely wouldn't let her into their home.

The small airport held little to no people inside, only a single family. When they turned around, something inside of me clicked. All of their faces lit up when they saw me.

Looking around, I was thankful that nobody was there to see me fall to the floor. All of them rushed over to me, one of them pulling me back up. I clutched at my chest, both loving at hating the tightening happiness that filled my heart.

"Hey, hey, you're okay," a man with sandy blonde hair comforted me, "Fenella, are you feeling alright?"

"Who are you?" It was an utterly stupid thing to ask him. God, he was one of the Cullens. He had to be. Great going, Fennie, you just made a fool of yourself in front of your- oh he's hot. He's really hot. Is he the doctor? I don't want this guy checking me out! Or do I? I do. Damn my teenage hormones. Damn his dashing good looks. Why does my doctor have to be so hot?

One of the boys behind him choked out a laugh. "Glad you think so."

"Edward!" An adult woman chastised.

"Sorry, Esme," he apologized, looking at me with care. Those golden eyes of his- of theirs, they weren't normal. Palest skin I've ever seen. I couldn't help but be so drawn to them. Whatever was happening, it wasn't normal. Nothing about this was normal.

Then again, who wants ordinary?

"My name is Carlisle Cullen," the man introduced himself before holding me against his chest. My heart fluttered at the small action. He was so cold, but it felt really nice. "Right, uhm, we should be getting back to the house. Do you need anything, Fenella? Water, food?"

"No, I'm fine," I lied. I was starving, but I couldn't have just anything at an airport. I'm allergic to way too much. "Do I have to do any work or...?"

"You'll start school tomorrow morning with my children. Alice, Jasper, Emmett, Rosalie, and Edward will attend the same school as you. They've offered to at least have one class with you throughout the day so you will have someone to talk to." I blushed furiously. Nobody has ever been that nice to me before. Hell, I didn't have any friends back in Seattle. "I think you'll enjoy the school. It's small, but they're good kids."

"We should get her something to eat. You can tell us your allergies, Fenella, Esme can cook anything you need." It was like this Edward boy had read my mind.

The really big teenage boy took my large suitcase in one hand. "God, princess, how many shirts do you have in here?"

"Emmett," a boy with a southern drawl started, "They said to bring everything, so she did."

"Mhm, Jaz, ruining all my jokes today. Don't be a party pooper and help me out."

It was certainly what I was doing at the moment. Getting starry eyed over the hot doctor that would be checking out my body during the next year or so... what was I doing? This is not how you should be spending your time! Why? Because he's hot and nice, that's why.

For heaven's sake, he's a doctor, married, and an adult. Oh, but he's a young man, perhaps 23? That can't be too old for lil ol' me. But he's married. I'm no homewrecker.

If anything, I want to bring people together.

The problem with all of my thoughts weren't just that they were about my sexy doctor, it was that they were about all the attractive Cullens. Something made me just want to take them and be near them at all times.

I found myself crushing on all of them. By the morning, I knew my feelings were rampant and ridiculous. I knew that most of them were coupled up. It wasn't going to happen. I'm a dying girl, and as much as I want to be a part of people's lives I could hurt them. I'll bring people joy while it lasts, that's what I always do. No real attachments, never let people all the way in.

"Fenella, do you want some food?" It was Esme Cullen who came in. The ethereal woman had a motherly feel to everyone else, but she left me breathless. "You're a bit pink, dear, are you feeling alright?"

"I'm fine," I sputtered out quickly, "Just fine."

Esme chuckled before asking again, "Food?"

"Sure. I gave you all a list..." My cheeks were a fiery red. It make me feel so stupid and amazing at the same time.

"Of course dear," her honey voice sent shivers down my spine. I hoped Esme didn't notice my flustered state. Ignorance was better than knowing your husband's patient has a crush on you and your husband.

Why did my feelings do this to me?

Sitting down on the almost-unused bed in my new room, I watch as Jasper walks into my bedroom. Esme shot him a smile before he came over, grinning. "Here's your schedule. You have first and third with Alice and I, second and fourth with Emmett and Rose, and fifth and sixth with Edward. Lunch is after fourth and you can stay with us if you want."

"That would be nice." I was screwed. Surrounded by sexy people during lunch, what a way for my heart to give into sweet death. "You don't have to be so nice to me. I'm not that-"

"Don't say that." Edward had now joined us. Okay what the hell is happening here? Why is everyone in here now? "She's a bit confused."

What is he doing? Can you hear me? That would be weird. Imagine hearing someone's thoughts. What could someone hear? What if they saw what someone else was thinking up in their head? Visualisation?

"Uhm, moving on." I was now convinced that somehow, no matter how weird and impossible, Edward Cullen could read my mind. "So, do I get school books or do I just wing it?"

"We got them beforehand," Edward's voice calmed my anxieties. I felt so at ease with them in ways I couldn't understand. "Just pack your bag and we'll help make you a lunch."

"Why are you being so nice to me?" I asked. I mean, I appreciate it, but I'm not worth this much trouble. Keeping me in the house, helping my schedule, offering me lunch? This is indoctrination level nice. I'm not sure how I feel about it, but my heart...

"You'll find out why when the time is right," Jasper said, patting my head. I frowned childishly, not liking the unknown of it all. If they were ever going to tell me what the hell was going on, I wanted it to be soon. Now, honestly. I'm impatient sometimes. And childish. Definitely childish. "Don't worry about it for now."

"What is it?" Edward looked down at the ground. Jasper followed suit. "Look, something's going on and-"

"Just come to school tomorrow," Jasper deflected my question. I frowned. The southern boy looked away from me, even when I gazed into his golden eyes.

Golden. Those eyes didn't feel okay. They were like that of some ancient predator, but I didn't inch away or want to leave. Even so, I wanted him. None of my instincts told me to run, to hide. This just... everything made me want to have him right next to me. Something inside of me, some weird piece of my heart, wanted to be near this golden-eyed boy. Each little bit wanted to be near each Cullen and it freaked me out.

Memories flooded back once he touched my hand. They were likely the happiest ones of my short life, mostly the best times with my mother and father. He reminded me of a time when I was innocent, unaware that I had a life expectancy of twenty years at most.

Even with knowledge of my short life, I tried to make the most of it. It was the least I could do for my mother, who often wondered if her dreams of a child were selfish given the chances of me being unhealthy. No matter what, I showed her that even if I was going to die, I will have died having lived. That was all that mattered to me now. I would live.

Living meant taking risks. Although everything is a risk when something as simple as a cough can kill you.

"You're spacing out again," Esme's sweet voice brought me out of my short daze. My eyes gazed down, not wanting to get lost in those golden eyes of hers. I didn't want to know how she had such inhuman eyes, the answer would likely be just as vague as Edwards.

Pale skin, golden eyes, and perfect features, these people barely passed a human. Are they even human?

That comment made Edward take in a deep breath and laugh awkwardly. Oh, he definitely could read my mind. Does he know that I know? He must be listening because he's getting up-

"Fenella," Edward started, but stopped himself. Esme shot him a look and the boy growled under his breath. "Fenella, this isn't something to worry about-"

"So you can read my mind," I said, crossing my arms once more. Jasper and Esme gave me an awkward smile and laughed. "I know he can read my mind. It's so obvious. How he's doing it, I don't know. I'm not one to be superstitious, but I mean that isn't the craziest thing about you lot."

"That isn't real-" I cut the weird telepath off.

"Why am I so drawn to you all? Why do you all seem to have the same golden eyes even though you're a foster family with no genetic ties? Why was Carlisle so cold?" I was met with stares colder than the doctor's skin. What the hell is going on with them? Do they think that they can just look at me like I'm crazy and not answer the question? Hello? I just asked you a question, Edward Cullen. You can hear me! I know that I'm annoying-

"Don't call yourself annoying, Fenella." Esme let out a heavy sigh and Jasper facepalmed at Edward's reveal. You really screwed up on that one, didn't you? "How do we tell her this? This isn't just something we can reveal. It's illegal."

"She's our-" Jasper was cut off by Carlisle and Alice entering the room. Carlisle looked a bit annoyed with his son, something I did not expect from the usually tranquil man. "Carlisle-"

"Alice already told me what she saw," he said with a sigh, "There is no way around it if we want it to gain Fenella's trust. I would have hoped that you had some sense of secrecy with your gift, Edward."

"I'm sorry, Carlisle," Edward apologized, "She is smarter than most humans."

"You sound like I'm the only human here..." They all gave me a look. "Shit I'm the only one here, aren't I? Or is this just a prank? It could be an amazing prank. If it is, you can just tell me now. I'm not really into these sorts of things, so if you would just-"

"This isn't a prank, Fennie," Alice said, sitting down next to me on the bed. I blushed bright red at her closeness. She simply giggled and turned back to Carlisle. "We need to tell her so she doesn't run."

What came out of Carlisle's mouth next would leave me shaking.

"We're vampires, Fenella, and you're our shared mate."
