SUMMERTIME IN LA.
THE HEAT is scorching. Time flies. The number of tourists double. People get annoyed easier. It seems as if people like being idiots more often.
But somehow, Evan Buckley and Evelynn Kennedy always found the fun in every shift, and in between them as well.
Buck and Lynn had been living together for almost four months now, which was crazy to them because it had seemed like only yesterday when Buck was moving in his boxes. They enjoyed being roommates, they enjoyed each other's company.
Although the teasing and jokes seemed to be endless from their friends at the firehouse, and Lizzy and Joe, the two young adults had grown better at simply ignoring them.
Neither of them had talked about the night where drunk Lynn had sloppily started a make out session between her and Buck. It almost seemed like it never actually happened, like it was all just some dream Lynn had cooked up. She was relieved it was never brought up again, because she would've been absolutely flustered.
She couldn't deny it; that living with Buck had been the highlight of her, well, year, maybe decade? The two were the best of friends, and everyone was a bit confused on how they didn't hate each other's guts from being with one another basically every hour of the day. Every Friday, they would try their best to have their weekly movie night. Where Buck picks up the amazing Thai food Lynn's obsessed with—which she proudly got Buck into—and she figured out a god awful movie to watch. They purposely pick the worst of the worst, so they can laugh all night and make fun of the terrible actors. Other than that, they still make time for their morning coffee runs, delicious home cooked dinners, and good breakfast before shifts.
"I got another DXA scan, and guess who dropped another half percent!"
Lynn adjusted her shift bag full of clothing on her shoulder, raising her head up to glance over to Buck walking beside her. The two had just entered the fire station, and Lynn saw Bobby and Hen talking near the lockers; and she assumed that's where Buck was heading towards.
"What?" Hen questioned, raising a confused eyebrow towards the muscled man.
"A DXA scan measures your body fat," Buck explained, and then he rose his phone so that everyone could see some app that had a human body image in it. "You can see your percentage in every part of your body."
"Oh, yeah? They measure the fat in your head?" Hen countered, tilting her head full of sarcasm, and Lynn had to stifle a laugh.
"Ah, see, that would be funny, but we're about a week away from submissions being due for the Hot Days, Smoldering Nights: Men in the LAFD wall calendar," Buck pointed his index finger warningly towards his friend, and Lynn rolled her blue eyes as it seemed like that was the hundredth time Buck had mentioned the calendar; this week. "And I'm already at my goal weight, so it seems like my head is clearly working perfectly."
"Do you really need to use that whole title?" Hen asked, and by now Lynn had saw Chimney walk up in between Bobby and Hen, and seemed honestly interested. "You could just say 'that idiotic, reductive, sexist calendar that insults the dignity of this organization and further the myth that all firefighters are male'."
"You, my woman, are one hundred percent correct," Lynn nodded with a wide smirk, pointing her slender finger towards Hen, who returned with a bright smile. "I think women should've been allowed to enter, in that case, all y'all would've been beat by me."
"Yeah, that's not any less words," Buck answered, and he glanced over towards Lynn with playful narrowed eyes. "And that statement, Evie, is absolutely right."
"Hen, Lynn, c'mon, it's for charity," Bobby interrupted the two young adults staring at each other, and Lynn furrowed her eyebrows towards the man; utterly confused on how he could still have an outstanding positive attitude for the past few weeks.
"No, Bobby, you too?"
Lynn let out another round of laughs, shaking her head to the side; almost surprised that her friends truly supported the male agenda but a part of her believed in it for charity.
"Well, why not? They say a man is at his sexiest when he reaches fifty," Bobby continued, and he placed his hands in his hips in a sudden attitude.
"Is that what they say?" Hen deadpanned, almost waiting for the joke. "That's what they say?"
"Okay, you're both wrong. Alright?" Chimney interrupted, picking up his arms to basically silence the rest of the group. "You see, I think sorority houses all across this great nation are ready for a new Asian sex symbol. It's our time."
Lynn glanced over to Hen, who immediately gazed over to Lynn at the same time, and both women had to bite down on her bottom lips to hold in the laughter.
"I think it's great. You know?" Buck continued, and it was almost as if he was ignoring Chimney's previous statement. "I like that you're both going up for it."
"Oh, because you don't think we have a chance," Bobby scoffed, letting a fake, hurt expression cover his face.
"Whoa, did I say that?" Buck questioned, glancing over to Lynn who only rose her arms in defense, most definitely not wanting to be in the middle of picking sides. "I mean sure, let's be real. They are only picking one candidate from each station—"
"—Okay. That is a beautiful man."
Everyone seemed to stop in the conversation, and glanced over to Chimney in confusion, and then they followed his index finger that was pointing towards the locker rooms.
"Where's the lie?" Hen stated, and she seemed utterly in shock as her eyes landed on a man. "And I like girls."
"Holy shit," Lynn breathed out, blinking a few times to make sure the sight in front of her was actually real.
There in the locker rooms, was an unfamiliar, quite attractive man. He looked to be latino, with slick brown hair and a bit of a scruff growing. He was currently tugging on a t-shirt, but it seemed like he was moving in slow motion as Lynn's blue eyes were stuck on his gorgeous eight pack.
Buck scoffed loudly as his own eyes landed on the good looking man, and then he quickly switched over to Lynn standing beside him; and he could quite literally see the drool about to drip from her lips. Annoyance then covered his face, and he could feel his jaw tense up.
"Who the hell is that?" Buck almost growled, turning back on his heels towards Bobby.
"It's Eddie Diaz, new recruit," Bobby explained, and he seemed amused by the look on Buck's face. "Graduated top of his class just this week. Guys over at Station Six we're dying to have him, but I convinced him to join us."
"What do we need him for?"
Everyone joined together in laughter, cleaning sending and hearing the jealousy cracking in Buck's voice.
"He served multiple tours in Afghanistan as an Army medic. Guys got a Silver Star," Bobby shrugged his shoulders towards Buck, and Lynn rose an interested eyebrow as she glanced back to the man getting dressed. "It's not like he's wet behind the ears. C'mon, I'll introduce you to him. He likes to be called Eight Pack."
Lynn had to stifle her laughter before she got Buck even more upset, and then rose her hand up in the air with a tiny grin covering her face.
"Yes, sir, I'd love to be introduced to Mr. Eight Pack," Lynn hollered, maybe purposely to make Buck more jealous than before or maybe because she genuinely wanted to meet the guy.
"Wow, Silver Star."
"Better drop some more body fat there, butch," Chimney teased, smacking Buck in the abdomen while he followed both Hen and Bobby towards the locker room; surely wanting to meet the new recruit just like everyone else.
Just as Lynn took a step forward to walk up with the rest of her friends, wanting to introduce herself to this Eddie man, she was interrupted as slender fingers were hooked around her wrist. When she glanced up with confusion, she saw an almost hurt expression crossed on Buck's face.
"Can't you meet him later?"
"C'mon, Buck, there's nothing to be jealous about," Lynn countered, raising an unamused eyebrow towards the man. "Just meet the guy."
"Who said I'm jealous?" Buck immediately replied, his tone of voice a little high, and Lynn sent him a deadpan stare while shaking her head to the side.
"You're always jealous of new recruits, maybe because the attentions off you for a millisecond and you get all huffy puffy," Lynn retorted, and she rolled her blue eyes a bit annoyed while taking her hand back from Buck's grip.
Buck was a bit offended that Lynn suddenly snapped on him, and he clenched his jaw again as he watched her sway her hips a bit while walking up with the rest of his friends towards this Eddie Diaz.
"Eddie Diaz? Evelynn. Evelynn Kennedy."
Lynn stuck out her hand as her playful blue eyes met those of Eddie's, and the man sent her a tight smile while holding out his as well. The two shake for a moment, before releasing, but it didn't seem like their eyes left one another's for a second.
Off in the distance, was an only getting more annoyed and jealous Buck by the second.
"What's he got that I don't?"
