CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT:
BACK TO NORMAL

THEY STAYED WITH THE Denali's in Alaska. Emma was distant from everyone. Edward was gone god knows where. He only called in every other month to inform the family that he was okay. Emma watched as the snow fell from the sky. The month of December was coming right around the corner and Emma had yet to talk to anyone, not even Kate, or her brother. She was silent. Rosalie, as well as the rest of the family, was worried about Emma. She hadn't been this closed off since the first time she, Alice, and Jasper all came to join the coven.

The snow continued to pile up on the ground, inches and inches of snow and not a strand of grass in sight. The evergreen trees clashed with the white glow of the ice that littered the ground, mesmerizing in every way possible. This was a distraction for Emma. A simple distraction that gave her the chance to get away from everyone.

They had all tried to talk to the girl, but she would simply ignore them. She was insulting herself in her head. If Edward were there he would wince at her thoughts. Emma was sure that by December, she would come out of this current state, for December was her favorite month of the year. She never understood why December always made her so happy. It must've been something that had happened in her human life that she had simply forgot had happened.

However, Kate wasn't having it. Emma let out a yelp of surprise when a sudden bolt of electricity rippled through her body. She jumped up from her seat in surprise and turned on her heel to glare at Kate.

"What the hell was that for?" Emma asked, rubbing the spot where Kate had electrocuted her.

"This depression thing, it needs to stop, and it needs to stop now." Kate tells her, not daring to beat around the bush. Kate knew that if the others had tried to talk to Emma, they would just be gentle with their words. But not Kate. Kate knew that her bluntness would hopefully put the girl back to somewhat normal.

"I'm not in a depression." Emma defended. Kate gave her a blank look.

"Really?"

"Yeah."

"Well that's bullshit."

"It's not bullshit."

"Dude, all I'm asking is for you to smile. A real smile." Kate tells her. "Stop sulking around because of something you couldn't control. It is not your fault." Emma frowns and looks to the ground as she crosses her arms over her chest. Kate sighed before taking a step closer to her. She placed her hands on both of Emma's shoulders before speaking once more. "Your family is worried about you, Em. I'm worried about you. Rose and Jasper are especially worried about you. I know that you feel bad about what happened, and honestly I would be kind of worried if you didn't. You keep telling yourself that you're a monster, right? Well guess what, monsters don't feel guilty and sorry for the wrong thing they have done. So stop thinking that you're something that you're not. You are Emma Grace Whitlock-Cullen. You are strong, and kind―︎when you want to be. You have control and you are not a monster. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise, understand?"

Emma didn't respond as she pulled her bottom lip between her teeth. Kate's eyes narrowed at the blonde beauty before forcing the girl to look at her. Kate repeated the last word. "Understand?" Emma nodded her head and Kate sent her a wide smile. "Great. Now, go hunt because you haven't in I don't know how long and your eyes are pitch black."

Emma looked at her and Kate sighed. "Do you want me to come with you?"

"Please."

"And she speaks!"

"She spoke five minutes ago." Emma defended. Kate smirked.

"There's my girl!"

"Well, your girl's throat is on fire and would appreciate it if you would hurry up and leave so that she can follow." Emma said with a sarcastic smile. Kate put her hands up in defense before walking out the door, Emma following close behind.

Emma was out hunting for awhile. She wanted to make sure her eyes were back to their original bright gold before she talked with any of her family. She needed to put herself back together again like she always did. When she gained her usual sarcastic self back, that's when she would confront her family. She needed to plaster her walls, making sure there wasn't a single crack in sight.

She removed her teeth from the animal she had murder, wiping any sight of blood from her mouth. Like the pro she was, she didn't get an ounce of blood on her clothes so she wouldn't have to change when she came back. She looked down at the creature before standing up off the ground. She walked around the forest, looking down at the snow covered ground and watching with a small smile as her shoes made prints, dirtying the pure white snow.

Emma stood there for a minute, closing her eyes as she allowed the snow to decorate her blonde locks. She breathed in the cold air, smiling in satisfaction as it cooled down the burning that was already returning in her throat. She was letting the cold air fix her mood. She was going to stand there and let the cold air swarm her until her mood was in check.

Nodding her head, Emma turned on her heel and started back towards Kate that she knew was waiting for her. Kate pushed herself from the tree that she was leaning against and looked at Emma, cocking an eyebrow.

"Ready?"

"As ready as I'll ever be." Emma mumbled. Kate held out her hand and Emma took it, allowing the blonde to lead her back to the home. When they entered, Emma immediately cringed at the many eyes that fell on her.

"I did it. You are so very welcome." Kate told the family. Emma rolled her eyes at the girl, receiving a smirk in response. "I'll be in my room if you need anything." Kate gave Emma's hand a slight squeeze before removing herself from the room. Emma turned to look at her family, giving them a small smile and then jumping in surprise when Amelia appeared in front of her, throwing her arms tightly around her to hug her.

"Hi to you too." Emma said, patting the girls back. Amelia pulled away and glared at the girl.

"Fais-moi ça encore une fois, Emma alors aide-moi Dieu je te tuerai. Oui, vous pouvez traverser une dépression ou autre chose, mais pas pendant près de trois mois!" Amelia snapped. (Do that to me again, Emma so help me God I will kill you. Yeah, you can go through a depression or whatever, but not for almost three months!)

"I guess it's a good thing I studied French." Emma muttered with a small laugh. Amelia huffed before letting a small smile pull up at the corners of her lips.

"Just don't do it again, alright. Or I will actually kill you." Amelia sternly said. Emma smiled at her before nodding her head.

"Yes ma'am." Her southern charm fell from her lips and immediately, the entire family's relaxed. She was okay. Or rather, she was going to be okay.

"Little Whitlock's back." Emmett smiled. Emma gave him a sarcastic one.

"Yeah, and little Whitlock is gonna kick your ass if you call her little Whitlock again." This of course earned chuckles from the family. When Amelia moved away, Jasper walked up to her with a small frown. Emma looked up at her brother with guilty and apologetic eyes. She wrapped her arms around his neck as he wrapped his around her waist, pulling her in for a hug. Emma nuzzled her head into the crook of his neck.

"You can't do that." Jasper muttered, holding his little sister as tightly as he could without hurting her. "You can't scare me like that. I was worried, Em. And the fact that you wouldn't talk to me only made it worse. I wanted to help-"

"But you didn't want to break our rule." Emma nodded. "I know, and I'm sorry. It won't happen again. . . hopefully." She pulled away from him so that she could give him a small smile. He smiled back at her before giving her a kiss on the top of her head. When he pulled away, Emma looked around and furrowed her eyebrows at the absence of her wife. She looked back at her brother. "Where-?"

"Upstairs." He answered. Emma nodded her head before moving herself out of his arms and walking up the steps in search for her wife. Emma could see her wife's shaded figure inside the bathroom. She knocked before gently sliding open the door and then entering. She closed the door behind her and met her wife's eyes through her reflection. Rosalie looked away first before looking down at the sink.

"Rose?" Emma asked, taking a step closer. Rosalie's jaw was clenched as her hands held tightly onto the sides of the sink.

"You stop talking to me, to everyone for three months and then decide on your own terms that everything is fine?"

"I know, I'm sorry-"

"You're sorry? You can't just do that, Emma."

"I've already received a lecture from Amelia in French as well as one from my brother. Can I please not get one from my wife as well?" Emma begged, closing her eyes as she sighed. Rosalie didn't say anything. "Alright, well, have fun being mad at me. I'll be with Kate if you need me." Emma gave up, turning on her heel to open the door.

"Why is it always her?"

Emma stopped dead in her tracks and turned sideways. "Excuse me?"

"What is it about her? What does she have that I don't?" Rosalie asked, finally turning completely to face Emma, Emma doing the same. Her arms were crossed over her chest, her eyebrows furrowed.

"Rose, we've talked about this." Emma gently says.

"That doesn't answer the question."

"I don't really understand what is that you're implying. . ." Emma says, cocking her head to the side. "Please, do not tell me you're jealous." Rosalie scowled at the word. Emma's eyebrows rose as an amused smile played at her lips. "Holy shit, you're jealous!" She let out a laugh as Rosalie narrowed her eyes.

"Stop saying that. I'm not jealous."

"You totally are. But, whatever." Emma shrugged, a smile still playing at her lips. "I don't understand why you're so worked up over this. You're my wife, not her."

"If you had the chance, it would be her though, right?"

"Rose, where is this coming from?"

"Just, answer." Rosalie huffed. Emma was completely confused by her actions, but shrugged her shoulders.

"I mean. . . if I didn't have you, then honestly, probably." Emma stated nonchalantly. Rosalie glared daggers at her and Emma couldn't help herself as she found it all amusing.

"I'm glad you find this amusing." Rosalie snarled.

"I find it amusing that you think I could ever love someone else that isn't you." Emma retorted. She shook her head. "Guess I don't show it enough." She turned on her heel and walked out of the bathroom, ignoring the calls of her wife. She walked back down the steps and out of the house without a single word.
