CHAPTER SIXTY-NINE:
THE VOLTURI ARE COMING

RENESMEE LOOKED TO BE at least six now. The child was growing exponentially fast and Emma could tell that Edward and Bella were both worried about how much time they were going to have with her until she was a full grown adult. Jacob, Renesmee, and Bella went out walking due to the fact that it was snowing outside and the little girl wanted to catch snowflakes.

When the three came back, there was something off. Emma exchanged a look with Edward as the trio entered the room further.

"Did something happen?" Emma was curious. Her head tilted to the the side as her arms crossed over her chest.

"I saw Irina. Before I could talk to her, she ran off." Bella spoke. Emma nodded her head.

"I'll call Tanya." Emma mumbled before walking out of the room and doing just that. Tanya answered and explained to Emma that she had convinced Irina to apologize for her behavior. Emma entered the room where the rest of the family was residing, grabbing everyone's attention as she started to speak. "Tanya convinced Irina to reconcile with us."

"Well, it looks like she changed her mind." Edward said with a sigh as Emma took a seat beside her brother on the couch, his arm instantly wrapping around her as he continued to read his book.

"Seeing Jacob must've been too much for her." Esme pointed out.

"Seeing Jacob is too much for me in general." Emma mumbled, earning an eye roll from the wolf.

"I wish I could have just spoken to her." Bella said with a frown, taking her spot beside the piano where Edward was sitting, his daughter by his side.

"She's family, she'll come around." Carlisle assured the female before he turned back to his came of chess that he and Esme were playing. Amelia and Emmett stood in the corner, wrapped in each other's arms as Edward started to elegantly play the piano. Jacob stood away from the family, leaning against the wall but keeping his eyes on his imprint. Rosalie was sitting on the arm of the couch, listening to the music with a soft smile whilst also watching Renesmee as she played around with the keys. One of her hands was interlaced with Emma's and the latter continued to lean against Jasper. Alice was outside, probably picking more flowers for the new vase she had just gotten not too long ago.

The moment was peaceful, and refreshing; something the entire house of vampires could use. When Alice entered the home, her usual cheery smile faded from her face as a vision pulled her in. She gasped and the vase full of freshly picked flowers fell from her hands, shattering violently onto the hardwood floor. Emma was quick to move herself from her brother's embrace as he slammed his book closed and sped over to his mate with clear worry written on his face. Emma stood up, taking her place beside Rosalie and holding the blonde close to her as she looked at Alice with a small frown and furrowed eyebrows.

"What is it, Alice?" Jasper asked.

Alice looked at him with a hint of fear flowing through her eyes before she looked at the rest of the family, the frown never leaving her face. "The Volturi, they're coming for us. Aro, Caius, Marcus, the guard and Irina."

"Honey, come here." Bella beckoned her child and Renesmee was quick to respond by standing up and walking over to her mother, Bella putting a protective arm around her daughter.

"Why?" Carlisle quizzed with furrowed eyebrows.

"What did Irina see in the woods?" Edward asked, his eyes switching from Bella to Jacob and back to Bella again.

"We were just walking." Bella simply answered, a puzzled look crossing her face.

"Ness was catching snowflakes." Jacob added.

"Of course." Edward mumbled. "Irina thinks Renesmee's an immortal child."

Bella furrowed her eyebrows in confusion, glancing down to look at her daughter. Noticing the confused look, Carlisle was quick to explain it to her. He handed the girl a book that gave pictures and information. "The immortal children were very beautiful, so enchanting. To be near them was to love them. But their development was frozen at the age they were turned, they couldn't be taught or restrained. A single tantrum could destroy an entire village. Humans heard about the devastation, stories spread, the Volturi were forced to intervene. And since the children couldn't protect our secret, they had to be destroyed. The creators grew very attached, fought to protect them. Long established covens were torn apart, countless humans slaughtered. Traditions, friends, even families, lost."

"So the Denali's mother made an immortal child?" Bella quizzed. Carlisle nodded his head, but Bella's confused expression never left her face. "Well, Renesmee is nothing like those children. She was born, not bitten. She grows every single day."

"So can't you just explain that to the Volturi?" Jacob asked.

"Aro has enough proof in Irina's thoughts." Edward said with the slight shake of his head.

"So we fight." Jacob shrugged making Emma roll her eyes at the boy.

"Their offensive weapons are too powerful. No one could stand against Jane." Jasper responded to the boy.

"Alec's even worse." Alice piped up.

"Well, what about her?" Jacob asked, pointing to Emma. A snarl immediately fell from both Jasper's and Rosalie's lips at the suggestion. Jacob put his hands up in surrender. "Or not."

"Well, then we convince them." Bella spoke up.

"They're coming to kill us, not talk." Emmett pointed out to the brunette like it was the most obvious thing―︎which it was.

"No, you're right. They won't listen to us. But maybe others can convince them. Carlisle, we have friends all around the world." Edward said, turning his head to look at the father figure of the family.

"I won't ask them to fight." Carlisle responded with a stern shake of the head.

"Not fight, witness." Edward corrected. "If enough people knew the truth, maybe we can convince the Volturi to listen."

Esme turns her head to look at Carlisle. "We can ask this of our friends." A soft smile fell on the loving woman's face.

The next day, Emma and Rosalie both started packing things, as did the rest of the family. Emma zipped up the bag and offered her wife a small smile of reassurance, knowing the blonde was worried about what was going to happen in the next coming days.

"Alright, let's get this show on the road." Jacob said, clapping his hands together and forcing another eyeroll out of Emma. He stopped in his tracks when he looked out the window, noticing Sam stop right in front of the porch. The vampires all made their way outside and Emma couldn't help but notice Jasper and Alice not standing there with them.

Sam walked up to Carlisle before handing him a note and then saying, "Alice asked me to give you that. She and Jasper crossed our lands to the ocean last night."

And just like that, Emma's face fell. A frown placed itself on her lips as worry started to wash over her. Why did they leave? What happened? What was her brother not telling her? The panic started to rise violently in her chest and Rosalie looked at her with a worried glance.

"Carlisle." Esme quizzed, frowning as she glanced at Emma who looked like she was about to have a complete meltdown.

"They've left us." Carlisle answered, looking at the rest of his family.

"Why?" Rosalie asked with a frown, her hand squeezing Emma's tightly as if trying to reassure the girl.

"She didn't say." Carlisle answered. Emma's panic slowly turned into anger. Alice had promised to never take Jasper away from her, yet she had done just that. Emma was left in a home that didn't have her brother in it, and she didn't know what to do. She hadn't been without Jasper since she was a vampire. So having him not there with her was something she had never experienced in the life of being a vampire. Emma hadn't even paid attention to the fact that Bella now had the letter. She was too busy overthinking things and having a panic attack.

"Em, come on." Rosalie softly told the girl, gently tugging her back into the house to grab their bags. Rosalie stopped in her tracks and turned to face Emma. She quickly put her hands on both sides of Emma's face, forcing the blonde to look her in the eye. "Emma, look at me. They had their reasons for leaving, and I promise that they'll be back."

Emma shook her head. "You can't know that."

"But I know that Jasper would never abandon you, he loves and cares for you too much. Not even Alice could keep him away from you forever." Rosalie softly told the girl. "Trust me on this one, alright?"

Emma hesitated before slowly nodding her head. "Alright." Rosalie gave her wife another reassuring smile before grabbing her hand and walking out the home, going in pursuit of their witness.
