CHAPTER SIXTEEN:
SHOPPING TRIP

1950

EMMA DIDN'T KNOW WHAT she was doing. She would gladly go back to the spot in the woods where she shared her first kiss with her supposed mate. She would do that over and over again. But, Emma still pushed Rosalie away. She was so scared to get close to someone, she was so scared to let someone in. She didn't want someone to know of her past and then think of her as a monster. She and Jasper both had this problem―︎though Jasper was letting the Cullen family in a lot easier than Emma was.

Rosalie had in fact convinced Emma to stay, but Rosalie hadn't expected Emma to shut her out all over again. Emma was a confusing person, and Rosalie was trying so hard to figure her out. In reality, it all came down to the fact that Emma was just paranoid. Rosalie felt that she was somehow doing something wrong.

Emma walked into the living room where all of the Cullen children were sitting. She immediately turned to leave until Jasper grabbed her arm, keeping her from going anywhere. She glared at him whilst he just smirked. She huffed before sitting on the arm of the couch right beside Jasper.

"Oh look, she finally decides to join!" Emmett smiles. Emma glares at him, earning a loud laugh from the boy. Amelia slapped his arm.

"Sorry about Emmett." Amelia says, glaring slightly at the boy before looking back at Emma with a soft smile. "Don't worry though, you'll get used to it."

"If she decides to stay that is." Emmett continues.

"Emmet. Shush." Amelia hissed, slapping the boy on the back of the head. He let out a small "ow" as he brought his hand up to rub the back of his head. Emma couldn't help the smile that tugged at her lip before she forced it away. Of course, Amelia was the only one to notice this, but decided not to comment on it.

"Anyways," Amelia huffed, "Alice, Rosalie, and I were planning on going on a shopping trip. Would you like to join us so that you don't have to be stuck with these idiots?"

Emma glanced at her brother who sent her an encouraging smile. She pulled her bottom lip between her teeth―︎an action that made Rosalie squirm in her seat. She finally nodded her head, looking at the brunette.

"Sure." Her voice was gentle and delicate as she spoke. Amelia's smile widened.

"Great!"

As Emma looked out the window, Alice and Amelia shared wide smiles. Alice held a vision, one that determined whether or not Emma chose to go with them. And when Emma agreed, the vision held a spark of hope for the two blonde females. Maybe this was the key to start the already budding relationship. If Emma and Rosalie were both given the right push―︎though Emma needed the push way more than Rosalie did.

"We should probably leave now, if we want to make it before four." Alice spoke up. Amelia nodded her head in agreement as she stood up. The two brunette's left the room, soon followed by Rosalie, then―︎reluctantly―︎followed by Emma.

"Em, are you alright to ride with Rose?" Amelia asked. Emma was confused as to why they were taking two separate cars, but decided not to question it. Emma nodded her head before getting into the passengers seat of Rosalie's red Buick―︎Alice and Amelia in a black Cadillac. Emma leaned her head against the window as they started towards their destination.

Their was a silence in the car―︎Emma didn't know whether it was a tense silence or just an awkward and uncomfortable one. Rosalie wanted to say something, but she didn't know exactly what to say. Emma didn't care, however, the blonde didn't want to go on the trip anyways but decided to just because she needed to find some way to make it seem like she was trying―︎when really she wasn't.

"Are we going to talk about it?" Rosalie finally asked, cutting through the thick silence. Emma didn't look at her.

"There's nothing to talk about." Emma muttered. Rosalie scoffed. This girl was really messing with her buttons. Rosalie clenched her jaw, her hand tightening around the steering wheel until her knuckles were white.

"Really? There's nothing to talk about?" Rosalie scoffed again. "What? Was that kiss nothing? Did it mean absolutely nothing to you?"

"It was just a kiss." Emma shrugged. Rosalie frowned, the words hitting her like a red-hot knife. The words dug a painful hole into her aching and longing heart.

"I can't believe you just said that to me." Rosalie whispered, shaking her head. Emma rolled her eyes as she finally looked over at the blonde. She noticed the hurt look on the blonde goddess' face, and it hurt her. But, she wasn't going to show it. She was stubborn. She was in denial.

"What do you want me to say, Rosalie?" Emma asked, her jaw clenching slightly. Rosalie glanced over at her before looking back at the road.

"I don't know! Just something! Something that gives some kind of hope." Rosalie answered, her voice was begging Emma to just say the kiss meant something to her. And that it wasn't just another kiss. Which, it wasn't. It was so far from that. It was the best feeling Emma had ever experienced. But, Emma didn't feel like she deserved Rosalie. She felt Rosalie deserved so much better than her.

Emma sighed, running a hand through her blonde locks. "It did mean something." Was all she said before turning her head to look back out the window. Rosalie's lips curved upwards at the four simple words. She was satisfied with that answer. And so, for the rest of the drive, their was nothing but a comfortable silence between the two blondes.

The four vampires arrived at the shopping area in Seattle. Why they drove two hours just to go shopping, Emma would never know. They entered many shops, buying clothing that others thought would look good on them. Emma, however, didn't want to just look at clothes. So, as they were walking out of the store, she smiled when she spotted a book store.

"Hey, I'm going to go look at the books over there. I'll meet up with you guys later." Emma tells them. The three nodded before watching her walk away. Rosalie watched after her, earning a nudge in the side from Amelia. She turned her head to glare at her sister.

"Go." Amelia said. "We'll be fine, won't we Al?"

"Mhm!" Alice hummed with a smile. Rosalie rolled her eyes at her two siblings before listening to them and following after her blonde mate. Emma turned her head at the sound of approaching footsteps. When she saw Rosalie, she cocked an eyebrow.

"What are you doing?" She asked.

"I thought you could use some company." Rosalie answered. Emma didn't respond, instead she opted to just look straight ahead―︎a small smile pulling up at the corner of her lips. She entered the book store with Rosalie in tow. Her fingers fell over the spines of the many books before one caught her eye. She pulled it off the shelf and looked at it. The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Emma smiled and decided to keep it. She wanted at least two new books, so she continued through the store.

"What about this one?" Rosalie asked, grabbing her attention. "The Call of the Wild." Emma grabbed the book from her hand and looked at it, reading the description. She smiled before nodding her head in approval.

"Nice pick." She commented, offering the blonde a gentle smile before going to pay for the two books. Butterflies formed in Rosalie's stomach at the blonde beauty's smile. It made her all giddy inside and she wasn't sure if that was a good thing or not. Rosalie followed the girl out of the book store before they continued their walk.

One step at a time, Rosalie thought to herself. And then another thought popped into the blonde's head, and she was begging that this wouldn't ruin everything. She carefully slipped her hand into Emma's, making sure to keep her eyes forward as if not noticing anything. Emma was planning to remove her hand, but she couldn't help herself. Rosalie's hand fit into hers so perfectly. So instead of pulling away, she interlaced their fingers.
