CHAPTER FORTY-TWO:
BELLA'S NOT DEAD
TO SAY EMMA COMPLAINED the whole time would be an understatement. When they passed the "Welcome to Forks" sign, Emma let out a loud groan. She really didn't want to see Isabella Swan again. She begged Alice for a good thirty minutes to just drop her off on the side of the road and leave her for dead.
"Stop complaining. You've done nothing but that since we left. That was seven hours ago." Alice snapped, glaring at the blonde. Emma glared back.
"Had you not forced my brother to throw me into this stupid car, we wouldn't be in this situation. I don't even understand why we're going to go check up on a dead girl." Emma growled.
"Just, stop speaking! Please." Alice yelled at the girl. Emma cocked an eyebrow in surprise. She crossed her arms over her chest and rolled her eyes.
"This is your fault, you know that, right?" Emma muttered. Alice frowned.
"What do you mean? How is this my fault?"
"You see the future Alice. You knew the trouble this idiot human would bring us, yet you still-" Emma shook her head, cutting herself off. "It's not even worth fighting with you. You probably saw this entire conversations anyways."
"This is childish."
"Yes, Alice. Indeed it is." Emma said with a sarcastic smile. "I'm being a pain in the ass on purpose because I really hate Isabella Swan and want nothing to do with her. So, sorry. Please forgive me for wanting to protect my family."
They didn't speak the rest of the ride. They pulled up at the Swan residence, taking notice of it being empty.
"Look at that, they're probably at the funeral for Bella. Can we go now?" Emma muttered. Alice narrowed her eyes at the blonde before getting out of the car and walking up to the home. Emma watched her before letting out a groan and getting out of the vehicle herself. She slammed the car door closed and walked up to Alice who motioned her hand towards the blonde. Emma gave her a blank look. "Alice, we're vampires. We can jump through the window."
"Picking the lock seems way more fun." Alice responded. Emma looked at her for another second before rolling her eyes and handing Alice the bobby pin she had decided to wear. Alice picked the lock and opened the door with triumph. Emma rolled her eyes at the pixie before entering the home and then closing the door. Emma sat on the couch with a bored expression. All of the lights were off, and not a single word was uttered between the two vampires. After waiting thirty minutes, Emma huffed and stood up.
"Look, she's dead. Can't we-"
"Sh!" Alice hushed. Emma glared before sitting down again. The two turned into statues when they heard the sound of a car pull up. They waited, neither deciding to listen in. Emma was hoping and praying that Bella didn't walk through that door, but to her dismay. She did. Alice was standing right beside of her, watching in a confused manner as the girl turned on the light. Bella jumped and quickly turned to look at Alice.
"Alice?!" Bella asked before throwing herself onto the girl. The two hugged and Bella quickly pulled away.
"Bella!" Alice responded. The pixie girl was still confused.
"I'm sorry! I-uh-I just, I can't believe you're here." Bella quickly stuttered out.
"Well, if it were up to me, we wouldn't be." Emma stated, forcing herself from the couch to stand beside Alice. Her arms were crossed over her chest as she looked at Bella who was surprised by Emma's presence, knowing good and well that the blonde vampire hated her guts.
"Would you like to explain to me how you're alive?" Alice quickly asked.
"What?"
"I saw a vision of you. You jumped off a cliff. Why the hell would you try to kill yourself?! What about Charlie? What about-"
"I didn't try and kill myself." Bella quickly stated, cutting Alice off. "I was cliff jumping. Recreationally. It was fun."
"You look awful." Emma mused. Bella looked at her as did Alice, the latter giving the blonde a glare. They moved over to the couch with Emma sitting on the arm of the couch closest to Alice.
"I have never met anyone more prone to life threatening idiocy." Alice exclaims. There was a silence as Bella looked down in her lap.
"Just. . . did you- did you tell him?" Bella asked. Emma rolled her eyes.
"No." Alice shook her head.
"He's not even staying with us." Emma snarled. "He only calls once every few months. He said he wants to be alone. Thanks for that, by the way."
"Emma!" Alice snapped.
"What? It's the truth."
"Just, shut up." Alice waved. Alice paused and her nose scrunched up in disgust. "Bella, what is that god awful wet dog smell?"
"Um, that's probably me." Bella says, moving to remove her coat from her body. "I-it's Jacob."
Emma smiled mischievously. "He's the one you're in love with as well right?"
"Emma!" Alice turned to look at the girl, giving her a look. She snickered before holding her hands up in surrender. Alice turned back to look at Bella.
"Jacob who?"
"Jacob's kind of a werewolf." Bella stated. Emma's smile widened at the news. Oh how she was going to enjoy this.
"Bella, werewolves are not good company to keep!" Alice chastised.
"Speak for yourself." The two vampires stood up at the sound of Jacob's voice. They turned to look at him. Jacob looked at Bella before saying, "I had to see you were safe."
"I thought you couldn't protect me here." Bella said from her spot on the couch.
"I guess I don't care." Jacob responded. Emma was internally laughing.
"Well, I'm not going to hurt her." Alice tells him. Emma shrugs her shoulders.
"I might."
"No, you're just a harmless Cullen." Jacob responded, looking at Alice. "I'm talking about the other bloodsucker that tried to kill Bella because of you."
"Victoria?" Alice questioned, turning to look at Bella. Emma's lip curled into a snarl at the mention of the redhead's name.
"Yeah, Victoria's been around." Bella nodded.
"I didn't see her. I didn't see you get pulled out of the water either." Alice said. She turned to Jacob in realization. "I can't see past you and your pack of mutts." Emma's eyebrows rose in surprise at Alice's tone of voice, the blonde silently cheering her on in her head.
"Don't get me upset." Jacob said, taking a step forward. Emma's eyes glowed red as she looked at him, daring him to come closer. Bella quickly got in between the three, telling Jacob to stop. "Or things are going to get very ugly."
"Um. . ." Bella said, turning to look at the two vampires. Alice looked at her before nodding.
"We'll give you two a minute." Alice said, taking Emma's hand and forcing them out of the home. They stood outside and Emma looked at Alice.
"Well, this was fun." Emma mused. Alice glared at her. Emma snickered in amusement. "I told you, this was a bad idea." Emma said in a sing-song voice.
"Emma-" Alice stopped speaking as she was pulled into a vision. Emma immediately turned serious when she saw the worried frown that fell upon Alice's face.
"Alice? What did you see?" Emma quickly asked. Alice blinked and looked at the girl.
"It's Edward. He's going to give himself to the Volturi." Alice said. Emma immediately tensed up at the news. The two vampires quickly entered the house.
"Alice? What's wrong?" Bella quickly asked.
"Bella, It's Edward." Alice said. "He thinks you're dead. Rosalie told him why we came here."
Bella turned to Jacob. "That was him calling. Why didn't you let me speak to him?!"
"He didn't ask for you." Jacob defended.
"I don't care!" Bella shouted.
"Bella, he's going to the Volturi." Alice says, holding onto Bella's shoulders. "He wants to die too."
"Bella, we need to go." Emma urgently says. Emma turned to Alice. "I'll start the car." Emma sped out of the home and got into the drivers side of the car. Soon, Alice joined, deciding to sit in the back much to Emma's dismay. Emma backed out so that she was out of the driveway, her window rolled down so that she would have fresh air for when Bella entered the car.
"He didn't want you anymore, remember?" Jacob said, following Bella towards the car.
"I'm not going to let him kill himself out of guilt." Bella says, going to the passengers side of the car as Jacob went to the drivers side, looking at Bella over the roof of the car.
"Well what about your dad?" Jacob asked.
"I'm eighteen. I'm legally allowed to go where I want." Bella tells him. Bella quickly climbs into the car, shutting the door. Jacob leaned in through the window beside of Emma and Emma leaned away from him as far as she could. Jacobs hand was stopping Emma from putting the car in drive. Emma looked at Bella, silently begging her to tell him to go away.
"Please, Bella. Just, stay here. For Charlie. For me." Jacob begged.
"I have to go." Bella tells him. He removes his hand and looks at Bella, both hands on the window now.
"I'm begging you. Please."
"Goodbye, Jacob." Hesitantly, the wolf removes him self from the car and Emma looks at Bella, waiting for her to buckle. When the human finally does, she nods her head and quickly places the car in drive before speeding down the road.
