he should've seen that coming.

"jake, i'm sorry..."

he should've, and yet it still stings like a bitch.

god, i should've known better than to confess to the man who had a difficult time getting over his ex.

"o-oh... yeah i get it, you don't like me-"

heeseung shakes his head in disagreement, holding him by his shoulders.

"i like you- i do..." he looks at him, "but it's not enough, jake. i don't want to date you when i can't even reciprocate your feelings towards me."

it's not... enough? when will it ever be enough for you, heeseung?

jake feels his eyes getting blurry as his tears started forming. he breathed deeply, trying to calm himself.

"is it... is it still sunoo for you?" he whispers. it doesn't matter if he gets hurt, he just wants to know the truth.

he sees the pain flash on heeseung's eyes for a second. "no, jake. it's not about sun-"

"a-are you sure? be fucking honest with me," jake brushed heeseung's hand away from his shoulders.

"because i've been trying to get close to you for god knows how many times, hee. i want to know you too- but fuck, why is that so hard? why is liking you... so hard?"

jake looks at him with tears in his eyes, and heeseung looks away. he hates seeing jake suffer because of him.

"can't i like you? i've never wanted anyone this bad... please," jake grips the hem of heeseung's t-shirt, as if he's so afraid of letting him go. "please... i can love you better than he did."

why do i sound this desperate? i hate this. i don't want to be like this.

he hears heeseung let out a deep sigh, then holds his hand that's been gripping on his shirt.

"no. you can't, jake." his voice was so soft, "you never will." but his words were ice-cold, and they stung jake sharper than a knife could.

jake feels like laughing. i can't, huh? how is this fair? he doesn't even want to give me a chance.

"bullshit..." he finally steps away from heeseung. "you talk so much bullshit."

"jake, i don't mean it like that." heeseung brushed his hand through his hair out of frustration. "fuck it- i'm really sorry..."

"don't apologize, it doesn't make everything better. just so you know, i'm not the kind of person who easily gives up." jake starts to walk back away from the beach.

"wait-" he cuts heeseung off.

"don't fucking follow me. i can go back to the hotel by myself."

jay stops drinking his seventh can of beer when he finally sees heeseung walking back to their cottage.

he frowned when he realized that jake isn't with him. he stood up to walk towards him.

"where's jake?" heeseung didn't answer and just avoided his gaze.

"where the hell is jake, lee heeseung?" jay repeats, his voice is firm. "answer me while i'm still nice to you."

heeseung massaged his temple, "he went back to the hotel."

"what? and you just let him go back alone?"

"he wants to be alone, jay. if you want you can go check on him." heeseung grabs a bottle of hennessy from the icebox. he just wants to get wasted tonight.

before he could even sit on the monobloc chair, jay pulls him by his arm.

"...he confessed to you-"

"and i rejected him." heeseung cut him off.

"what?" jay spats out. "you should've just accepted him! you said you'll try to like him!"

heeseung closed his eyes for a second, feeling his headache coming. "look, i'm tired. let's just talk tom-"

heeseung's words were cut short when he fell to the sand, wincing as jay punched his face. he feels the burning pain on the side of his mouth. this is definitely gonna bruise tomorrow.

"ouch, jay. did that make you feel good?"

he looks up to see jay's reaction, but the guy is staring at him with anger and guilt in his eyes.

"shut up."

he can't even punch someone without feeling guilty.

"what the hell is happening here?"

sunoo and riki just arrived. sunoo looks at them back and forth, as if he's trying to analyze the situation.

"did you just punch heeseung?!" jay didn't speak, his head lying low.

"we're fine, sun. just a misunderstanding." the older stood up, removing the sand from his shorts before grabbing his drink again. "don't mind us."

riki glanced at sunoo, feeling a bit weird out but they didn't question anything. jay quietly walked back to the hotel, leaving them.

they were quiet for a moment until hiyyih and jungwon went back from their swim.

jungwon just stormed off, walking away while his eyes seemed red from crying. hiyyih is following him, looking a bit confused and shocked.

"wait what's going on?" riki asked, getting confused.

"i honestly have know idea," hiyyih laughs nervously. "he was arguing with sunghoon about something and then jungwon slapped him."

sunoo was flabbergasted. what the hell is happening to them?! i just wanted a peaceful vacation but what the fuck?

jay breathed sharply before knocking on jake's room.

"...jake? it's jay." no one answered. he knocks again, this time louder.

"jake, please. i'm here. can you open the door for me?" his voice sounds pleading. he wants to know if jake's okay. he wanted to be there for his best friend.

jay hears a shuffling noise inside, then the door finally opened- revealing jake who's already wearing his pajamas.

"hey," he smiled at him weakly.

jay pulled him into a hug, sighing in relief. he felt jake hugging him back- whispering a small thank you on his ear.

"it's a bit late and i'm sleepy so..." his best friend pulls away from his embrace. "see you tomorrow."

he nodded. he stares at jake's face, looking at his swollen eyes. "don't cry too much, it'll dehydrate and tire you out. sleep well okay?"

jake smiles again. "noted, you too." he waves at him before closing the door.

---

"oho, you finished the hennessy?"

sunghoon sits right across heeseung, who is now drinking a beer. he looks like he just got out of the shower after swimming, his hair is still wet.

"there's another one inside the ice box."

"thanks, dude." sunghoon opens the bottle up and pours the alcohol into his cup. "so, i heard you dumped jake."

heeseung chuckled, the bitter taste of the beer spreading in his mouth.

"and jay punched the hell out of you."

sunghoon laughs, clapping his hand as if he's enjoying the whole situation. crazy bastard, heeseung shakes his head.

"who even told you?"

"who do you think?" the journalist raised an eyebrow at him. "damn, i wished i witnessed all of that."

"you could've, but i heard you were busy getting slapped by jungwon."

sunghoon stopped drinking and raised his middle finger. heeseung laughs, then winced as he felt the pain on his cheek.

"how did you even let him slap you?" he managed to ask.

"just like how jay managed to land a punch on your face, i guess." sunghoon smirks, tilting his head to the side.

"i just felt awful after rejecting jake," heeseung sighed. "i deserve this, at least."

"if you feel awful then you should've just dated him. easy peasy, why complicate such thing?"

"it's not easy, smartass."

"of course it is," sunghoon is now eating a marshmallow that he found inside their food basket. "you know what? maybe they'll date each other soon."

he frowned. "what?"

"jake is probably not going to hold on to you, right? then maybe, he'll realize jay's feelings for him. or maybe jay will take his chance. who knows?"

he has a point, an accurate one at that. but why do i suddenly feel uncomfortable in knowing those possibilities?

"ah, heeseung. you complicated, computer freak. does your brain run on codes too?" sunghoon snickered.

heeseung did not react and just finished drinking his beer. if my brain runs on codes, then maybe it would've been easier to fix whatever's wrong with me.
