"you fucking idiot, i don't wanna get cramps in the middle of an ocean!"

jake can only shake his head while looking at the younger ones who are now swimming. he's wearing his beach shorts and white shirt- not planning to go near the water for the next hour.

he looks around, his eyes now landed on his best friend who is busy digging up the sand with sunghoon. what the hell is he doing?

"you don't want to swim with them?" he looks back just to see heeseung walking towards him with a sunscreen on his hand.

"nope, maybe later." heeseung nods at his answer, "what about you?"

"i'm not really a fan of beaches."

"oh..." jake falters, it seems like he's running out of words to say.

"want some sunscreen?" the older offered, waving the sunscreen that he's holding.

he shakes his head, smiling. "i'm good, i already put some earlier."

heeseung nods again, his attention now focused on his friends who are busy digging something under the sand.

"let's go have fun." jake hears heeseung laughed before running towards their direction.

did he just laugh? i mean, i've heard him laugh before ... but that one sounded more genuine.

maybe i'm just thinking too much. jake brushed off his own thoughts and followed heeseung.

"i don't know what we're doing," sunghoon grumbled.

"we're building a sand castle, dumbass." jay rolled his eyes and continued to dig up the sand. the white sand feels soft around his fingers, so he feels relaxed.

think about relaxing thoughts, jay. don't stress yourself over things that you have no control over.

"so..." sunghoon talks again while shaping small blocks of sand. "how are things between you and your best friend?"

he sighed. so much for thinking about happy thoughts. "there are no things between us. he's still my best friend."

"gods i can't believe i'm friends with a chicken like you."

"i can't believe i'm friends with a psychopath like you, either."

sunghoon scrunched up his nose as if he finds it irritating. "you know what, maybe you're just too blind to see it. but i think jake doesn't only see you as a friend."

jay halted for a bit, then tried to ignore what the guy just said. he's just making things up, 'cause that's what most journalists do when they're bored. they make things up.

"what? you don't believe me?"

is it that obvious? jay didn't answer and just raised his eyebrow at him.

"i don't sugarcoat things, bro. you fucking know that. i don't lie- okay maybe i do lie sometimes..."

"yo, what are you two doing?"

sunghoon zips his mouth immediately when heeseung approached them. he also sees jake following suit, walking behind the older.

"nothing much, just building a sandcastle with my ever loving bff." sunghoon smiles, his face full of sarcasm.

"oh were you making a castle? i thought it was a grave. you were digging nonstop since we arrived." heeseung replied, glancing at jay who didn't even spare them a look.

"it is a grave too, for jay's shattered pieces of hear- aw!" jay throws a seashell right on top of sunghoon's head to shut him up.

heeseung chuckles, "want some sunscreen?" he asked, looking at jay.

right. i forgot to put one earlier, my skin will definitely get deep fried under the sun.

he reached for the sunscreen and took it from heeseung's hand. "thanks."

"hey guys!" jake sits beside jay, beaming with happiness. "let's do a bonfire later!"

"sure, we can do that." jay quickly agreed while being busy applying some sunscreen on his arms.

"let's buy some booze too. i think i'm going to need a drink later." sunghoon stands up, shaking off the sand that stuck on his shorts.

i second the motion. jay closed the lid of the sunscreen before handing it back to heeseung. "here, thanks again."

"you're welcome."

jay frowned when he sees heeseung staring at him again. 'what?' he mouthed at him.

heeseung shakes his head. 'nothing.' he mouths back, but his smile says otherwise.

why the fuck is he smiling like that? it's annoying.

"guys! it's time to eat!" sunoo yells from the cottage.

nevermind, i should just enjoy this vacation.

the night came, and they're still enjoying their beach trip. they decided to make a bonfire, then ate some smores right after.

sunoo and ni-ki are now off to somewhere, enjoying their alone time. while jungwon and hiyyih continued their swimming, jay and sunghoon sat in front of the bonfire as they drank some cold beer.

"dude, i'm just going for a swim to sober up." sunghoon says after drinking three cans of beer. "you're just gonna stay here?"

he nodded, feeling the alcohol in his system a bit. "yeah, go ahead."

sunghoon pats his shoulder before joining hiyyih and jungwon, who are swimming not far from the shore.

jay was trying so hard not to third wheel jake and heeseung, so he's been following sunghoon around all day.

he told me about his plan after all, and i don't want to ruin that. jay raised his head to stare at the sky above him.

the sky looks so clear and full of stars. he sighed and closed his eyes for a brief moment.

when did i even start liking him? it felt like forever to me. i just want this to be over now.

jay stares at the two familiar figures walking far from him. did jake finally ask him out? are they dating now?

he finishes another can of beer. i'm so hopeless.

"are you having fun?" heeseung asked, trying to strike a conversation with jake.

jake nodded. "it's my first time being in jeju with my friends."

he's been nervous since earlier, and it's a good thing that heeseung didn't ask him anything when he said that he wanted to walk with him after their dinner.

"that's great," heeseung smiled. "it's been a while since i've been on a trip too."

"yeah, honestly this feels like a dream to me... especially now that you're here."

jake finally stops walking, mustering up his courage. he holds heeseung's hand.

"hee- hyung, you know that i like you... right?"

heeseung stares back at him. looking at his eyes right now, jake still feels like he barely knows the guy in front of him.

"i know, jake."

jake breathes out. "i- i've been meaning to ask you this since we've gotten closer, but i never really had the chance to get the right amount of courage so...."

meanwhile, heeseung slowly feels like he couldn't move. he knows what's going to happen.

"jake-"

"will you be my boyfriend?"

jake's eyes were full of hope, and heeseung couldn't bear the thought of breaking him.

but i don't want to give him something that i don't have, either. i can't like him the way he likes me.

"jake, i'm sorry..."

he watched as jake slowly lose his smile. he watched as jake's eyes lost its spark.

that's all he could always do. watch.
watch as everyone around him loses their happiness because of him.

you deserve someone better, jake. someone capable of loving you wholeheartedly. someone that isn't me.
