IN A HAWKINS still deeply shaken by the events of the summer of 1985, news of alleged murders begins to stir up the townspeople, who demand an explanation for these mysterious occurrences and greater security from the authorities.

EMILY GARRIDO had always known she was destined for something more than an algebra test and the silly high school football games, but what she had in mind was far removed from fighting demonic monsters in another dimension. She knew there was something much bigger in store for her than she expected, but the perfect moment for this revelation had yet to arrive, forcing her to bide her time working at Hawkins' video rental store, trapped in an endless cycle of events that seemed to suffocate her as she waited for her acceptance letter from the California Institute of the Arts.

EMILY didn't believe in monsters: after all, she wasn't five years old anymore, and even experimenting with certain amusing substances had never made her see them—though they would have been quite an inspiration while painting. Yet, listening to the clear and melodic voice of Steve Harrington recounting tales of faceless creatures and girls with telekinetic powers didn't seem so silly after all.
