Chapter 62 ~ Follow the Yellow Brick Road

Note: So...that fish story reference is my own little inside joke from when I was a kid lol. Okay, enjoy!

Episode: Season 9 - Slumber Party

Everything was slowly getting back to normal after Sam and I got home from the hospital a few weeks ago. Of course, Dean had informed me of what had taken place while I was unconscious - that Ezekiel was now possessing Sam. Not that Sam knew that, though. Oh and that Cas was human now and my dad was locked in the basement. Which was a weird concept to be quite honest.Β

I cooed at the small infant nestled in my arms then, giggling as he latched onto my finger with his tiny hand.

"It's time for a nap, Roman. Little boys need their rest." I said to him in a baby voice before lying him down in his crib.

Gazing one last time down at my son whom I already loved with all my heart, I exited the room and began to make my way down the empty corridor. Things were so good lately. Well, apart from the Sam-possession thing, of course. Even Sam was happy. As well as Dean and I. My mind flashed back to last night in that moment, remembering the conversation between the brothers that I'd overheard.

"What about you? How's the, uh, the engine running?" Dean asked him as he took a swig of beer from his glass.

I could just see their forms lounging in the library chairs from where I stood just on the other side of the doorway.

"Honestly, um, I feel better than I have in a long time. I mean, I realize it's crazy out there and we have trouble coming for us. But I look around and I-I see friends and family," Sam confessed, gesturing to Dean at the last word before continuing, "I am happy with my life for the first time in...forever."

A smile split my face as tears brimmed in my brown eyes. I was so happy they'd finally made up. A silent scoff left my mouth then as I brushed the escaping tears away with the back of my hand. Stupid hormones.

Suddenly, there was a commotion from the main room and I frowned, wondering what was going on. But as soon as I rounded the corner, I saw a flash of bright red hair and a grin split my face.

"Charlie!" I shrieked happily, racing over to pull the girl into a bear-hug just as her foot had barely left the bottom step of the stairs.

She laughed when we broke apart before the boys and I showed her the computer we needed fixed.

"So you've been hunting," Sam finally broke the ice once she'd explained how she was going to fix it.

"Alone," Dean added pointedly.

"I know. Not a good idea according to the Supernatural books," Charlie admitted, making me grin.

"You really can't delete those from the Internet?" Sam asked in obvious annoyance.

"Not even I can do that. Come on," Charlie scoffed, rolling her green eyes, "Besides, why would I even want to? Darker is the best love story ever written,"

Dean and I blushed scarlet before he cleared his throat, "Where do you even find them?"

"A top-secret place I call Amazon," she deadpanned, making me snort, "And someone uploaded all the unpublished works. I thought it was fanfic at first, but it was clearly Edlund's work,"

"Who uploaded it?" Sam questioned.

She shrugged, "I don't know. Their screen name was beckywinchester176. Ring a bell?"

Dean shot Sam a pointed look at that. Now it was Sam's turn to blush.

"None. Uh, nobody's. Uh, no, there are no bells. Uh, no..." Sam stuttered uncontrollably.

A loud laugh escaped my mouth before I noticed Dean's disgruntled, grumpy expression. I rolled my eyes, wrapping my arms around him from where I stood by his seated figure and pressed my lips to the side of his head in a sweet peck. After Charlie set the software to downloading to fix the problem, we all headed to Sam's room to watch TV. A couple of hours later as the show ended, Dean clicked the TV off.

"Wow, that Joffrey's a jerk," Dean commented and I laughed along with Charlie.

"Oh, you have no idea. Wait until he-" she started to say before Sam cut her off.

"Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa! S-spoilers. I haven't read all the books yet," he said with a slight smile tugging at his lips.

"You're gonna read the books?" Dean asked in confusion.

"Yes, Dean. I like to read books - you know, the ones without pictures?" Sam told him, rolling his eyes.

"So how'd you get into watching Game of Thrones anyway?" Charlie asked me, as if the thought had just occurred to her.

I smiled at her from where I was snuggled up against my husband, his arm resting across my shoulders, "I had a friend once that got me into it actually. She was obsessed with it - books included,"

Sam shot me a smile of approval before Dean frowned.

"What friend? What are you talking about?" he asked, clearly confused.

"It was when you were away." I said, patting the leg of his jeans gently.

It didn't take long for Charlie to get the software working as it happens. But then...we had another issue. Somehow Dorothy, a member of the Men of Letters, had found her way through her time to our time.Β

I grinned in excitement as Charlie and I poured over one of the old case files, "The first case investigated in this bunker involved Dorothy. She and the witch came into this room, and they never came out,"

"This will never stop blowing my mind!" I admitted cheerfully, "Oz is real. It's part of the fairy world!"

"Okay, pace yourself, Toto. And please don't tell the fish story again." Dean told pointedly, earning an eye roll from yours truly.

Let's just say, it took all day to get the Wicked Witch out of the Bunker after that. But when she left, Dorothy had to go, too...along with Charlie. I was saddened to see my best friend go but I knew it was all for the best. She needed that - a quest like she'd always wanted.
