𝔗he war had led to a lot of changes within the demigod world and I was in the middle of it all. After the dust had settled from the fall of Kronos, we'd been tasked with finding and identifying our dead.

That had been hard.

Despite the fact that I was only just about to hit seventeen, I'd been considered the oldest in the Hephaestus cabin, and thus, I'd been nominated as the leader. I'd turned eighteen, left for college to study structural engineering (which shouldn't have been a surprise considering who my father was), the second war had started and I had been called back during my first year of studying.

There'd been even more destruction after that and I had found that my talents had been called into play, to help build the new cabins for the camp and other amenities whilst working with my siblings and the Athena cabin.

Well, one particular member of the Athena cabin.

Annabeth Chase was a well known figure around camp. She was one of the Heroes of Olympus, in both wars, incredibly clever, and her architectural skills were legendary. She and I had been working closely together for about six months.

She designed the buildings, I made them a reality and we worked well together. We had always worked well together.

"There you are." I twisted away from my desk. One of Annabeth's newest designs was laid out in front of me as I worked out how best to go about building it and how long it would take. The smaller, blonde woman appeared, her laptop in her arms as she dragged a chair over. "How's it going?"

"It's going." I shrugged. "I'm having to make some adjustments to make it structurally sound but it's doable."

"What did you need to change?"

"Add in some columns here, make the top bit lighter so that the roof doesn't cave in." I twisted to point the areas out. "Hopefully, it doesn't disrupt the masterful design of yours too much."

"I don't mind that as long as it doesn't collapse on anyone." Annabeth pointed out, with a shrug, plugging her laptop in and setting it up beside me. "Don't think that'll be too good for anyone."

"Tell me about it." I muttered, before adding in the final dimensions before I had to go about sourcing the materials needed. Each of these cabins took at least a few months to build and we were lucky to be children of Hephaestus too, otherwise it would have taken far longer. Our father provided the building material, and we did the work. At the moment, I was overseeing four cabins being built. Two were almost finished, one was midway through, the other just starting and then this structure would make five. "What can I do for you?"

"Camp Jupiter messaged. Needed my, well our, expertise." Annabeth pointed out, taking some of the snacks that I kept on the desk and eating them as she opened her laptop and showed me her notes. "Apparently, they hadn't realised that some of their buildings had more structural damage than they had thought, until they did their own scan on it and found that out."

"Don't they have their own children of Vulcan to do this sort of things?"

"That's who did the scans, but they're not as good as you."

"Almost sounded like a compliment." I teased, shooting her a grin as the nineteen year old rolled her eyes and hummed. "I mean, I'll need time to think about it and do it. Roman architecture, whilst it has some similarities to Greek, the structure is different. I don't know whether these buildings have been built using modern techniques or whether they're using Roman techniques because they're all about tradition."

I shrugged.

"I know, I thought about that too." Annabeth hummed, flicking some other plans up and rotating them for me to have a look at and point out structural issues. "But, maybe it's something to think about for later. Would be fun to do Roman architecture."

"Yeah, for you." I replied. "I'm going to have to go about sourcing Roman cement or something like that."

"Yes, but that's why you're the best." Annabeth grinned.

"Don't try and butter me up." I pointed back at her. "Especially when you're not about to give me more work."

She winked once more as I sighed, before accepting the laptop and leaning back in my chair to continue to read through her works. Despite knowing that this was going to be a lot extra on my plate whilst I chose how to prioritise what needed to be built, I knew that at the end of the day, I'd accept the workload.

I loved building and creating, making designs come to life. And I loved being able to see Annabeth's face light up at the end of it all when her designs were right there in front of her. That made everything a lot better.

My siblings had a bit too much fun teasing me about my quite obvious crush, but I couldn't help myself really. I spent so much time with Annabeth that it was bound to happen, but I wouldn't act on it. Not when it would break the friendship and professional relationship we had now.

"So?" I turned to Annabeth, looking down at the smaller woman as she stared up at the now completed cabin. We'd managed to finish one of the designs quicker than previously thought. "What do you think?"

Her expression had lit up, eyes wide and shining as she stared at her design come to life ahead of her. She grinned.

"You're incredible."

"I know." I folded my arms, before seeing her shoot me a withering glare. "Look, this one wasn't as much me. You should thank my siblings, they did this one without me supervising as much."

"Yes, but if they hadn't of had you, we'd have no material and no plan." I gave in at that. A hand held onto my shoulder, as a pair of lips hit my cheek and I was sure that I was blushing like a madman. Annabeth grinned, before letting go. "You gonna show me around?"

"Yeah." I nodded, following after her in a slightly awestruck way as I began to point out design features that had been requested for each particular cabin, things that the other builders had made adjustments to make things more efficient, and then what room each will be. "Obviously, furniture isn't in yet. Chiron's got to get that sorted and you and him have to take a trip to go and buy stuff."

"I need to get the funds somewhere first."

"Ask you mom, that's what I do with my dad." I shrugged. "I point out that he's been an absent father and thus, he's got to pay for all the building supplies for everything that I'm doing because that way, he's paying reparations of a sort."

"You're right, I should do that."

"Always good to con a god out of money." I joked, before showing her the final bits. "Anyway, here's the dorm room area as well. We've got enough space for 10 people or so. Think that works?"

"It's perfect. They'll love it." She nudged him. "Also, Camp Jupiter's head builder called again. They want to speak to you about doing the building work."

"Yeah, if he calls you, set up a meeting and I'll speak to him about it." I agreed before both of us turned and left the cabin. "Right, I've got some other things to finish up. There are some designs and armour that I need to do."

"Something not architectural for once, you must be happy about that."

"Ecstatic." I chuckled. "I've got a nice helmet, a couple of swords and some new arrows to work in the forges with. Back to my roots as a blacksmith."

She laughed at that, rolling her eyes slightly before waving and disappearing from view. I watched her go for a moment before turning back to the forges. I had a lot to do.

Over the next few weeks, I was slammed with work. Not only did I have cabins to finish, I had weapon and armour orders to sort through and distribute amongst my siblings and I had been in contact with my Vulcan siblings to help them with their issues in New Rome.

"Hey." I paused, pushing my goggles up and placing the blade back into water to cool as I twisted towards Annabeth. She was waiting in the door for me to tell her that it was alright for her to come in.

"Hey." I waved her in, pulling my gloves off as she meandered over. "What can I do for you? Everything alright?"

"I just wanted to ask you a question, that's all." Annabeth smiled. "No more plans. Everything's good for the moment."

"Oh, for sure, fire away." I grinned, crossing off what I'd done on the big whiteboard in the forges.

"I just wondered who was working on the double edged sword, with the embossed hilt." Annabeth questioned, following after me.

"I did. Just about finished it." I grinned at her. "Why? You wanted it?"

"Well, I was just wondering..." Annabeth trailed off.

"I didn't think you needed a new weapon. You need your dagger finetuning or anything?" I offered as her eyebrows furrowed.

"You-" She stopped herself. Annabeth reached behind her, unsheathing her dagger and hanging it over to me. "You know what, yeah, that would work."

"Of course." I grinned. "I'll do it first."

Annabeth hummed, looking like she wanted to say something else, but she didn't manage to, instead spinning on her heel and stalking out, a scowl plastered on her face. I watched her go, narrowing my eyes,

"What was that about?" My brother, Jake, called out, watching Annabeth disappear. "You change one of her designs or something?"

"I'm not that dumb." I pointed out. "I actually don't know. Anyway, she's given me her dagger to finetune so, I'll just get that done and then we'll see."

"Don't screw it up."

"Have some faith." I rolled my eyes, examining the dagger in my hand as I tried to work out what to do. She hadn't given me any instructions, so I just did what I thought would help out most of all.

Annabeth's dagger was in near perfect condition, and I knew that Annabeth took great care of it, so making the necessary changes that I thought were needed was quick. Simply put it, I was finished just before dinner and I set out to find Annabeth once more.

"Hey." I knocked on the door for the Athena cabin. "Hi, where's Annabeth?"

"In the back." One of her brother's, Malcolm, called. "I'll grab her for you."

"Thanks." I leant in the door, watching as two of her younger sisters giggled and rushed past me, causing me to chuckle.

"What are you laughing about?" Annabeth appeared. She was dressed in a large oversized shirt and shorts, combatting the late summer heat.

"Nothing." I grinned, before flipping the dagger in my hand and holding it out to her. "Got this for you."

I leant against the door as Annabeth examined it quickly, testing the balance and the feel as I watched her do it softly.

"I sharpened it, changed the balance slightly. Changed the hilt as well, in a sense. Just changed the gripping to make it better." I explained. "Hope that's all alright. You didn't really tell me what you needed from me, so, this is what I did."

"Thank you." Annabeth smiled, before sheathing it and grinning up at me. We fell into silence for a second, before Annabeth sighed. "Look, I-I wasn't completely honest with you. I was testing a theory."

"What's the theory?" My eyebrows furrowed. Was she questioning if I would do it for her? "How good I am at blacksmithing and building?"

"No, close. If my tattoo would change."

"Which tattoo?"

"This one. You haven't seen it." Annabeth pulled her shirt up slightly, tilting to show the right side of her ribs. On it was an intricate design of her own dagger and my eyebrows furrowed.

"Can I?" I questioned, motioning to the tattoo. She nodded.

Leaning down, I reached forward, noting that the tattoo had the dimensions for the dagger, the intricate detailing that I had just added to the hilt was present and the blade looked sharp even when just ink on the skin.

"Did you guess the detailing I'd put in on the handle?" I questioned, my eyebrows furrowed in confusion as I stood back up to my full height and looked down at her. "It's an incredible tattoo, highly realistic."

"It was a helmet." I was now thoroughly confused. "When I got the tattoo done, it was a helmet. It's one of those Apollo cabin tattoos that moves and changes but it didn't for a while and then one day it just started."

"Why does it change? I thought most were signifying something like being able to help with navigation and stuff."

"Well, I first thought it was supposed to be something to do with what I should build next, but it would change after I'd made my new project, so I knew it wasn't that." Annabeth explained. "I went through all the logical conclusions and then I remembered a conversation that we had a few weeks ago."

"Yes?" She blushed, before putting her head in her hands.

"Oh, gods above, this is embarrassing."

"What's embarrassing?"

"This." She was blushing, right to her ears.

"I don't get it."

"The tattoo keeps changing into things that you're building. The cabins, the helmets, the dagger, it keeps changing to what you make and then, it sounds super stupid and cringy, but apparently, sometimes, the Apollo cabin makes these tattoos that show you who you're soulmate is and oh, gods above!" Annabeth looked mortified as I tried not to chuckle. "Now you're laughing at me."

"I'm not laughing at you."

"You're laughing at me!" Annabeth snarled as I caught her hands and pulled her forward until I could wrap her in a hug. She froze slightly, her arms wrapped loosely around my waist as I rocked us. "This is so awkward."

"I think that's in your head." I pointed out as she flushed even further red.

"This is embarrassing and awkward and gods, that was horrible." I chuckled again. "You're still laughing at me!"

"I'm not!" I said between chuckled, before pulling back as she glared up at me with narrowed grey eyes.

"I'm going to find my cap, turn invisible and never come out again."

"How am I supposed to know where you are?"

"You won't. That's the point." She groaned in annoyance. "Stupid tattoo. Stupid Apollo cabin. Stupid, stupid, stupid."

I watched on.

"So am I stupid too?"

"No!" Annabeth turned back to look at me. "I just-I hate-Stupid tattoo making me confess! Gods...!"

"I admit, it's a little unconventional of a confession. But, I can take you on a date if you want and I can embarrass myself then instead and confess? Then you can tell everyone it was me who confessed first and not you." Annabeth froze, watching me with wide grey eyes. "That way, this confession is our little secret."

"You'd do that?"

"If it makes you feel more comfortable, of course." I grinned. "So, can I take you on that date?"

"I'd like that." Annabeth was blushing again, her ears going red first as she sent me a soft smile. "Then you promise we can forget about my awful confession."

"I thought it was cute, but yes, course." She smiled at that, her hand holding onto mine tightly before watching me. "Can I kiss you?"

"I'd like that."

I leant down, my hand cupping her cheek, before pressing a soft kiss to her lips. It was brief and fleeting, over in only a few seconds, but her face followed mine, asking for another one all the same. Reluctantly, I had to pull away, knowing that we were in front of her cabin and she'd be even more embarrassed if her siblings saw her.

"Later, once we're on our date." I laughed. "I'll pick you up tomorrow, at seven?"

"Alright." Her hand stayed in mine as I walked off. "What do I wear?"

"Jeans and a nice top, nothing too fancy."

"How long have you been planning this?" I winked in response, before turning away from her and disappearing back to my cabin. I left her on the porch, her cheeks flushed red and a happy grin on her face.

epilogue

"Sorry, hi, here to see Miss Annabeth Chase." I grinned as I stood in front of the reception desk. "Is she available?"

"Of course, sir. She's up on the tenth floor, in her office."

"Brilliant. Thank you." I was handed a lanyard, easily buzzing through the security options and following a familiar path to the elevators and travelling upwards. I felt a little under dressed considering I was in my work clothes, a worn out long sleeved shirt, paint splattered utility trousers and steel cap boots. I'd managed to leave my utility belt in the car, along with my jacket that was covered in dust. I knew that I had to look somewhat presentable going into the office, especially since everyone else was in suits.

They were giving me dirty looks.

Most got out on the lower level, only a few continuing further up to the highest level as I did.

On the tenth floor, I was given a good view of New York city. Turning left, I headed down the hall to one of the corner offices. Miss A. Chase was engraved onto the door. Knocking, I heard a faint come in, before opening the door.

"Hi." I leant in the doorway, watching as Annabeth's head snapped up from her design, a wide grin forming on her face. "Thought I'd pop in. Just finished up nearby."

"Hi honey." She grinned, hurrying around her desk to wrap her arms around my neck as I picked her up with one arm, kissing the side of her head gently.

"I brought lunch." I held up the bag in my other hand. "Tacos from that shop you like. Still warm."

"You are the best fiancé ever." I beamed at that.

I'd outdone myself with the ring. Granted, it was incredibly difficult to do because Annabeth had a tattoo that showed her what I was working on. So, it had taken many nights when I knew that she was asleep, working on the ring before working on other weapons so that she couldn't know what I was doing.

It had worked though, and when I had proposed, she has been shocked that I'd managed to pull it off and surprise her.

I'd given myself a pat on the back for that.

"I love you, you are the best." I zoned back in, noting that she had unpacked the food and was licking her lips. "You going to sit down or stand there staring?"

I laughed, before taking the chair opposite her with a grin. All of this from building cabins with her to recover from a war.

Hiya,

So, this is the Annabeth version of the tattoo au thing-y. Just got Percy and Hazel to go and then we move onto requests and a lot of other fun things. I just really like this one, I think it's super cute that her tattoo changes to match what they're building and they're normally building things for her. What cuties. Love them.

Let me know what you think,

Love Li xx
