[ 003 ] SPEED CURSUS F1
DELILAH STIRS awake by the light peeking through the curtains. By the view of her room, she is reminded of the reality of being in Monaco. The smell of bacon fills her nostrils as she still needs to adjust to the fact that she is in Monaco. Monaco.
She enters the kitchen where Max is preparing a few things for breakfast. "Good morning," Max greets cheerfully. She mutters a good morning and yawns while taking place at the kitchen bar.
"Take whatever you wish," Max speaks and gestures to the kinds of food. She sends him a smile and starts putting food on her plate.
"How did you sleep?" he questions before sipping his coffee. Delilah takes a sip of her orange juice and nods.
''I passed out the moment my head hit the pillow,'' she chuckles. He chuckles as his eyes fall on a necklace she didn't wear when she arrived.
''Birthday present?'' he questions curiously but genuinely. Delilah reaches for the silver necklace around her neck. Her fingers fiddle with the clover as she remembered her moment with Charles yesterday.
''Charles gifted it to me,'' she smiles, taking a spoon of eggs into her mouth. The savory taste of eggs never seems to disappoint. ''Did you scramble these eggs?'' she questions before Max can react to Charles' birthday present. Max nods before he starts acting offensively.
''Did you really think that I can't cook?'' Max questions, pretending to be hurt. His hand grasps his heart as he acts on a pained expression. Delilah simply watches her brother play his scene before answering.
''Never thought of it,'' she says. ''I never imagined you cooking, only setting the place on fire.'' Max opens his mouth to pretend to be wounded by her words. ''Don't be so dramatic,'' Delilah rolls her eyes and turns to the book gifted by the drivers. She opens the book and starts reading chapter one, created by Charles and Lando.
''It is pretty funny to read this in their voices,'' Delilah laughs. ''And they are so enthusiastic with explaining.''
''It was so much fun making that book,'' he chuckles. Max takes a look at the time, realizing time is short. ''Eat up and get ready,'' he says. ''We need to leave in half an hour.'' Delilah nods and gulps down her cup of tea.
''Do I need some kind of Red Bull attire or?'' Delilah questions.
"I don't have any at the moment," he answers. "What I do have is a paddock pass." Delilah nods before disappearing to her room. After a swift weather check, she chooses her clothing.
After thirty minutes, the two leave on their bikes. As soon as they arrive, they scan their passes to gain access to the paddock. While they make their way, Artemis greets them with a wide smile.
"I'll catch you later," Delilah says to Max, basically dismissing him. He raises an eyebrow before walking away. Both women watch Max interact with Daniel, causing Artemis to glance at Delilah. She silently deducts whether she knows about Max. Then she suddenly remembers the death of their mother.
"My condolences," Artemis says. She watches Delilah avert her gaze to meet her eyes. She nods and a faint smile graces her lips. Artemis notices the hurtful look in her eyes and she cannot say she knows how it feels, because both of her parents are gracing the earth.
"Thank you," Delilah says. "That's nice of you."
"Max had a difficult time during her death. Just like you, of course," Artemis adds quickly. Her sentence ends with desperation because she doesn't know how Delilah would react. She meets Delilah's eyes, only to see kindness. No repulsion.
"I can imagine," Delilah answers. "Having to perform while the loss of your mother is lingering in your head." This gave Artemis the confidence to continue her story — well, Max's story.
"He struggled to the point where he blamed himself for not checking in on you or your sister."
"Am I a bad brother?" Max suddenly asks. Daniel and Artemis looked up in confusion.
"No, of course not," Artemis replies, "what makes you think that?"
"I wasn't there for Delilah nor Victoria," Max continues. "Max, I need you to listen to me," Artemis says and stops in her tracks, "You are a Formula One driver. A pretty talented one. You have a busy schedule. You are a busy person. You can't keep up with all things. You are doing an amazing job, Max." Max sends her a faint smile as he wraps his arms around Artemis. "Thank you."
"He did?" Delilah asks softly, "I had no idea."
"I know and I don't know if this was for me to tell you but you mustn't think bad of Max."
"I do not," Delilah smiles, "I'm only grateful he asked me to come over."
"I'm glad as well," Artemis smiles, "nice bracelet by the way." She winks and starts to walk away. Once again, Delilah is left stunned behind. "They are too much alike," she mutters under her breath as she starts walking in her direction.
"Oh, Artemis," Delilah calls. Artemis spins around and meets her eyes.
"What's up, babe?"
"Is there any chance you can show me around?" Delilah questions. A heat rises to her neck from embarrassment. She scratches the back of her neck as she watches Artemis spin around to meet her eyes.
''Course,'' she smiles. ''This is the pit lane.'' She opens her arm to show the tight lane. Delilah rolls her eyes in a playful way.
''Well, I knew that.''
''Normally the speed limit is 80, however, here in Monaco it's 60 because it is such a tight lane,'' she continues. They pass the Mercedes pit box as Artemis waves to a man. Delilah glances at the man, recognizing him as Toto Wolff.
''My father,'' she explains quickly. Toto returns her gesture by waving. ''I am their photographer, meaning I will shoot photos of their cars but I'm often found in the garage with my father.'' Artemis then points at the banners above the boxes. ''Those seem obvious to me and the smart woman you must be, it is obvious to you too.''
''Yeah,'' Delilah chuckles. ''Quite obvious.''
''You know what day it is?'' Artemis questions, crossing her arms over her chest. Delilah averts her gaze from Artemis, thinking what day it is.
''It's Saturday, meaning it is qualification day,'' Delilah answers. Artemis praises her and questions what she knows of it. Meanwhile, they pass every team until they reach the last one -- Williams. ''I know they have 3 qualifying times, and—''
''Hello, love,'' George Russell interrupts Delilah by placing a kiss on his girlfriend's temple. ''Hello, Delilah.''
''Hi, my love,'' Artemis smiles.
''What are the ladies doing?'' he questions with a smile.
''Well, you were interrupting Delilah in her maxplaining qualifying,'' Artemis rolls her eyes. George's eyes widen as he turns to Delilah.
''I'm so sorry,'' he apologizes. Delilah sends him a smile, waving away his apology.
''It is okay.'' George sends her another smile before telling them he has to go. He places another kiss on Artemis' lips before heading off.
"Where were you?" Artemis continues. "The three qualifying thingies, what then?"
"During the first qualifying, the last five get eliminated. Same as for the second one and the last one is for deciding the top and pole position," Delilah maxplains.
"Good, good," Artemis nods and reaches for her hand. "Let's go."
They search for it higher up to view the circuit. "Every circuit is divided into three sectors," Artemis continues while they finally sit down. Their feet dangling over the edge as they both lean backward.
"Yeah, I read something like that," Delilah replies, remembering what Charles and Lando had written. "So they can see per sector what they drove and you have those different colors," Delilah rambles on, only she doesn't know she is rambling. Artemis watches her ramble with an amused expression on her face. "And one is for faster and another one for slower," Delilah rambles on without noticing, "I thought yellow was slower and purple was quicker—" Delilah then notices Artemis' amused expression. Blood rushes to her cheeks as she becomes self-conscious of her own behavior. She looks down at her feet, feeling embarrassed.
Artemis' finger tilts Delilah's chin until their eyes lock. "Keep on," Artemis demands.
"A-and green was personal best," Delilah finishes. Artemis lets go of her chin and agrees. "How well."
Time passed as they talked.
''How does Monaco treat you till so far?'' Artemis questions. Delilah chuckles, looking out over the city.
''It has been great for these 24 hours,'' she replies. ''I am honestly excited for what is next.'' She glances at Artemis, who grins from ear to ear.
''Great.''
''We should leave, qualifying will begin soon,'' Artemis points out and rises to her feet. ''They shall need you at the pit wall and I'm needed at mine.'' Delilah jumps to her feet and follows Artemis down to the streets of Monaco.
Artemis leaves Delilah at the pit wall of Red Bull as she heads to the Mercedes garage.
''Hi there, Delilah,'' Gianpiero smiles. ''I'm Gianpiero Lambiase, Max's race engineer.'' Delilah sends the man a smile, excited to finally meet the man.
''It is an honor to meet you, sir,'' Delilah beams. Gianpiero chuckles as he hands her a set of headphones.
''Please, Gianpiero of GP is just fine.''
Delilah puts the headphones over her hand as she sits down next to Gianpiero. She glances to her right, only to see Hannah Schmitz. The woman caught Delilah staring and smiled.
''You must be Delilah, I'm Hannah,'' she smiles.
''The head of the strategists,'' Delilah breathes in awe.
''The one and only,'' she laughs.
''You are an icon for the sport,'' Delilah continues. ''The right female representation.'' Hannah agrees with her.
''The sport could use more women.'' She glances over her shoulder to arch her eyebrows at the team principal, Christian Horner. Christian lifts his head to look at what Hannah is inclining and silently agrees.
''I will consider,'' he only says, looking at the young woman.
Delilah turns around in her seat, watching Max sit in his car. As he drives his car into the pitlane, Delilah turns back to the pit wall. She then notices she is on TV and freezes.
''You'll be alright'' Hannah whispers. Delilah glances to her right and feels grateful for being seated next to Hannah. ''Thank you,'' she mutters.
"Delilah," Gianpiero calls, causing Delilah to lean to his side. "Yeah?" "Let me show you how the Qualifying sessions as an engineer." Delilah nods and watches closely. In the background, she heard the faint sound of the commentators.
"Qualifying in Monaco is on the way."
